This helps people make connections, said Jason Shaw. He is co-leader of the Indianapolis, Indiana group. “Nobody (is) cool at November Project,” he said. “没有人对十一月项目很酷,”他说。 Shaw said groups recognize members' milestones. People can earn prizes for reaching different goals. To find out if a November Project group is near you, go to their website at November-Project.com. Building community and making friends is another big part of the project. So, each group is active on social media. If you do not have a November Project nearby, you can find another type of outdoor exercise group. Or start your own. The November Project organizers offer a few suggestions on how to work out during colder months. Find workout friends. At the center of the project, is accountability. Members promise to show up. There is a sense of letting down your teammates if you do not show up, said Mandaric, who moved to Boston from Serbia to row crew for Northeastern University. (Rowing crew is a type of boat racing.) There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing, said Shaw, the leader from Indianapolis. He suggests wearing clothing next to your skin that removes sweat. This will help keep you warm and dry. Avoid cotton, he warned. It keeps sweat in contact with your body and will make you colder. Also, add a top layer that protects against bad weather. In Edmonton, Alberta, the sun had yet to come up. The temperature was more than 20 degrees below zero. In the dark and cold, Tanis Smith was ready to run up and down hundreds of stairs among the trees in the Saskatchewan River Valley. And Smith was not alone. Ten people joined her for the activity. All were wearing several layers of clothing to keep warm. “You're pretty much just putting everything you own on,” said Smith, an accountant. “If you look at the pictures, you don't know who you are unless you remember what you were wearing.” “你几乎只是把你拥有的一切都投入其中,”会计师史密斯说。“如果你看照片,你不知道自己是谁,除非你记得自己穿什么。” Since that winter back in 2013, Smith has rarely missed a workout with a group called November Project. November Project is a network of free outdoor group exercise classes that started in Boston, Massachusetts. No matter the weather, members get out of bed before sunrise at least once a week and go outdoors for group exercise. November Project is part exercise, part fun, and part community. It is a model for exercising outdoors, especially in the winter. It started in 2011, when two friends agreed to exercise every morning for the month of November. They were looking for accountability and motivation to help them stick to an exercise routine. By the end of that first month, they had invited others to join them. Soon, their meetings were bringing in almost forty people. And it became a year-round project. “A party is better when there's more people around. We would talk to anybody who would listen,” said Bojan Mandaric. He created the project with friend, Brogan Graham. “当周围的人越多时,聚会就越好。我们会与任何愿意倾听的人交谈,”博扬·曼达里克说。他与朋友布罗根·格雷厄姆 (Brogan Graham) 一起创建了这个项目。 Then, as people moved to other cities, they took the idea with them. So, the November Project grew. Now, there are 52 groups in eight countries, including 44 in the United States and Canada. People of all ages and fitness levels join the workouts. Some groups begin with something called “The Bounce.” They chant and jump at the same time to bring the group together. Those who feel inhibited, do not have to do this. Most classes include running and body weight exercises like squats. The project also uses the surroundings of the location. So, for example, some places include running up steps in an outdoor sports stadium. Currently in D.C., members meet on Wednesdays to run up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

BedStuy Flyers was created as a way for people of various backgrounds and abilities to share space, work hard, have fun and always uplift each other along the way.  They believe that running should be accessible, safe and equitable, in Bedford-Stuyvesant and beyond. They have members at all levels, from those who walk the track to multi-marathon finishers. You can join them for free group runs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Coaches Tara Mardigan, a nutritionist and certified RRCA coach, also known as the plate coach, founded BedStuy Flyers in March 2017 to create an open and informal track workout in Bedford-Stuyvesant. After a job loss in 2016, she wanted to keep to a routine and would head to the track at Boys and Girls High School in Bed-Stuy on a weekly basis. She was inspired by the speed workouts she had done with Nike Run Clubs, in both Boston and NYC. A member of the November Project free fitness movement since 2012, she knew that accountability and community-building were a recipe for success and started inviting friends to her Track Tuesdays.  