Nathan, Matt, and David play a round of This or That, pitting mainline trainers against their premium counterparts to decide which they'd actually pick. They work through head-to-head matchups across several major brands — Asics, Brooks, Saucony, Hoka, Puma, and On — weighing the real-world differences in ride, value, and who each shoe is really for. We're thrilled to announce our apparel collaboration with Rabbit! The collection includes the EZ Tee SS, EZ Tee LS, and a unisex Go-to Hoodie. Pre-sale is open thru June 17th, with gear shipping the week of July 6th. Matt and Andrea work through a range of shoes they've been testing, sharing thoughts on the direction Saucony and Brooks are heading, Andrea's track spike adventures, and a mix of recent pickups including the Asics Kayano 33 and On Cloudmonster Hyper LS. The conversation then shifts to a broader question: whether the way we currently categorize running shoes has gotten overcomplicated, using the Brooks Hyperion Max 4, Mizuno Hyperwarp Pro, Saucony Endorphin Pro 5, Endorphin Azura, and more as jumping-off points for discussion. What do you think? How do you categorize shoes? We'd love feedback! In this week's episode of "Running: State of the Sport," Jared Ward becomes our first two-time guest on the podcast. We can't think of anyone better.Ward placed 6th in the 2016 Rio Olympic Marathon without the super shoes worn by the podium finishers. Neither he nor anyone outside Nike even knew about super shoes at the time.He soon began working with Saucony on that company's line of super shoes, and continued running fast times in major marathons. Ward hit his marathon PR, 2:09:25, in the 2019 Boston Marathon.Perhaps more importantly, he mentored a gaggle of younger BYU graduates like Conner Mantz and Clayton Young to their significant marathon careers. He also helped form the public/private "Run Elite Program" to encourage professional running in Utah while promoting health and fitness to the wider population. After moving his wife and six kids to Oxford, England, where he pursued an Executive Business Administration degree, Ward returned to near-top form this spring. Now 37, he ran a personal best 46:49 for 10 miles at Cherry Blossom, and then finished second in the Pittsburgh Marathon. In this podcast, he explains why BYU running has reached such a high level, and what he sees in his own running and business future. For more about Ward, see his profile on the Run Elite website.WHERE TO FIND "RUNNING: STATE OF THE SPORT"Use your smartphone to download our podcast from Apple, Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. "I was honestly terrified of [pregnancy]. I feel like whenever I looked around in the sport, I didn't see it. And if someone did get pregnant, it seemed like they disappeared. And if they came back, it seemed like it was against all odds," Molly Huddle shares with the Lane 9 Podcast. She is a 2x Olympian, has competed in six Olympic Trials throughout her career, and has run professionally with Saucony for 20 years. She has set multiple American Records, including the 5K, 10K, 10-miler and half-marathon, a few of which she still holds. And she was one of the first athletes to benefit from the Dream Maternity Campaign—activism organized around protecting pregnant and postpartum athletes with clauses in their professional contracts, instead of pausing their pay and their support. Molly is candid with us about the fears she held around pregnancy and returning to high level racing, the injuries she has navigated in her postpartum training, how hard it is to breastfeed and eat enough and train for races, the support systems she has in place, and how she's embracing the things she cannot do right now (like, keep a really clean house—not a priority!). She's working on a new book, and shares more about that, too! If you're looking for support as a pregnant or postpartum athlete, head to Lane9Project.org/directory to connect with a Lane 9 clinician.
