This is the case of the kidnapping and murder of 12 year old Marion Parker.
In 1927, Los Angeles was gripped by terror as a young girl was kidnapped and then brutally murdered. The killer's motive was a twisted mystery, and his escape sparked a massive manhunt that captivated the nation. When a well-dressed man approached a Los Angeles junior high school in 1927 asking for his coworker Perry Parker's daughter, the woman at the front desk should have immediately sensed something was off. Parker didn't have one daughter at the school; he had two. When the man clarified he wanted the "younger" Parker girl, that should have struck the office marm as odder still because the girls were twins. Still, Mary Holt summoned 12-year-old Marion Parker to leave school grounds -- a deadly decision that would soon haunt her and the rest of the nation. A massive interstate search was launched to find Marion's killer and within a few days, police arrested nineteen-year-old William Edward Hickman, a former co-worker of Perry Parker. During his interrogation, Hickman confessed to kidnapping and murdering Marion, claiming that a god he referred to as “Providence” had instructed him to do it. That confession prompted Hickman's attorneys to take advantage of the state's new law accepting a legal defense of not guilty by reason of insanity; however, a jury disagreed, and Hickman was found guilty and executed at San Quentin Prison the following year.Because of the shocking cruelty and brutality of the murder, the well documented and exciting search for the killer, and the sensational nature of the defense, the story of Marion Parker's murder and the trial that followed dominated the media and occupied several pages of all the major papers across the state for months. For these reasons and more, it remains one of the most notorious murders in California history.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1928. "Hickman to have new judge." Fresno Bee, January 25: 1.—. 1927. On the afternoon of December 15, 1927, twelve-year-old Marion Parker was checked out of her Los Angeles junior high school by a man claiming to be an employee of her father, Perry Parker, an employee at a bank in the city. The man claimed Parker had been in an accident and he was to bring the girl to see her father, but this was just a ruse to abduct the girl. The following day, Marion's parents received several cryptic ransom letters demanding $1,500 in gold in exchange for the safe return of their daughter. On December 17, Perry Parker delivered the money to the kidnapper, who took the money, then dumped Marion's dead, mutilated body out of the car before speeding away.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1928. It's said Marion's ghost still lingers. When the old Parker house was bought in 1988, the new owners swore they heard footsteps at night and found items out of place. They believed they shared the space with a benevolent, childlike, non-threatening spirit. A fitting description of Marion Parker, the girl who never made it home for Christmas. In this episode we have a special double feature for you guys. We had two shorter subjects so we decided to put them both into one episode. In the first one, we have the abduction of one month old Peter Weinberger when he disappeared after his mother left him alone for 10 minutes on the front porch in his carriage on July 4th, 1956. In the second, and most disturbing one, 12 year old Marion Parker was taken by a man from her school on December 15th, 1927 and murdered and dismembered two days later. Both incidents involved ransom demands from the kidnappers. This case occurred in 1937 Los Angeles and was one of the most haunting & horrific crimes to occur since the murder of little Marion Parker a decade earlier. The Babes of Inglewood were three little girls who went missing in broad daylight while playing at the community park. However, this case is very likely also about one of the the earliest wrongful convictions of a high-profile crime. Go to BABBEL.com/LANOTSO for up to 55% off your subscription. Kidnapping for ransom is still prevalent across the world, however, in today's United States it is essentially obsolete. Today's episode covers three historic US kidnappings that helped to fuel the American parent's fear for the wellbeing of their child. While the cases are unique in their own way, each child's parents agonized over whether or not they would see their child again, and not all of them did. This week's case is more like three cases in one, fiends. In 1928, Los Angeles county experienced a chilling string of disappearances. On March 10th,10 year old Walter Collins had gone to the movies with his friends and never came home. Then on May 16th the Winslow brothers aged then and twelve attended a meeting of their model boat club, they too never came home. Arriving on the heels of the grisly murder of Marion Parker, a ten year old local girl, these events sent the people of Los Angeles into a panic, but the disappearances would pale in comparison to what actually became of those poor boys. What was once thought to be high profile kidnappings turned out to be a back woods nightmare at the hands of a man named Gordon Stewart Northcross. If that isn't enough for you, the strange story of Walter Collins takes us on a wild ride into identity theft and a some of the most corrupt police work we've seen so far. Don't believe us? The story is SO wild it served as the basis for the 2008 Clint Eastwood movie: The Changeling. Hang on to your hats this week fiends, it's going to be an old timey bumpy ride! All William Edward Hickman needed to pick up 12 year old Marion Parker early from Mount Vernon Junior High School one day in December of 1927 was a pleasant personality and a friendly smile. Hickman was not the girl’s father, he was not a relative, he was not a friend of the family...he was a stranger, but he came armed with a fictitious name, Mr. Cooper, and a persuasive story - he told the office secretary, a woman named Naomi Britten, that he was there to pick Marion up because her father had just been in a horrific car accident. He’d been rushed to the hospital and they weren’t sure yet if he was going to pull through. Ms. Britten stood up and walked over to speak to this man. She noted that he was very nicely dressed, he was very polite and well-spoken, though she was pretty worried and concerned for Marion’s dad and whether or not he was going to pull through...she was very preoccupied with that terrible news. She tried to locate the school’s principal, Cora Freeman, but Ms. Britten was kind of frazzled and had a hard time locating any of the school administrators who would be the ones to decide whether or not Marion Parker was to be released from school to this man. Eventually, Ms. Britten found a teacher named Mary Holt, so Ms. Holt came to the office to discuss this matter with this man who called himself Mr. Cooper. He explained to Ms. Holt and Ms. Britten that he was a colleague of Marion’s father over at First National Bank and he offered up the bank’s phone number if they wanted to verify the purpose of his visit to the school and his instructions to pick Marion up. The man was so easy going and relaxed that they two women really didn’t give it a second thought and had Marion brought into the office from class. The man brought himself down to Marion’s level and explained who he was and why he was there. He reassured her that everything was going to be okay and he would take her to see her dad right away. The man walked out of the office and off school grounds with Marion in tow. What could possibly be worse than finding out your young daughter has been kidnapped and held for ransom? Listen to this episode and immediately regret asking. The tale of 12 year-old Marion Parker is both heartbreaking and horrifyingly sick. Find out why it sometimes pays to be the overlooked twin, and why you should always always always call someone's bluff. Pour something strong, and take comfort in the fact that the culprit in this tale met a fitting end, and that the ghost of a little girl that haunts a home in LA seems happy and at peace.
