The bottom line here is that Trump and his co-conspirators — a group that clearly extends far beyond the six named in Jack Smith's indictment — were not only willing but planning to recreate Reagan's and Nixon's Kent State slaughter, should anybody protest their takeover of the nation. Just past noon on Monday May 4, 1970, a squadron of Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire at a loose collection of students gathered across an expanse of leafy lawns and campus parking lots at Kent State University in northeastern Ohio. On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on unarmed protestors at Kent State University in Ohio. Four students were killed and nine others were wounded. This episode examines that music that mattered to the students and the music that was made as a result of this tragedy. "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young stands alone as not only the most famous song to be associated with the massacre, but also as one of the greatest protest songs of all time. However, former Kent State students Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders and Joe Walsh, who were on campus on May 4, 1970, were forever impacted by the shootings. It's really hard to grasp what America was like in late 1973 if you didn't live through those times. For one thing, the country was in the process of falling apart. The unprecedented scandal of Watergate was starting to reach a boiling point, the executive branch of the US government was coming unhinged from the top down and nobody knew what was going to happen next.           Somehow, it all seemed like an extension of the earlier national nightmare that had begun with the escalation of the war in Vietnam, which became deeply unpopular.  Tens of thousands of US soldiers were dying for no apparent reason, as the enemy posed no discernable threat to America. Massive protests were taking place constantly and finally, things began to change. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came out firmly against the war and a few months later, Senator Robert Kennedy announced his opposition to it he launched his candidacy for president.             Then, on April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated. And just sixty-four days later, Senator Kennedy met the same brutal fate. They were both extremely popular iconic figures in American culture, deeply compassionate, powerful leaders who represented the hope for a brighter, more enlightened future for the country. And they were young as well, which was deeply meaningful to the 76 million Baby Boomers in the population. Although they had accomplished so much in their lifetimes, King was only 39 and Kennedy was only 42. Then, with a couple of tragic flashes of gunfire, to our extreme shock and dismay, both Martin and Bobby were suddenly gone, and the two strongest voices for peace and sanity in the country had been silenced.   Predictably, the war kept escalating and the student protests continued to increase. Then the Kent State Massacre happened, when four unarmed college kids were gunned down in cold blood by the Ohio National Guard. The country went into complete chaos and things went rapidly downhill from there. Fear and confusion became the new American way of life. Eventually things seemed to normalize out for a while, but then the treachery and darkness of Watergate, with its resulting severe constitutional crisis took it all to a whole new level. Again, if you didn't live through these events, you can't imagine how disconcerting and deeply traumatic it was, as it all played out in real time.             But there was also something else happening during those days that is just as hard to grasp from today's perspective. Almost as if it was the opposite end of the spectrum, an enormous interest in personal growth was rapidly spreading throughout the country as well. It had been prompted by the Beatles' trip to India to study meditation, which also happened in 1968 and it continued growing exponentially from there.   By early 1974, the search for inner peace and consciousness evolution seemed to be everywhere. And given the metaphysical events that had happened to me around the sudden death of my father, which shook my world to its very core, it made sense that I found myself travelling down this newfound road towards self-discovery. In those days, I was entering into my second year of living in a meditation ashram, which was a modern American version of basic monastic living. We practiced meditation two to three hours a day and attended lectures on a nightly basis. We had about thirty people under the age of thirty, living together communally, and the rules of the house were no meat, no fish, no eggs, no sex, no dope, no booze. You can imagine what that was like.             We also had information meetings that were open to the public, which regularly drew hundreds of people who were interested in inner growth. As a result of these meetings, there was a constant influx of new practitioners.           