Today after the third win in a row for @umichfootball over @ohiostatefb 30-24 I had on the #podcast @nikkischwartz_ and my friend Milton a season ticket at #thebighouse since 1985. 37-3 last 3 years under #jimharbaugh the #wolverines play @hawkeyefootball in the @bigten #championshipgame next weekend and then the #cfp after that. We don't want a repeat of the @tcufootball game this year. Agree with Milton #marvinharrisonjr is the real deal though I feel he could have helped out his #quarterback #kylemccord on that first INT. Wouldn't be surprised if the #buckeyes move on from Coach Day. Let him go to @aggiefootball they have deep pockets. Talked #signstealing too which everyone is doing. To think #michigan went 12-0 and had their coach suspended for six games is quite impressive. Think that #harbaugh should stay in #annarbor and he would be a legend. Same goes for @umichbball head coach #juwanhoward one of the #fabfive he's had a rough start but give him time and the results will come. Milton is also a season ticket for @umichhockey and we plan on getting to a #basketball & #hockey game this winter. Milton will be back on once we get the #collegefootballplayoffs matchups. Can't wait. All sports. One podcast. (even hockey) PODCAST LINK ON ITUNES: http://bit.ly/JDTSPODCAST
In the latest episode of the "Big House Bleachers" podcast, hosts Michael Smeltzer and Matt Hartwell discuss a range of topics related to Michigan football and basketball. They kick off with a recap of Michigan's significant 24-15 victory over Penn State, a win that kept them undefeated at 10-0 for the season, including their conference games. This victory keeps Michigan's hopes for a Big Ten championship and a college football playoff berth alive. A notable element of the game was Blake Corum's performance against Penn State's top-ranked rushing defense, where Michigan impressively finished with 32 consecutive running plays. However, overshadowing this on-field success was the suspension of Michigan's head football coach, Jim Harbaugh, amidst a controversial situation involving sign-stealing allegations and tensions between the Big Ten conference and the Michigan football program. Mike and Matt delve into the complexities of both the on-field triumphs and the off-field drama, offering detailed insights and awarding their Player of the Game honors. They also preview Michigan's upcoming game against Maryland Terrapins. Switching to basketball, the hosts discuss the Michigan basketball team's promising start to the season, moving to a 2-0 record even as head coach Juwan Howard recovers from heart surgery. They note the team's improved chemistry over last year's squad and look forward to their upcoming game against St. John's. The Fab Five is arguably one of the greatest and most influential recruiting classes in college basketball history. Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Johnson led Michigan to consecutive NCAA Championship games in 1992 and 1993, with the 1993 title game against UNC being most remembered for Webber's infamous "timeout". Esteemed actor, comedian, and co-head writer of Saturday Night Live, Bryan Tucker joins the pod to determine if the 1993 NCAA Championship Game is worthy of the First Ballot Hall of Fame, his favorite athletes to host SNL, his UNC Mount Rushmore, and his favorite "Big White Lunk". The Latest on Signgate Starts at 1:00 The developments that have developed are basically nothing. Feels like we know pretty much what there is to know, it's just a matter of what happens next from the NCAA. Michigan could be the first program hit with the NCAA's new rule of "if a staffer gets in trouble, the head coach also gets in trouble". There's some failure on the part of Warde Manuel. What is the actual competitive advantage of stolen signals? College football coaches are the most paranoid people in America. Based on how the NCAA has handled these issues, it seems extremely unlikely that anything will happen to Michigan this season. Worst case scenario would be Jim Harbaugh gets a show-cause a year or two down the road. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Michigan Men's Basketball Backcourt Starts at 22:37 Dug McDaniel is the most established guard. Freshmen point guards can be shaky, McDaniel's trajectory for his sophomore year is encouraging. Jaelin Llewellyn is your next most established guard. We didn't see a lot of him last year since he tore his ACL but he should be full go by now. Hard to know how much we're getting back from him after his injury. Nimari Burnett transfers as a rotation player from an Alabama team that was the 3rd best defense in college basketball last year. His offensive upside is unknown, Charles Matthews is a good comparison. George Washington III was described by Dug McDaniels as a good shooter but probably won't see more than 10 minutes per game. Jace Howard is listed as a guard but it's unlikely that he'll be a lot more than he was last year. 3. Michigan Men's Basketball Frontcourt Starts at 45:38 Takes hotter than Edward Norton Jr. after seeing Connor Stalions on the sidelines at CMU and he's like "I GOT THIS ROLE. THIS IS ALL ME, BABY". Tarris Reed is your starter, who is also Not Hunter Dickinson. He was slightly better defensively than Hunter Dickinson but the offensive drop-off was much bigger. Also needs to be better than 40% at free throws! Olivier Nkamhoua was a big contributor for the #1 defense in the country last year. That is already a huge upgrade defensively at the 4. He won't solve all your problems but is a very good, veteran basketball player. Seth thinks the final starting spot is Terrance Williams II, Brian thinks it's Tray Jackson. Will Tschetter: exists. Youssef Khayat could be a guy. 4. 