In Edmonton, Alberta, the sun had yet to come up. The temperature was more than 20 degrees below zero. In the dark and cold, Tanis Smith was ready to run up and down hundreds of stairs among the trees in the Saskatchewan River Valley. And Smith was not alone. Ten people joined her for the activity. All were wearing several layers of clothing to keep warm. “You're pretty much just putting everything you own on,” said Smith, an accountant. “If you look at the pictures, you don't know who you are unless you remember what you were wearing.” “你几乎只是把你拥有的一切都投入其中,”会计师史密斯说。“如果你看照片,你不知道自己是谁,除非你记得自己穿什么。” Since that winter back in 2013, Smith has rarely missed a workout with a group called November Project. November Project is a network of free outdoor group exercise classes that started in Boston, Massachusetts. No matter the weather, members get out of bed before sunrise at least once a week and go outdoors for group exercise. November Project is part exercise, part fun, and part community. It is a model for exercising outdoors, especially in the winter. It started in 2011, when two friends agreed to exercise every morning for the month of November. They were looking for accountability and motivation to help them stick to an exercise routine. By the end of that first month, they had invited others to join them. Soon, their meetings were bringing in almost forty people. And it became a year-round project. “A party is better when there's more people around. We would talk to anybody who would listen,” said Bojan Mandaric. He created the project with friend, Brogan Graham. “当周围的人越多时,聚会就越好。我们会与任何愿意倾听的人交谈,”博扬·曼达里克说。他与朋友布罗根·格雷厄姆 (Brogan Graham) 一起创建了这个项目。 Then, as people moved to other cities, they took the idea with them. So, the November Project grew. Now, there are 52 groups in eight countries, including 44 in the United States and Canada. People of all ages and fitness levels join the workouts. Some groups begin with something called “The Bounce.” They chant and jump at the same time to bring the group together. Those who feel inhibited, do not have to do this. Most classes include running and body weight exercises like squats. The project also uses the surroundings of the location. So, for example, some places include running up steps in an outdoor sports stadium. Currently in D.C., members meet on Wednesdays to run up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

We have been very quiet over here the last month at Wisconsin Notes as we shut up and listened to those who for so long have not been heard. I personally didn’t think my voice needed to be on the airwaves so I let the professionals take the mic and I did a ton of reading, listening and discussing. Of course, that work continues and will continue forever, and I wanted to share with everyone the conversations we have been having over on the November Project youtube channel. The sound quality is a little crunchy because they are made for youtube videos via Zoom, but I know that most people listen to things on the go, especially on the run, and wanted to make them available for more to hear. There are 4 total and I will be releasing them throughout this week and next. On this first episode, it’s a conversation the November Project HQ of myself, Brogan Graham and Bojan Mandaric had with our anti-racist educations, Soumya Palreddy and D.A. Dirks. It was recorded following the murder of Ahmaud Arbery and we have an open discussion about the mistakes we have made in the past with November Project and some of the ways we hope to improve in the future.

A couple weeks ago a large group of November Project leaders gathered in San Francisco for the endurance challenge series put on by the north face. Unfortunately, due to the Camp Fire and poor air quality, all of the races were cancelled. So here we were in San Francisco, staying in a large victorian rental home unable to venture outside with nothing to do. We played a lot of hide and seek, chugged a bunch of beers, and then recorded a series of short stories for this little podcast here. Up in the attic a dozen people sat on the floor with the story teller sitting at the mic facing the crowd. There was no theme or direction for these stories, just good ole story telling. To start this series off, here is November Project co founder and Serbian supreme, Bojan Mandaric.