Nick Collins is a certified RRCA coach. He is also co-president of our sister club, Crown Heights Running Club, a proud NYC marathoner, and participant in the broader NYC running community.  Nick joined Bedstuy Flyers at its inception, energized by a supportive community showing up year-round and giving their best. “I think I've always been kind of intrigued by how far people can run.”In Episode 5 of Micromobility DC, I spoke with Joe Snowaert, a handyman + contractor DC (hit him up on Instagram @joeinthedistrict for your handyman needs). He is an active member of the district's running community—you can catch him at an early morning November Project workout or speeding along the Pacers Monday 7 mile route. If you thought the last two episodes were ultra-crazy, in this edition of the pod we talked about Joe's recent success at the Burning River 100 Mile Race (where Joe completed 101 miles!). Joe first attempted this race in 2020 and made it over 90 miles before his ankles swelled up like grapefruits. He wanted to attempt the race again in 2021 but had stress reactions in both tibias—those tibias, man. Third year is a charm as they say though. In 2022, Joe ran the race in (significantly) under 24 hours! While able to crush mile after mile after mile, Joe is an incredibly humble and kind human. You can tell he genuinely appreciates living in DC and the movement community he has found here. As he says, “I've always said that I will stay in DC as long as I like it. And I still like it four years later.”This episode is all about trying things out, trying again if a first you don't succeed, seeing where your body can take you, and enjoying the ride (or run) with your friends.

“Women really only get tougher. I've figured that out myself, and I've figured that out watching others. I don't really put a limit at this point of what being a mom and being a runner means anymore.” Welcome to the fifth and final episode in Season 2 of the Everyday Runner series. And today, we're getting a two-for-one deal, with Denver-based running best friends Robyn Mayer and Julia Berteletti! This warm-fuzzy-filled episode is all about the power of female friendships, both on the run and beyond. Julia and Robyn met through Twitter (remember those days?!) a decade ago, and eventually met in real life when they both moved to Colorado and started working out with November Project. On this episode, they share their real-life meet-cute moment, and talk about why they hit it off right away. They talk about their expectations about running after having children, and about the reality. Julia is mom to three-year-old Max, and talks about her hopes to have a second child, and the three miscarriages she has suffered along the way. Robyn is mom to two-year-old Rosie, and talks about her experience with Crohn's disease and how it affects her every day. Both women just ran CIM as their first marathons since becoming moms, so they reflect on how marathon training is different with a little one at home when you are also working full-time outside the home. Plus, what they talk about on the run together, and all about their Shalane Flanagan and Abby Wambach moment at CIM. Location: Remote Date: Sunday 28th November Project: tomerstrolight.medium.com Role: Writer The modern capitalist system is based on centralised and hierarchical structures of control. Bitcoin is a divergent innovation, structured to be decentralised. Progress is made through consensus, which forgoes the need to know or trust any of the parties involved. This can be an anathema to some people who are introduced to Bitcoin. They can not conceptualise how such a system can operate. This is partly because there has not been a great history of decentralised governance systems in modern societies.  Part of the issue may also be how people conceptualise Bitcoin. Trying to frame it around man-made systems may be a fool's errand. Is it better to compare it to less understood yet ubiquitous biological systems, specifically the human brain? In this interview, I talk to Bitcoin writer Tomer Strolight. We discuss how Bitcoin is analogous to the human brain, the organisation of decentralised systems, and the emergent nature of consciousness.