2023-2024 Men's Basketball Overview Starts at 1:21:19 Making the tournament is a reasonable goal for this team. Where is Michigan going to get their points from? This gets made up by the massive defensive improvements. Michigan loses Jett Howard to the NBA but Michigan was a better team without Jett Howard. Juwan Howard is still recovering from heart surgery and has not been available in the pre-season coaching. There are going to be some hiccups with this team but all the transfers coming in are very experienced players from good teams. The vibes were awful last year but should be much better this year. The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
September 21, 2023: Although basketball is a distant second in terms of importance to Michigan fans, there is still a good tradition of winning. However, Juwan Howard and the Wolverines seem to be slowly spiraling the drain. They enter the 2023-24 season after what can only be described as a disappointing season where they not only missed the NCAA tournament but lost in the NIT first round in a heart crushing fashion to Vanderbilt. The program feels like it is lost with strange roster construction and an inability to recruit to the level hoped for when Howard was hired. The Wolverines have struggled to recruit a point guard they trust going to the portal year after year. Worse yet, the team that never could get over the hump last year will enter this season without two first round NBA draft picks (Jett Howard and Coby Bufkin) and the consensus number one transfer portal player, Hunter Dickinson. It's hard to envision that this team is going anywhere in the near future except on a slow circling of the drain. Perhaps they squeeze into the NCAA this year but going forward the future doesn't look rosy. Are you looking for Spartan gear? There's only one place to go to get your MSU T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts — Nudge Printing. (https://www.nudgeprinting.com) Nudge is owned and operated by Gabe and Brittany, two MSU alums. Every college basketball offseason is marked by winners and losers as players transfer, enter the NBA Draft, or exhaust their eligibility. This season is no different and is headlined by Hunter Dickinson's decision to leave Michigan and head to Kansas. That decision makes Bill Self's Jayhawks team an offseason winner, but also makes Juwan Howard's Wolverines an offseason loser (so far). The early entry losses of Jett Howard and Kobe Bufkin also hurt Michigan's case. Most recently, the Wolverines have missed out because of their inability to get Caleb Love enrolled in school. Other teams joining Michigan in Andy & Isaac's “losers so far” conversation are Baylor, Arizona St, and UCLA. Who else will join them and will any of them be able to change their place before the new season starts later this fall? Also…we've got a six-pack of player movement news including transfer declarations and players pulling out of the NBA Draft. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…
Many Michigan fans rejoiced when former 5-star and UNC Tournament hero Caleb Love announced he would be transferring to Michigan to play for Juwan Howard. But it was a bit premature as the details were not finalized and Caleb Love decomitted from Michigan today while rumors swirled there was trouble with getting him through admissions. Luke Ghiardi and Scotty White break it down. All your favorite Maize n Brew podcasts are now a part of “The Block M Podcast Network,” an affiliate of the Fan First Sports Network! Juwan Howard and staff are coming off an extremely disappointing season. We all know that! Now he is tasked with rebuilding his roster and making all the new parts work. It's a big job and a pivotal off season for Michigan basketball. With me to discuss that and more is the radio play by play voice of our Wolverines Brian Boesch