I was one of three leaders who helped guide things along. I was about to turn twenty-five years old and had been practicing meditation for almost two years, so I was considered to be one of the senior members of the community, which should tell you a lot about a lot of things. Anyway, something a little quirky happened to me around then that unexpectedly left quite a deep impression on me. I was serving as a counselor to new meditators, helping them get acclimated to the practice. I had about ten people that I was meeting with individually on a regular basis. One of them was a young college professor who seemed to be in his late twenties. His name was Leo and he was extremely intelligent in a rather witty, but somewhat shy kind of way. There was also a young lady who claimed she was over twenty-one, but everybody thought that was a bit of a stretch. Her name was Peggy and she worked in a nearby doughnut shop. She later confided in me that she had never done well in school and felt lucky that she even graduated high school.           One day, during my meeting with the college professor, I couldn't help but notice that he seemed completely blissed out of his mind. I knew that the meditation we were practicing had the power to elevate your awareness and help you feel inner peace but out of nowhere, this guy was completely off the charts. Finally, he told me that he had fallen deeply in love and was basically over the moon from it. Now I had been around the block a few times myself and was now living the life of a monastic, so I had my reservations about it, but I kept them to myself. Whatever he was into certainly seemed to be making him incredibly happy, so who was I to say anything about it?             A couple of days later, I had my meeting with Peggy from the doughnut shop, and it was immediately obvious that something wonderful was happening to her as well. After a little while, she blurted out that she had fallen in love and had never been so happy, which certainly explained the bright smile that lit up her face and the light that kept pouring out of her eyes. She was a nice kid and I felt good for her.           For some reason, I just didn't put two and two together, but a few days later, to my complete surprise, I found out that Peggy and Leo were going together. The college professor and the girl from the doughnut shop had fallen in love. Apparently, they had met at a meditation meeting and sparks started flying immediately.  After a couple of quick coffees, the magnetic attraction had taken hold and now they were in the midst of the great love affair of their lives.           And naturally, they both started confiding in me. Leo said, “She tells me that I'm sexier than any of the younger guys in her crowd. And she says that making love with me is the best sex she's ever had in her life. She can't believe how great it is,” he stopped for a moment, then sounding like he was describing a magnificent dreamscape, he added, “I never knew life could be like this.”           A couple of days later, I sat down with Peggy. “He tells me that not only am I the most beautiful girl he's ever seen, I'm actually smarter than any of the students he teaches,” she gushed. She literally looked like she was about to bust a gut from glee. “He gives me books to read, we discuss them and he loves my comments. Can you imagine that? I'm sitting there talking to a real college professor who thinks I'm smart. I can't believe it. And my God, what great sex we're having. I have to tell you; I feel like the heavens have opened up for me.”           Well, I was impressed to say the least. I hadn't seen two people this happy in years. Sure, the age difference was pretty big, not to mention the gap in their intellectual backgrounds. But hey, crazier things have happened and who knows, maybe love does conquer all.           Well, it went on like that for about a month and then I'll bet you can guess what came along next. One day Peggy came in to see me. She looked like she was in the middle of a deep sense of disappointment mixed with a much deeper sense of relief.           “I finally had to get away from Leo,” she told me. “I couldn't take it anymore. The guy's just a stick in the mud. He never wanted to do anything but stay home, and when I could get him to go out, he was a total drag.” She stopped and took a breath.  “All of my friends thought he was a real creep, too. He was obviously way too old for me. I mean, after a while, I felt like I was going out with a friend of my dad's. What the hell was I thinking? Thank God it's over.”           We both had an “isn't life strange?” kind of laugh about it and I prepared myself for my next meeting with Leo, which took place a few days later. I was hoping that she hadn't broken his heart, but as soon as I saw him, it was obvious that he was every bit as happy to be done with Peggy as she was to be done with him. Probably more so.           “You know what,” he said. “At first, I thought it was just the circumstances that she had grown up under, but after a little while, I had to accept the fact that she just didn't have it upstairs. And let me tell you something, that's really a nice way of putting it. Believe me, I'm being kind.” He looked like someone who had just made a narrow escape from a torture chamber. “You know what?” he continued. “There's a reason people end up working in a donut shop. The girl has the IQ of a salamander.”            I certainly felt relieved for him that he hadn't had his heart broken, and I was happy that they were both walking away from it unscathed. Of course, it wasn't totally unexpected because it had been so incongruous from the very beginning. But still, it gave me a lot to chew on. For one thing, they had both seemed so extraordinarily happy that I could have sworn it was based on something real.           But after I gave it a little more thought, it was obvious that it had just been an extremely powerful infatuation.  