Location: Remote Date: Monday 22nd November Project: lynalden.com Role: Macroeconomist In the last month alone, Bitcoin has hit all-time high prices, Bitcoin on exchanges has hit multi-year lows, and El Salvador announced a $1 billion Bitcoin bond to fund the development of a Bitcoin city. At the same time, economic signals have started to flash red. Inflation is on the rise: it's hit 6.2% in the US and is rising at the fastest rate in decades. Traditionally strong bond markets are under pressure and currencies in some parts of the world show signs of distress. The dichotomy is that whilst some search for safe havens, with the lack of a positive yielding bond market, many are looking to riskier assets.  The economic conditions for bitcoin to become a recognised international gold-like reserve asset are upon us. The scope and scale of bitcoin adoption suggest that major players are literally buying into this narrative.  In this interview, I talk to macroeconomist and investment strategist Lyn Alden. We discuss the lack of yield in bond markets, El Salvador's bitcoin bonds, inflation and the direction and role of the Fed.

Location: Remotely Date: Thursday 11th November Project: anitaposch.com Role: Author, Podcaster, Educator It's easy to forget that those who have acquired Bitcoin are still early adopters, with the enthusiasm and courage to have found the appropriate resources needed to investigate this still nascent and mysterious creation.  However, the key to the next wave of Bitcoin adoption, encompassing a wider cross section of society, is education specifically tailored to the needs of later adopters. For these people Bitcoin is surrounded in myths and impenetrable concepts. This is precisely the goal of Anita Posch's new book (L)earn Bitcoin. It provides both the why, and the how, and is written for those to whom Bitcoin is a vague alien technology. Most importantly, the book provides guidance on how to take those initial steps to build confidence, and critically, safely buy and store bitcoin. Anita is also well known for being a leading Bitcoin educator in parts of the world for which sovereign wealth is literally life changing. In particular, Anita has travelled throughout Africa, teaching people with limited resources how to acquire and use Bitcoin. She is particularly focused on supporting vulnerable groups of women around the world for whom denial of sovereign wealth is culturally or even legally condoned.  In this interview I talk to fellow Bitcoin podcaster, author, advocate, and educator Anita Posch. Anita explains how Bitcoin provides emancipation from financial patriarchy at both the individual level and nation state level. We also talked about Anita's educational work in Africa, the importance of building bridges and trust with communities in developing nations.

How do you spark authentic connection? What is the foundation of meaningful friendship? How do you catalyze a movement? And most important, how do you create true community? As society reopens, we are presented with a unique opportunity to evolve, heal, and reconnect with one another in a new way.I can think of no better person to guide us in the lost art of friendship-making than the painfully charming and über-charismatic one they call BG.Meet Brogan Graham. Fitness fanatic. Extreme extrovert. Style icon. Force of Nature. Cool dad. Loyal friend and overall stellar human being. These are just a few of many labels I would pin to BG’s chest. An exceptional host during my April visit to Minneapolis (the whole thing was his idea), Brogan is the co-founder of November Project, a free and frenetic, open-to-anyone, grassroots sweat revival—a flashmob fitness revolution that counts over 250,000 lifetime members and dominates the pre-dawn urban landscape of 52 cities and nine countries spread across North America, Europe, the United Kingdom and even parts of Asia. Leveraging community, a simple sense of accountability, and open public spaces, the November Project motivates people of all ages, shapes, sizes and levels to move their bodies—welcoming everyone from Olympic medalists and professional athletes to complete fitness rookies and recent couch potatoes.Today’s conversation traverses many landscapes with a unique flair that can only be described as unapologetically Brogan-esque.Chronologically the first conversation recorded during my time in Minneapolis, we digest lessons delivered by a city and citizenship under duress—and why it’s necessary to never stop learning. We talk ‘dadding’, training, perfectionism, friendship, and the importance of getting outside your comfort zone—not just in the context of fitness but in all aspects of life. But the overall theme of this discussion is cultivating inclusivity. Why the path forward demands resisting the impulse to call people out. Instead, let’s call people in.As I’m fond of saying, prophets walk among us. Brogan isn’t just one such everyman prophet. He understands that to find these people, you need to always be on the hunt. You need to take swings