Michigan Spring Game - Offense starts at 1:00 The spring game happened and most of the starters sat for most of it. JJ had one bad interception but otherwise looked like JJ. Tuttle looked pretty good, him and Davis Warren look at least ok. Apparently Alex Orji has a downfield passing game?? Seth's takeaway of the backup QBs was - let's not get JJ hurt. Ben Hall shined at running back and looked like he might get some legitimate carries this season, and especially in future seasons. Semaj Morgan might be a good end-around weapon. Frederick Moore was a steal. Former walk-on Peyton O'Leay looked like a guy and he made some plays, he out-muscled Amorion Walker on the two-point conversion. Loveland is the guy at tight end but he only played for a quarter (Jake Butt thinks they're alike). None of the transfer offensive linemen are on campus yet so Greg Crippen and Raheem Anderson played center - they both looked good. The guards are young but it's fine because Keegan and Zinter have those spots locked down. Tackle was a little bit concerning, they were letting guys through all day. Sherrone Moore seemed to have a really decent feel for play calling - an improvement over last year's spring game. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Michigan Spring Game - Defense and Special Teams starts at 45:35 Everyone's number one player that they want to talk about is someone different. Kenneth Grant is one of them, he looked fantastic. Rayshaun Benny ran down a guy from behind. We are reminded that Jake Ryan wasn't thought of extremely highly for a while until he got a scholarship and shined in a spring game. Josiah Stewart looked alright, Derrick Moore looked like not-a-freshman. TJ Guy didn't play, he was injured and on a scooter during the day. We saw a lot of Ernest Hausmann, he was quick. He made a mistake by not dropping back when he was supposed to on a play but that's something that will get fixed. Something you might try this year is move Sainristil to corner and run some 4-3 against less passy teams. Michigan hasn't had a ball hawk safety in a while, maybe Zeke Berry can be that kind of guy, there's some potential there. We saw a lot of Keon Sabb, both good and bad, he's still a work in progress (probably a year away). Amorion Walker is a great athlete that can do everything, just need to teach him what to do. He's not there yet but by the Penn State game he should be matured. Who would you start as the 2nd cornerback right now? McBurrows? Tommy Doman looks pretty good at kicker and punter. 3. Hot Takes and Basketball Bits starts at 1:28:12 Takes hotter than Seth's face trying to be Brian. How much would you have to pay Caitlin Clark to come to Michigan? There's a lot more parody in basketball this year, why is that? This Purdue team probably isn't a #1 seed in most other seasons. A lot of blue blood type teams are missing key pieces. Enter Nimari Burnett, exit Kobe Bufkin and Hunter Dickinson (this was recorded before the Bufkin news). In theory Michigan could match whatever offer anyone else is offering Hunter Dickinson but based on Juwan Howard's statement and player comments on social media, it feels like there's some closure there... How much do we get out of Papa Kante next season? How does Michigan get top guys out of the portal? 4. Michigan Hockey starts at 2:05:35 Ok now for some good news. The interim tag officially comes off Brandon Naurato, the timing of this is interesting but here we are. Why did it take so long? We're curious to see how this changes the culture in the long term. The State of the Basketball Program (1) starts at 1:00 This segment is usually about the latest basketball game but then Michigan scored one basket against Rutgers in 19 minutes so nope. Some people are calling to fire Juwan Howard and those people should probably tap the brakes. Everyone is disappointed but let's talk about it, there was 10 times less hydrogen at the 4 spot this year. It's tough to build a roster these days and one good player at the 4 probably would have put this team into the tournament, admissions really brought this team down. This team did improve defensively throughout the season, even Jett Howard (but That Rutgers Play did still happen). What does the roster even look like next year? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. The State of the Basketball Program (2) starts at 35:14 Further roster discussion, this team really needs Kobe Bufkin back next year. What about Jace Howard? This team was extremely unlucky, does that revert to the mean next year? The last two minutes of a game aren't that different from the rest of the game. Is this team just young and nervous at the end of games? 3. Hockey vs Ohio State starts at 58:05 Brian predicted Michigan would get cranked by Ohio State, they did not get cranked! David argues that, despite going 1-3 against Ohio State the rest of the season, played them really well in three of those four games. This team has the ability to go and dominate some very good teams but then also play some terrible hockey. Credit to Wisconsin last week for playing hard for their season against Michigan. Michigan didn't take a major!! 4. Hockey vs Ohio State and the NCAA Tournament starts at 1:12:20 Ohio State was getting run out of Yost in just the first 11 minutes, they challenged a goal just to take a long timeout. The Minnesota vs Michigan State game, uhh... looked like a Minnesota vs Michigan State game. Michigan looks to be locked into a 1 seed. Let's talk potential matchups. MUSIC: "Still Alive (From Portal)"—The 8-Bit Big Band "Hockey Monkey"—The Zambonis, James Kochalka "The Pot & Kettle"—The Rumjacks “Across 110th Street”
