In 1953, the Greenlease family was enjoying a life of luxury and success, never guessing that they were at the center of two drunken dirtbags' deadly obsession. In an attempt to pull off the largest ransom at the time, Carl Hall and Bonnie Heady haphazardly carried out a plot to kidnap six year old Bobby Greenlease. It was a plan full of lies and secrets, just like the investigation of this case. Episode 15 - May 4th Massacre (Kent State Shootings) and The Kidnap of Bobby Greenlease May 4th Massacre (Kent State Shootings) - The Vietnam War was one of the most polarizing events in U.S. history. Protests over the war began small but gained national attention in 1965. As the war raged on and the U.S. invaded a neutral Cambodia one peace rally event would turn into a violent and deadly protest. This would mark the first time that a student had been killed in an anti-war gathering in United States history. This is the story of the Kent State Massacre. The Kidnap of Bobby Greenlease - Robert Greenlease Sr. was a multi-millionaire Cadillac dealer and auto entrepreneur. He was the first individual to franchise the Cadillac Automobile West of the Mississippi River, where he expanded and marketed the Cadillac throughout the Midwest, West, North and South, long before Cadillac was a part of the General Motors Corporation. Robert, 65 years old at the time and his wife Virginia would have a son Robert "Bobby" Cosgrove Greenlease Jr. on February 3rd, 1947. This is the story of the kidnap of Bobby Greenlease. On September 28th, 1953, Bobby Greenlease, the six-year-old son of one of the Midwest’s wealthiest automobile dealers was abducted from his school and held for ransom. The news that followed would make national headlines for months, holding the attention of Americans far and wide. People cared about the fate of little Bobby as though he was their own child. This was a tale of evil, corruption, and stupidity. It Missouri’s crime of the century as The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch would put it. Mack covers the horrible murder of six year old Bobby Greenlease, whose murderers met their fate at the Missouri State Penitentiary, also covered in Episode 25. This episode contains foul language, discussions about child murder, rape, and crooked cops. We’ll do our best to stay on track, but the bottles are popped!
Eric Abramovitz plays the shit out of the clarinet. He’s amazing. But you know what’s cool about him? He wants to get better. So a few years ago, he applied to the Colburn Conservatory of Music. He set his sights on a huge scholarship and the life-changing chance to study under one of the best clarinet instructors in the world. A few months later, he was rejected. Or was he? Then Brandi wraps up her kidnapping spree… (hmm. Poor choice of words?) with the kidnapping of Bobby Greenlease. This one started in 1953, when a panicked woman ran into a prestigious Kansas City private school and told one of the nuns that her sister’d had a heart attack. She needed to take her nephew out of school. The nun obliged, but there was just one problem. The whole story was bullshit. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “She faked a rejection from her ex-boyfriend’s dream school,” CNN “A clarinetist’s girlfriend didn’t want him to leave. So she crushed his dreams,” NY Times “Abramovitz v. Lee,” CanLII.org In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Greenlease Kidnapping” FBI.gov “The Kidnapping of Bobby Greenlease” The Kansas City Star “Bonnie Emily Heady” murderpedia.org Greenleasefamily.com
Remastered SoundBeing from Missouri, I have always heard about the Bobby Greenlease case and have been curious about it. It was a heartbreaking crime and was committed with such malice, it is truly unbelievable that these two barflies could do it. I know we, as a society are all jaded by the awful things that occur in today's world but this was a huge case at a time when things like this just didn't happen. https://www.stltoday.com/news/archives/years-ago-a-tale-of-evil-and-stupidity-missouri-s/article_bfd30e6e-b28c-5f16-b1c6-c090074e615c.htmlhttps://www.kansascity.com/news/special-reports/kc-true-crime/article704587.htmlhttps://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/a-byte-out-of-history-the-bobby-greenlease-kidnapping1https://www.fbi.gov/history/famous-cases/greenlease-kidnappinghttps://www.ranker.com/list/kidnapping-murder-bobby-greenlease/amandasedlakhevenerZero at the Bone: The Playboy, the Prostitute, and the Murder of Bobby Greenlease St. Martin's Press (July 21, 2009) ISBN-10: 0312376790A Crime To Remember: Baby Come Home 2014 Season 2, Ep 8