at bat. You need to always be expanding your circle. And you need to develop the habit of reaching out to others, embracing your neighbors, and contributing to your community. This reflex begins with one simple word: hello. To read more click here. You can also watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I urge all of you to absorb this conversation in its entirety. Whip out your pen and paper—this is essential, potentially life-altering listening for every human. And simply put, it’s everything I hoped it would be.Brogan is a beautiful dude. I wish he lived in Los Angeles. But I’ll take him however I can get him.May his words inspire you to reach out to someone new today.P.S. – This is Brogan’s second spin on the RRP flywheel. How did Maria get here? Tina shares that a few months ago, she realized she wanted to bring someone on board to help her grow and steer Running for Real in a new direction. After posting a job listing, she was blown away with responses. But Maria’s caught her eye. She sent Tina a video answering the questions on the application. “Something in my gut just told me this is the right person,” Tina said.  What does she do? Maria’s focus is on storytelling and communications with a little twist of marketing. It’s about telling stories in ways that reach people’s heads and their hearts. She helps us define Running for Real and our mission of using running as a vehicle for internal and external change.  Maria makes you think twice about the word, “Awareness” “I was as guilty as anyone else of throwing around “raising awareness, awareness awareness,” says Tina. “Then Maria made me think twice about using that word.” Why?  Maria says back in college she took a communications class and the professor strictly said never to use the word “awareness.” We are all too familiar with organizations raising mealth awareness, environmental awareness, running awareness, etc. But just because you’re aware of something, it doesn't mean anything unless you act on it. If we don’t bring things into life then awareness doesn’t get us anywhere. “To know and not to do, is not to know,” Maria says. That is why she thinks we can all take a step further. Past awareness and into action. This is an excellent article for reference. Maria’s story Maria was born in Bogota, Colombia and her family moved to the U.S when she was three years old. She grew up in Gainesville, Florida, went to college at the University of Florida, and moved to Austin, Texas in 2018. While she doesnt fully identify with being fully Colombian or fully American, at an early age she learned to value hard work perseverance. It was ingrained at her from the beginning the importance of keeping in touch with her roots while taking advantage of living the land of opportunity.  Love of Water and Land Her love of sports began in the water. Swimming was a big part of her life and she swam competitively through high school. When she was younger, the only running she did was running stadiums as conditioning for swimming and she saw any sort of running as a chore.  That changed when she moved to Austin which is where she started doing triathlon and getting involved with November Project and other running groups like East Side Beer Runners and Austin Runners Club’s Morning Jo’s group.   “I was overwhelmed by the people that are part of the running community here. here. It wasn't this elitist runner group that I had in my mind, but a rather welcoming group of diverse runners who reeled me in and caused me to fall in love with the sport,” she says.  “Running is a common ground because we're all so different. It creates a safe space for us to have special conversations and form meaningful connections. Even for a long time, I didn't know what my friends did as day jobs because we just had so many other things to talk about!” Prickly Pear Prickly Pear is a mindset, a community that Maria and her sister Luisa started in 2018. They are sending out the message that you don’t have to follow the mainstream ideas. That you can go out on your own and do something different. That you can be yourself. They spread this message through their Instagram and their monthly publication called The Commissary that spotlights stories of everyday people doing positive things and spark curiosity. They’re bringing together people of different cultures and skills like artists, photographers, and small business owners so they can show up for one another and help each other live more meaningful lives. Tina describes it as more traditional media where it’s enjoyable to sit and read intentionally rather than scroll through. Maria’s 3-2-1 Corner Each week in Tina’s newsletter, Maria shares three things to ponder about, two recipes, and one challenge.  