Julia Paternain joins Elise to talk about the kind of year that changes everything. In 2025, Julia went from marathon debutant to World Championships bronze medallist, thanks to a stunning run in Tokyo where she surprised even herself. In doing so, Julia also became the first Uruguayan athlete to win a medal at a World Champs EVER! In this episode, Julia takes us inside that extraordinary rise, from her debut 2:27 marathon to the chaos, disbelief and pure emotion of crossing the line for bronze in Tokyo. We hear how she handled the brutal conditions, why she focused so hard on running her own race, and what was actually going through her mind in those now-ICONIC finish line moments. We get to know Julia's love of naps, fizzy drink and flat roads. There's also plenty on her fascinating international story – born in Mexico, raised in England, with Uruguayan roots and now representing Uruguay on the world stage. Julia shares why making the switch felt right, what that bronze medal meant for her family and country, and why returning to England for the London Marathon later this month feels especially full-circle. -- Julia Paternain is a distance runner who represents Uruguay and is sponsored by Saucony. She won a bronze medal in her second marathon ever at the World Championships Marathon in Tokyo in 2025. She holds the national record in the marathon for Uruguay (2:27:09), which she ran on debut. Julia grew up in the UK and moved to the United States in 2018 to study and run for Penn State University before transferring to University of Arkansas. She is now based in Flagstaff, Arizona with professional running group, McKirdy Trained. Julia is set to run London Marathon at the end of this month. -- Subscribe to Run With It wherever you get your podcasts, so you don't miss a thing! -- Follow us on Instagram: @juliapaternain_ @runwithit.pod @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer
"That injury was one of the most psychologically harrowing experiences of my career, just figuring out how to navigate that space, how to eventually see it as a superpower … if I hadn't gotten that injury, I wouldn't have been able to rebuild my body in a way that allowed me to come back a completely different athlete. I think because of all the work I had to do in the gym to address things I had never addressed my entire career, coming off of that gave me longevity." Elite runner Laura Thweatt had a lengthy career at the top level of the sport—while running for Saucony for more than a decade, the 2:25 marathoner finished fifth in the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, earned three US cross country titles, and made five US teams. But she also had many injuries, including osteitis pubis, a painful inflammation in the joint between the pubic bones. Recovery was long and difficult, but ultimately remade her as an athlete. That journey—along with other setbacks she's faced—taught her about standing up for herself, adjusting training to her needs, and practicing patience in the process. Now, she's retired and embarking on the next phase of her career, coaching other pro runners (including New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri) with the On Athletics Club in Boulder. Her experiences give her credibility and competence with her athletes, helping her create a space for them to navigate injury and thrive. Looking back, she's grateful for all she went through, knowing that it brought her to a place where she can still play an important role in the sport and its future.

Send us a textA Tahoe childhood can shape an athlete for life—and Noah McMahan proves it. At 19, he's a Gonzaga steeplechaser who keeps his easy runs on dirt, wins Broken Arrow 11K off a Hayward Field PR, and carries hard-earned lessons from the World Mountain Running Championships in Spain. We talk about the quiet confidence it takes to recover from injuries, the patience to build fitness through a long collegiate season, and the racecraft to navigate tight European singletrack when the start line explodes. We dig into what it means to balance D1 expectations with trail ambitions: coach buy-in, smart training blocks, and the reality of fitting a “fourth season” into a college calendar. Noah opens up about recruitment from a small Nevada school, why team culture sold him on Gonzaga, and how a kinesiology major helps him stay healthy. He breaks down the Worlds course—road surge, singletrack congestion, switchback duels—and the two changes he'd make next time: more hill-specific work and earlier positioning to avoid bottlenecks.Gear talk includes Nike Ultrafly on race day, a rotation that's open to Saucony for daily miles, and curiosity about adding poles for steeper 23K goals. We share inspiration from Max King, Kilian Jornet, Jim Walmsley, Ruth Croft, and the next wave of hybrid athletes bridging track, road, and mountain disciplines. If you're a young runner considering a future in trail running—or a fan who loves the sport's evolving pathways—you'll hear a clear blueprint for turning college structure into a sustainable pro trajectory. If this story resonates, follow the show, share it with a teammate, and leave a quick review on your favorite app. Your support helps us bring more emerging voices and big trail dreams to the mic.Follow Noah on IG - @noah_mcmahan_Follow James on IG - @jameslauriello Follow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_pod Use code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!