BOJAN MANDARIC - Make sure to follow to the podcast on Instagram! - Happy Labor Day, world! We’re COMING IN HOT to September + fall with a powerful month of guests and connection. This week we’ve got Mr. Bojan Mandaric — approximately half of the duo that started November Project, the free fitness movement that’s taking over the world. Bojan grew up in Novi Sad, Serbia, and is a former rower on the Yugoslavian National Team and at Northeastern University. He now works full-time as a strategist at November Project. Talk about a FORCE. This dude is legit. Bojan and Brogan Graham (the other half of the duo) met in college and started working out together in November 2011 as a way to stay in shape and hold each other accountable. Since that original promise, the group has grown to hundreds of members and 49 tribes who exercise multiple times a week in a number of cities around the United States, Canada, Asia and Europe. November Project is also now a non-profit and responsible for hugs, happiness, community, neon clothing and debauchery in cities all around the world. Bojan gives us his take on how they got to where they are today, what’s next for NP, and how he made his “hobby” his full time job. - We chat about…. -How November Project started as a promise between two friends after graduating college -Why November Project will always be free -How NP spread to different cities….by accident -The logistics behind running 49 different tribes around the world -The moment that Bojan knew he had to quit his job and turn the free fitness movement into his full time job -How Bojan + Brogan assume different roles in running the November Project empire and the surprising fact about their friendship -Why you should #JustShowUp and join the movement in a city near you -How you can pledge to become the next NP tribe! …and so much more. - CONNECT WITH NOVEMBER PROJECT www.november-project.com Follow November Project on Instagram Follow November Project on Facebook Follow Bojan on Instagram Sign up for TNF Endurance Challenge this September! The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club.   The second rule of Fight Club? You know how it goes.   Lucky for us, the opposite is true for the founders of November Project, a fitness movement popularly known as the “Fight Club” of running clubs for its intense workouts, free membership, and tribe mentality.     Following their days rowing crew for Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, Bojan Mandaric and Brogan Graham found themselves struggling to stay in shape in the cold New England months and the absence of a structured exercise regiment.   Then one night in 2011 over a couple of beers, they decided to make a pact: every morning for that month of November, they would meet at 6:30am and workout together.   Running hill repeats, bounding up the stairs of Harvard Stadium, dropping to the ground for the occasional pushups - the city was their gym, and the results were significant.   After a few months, Bojan and Brogan decided to throw out a few invites on Twitter, and the rest is history.   November Project now has tribes in 45 cities all over the world with its biggest meetups bringing together upwards of 1500 people for a single morning workout.   Here Bojan and Brogan share a little about their story, how November Project works, and what you can gain from joining a tribe near you.   ****This episode includes some inappropriate language - just a heads up.****

“Pay attention to your voice. Be yourself. Be colorful. Be weird.”Brogan GrahamThere are leaders and then there are followers. The best leaders engender devotion to a big, new idea. But only a few successfully grow their conceit into a thriving a enterprise that withstands the test of time. Fewer still scale to mainstream cultural impact. Then there are the charmed select who simply see the world differently. Not how it is, but how it could be. How it should be. The rare figure who infuses his or her vision with a contagion of enthusiasm and connectivity so infectious and powerful, it ignites a revolution – catalyzing a movement that penetrates the mainstream, hypnotizes the masses and forever alters the perspective and behavior of all who fall under its spell. This is the story of Brogan Graham — an irreverent, way-outside-the-box fitness fanatic who, along with partner-in-crime Bojan Mandaric decided to flip the fitness industry on its head and make the world a better place with a creation dubbed November Project. No gyms or machines. No fees or dues. Just two dudes, wide open public space and a fervent, gung-ho tribe of thousands taking over not just urban landscapes but the world, one city at a time.If you’re into fitness and live in a metropolis, chances are you've already caught wind of NP. Maybe you've even attended one of their infamous morning workouts. But for those unfamiliar, November Project started as a simple month-long workout pact between Brogan and Bojan, two former rowers who wanted to stay fit through the cold New England months. One by one, a burgeoning community of fitness freaks joined the party. And before long, the few morphed into a fanatical multitude, bonding around NP's free, open-to-anyone, frentic sweat revivals – the more ice, sleet, snow, and rain the better.Dubbed “the ‘Fight Club' of running clubs”, November Project has matured into a flashmob fitness revolution that now dominates the pre-dawn urban landscape of cities all across North America, Europe, the United Kingdom and even parts of Asia. Thoroughly grassroots and populist to the core, it's a category-defying movement that is redefining how we think about and practice fitness by leveraging community, a simple sense of accountability and open public spaces to motivate and encourage people of all ages, shapes, sizes and levels — welcoming everyone from Olympic medalists and professional athletes all the way to complete fitness rookies and recent couch potatoes. The idea: use movement to turn strangers into friends and connect everyone to the city in which they live. The goal: world domination. This week I sit down Brogan — one-half of the beautiful high-energy, charismatic superhero duo that birthed it all — to find out how he did it, and why.I was super stoked to meet up with Brogan. From the minute he pulled into my driveway and gave me a bear hug (he's a big dude), I knew it was a bromance in the making. I have a strong feeling this is but the first of many future collaborations. This is an amazing conversation about the power of community and storytelling to drive positive cultural change. It's about the audacity to dream big, think different, and act outside the box. It's about the freedom and power of being you. And it's a conversation about unlocking untapped reservoirs of human potential to step into your best, most fully actualized self.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | Soundcloud | See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