They fallen into the romance trance, where you temporarily lose sight of your new partner's shortcomings. You're on such a high from what's going on that just don't notice anything negative. But sooner or later, you open your eyes and come back to reality.           The explanation made perfect sense, but I felt intuitively that there was more to it than just that. The ecstatic joy they were experiencing was just too powerful to be limited to that bubble of infatuation, and then it became clear. They each had a deep-seated psychological issue and they were providing each other with some much-longed for and much needed relief.           Leo was in his late twenties, and suddenly this pretty, young woman who was twenty-one if you were willing to stretch the truth, was attracted to him. It soothed his fears that he was getting old and gave him proof that even though he was about to break the scary age barrier of turning thirty, he still had the goods. In short, it brought back his confidence and made him feel young.           And Peggy was also an open book. She had been told she was stupid her whole life and besides being the object of a lot of sexual attraction, nobody ever took her seriously on any other level. Now she was suddenly on par with an actual college professor. They were reading books together and having deep talks. And he was telling her that she was much smarter than the students in any of his classes.  And suddenly, a bright light went on in her head and she thought, “Hey, you know what? Maybe I'm not so dumb after all.”   It was a deep point for me to contemplate. The relief of having your psychological problems resolved, although it may be a deeply pleasurable experience, is not the same thing as experiencing true happiness. Getting relief from being unhappy is not the same thing as actually being happy. It may seem subtle, but saints and sages throughout the ages have told us that they're very different. To make real progress, your awareness has to grow and you have to elevate your consciousness, because if you don't evolve into a more enlightened being, although you're going to be greatly relieved when your big problem is resolved, you're just going to create another one that's going to put you right back into the same trap. So that's a look back at a couple of interesting things that I found myself involved with just about fifty years ago. And one thing I can tell you from my perspective, although the times change, the scenes change and the characters come and go, the lessons remain the same. And I'm still trying to learn them. My deepest hope at this point in time, after all this study and all this practice, is that I just may be starting to scratch the surface. But on an infinite path that's loaded with happiness, peace, love, joy and fulfillment - what difference does any of that make?  Well, this seems like a good place to end this episode. To many, it is known as “The Day the 60s Died.”  On May 4, 1970, 4 Kent State University students were shot dead by the Ohio National Guard during a protest against the expanding War in Vietnam.  Mick tells the story of a defining cultural moment and what, if anything, we've learned from these events.

Radicals put their asses on the line. -Nancy Newman In this episode, we meet a woman who entered Ohio State in 1967 with a goal of becoming a sorority sister and within one year, became a radical, fiercely protesting the Vietnam War and supporting the Black Panthers. Nancy Newman was a senior, majoring in journalism when college campuses erupted on May 4, 1970 following the Kent State Massacre which left 4 students dead and many injured. Soon after, she was hit in the head with a brick during a demonstration that got out of control. A picture of her being carried out of the angry crowd was all over the news, including the famous CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. In this interview, Nancy tells us what happened next and in her candid story, we hear the words of a woman who felt things so deeply, she put her life and her freedom on the line. Her life's path led her toward a 40 year career in social work, where she specialized in family therapy and then taught at the college level in Canada. Now retired and living in California, Nancy has a Masters Degree in Fine Arts and is writing her memoir. Protests over the war began small but gained national attention in 1965. As the war raged on and the U.S. invaded a neutral Cambodia one peace rally event would turn into a violent and deadly protest. This would mark the first time that a student had been killed in an anti-war gathering in United States history. This is the story of the Kent State Massacre. The Kidnap of Bobby Greenlease - Robert Greenlease Sr. was a multi-millionaire Cadillac dealer and auto entrepreneur. He was the first individual to franchise the Cadillac Automobile West of the Mississippi River, where he expanded and marketed the Cadillac throughout the Midwest, West, North and South, long before Cadillac was a part of the General Motors Corporation. Robert, 65 years old at the time and his wife Virginia would have a son Robert "Bobby" Cosgrove Greenlease Jr. on February 3rd, 1947. This is the story of the kidnap of Bobby Greenlease. Dean was shot at the Kent State Massacre in 1970 and subsequently paralyzed. While that definitely changed the course of his life, it didn't slow him down. Over the past 50 years since the shooting, Dean has competed in marathons, played wheel chair basketball and was a County Commissioner. He doesn't hold a grudge, is thankful to be alive, and makes the most of each day he's given!

