With America In Major New Administration & the Political News View Headlines Changing Everyday, This Book is Particularly Intriguing Now!!In 1974 John Egerton published his seminal work, The Americanization of Dixie. Pulitzer Prize-winner Cynthia Tucker and award-winning author Frye Gaillard carry Egerton's thesis forward in The Southernization of America, a compelling series of linked essays considering the role of the South in shaping America's current political and cultural landscape. They dive deeper, examining the morphing of the Southern strategy of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan into the Republican Party of today, the racial backlash against President Obama, family separation on our southern border, the rise of the Christian right, the white supremacist riots in Charlottesville, the death of George Floyd, and the attack on our nation's capitol. They find hope in the South too, a legacy rooted in the civil rights years that might ultimately lead the nation on the path to redemption. Tucker and Gaillard bring a multiracial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history, a time of racial reckoning and democracy under siege.Frye Gaillard is an award-winning journalist with over 30 published works on Southern history and culture, including Watermelon Wine; Cradle of Freedom: Alabama and the Movement that Changed America; The Books That Mattered: A Reader's Memoir; Journey to the Wilderness: War, Memory, and a Southern Family's Civil War Letters; Go South to Freedom; A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s, Our Decade of Hope, Possibility, and Innocence Lost; and The Slave Who Went to Congress. A nightmarish story unfolds...
On a day in October, a 13 year-old lost his life at the hands of his sister's brother. Questions still remain, not about who committed the crime, but rather about the situations that led to the culmination of the death of a young man. Was the killer tried for the right crime? What, if any, crimes were committed beforehand, and in my opinion, why weren't some of these questions or concerns addressed prior to that day? In this episode, Krystal Clark shares her story of her molestation at the age of seven from her cousin who was even younger. This abuse and the shame she felt triggered her Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) later in life.Krystal Clark is now doing well in her recovery. She is an Author, Blogger, Life Coach, Public Speaker, and Data Management Professional. Krystal has published several books including a Fantasy Fiction book called “Balance Of Power” which chronicles the mental toll trauma can take. Krystal also has a podcast called ‘Moving with Meaning-The Podcast' in which she talks about many topics. This is an important episode about the effects of this type of trauma, especially at such a young age. It is my opinion that this type of abuse is rampant in the U.S. and around the world. In a lot of cases these acts cause great mental anguish throughout the victim's life. I feel in most cases it goes unreported because of the shame victims feel. If we work together this world would be a much better place to live in. Since this month is Mental Health month, now is the time to fight for our and our children's contentment and happiness. This world is what we make it. Suffering is a part of life, like losing. You have to grow from it. We do not need to add to it by hiding in shame and fearing judgement from others. Society gives you permission to drink or take harmful drugs that only cover up the pain for a short time. The damage mental health issues do to our society is everywhere. What would it be like if you were happy and achieving mental health for real.Kat Kennan 's Sites: Official Web Site: https://movingwithmeaning.com/Facebook: kttps://www.facebook.com/krystal.clark.925/ h Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/movingwithmeaning82/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/krystalclark/TicTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@krystalbclark?lang=enYouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@MovingWithMeaning OTR sites:Podcast Website: https://bobadleman.wixsite.com/otrmentalhealthMail: OvertheRainbowbob@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/otrachievingmentalhealhfrInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/over_the_rainbow_achieving Twitter: https://twitter.com/overtherain1bownYouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChEYTddPDUaiZbFliit1r5Q This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podder - https://www.podderapp.com/privacy-policyChartable - https://chartable.com/privacyPodtrac -...

Certain cases stand out for the way they impact those who knew the victim along with those investigating their demise. This case is no different. When a bright light is extinguished all too soon, all that is left are questions. The hope is that those questions can be answered quickly but when they are not, those answers and justice may seem out of reach. Time and technology were the hope for the family of Sarah Yarborough but just how long would they have to wait?
“A Murder in Hollywood” - the dark story behind the bright lights of Tinseltown. Before there was Jodie Foster and Brooke Sheilds, there was Judy Turner. You may know her by her stage name, Lana Turner. Discovered at a malt shop in LA in her early teens and thrust before the cameras, she seemed to have it all―a thriving film career and the kind of fame and fortune that most people could only dream of. But she was soon physically abused by directors and studio honchos and sexually preyed upon by the matinee idols of the era, including Errol Flynn, Fernando Lamas and even Ronald Reagan. But that wasn't enough. When Lana began dating mobster Johnny Stompanato, thug for the infamous west coast mob boss Mickey Cohen, her personal life became violent and unpredictable. Eventually, the physical and emotional abuse became too much to bear, and Lana attempted to break it off with Johnny―with disastrous consequences - Stompanato ending up dead on Lana's bedroom floor, with her young daughter, Cheryl, claiming to have plunged a knife into him in an attempt to protect her mother. The subsequent murder trial made for the biggest headlines of the year, its drama eclipsing every Hollywood movie. New York Times bestselling author Casey Sherman pulls back Tinseltown's velvet curtain to reveal the dark underbelly of celebrity, rife with toxic masculinity and casual violence against women which took place in Hollywood in the 40s and 50s, long before modern day's MeToo Movement. A Murder in Hollywood transports us back to the golden age of film and illuminates one of the 20th century's most notorious true crime tales. Return guest, Casey Sherman, joins me now on Murder Most Foul.