Braydon and Belinda discuss one rather gruesome haunting, and another that is utterly absurd.Belinda starts the show off by talking about the ghost of Marion Parker, who was murdered horribly by student, William Hickman. Belinda goes on to detail many of the notes about the case, and then discusses the paranormal aspect of the haunting now. The murder was so terrible that the spirit of the young Marion Parker is said to be spotted and experienced at her childhood home.Braydon goes on to discuss an odd entity by the name of the Gurning Man, who terrorised a small district of Glasgow in the late 70's. The entity recently made a comeback, 40 years after the original events occurred. This entity was recognised by its incredibly odd appearance, and its signature gurning face, which it used to spook the women it terrorised. If you wanted to follow us on social media, we can be found on: Facebook, and on Instagram You, Me, and a Poltergeist, Braydon, BelindaCHECK OUT ALL THE OTHER PODCAST ON TNC: THATSNOTCANON.COM

In 1927, just weeks before Christmas, the abduction and brutal murder of Marion Parker made headlines across the country.
On December 17, 1927, twelve year old Marion Parker was inadvertently handed over to a kidnapper by naive school employees. What started out as a kidnapping for ransom turned into what the Los Angeles Times deemed "The Case of the Century." The kidnapper eventually returned Marion to her parents...in pieces. Brandi starts us off with a story that’ll have you giving the side-eye to good looking white guys everywhere. This horrible crime began when a well-dressed, charming man walked into a Los Angeles high school and politely informed the school’s registrar that he needed to speak with a wealthy banker’s daughter. It only took a little persuasion for him to walk out of the school with 12-year-old Marion Parker. Soon, Parker’s family received ransom notes from a man who identified himself as “the fox.” He promised to return the girl alive — as long as the Parkers did as they were told. Then Kristin tells us about the longest and most expensive criminal trial in American history. It all started when a mother suspected that her toddler had been molested at daycare. Police immediately took action. They sent letters to the hundreds of parents whose children attended the daycare. Police indicated that the children at McMartin Preschool could have witnessed or been victims of a number of traumatic experiences, including child pornography, sodomy, and oral sex. The parents were horrified. A social worker interviewed 400 of the children. In the end, she found that nearly all of them had been abused. But did she really uncover abuse? Or were her interview methods lkjflawed? Had anything actually happened at McMartin Preschool? And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: McMartin Preschool case, famous-trials.com “The Longest Trial – A Post-Mortem,” New York Times “McMartin Preschool: Anatomy of a Panic,” New York Times (video) In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Aggie and The Fox” by Joan Renner, DerrangedLACrimes.com “Girl’s Grisly Killing Had City Residents Up in Arms” by Cecilia Rasmussen, Los Angeles Times “The Murder of Marion Parker” by Mark Gribben, murderpedia.org “Edgar Rice Burroughs Reports on the Notorious 1928 Hickman Trial” erbzine.com

For readers of true crime sagas like Tinseltown and Little Demon in the City of Light comes a chilling account of a murder that captivated the United States in the 1920s.Twelve-year-old Marion Parker was kidnapped from her Los Angeles school by an unknown assailant on December 15, 1927. Her body appeared days later, delivered to her father by the killer, who fled with the ransom money. When William Hickman was hunted down and charged with the killing, he admitted to all of it, in terrifying detail, but that was only the start….Hickman’s insanity plea was the first of its kind in the history of California, and the nature of the crime led to a media frenzy unlike any the country had seen. His lawyers argued that their client lived in a fantasy world, inspired by movies and unable to tell right from wrong. The movie industry scrambled to protect its exploding popularity (and profits) from ruinous publicity. Outside the courtroom, the country craved every awful detail, and the media happily fed that hunger. As scandals threatened the proceedings from the start, the death of a young girl grew into a referendum on the state of America at the birth of mass media culture.David Wilson, a private investigator for over thirty years, captures the maelstrom of Marion Parker's death in vivid detail. From the crime itself to the manhunt that followed, from the unprecedented trial to its aftermath, Wilson draws readers in to the birth of the celebrity criminal. NOT JUST EVIL: David Wilson