In 1970 the anti-war movement had plenty to rally against. Thousands of American troops were being killed and wounded in Vietnam and America's youth were often the ones paying the price. U.S. involvement in Vietnam had dominated foreign policy through most of the 1960s and when President Nixon announced an expansion of the theater of war to include Cambodia, many students at Kent State University were outraged. Campus protests were met with Ohio National Guard troops and on May 4th the clashes turned deadly. Four students were killed that day and nine others wounded. May 4th 2021 is the 51st anniversary of the Kent State Massacre which occurred in 1970. In this interview, Joe Lewis, Scappoose resident and serving member on the board of directors of the Rural Organizing Project, recounts his experience being at the very center of the protests at Kent State. He set the scene for the events of that day in history and explained how it has affected the people involved.

In the tradition of women as the unsung keepers of history, Deborah Paredez’s second poetry collection tells her story as a Latina daughter of the Vietnam War. The title refers to the year 1970—the Year of the Metal Dog in the lunar calendar—which was the year of the author’s birth, the year her father prepared to deploy to Vietnam along with many other Mexican-American immigrant soldiers, and a year of tremendous upheaval across the United States. Images from iconic photographs and her father’s snapshots are incorporated, fragmented, scrutinized, and reconstructed throughout the collection as Paredez recalls untold stories from a war that changed her family and the nation. In poems and lamentations that evoke Hecuba, the mythic figure so consumed by grief over the atrocities of war that she was transformed into a howling dog, and La Llorona, the weeping woman in Mexican folklore who haunts the riverbanks in mourning and threatens to disturb the complicity of those living in the present, Paredez recontextualizes the Vietnam era, from the arrest of Angela Davis to the haunting image of Mary Ann Vecchio at the Kent State Massacre, never forgetting the outcry and outrage that women’s voices have carried across time.

In the wake of the attacks in Nova Scotia, the Canadian government has introduced new legislation that will ban over a thousand different assault weapons, and initiate a gun buy back program. Gun control is always a third rail in politics, even in Canada, and a lot of Conservative politicians, including Doug Ford and Peter MacKay, are making hay about it. Will politics get in the way of gun safety again, and will this be the path to stop another massacre? The Perplex Files. In the midst of all the protests to re-open the economy, both here and in the United States, there have been some additionally disturbing elements. From Flat Earthers, to Anti-vaxxers, to QAnon believers, there have been a lot of people who seem just generally paranoid about a lot of different things aside from COVID-19. And, oh yeah, the racism. Why are these protests collecting all the wackos, and how much weight should we give them? Kent 50. Speaking of protests, it was 50 years ago this week that four students were killed on the campus of Kent State University by National Guardsmen. To this day, no one knows who fired the first shot or why, but the so-called "Kent State Massacre" was the beginning of the end of the Vietnam War. We'll talk about the long-term impacts of what happened at Kent State, and how that affects the modern view of protest movements, especially for student-led protests. This week,  Don Sonney returns to to discuss his career in law enforcement and how it was influenced by his martial arts training. Don Sonney's martial arts training led him  to join the Ohio Highway Patrol, which he discusses today. during his time as a trooper he was selected for their newly founded Ranger program (which was the predecessor of the SWAT Team) He also become an Instructor at the Highway Patrol's Academy. Mr. Sonney's undercover career started during his time with the Highway Patrol, and amazingly his first undercover assignment was exactly 50 years ago at the Kent State Riots, also known by some as the Kent State Massacre, which he discusses in today's show.  His career continued as an Agent for the Ohio Attorney General, where he worked undercover on numerous  Investigations, focusing  on Organized Crime of Various Mafia Figures and their Assistants.  He also assisted the FBI on a number of cases. Some of his investigations included people, that were depicted in the 2011 film Kill the Irishman starring Ray Stevenson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Val Kilmer, and Christopher Walken, and the book To Kill the Irishman by Rick Porrello Mr. Sonney started his karate training in 1964, in Gary, Pennsylvania under one of the best competitors of the era, Artis Simmons. then went on to train with another of the era's top competitors, James McLain.  Don Sonney competed against, worked out with some of the top karate men the time, including Dr. Mel Wise, Phil Koeppel, Robert Trias, and was a close friend of the head of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu, Takayoshi Nagamine. May 4, 2020 was the 50th anniversary of the Kent Stae Massacre. For many of us from that generation this was a turning point. Unarmed college students killed by gunfire from the Ohio National Guard. Many of us have never recovered from the shock of that day. Today we covered the 50 year anniversary of the Kent State Massacre and what it means in today's society. Would we still hear an outcry after such an atrocity now? Possibly. We have the coronavirus pandemic to address if we're ever going to regain the trust of our youth because at this very moment we're the monsters that's underneath our children's beds. We aren't protecting them from death and disease, we're exposing them to more danger by supporting a government that has in effect set them on a course of shear survival.