This painful episode depicts the moments of sexual awakening. First with Kenny, my summer crush who loved me, but then taking a sharp turn to the unsettling encounter with Robert Scheinman the most popular boy in the senior class.Imagine a house party that veered off-course spiraling into chaos, an event that would leave my mother in a rage if found out. And the disappointment in realizing that for Robert it was only about sex. The intensity escalates with a chilling story that shifts to a .gripping account of a night that took an unwelcome turn, morphing from casual fun to an unwarranted assault. This narration bears the burden of exploitation and understanding consent and the scars left when ignored. This peeled-back narrative is marked by betrayal, that is as raw as it is real. By sharing these deeply personal stories, I hope to preserve a piece of history from the 1960s that emphasizes the enduring importance of finding the strength to speak out which I did not possess at the time. And in breaking this silence about sexual assault the hope is that the response is one of empathy, respect, and compassionThe complete documentary Through a BlueWindow can be seen on my youtube channel shellfein1. I would love to hear your thoughts.Thank you

For almost 50 years, the community of Marple Township, Pennsylvania was haunted by the horrific murder of a young local girl. In 1975, 8-year-old Gretchen Harrington disappeared and was later found murdered in a nearby state park. Gretchen's case went cold, and for decades, her family went without answers. However, on July 24th, 2023, retired pastor David Zandstra was arrested for her murder. Editor-in-Chief of the Baltimore Business Journal Joanna Sullivan grew up in Marple Township and was only 9 years old when Gretchen was killed. With her childhood friend, Mike Mathis, she co-authored a book about the case, titled, Marple's Gretchen Harrington Tragedy: Kidnapping, Murder and Innocence Lost in Suburban Philadelphia. She provides her reaction to this tragic case and reflects on the investigative work she conducted when writing the book. Eight-year-old Gretchen Harrington leaves home, walking to vacation bible school at a church just a half mile from her home. Usually, Gretchen is accompanied by her two sisters, but this day, she walks alone. The older girls stay home. It was just after 9 a.m. when Pastor Harold Harrington waved goodbye. Two hours passed before he found out Gretchen never made it to VBS. Hundreds of people took part in the search for the little girl. A police helicopter continuously flew overhead. Teams of searchers combed the hillside of the community. Friends and family hand out fliers with Gretchen's picture on it. Some witnesses said they had seen Gretchen outside a car, talking to someone, but nothing came of the lead. Two months later, a jogger found the skeletonized human remains of a little girl. The Harringtons confirmed the clothing found with the body as Gretchen's. It was only 20 minutes from her home. Gretchen's manner of death is ruled a homicide. The girl's skull has been fractured by multiple vicious blows. An autopsy does not reveal sex assault, but police believe that was the motive. Now, years later, a new book leads to the capture of a murderer. With 50-year-old cold murder cases there is rarely the opportunity to bring the perpetrator, even if identified, to justice. Odds are that he, or she, is long deceased. But not so in the case of 8-year-old Gretchen Harrington of Marple, PA, a quiet suburb of Philadelphia. In 1975 she was abducted on her way to Bible Camp, brutally murdered and her naked body dumped in Ridley State Park. In 2022, authors Joanna Falcone Sullivan and Mike Mathis, who grew up in Marple and were childhood contemporaries of Gretchen, decided to write a book about the crime, its effect on the family of Gretchen and, for that matter, the entire town. They interviewed both state and town authorities and were even given access to investigation files. They sat down with Gretchen's family and friends and unwittingly the murderer and his family as well. Many folks credit the authors with revitalizing the investigation after 5 decades and, in no small part helping identify the murderer and bring him to justice. Joanna Falcone Sullivan, one of the authors of Marple's Gretchen Harrington Tragedy: Kidnapping, Murder and Innocence Lost in Suburban Philadelphia, joins us today on MURDER MOST FOUL.

Pulitzer Prize & Nat'l Award Winning JournalistsWith America Heading into Another Election Season Just Months Away, This NEW Read is Particularly Intriguing!!In 1974 John Egerton published his seminal work, The Americanization of Dixie. A Hard Rain was selected as one of NPR's Best Books of 2018. Writer-in-residence at the University of South Alabama, he is also John Egerton Scholar in Residence at the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi. He is the winner of the Clarence Cason Award for Nonfiction Writing, the Lillian Smith Book Award, and the Eugene Current-Garcia Award For Distinction in Literary Scholarship. In 2019, Gaillard was awarded the Alabama Governor's Arts Award for his contributions to literature.Cynthia Tucker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist who has spent most of her career in journalism, having previously worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as an editorial page editor and as a Washington-based political columnist. In the 1970s, The Eagles made taking off into the upper stratosphere of the charts look easy. Their near decade-long reign of rock afforded them hobbies like dismantling hotel rooms with chainsaws, playing chicken with private jets, and joining delirious drug dealers on high-speed Corvette rides. But after nearly a solid decade of stadium sell-outs, No. 1 singles, top-selling albums and enough cocaine, sex and tension to make even the hardest, wildest, '70s rock ‘n' rollers cry uncle, the Eagles had burned out. They were at the top of their game in a decade that they owned, yet somehow, the greatness they sought had destroyed them.To hear all episodes of Disgraceland for free, visit amazon.com/disgraceland.