Today I am talking with two-time Olympian and Saucony athlete Molly Huddle, who just ran the Every Woman's Marathon six months postpartum with her second baby. Molly used the race as a long training run and shares what it felt like to approach the marathon in a more relaxed, flexible way than she has in the past while still respecting how hard 26.2 miles feels at any pace. We get into how life looks right now with two young daughters, how she and her husband are tag-teaming work and parenting, and what it has been like to train and race while breastfeeding. Molly explains why she chose this marathon as a fundraising opportunity for For All Mothers+, how she approached the effort on the day, and what she learned about her current fitness and recovery. Molly also talks about where she is with professional running at age 41, her hope to qualify for another Olympic Marathon Trials, and what it means to her to compete in a “part-time” or “semi-retired” way while she leans into coaching, writing, and parenting. We talk about identity shifts in motherhood, the invisible work that goes into raising kids, and how to stay engaged with the sport even when the goals and timelines look different than they did in your twenties. Finally, Molly shares more about the new pregnancy and postpartum running book she is co-writing, the research she is excited about, and her thoughts on aging, body image, and what it really means to let running “light you up,” whatever season of life you are in. Topics Discussed: Molly's decision to run the Every Woman's Marathon six months postpartum Using a marathon as a long training run instead of an all-out effort Balancing breastfeeding, travel, and race-day logistics with a baby and a toddler Fundraising and partnering with For All Mothers+ at the race How the Every Woman's Marathon creates an unintimidating, women-centered race experience Postpartum training, injury history, and choosing a more cautious path back Shifting identity from full-time pro runner to part-time competitor, coach, and writer Motherhood, invisible labor, and how priorities around work and running change Body image, aging, and pressure around appearance and performance The new pregnancy and postpartum running book and current women's health research Support Our Sponsors: Amazfit Smartwatches – A wellness and recovery brand offering targeted supplements designed to support runners with energy, strength, and sleep. Today's episodes are some of my favorites. I hate stories of just wavetops, and I love stories about people who refuse to give up on what they believe and have built. Don't sleep on this episode; there is much to be gained and learned. Dan Ellis has been making performance footwear for 35+ years, starting his shoe-making career at Saucony, where he worked at their factory in Maine, learning each step in the shoe-making process. He went on to work for Adidas and Reebok, making specialized shoes for multiple Olympic and professional athletes. In 2005, DEVCOM (aka "Natick Labs") asked Dan to work with the Navy SEALs to develop a suite of boots, which turned into the brand OTB Boots. One elite unit nicknamed him "Bootmaker to the Good Guys", which is used today as a tagline for the OTB Boot Brand. Jackie Gaughan is one of the fastest marathoners in the United States. She's a Boston-based, Saucony sponsored athlete who ran for the University of Notre Dame where she earned All-conference honors in both cross country and track. She qualified for the 2024 US Olympic Marathon Trials at Berlin, where she was the second American finisher. She holds a personal best of 2:24:40 in the marathon and 1:10:01 in the half marathon. Jackie's also a full-time financial analyst for Goldman Sachs, often working 50-60 hours a week. How does she run more than 100 miles per week, with hard workouts and long runs? She also doubles most of the time as well. We're going to dive into: her schedule work hours when she goes to sleep and gets up how she structures her training her favorite recovery strategies for busy people Please also congratulation Jackie on her recent 21st place finish at the 2025 Boston Marathon! There'll probably be cool and crisp fall weather for racing fast, too. And don't worry, Boulderthon is a BQ-eligible, USA Track & Field Sanctioned Event. Boulderthon is on track to sell out again this year so don't miss out. Use code STRENGTH20 to save $20 on the marathon or half-marathon here and I hope to see you in Boulder this fall. Thank you Gut & Green Superfoods! Previnex's new Gut & Green Superfoods greens powder is my new go-to. It has organic barley and oat grass, alfalfa, spirulina, chlorella, kale and broccoli… and that's it. Their ingredients are backed by clinical data and contain three specific gut fibers that help promote GI health, digestion, reduced inflammation, and a better microbiome. It has twice the amount of fiber than my last greens mix and, best of all, it actually tastes good. Try it for yourself here at previnex.com and be sure to use code “JASONGREENS” to save 15% off your first order. Don't tell anyone, but if you put Gut & Green Superfoods powder in your cart, then the 15% off discount will work for anything else you add into your cart as well. And by the way, with every order they donate vitamins to kids in need. Thanks Previnex.
This week I'm sitting down with Joy Allen-Altimare, the Chief Marketing Officer at Saucony. Such an interesting time to have this conversation with everything that's going on both for the brand as they really are in this fun-to-watch reinvigoration phase, as well as what's going on here in the U.S. with the tariffs. Joy talks to me about how being a swimmer growing up in Chattanooga really shaped a big part of her mindset and empowered her to think differently and progressively as a leader. We talk about what it looks like for her to lift up other women both in and out of the office, and what we can expect from Saucony as a brand as we look ahead into the rest of 2025 and 2026. Plus: She also shares her takeaways on the evolution of sports style, and why it's important to have your own board of directors.SOCIAL@joyaltimare@emilyabbate@hurdlepodcastOFFERSLagoon Sleep | Head on over to LagoonSleep.com/Hurdle and use code “HURDLE” at checkout for 15% offPILLAR | Head to PillarPerformance.shop, or for North American customers, head to TheFeed.com and use the code HURDLE for 15% off your first purchase.JOIN: The Daily Hurdle IG ChannelSIGN UP: Weekly Hurdle NewsletterASK ME A QUESTION: Email hello@hurdle.us to ask me a question to be answered in an upcoming episode!