In a program first broadcast on the BBC, Four Dead in Ohio tells the story of the Kent State Massacre, May 4th 1970. On that day the National Guard opened fire on several hundred students at Kent State University in northeastern Ohio. Four were killed, nine wounded. Two weeks later, two more students were gunned down at Jackson State in MIssissippi. IN this documentary built around sound recorded at Kent on the day and other sources, and interviews with survivors, Michael Goldfarb tells the story of the killings. he looks at how the event still influences politics and protest in an America as divided now as it was on that day.

On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Ken Hammond, an undergraduate at Kent State University before and during the Kent State Massacre, a speaker at the May 4, 1970 rally on the Commons, and an eyewitness to the shooting who was questioned and arrested by the FBI as one of the Kent 25 and went on to co-found the Kent Legal Defense Fund.Fifty years ago today, on May 4, 1970, members of the Ohio National Guard fired 67 rounds in 13 seconds into a group of unarmed, peaceful students protesting the illegal US bombing of Cambodia. Four students, Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Bill Schroeder, and Sandra Lede Scheuer, were killed and another nine were wounded. One was permanently paralyzed. The shootings led to protests against the Vietnam War at colleges and universities across America. But no National Guardsmen were ever punished for the murders. A new report by the International Energy Agency concludes that the coronavirus pandemic is delivering the biggest shock to the international energy system in more than seven decades. Global energy demand is down six percent this year. That’s ten times more than the drop in demand from the 2008-2009 recession. And demand for coal is down eight percent. That’s the biggest drop since World War II. This huge decline in energy demand has led to an eight percent drop in greenhouse gas emissions, the largest decrease ever recorded. But the United Nations says we would have to have similar decreases every year for the next decade in order to reverse the effects of climate change. Fred Magdoff, professor emeritus of plant and soil science at the University of Vermont and the co-author of “What Every Environmentalist Needs to Know About Capitalism” and “Creating an Ecological Society: Toward a Revolutionary Transformation” from Monthly Review Press, joins the show. People in Ukraine and around the world marked the sixth anniversary of the massacre of over 40 people in Odessa, Ukraine over the weekend. On May 2nd, 2014, a mob that included members of neo-Nazi organization Right Sector trapped anti-fascist activists inside a trade union headquarters and burned the building down. This month I had the pleasure of sitting down with my friend Bob Pierce.  I met Bob when I opened my business in Chelsea in 2016.  He was the Executive Director of the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce, and he was one of my first supporters of my business.  My first real interaction with Bob was in the lobby of the Ann Arbor Cumulus Media Studios, home of the Lucy Ann Lance radio show.  We were about to go on the radio to talk about the salon I was opening and he needed to get a feel for my vibe, my vision, and my character (and I got to know his).  Together, we totally killed it on the Lucy Ann Lance Show. A few years went by, and life had taken us on our separate journeys full of challenges and changes and triumphs. On May 4th, 1970, after the governor of Ohio announced that student antiwar protesters were “worse than Nazis” and the governor of California – Ronald Reagan – called for a “bloodbath,” Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire with live ammunition on the Kent State University campus, killing four and wounding nine.