What makes the new Running Realized podcast special? Maria believes the word, “Realized,” is what makes this new podcast with Knox and Tina so special. “Realized” acts more of an action verb because it’s about turning conversations into actions that listeners and ourselves can take to be part of helping humanity thrive. It comes out on February 22nd. Where are we headed? Running for Real has undergone a revamp. There’s a new website, logo, and even the podcast has a new cover. But at the core, the mission remains the same: having honest and real conversations. Maria explains that hard conversations can be had with people who share different opinions if we are able to just find common ground. For us, the shared interest happens to be running. It’s what allows us to connect with others who have different backgrounds and cultures than ourselves yet share similar struggles.  “I think ultimately what I think Running for Real is about is literally humanity in running. So how can we show up as 100% human in this sport and then have that transcend into other areas of our lives? Whether it's how we show up with our partners, our neighbors, and our parents; how we show up at work; how we show up with the planet, and caring for the earth. So how can we just bring more humanity into running? We already have it in ourselves, but how can we show up even better.” Who is Amber Moore? Amber has so much heart. She cares for everyone she crosses paths with and cares deeply about them. She has been working alongside Tina for two years helping her keep Running of Real running (no pun intended) while Tina had Chloe during the summer of 2020 and works mostly in the background publishing podcasts and engaging with the community through social media.  “My favorite part is setting up the podcast because while it’s a huge project, I love that it comes together as a beautiful product that helps a lot of people,” she says. Amber is also a mom of three little ones and lives in Utah. Amber actually grew up playing soccer but her love for running has evolved over the last few years. She is a fountain of knowledge of Running for Real podcasts, having listened to pretty much every single one. In this episode, Amber shares her top 5 (and a bonus) episodes of the show: Amber’s Five Favorite Episodes Candice Huffine | Amber loves that Candice didn’t care what people thought of her and instead took the world on like nothing else mattered. That she was brave in her fight to figure out a place for herself since she wasn't accepted as a traditional size model because she was too large but she was too small to be considered plus size.  Hillary Allen | “She's a fighter,” says Amber. Falling and getting back up again and again. That’s what makes her so inspirational.  Dean Karnazes | “I just really like that even though he's this big, huge ultra marathoner, he has time for the little people,” Ambers says, “and I really enjoy that about this podcast whenever you have those types of people.” Rosalie Fish. | Amber shares, “me being in Utah, we have a lot of Native American reservations… but I hadn't realized I didn't realize that on actual Indian reservations how terrible it can be. And it really hurt me honestly. Everyone needs to be taken care of, but listening to Rosalie Fish and hearing all of the tragic things that she's heard about and gone through it made me really think about my own experience here in Utah. It made me really think about how my time is spent and who I should be helping.” Sanjay Rawal and Billy Yang “When I started running, I just wanted to get out there and with my lovely double stroller because I had two little kids at the time and I just pushed them everywhere I went. But with Sanjay, he really says that it's just you and the pavement and I loved how he spoke about running in a way that when you run you could just leave everything else behind.” Billy Yang is Amber’s bonus favorite. One she enjoyed learning about his struggles and how vulnerable and transparent he is with his runs.  Perhaps Amber’s favorite thing about all Running for Real is that there is always a life lesson in each episode. Paddy spent his childhood in Ireland growing up on a farm. His first athletic love was lacrosse, which he played at an international level before moving to SF and falling in love with running through the November Project. He shares how running helped him find his community in San Francisco and fall in love with all the city and the local trails and how that love transformed him into a professional athlete. Paddy shares what it was like returning to Ireland to chase the Wicklow Round FKT and how his Battle of the Bay Challenge and the Trial of Miles Chase the Throne challenge have kept him exploring, competitive, and connected during the pandemic. Plus we geek out on science and how this past year will shape the future of research and collaboration. Some highlights from our conversation:

What Bitcoin Did
Beginner's Guide #1: Andreas M. Antonopoulos on Why We Need Bitcoin - WBD182

What Bitcoin Did

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 3, 2020 61:47

Location: Skype Date: Monday, 11th November Project: aantonop.com Role: Author & Public Speaker Welcome to The Beginner's Guide to Bitcoin Bitcoin can be intimidating for beginners. The protocol is complicated, the community can be aggressive and unforgiving, silly mistakes can lose you money, and it is easy to succumb to altcoin marketing.  Bitcoin does though, offer you the opportunity to hold a new type of monetary asset, one which can't be seized by the government and is censorship resistance and It has the potential to change the way the world.  The goal of What Bitcoin Did has always been about making things simple; there are no stupid questions, and the show is here to help beginners navigate this new world. To kick off 2020, we are launching a special series to help beginners understand Bitcoin. We will be looking at the basics from breaking down the protocol to explaining the economics and discussing the potential societal shift.  Part 1 - Andreas M. Antonopoulos on Why We Need Bitcoin Bitcoin is multifaceted. Some treat Bitcoin as a speculative tool for growing wealth, others as a way of avoiding financial censorship from traditional payment channels, and some use it as a way of claiming their monetary sovereignty and removing power from the banks and state. The real reason Bitcoin is essential is for all of these reasons and more. On 3rd January 2009, Bitcoin was introduced to the world by its pseudonymous creator (or creators), going by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin brought with it an alternative to the banking system, a way of truly controlling your finances and to 'be your own bank'.  Being your own bank is incredibly powerful but is often a confusing and misused term. There are currently 1.7 billion people across the world who do not have access to proper banking services. Bitcoin can fix this by allowing users to hold, send and receive value. Cross-border payments are expensive and complicated using traditional banking and financial systems, and that's assuming the recipient has the means to receive payment. Bitcoin fixes this. Governments have a history of putting pressure on payment systems to stop allowing payments to recipients that they deem unfit. In 2010 Visa, Mastercard and PayPal all stopped allowing payments to WikiLeaks. Bitcoin fixed this. Bitcoin's power is in its decentralised, censorship-resistant, neutral, permissionless network that allows you to transact globally without any intermediary or third party and with whoever you want for whatever reason you want. Bitcoin doesn't care. We will soon be living in a cashless society, government-issued 'fiat' currency will become entirely digital, and we will wave goodbye to any remaining shreds of financial privacy that still exist. Some governments will look to create a cryptocurrency alternative; providing the perfect tool for increased financial surveillance and oppression and represents the antithesis of Bitcoin. So, maybe we will have to choose whether its Bitcoin or a state-run digital currency. Should we choose Bitcoin? This interview previously appeared on my other show Defiance and is a great starting point for the beginner's guide. Here I talk to Andreas M. Antonopoulos to find out. Andreas is a speaker and the best selling author of Mastering Bitcoin and The Internet of Money and is unrivalled in evangelising Bitcoin. Andreas explains why the current monetary and financial system is no longer fit for purpose and why Bitcoin may be the answer.

“Everyone is a runner. Some just chose not to run or don't know how to start.” - Coach JohnWelcome to Episode 11 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring running coach, consultant, and unofficial celebrity marathon pacer, John Honerkamp. We're in the thick of Fall race season, so I thought it would be the perfect time to interview Coach John. If you're a runner in NYC, you've most likely heard his name somewhere, as he has coached runners of all ages and abilities in the area for more than 20 years. John worked for the New York Road Runners (NYRR) for six years, and created a number of programs including the NYRR virtual trainer, NYRR group training, NYRR pace team and NYRR race predictor. He co-founded the November Project in NYC, and also is known for training and pacing celebrities in the NYC marathon, including Karlie Kloss, Caroline Wozniaki, Apolo Ohno, and Summer Sanders. In 2015, John started his own coaching and running-related consulting firm, J. R. Honerkamp, LLC.John was kind enough to come over to my apartment, and we recorded at my rickety kitchen table (which, in hindsight, was not the best location for acoustics…so my apologies for the sound issues). I loved hearing about his upbringing in a large family and being introduced to the NYC running scene at such a young age, and how his enthusiasm for running and later on, coaching, has continued for years to come. Even though he often paces celebrities, he clearly loves sharing his knowledge of and passion for the sport with absolutely everyone. Our discussion skewed a bit more towards running/coaching than nutrition, but I think you'll enjoy John's entertaining stories and words of running wisdom, especially my listeners who are currently in marathon training mode.
