O amplă manifestație antiguvernamentală a avut loc sîmbătă, în Serbia, la Belgrad. Organizațiile studențești au chemat cetățenii din toată țara să vină la protest, sub sloganul „Studenții cîștigă”. Evenimentul de sîmbătă a fost precedat de un an și jumătate de proteste declanșate în noiembrie 2024, după ce acoperișul gării din Novi Sad, proaspăt renovată, s-a prăbușit, omorînd 16 oameni. Protestatarii acuză de-atunci autoritățile de corupție. Care e istoricul protestelor în acest an și jumătate care s-a scurs din noiembrie 2024 pînă acum? Ce vor manifestanții să obțină? Se poate coagula o mișcare politică în urma acestor proteste care durează deja de un an și jumătate? Am întrebat-o pe Miruna Butnaru-Troncotă, prof. univ. la SNSPA, specialistă în zona Balcanilor. Miruna Butnaru-Troncotă: „Au fost proteste aproape permanente, e un fenomen civic mai puțin întîlnit pînă acum. Vorbim de un nucleu al studenților, de la mai multe specializări. Ei sînt primii care au ieșit, pentru o manifestație de doliu, inițial, și de condamnare a actelor de corupție, care s-a transformat apoi în proteste de masă. Asta înseamnă că li s-au alăturat sindicatele, fermierii și o parte a clasei de mijloc și, ceea ce a fost foarte important pentru studenți, profesorii din universități. Profesori care și-au pus în pericol uneori chiar locul de muncă, pentru că președintele Aleksandar Vucic a început o serie de acțiuni de intimidare a acestora, de desfacere a contractelor de muncă. Mulți au ajuns în justiție, iar unii și-au pierdut locul de muncă. Vorbim aici de profesorii care au sprijinit protestele deschis, nevrînd să mai intre la ore. E important de spus că studenții au blocat universitatea și aproape un an de zile nu s-au mai ținut cursurile. Sigur, apoi au apărut și niște contra-manifestații, cu alți studenți, pro-guvernamentali, care spuneau că dreptul lor la educație trebuie luat în considerare și să se revină la cursuri. Deci a fost foarte vizibilă polarizarea societății sîrbe. Societatea civilă fusese redusă la tăcere – asta ne arată cam toate studiile și toate sondajele de opinie privind libertatea presei și libertatea societății civile în Serbia. Regimul a devenit din ce în ce mai autocrat, fundațiile și organizațiile non-guvernamentale au un spațiu foarte mic de manifestare și atunci aceste proteste au devenit și spațiul de manifestare liberă a societății civile. Cercetători în științe politice care urmăresc atent au încercat să definească acest tip de protest ca fiind unul studențesc, non-partizan, pentru că ei nu sînt asociați cu nici un partid politic, sînt efectiv doar proteste anti-guvernamentale și care în acest moment au și o solicitare direct politică și anume alegeri anticipate. Dar pînă acum nu a existat o poziționare politică și nici o asociere. Studenții au refuzat să aibă un lider, nu există un lider al acestei mișcări, totul este împărțit între organizațiile studențești, tocmai pentru a nu fi atacați ca actor politic și au refuzat orice asociere cu un partid politic. Lucru care a atras și o serie de semne de întrebare sau animozități legate de ce va fi mai departe, de cum poţi s-o ții în proteste în continuu. Protestele obosesc  și mai departe ai nevoie, totuși, de legitimitate democratică, ai nevoie să intri în alegeri. Lucru care acum a devenit un subiect mult mai acut, fiind deja aproape o nouă rundă de alegeri. Următoarele alegeri sînt în 2027.”După catastrofa din 2024, premierul Serbiei și primarul din Novi Sad au demisionat. Dar protestele nu s-au oprit. De ce, ce vor manifestanții să obțină?Miruna Butnaru-Troncotă: „Da, iniţial, ei au cerut tragerea la răspundere a mai multor persoane pentru ceea ce am numi corupția generalizată, corupția la un nivel înalt, atît între cei care au făcut acele renovări de proastă calitate, cît și între instituțiile guvernamentale care au finanțat. În justiție, părinții victimelor nu și-au văzut dreptatea. Procesele stagnează. Şi trebuie spus că toți indicatorii democratici din ultimele luni, publicați de Bertelsmann Stiftung sau V-DEM, de la Institutul pentru Democrație, arată Serbia ca fiind, după Ungaria, la acel moment condusă de Orbán, statul cu coeficientul cel mai scăzut în ce priveşte calitatea democrației. Studenții reclamă deteriorarea instituțiilor democratice, ceea ce se traduce și în stagnarea în procesul de integrare europeană. Eu i-am cunoscut personal, anul trecut, am fost la un festival de film unde au fost invitați ca speakeri doi dintre ei. Am fost foarte impresionată, pe de-o parte, de oboseala lor, de faptul că deja spuneau că sînt epuizați de aceste proteste, dar, pe de altă parte, și de ceea ce simțeam că le dă totuși energie și anume gîndul la viitor. Ei spuneau ne dorim să rămînem în țară. Vedem că în celelalte state din Balcanii de Vest singura oportunitate pentru un tînăr să aibă o viață decentă și să beneficieze de meritocrație și de o viață care să nu-l condamne la a da mită în stînga și în dreapta este să plece din țară. Iar ei spuneau noi nu vrem să plecăm din țară, noi vrem să rămînem în Serbia, dar nu în această Serbie. Ne dorim o Serbie democrată. Şi unii din ei făceau comparația cu părinții lor. Părinții noștri, spuneau, au ieșit în stradă împotriva lui Milošević pentru a avea o Serbie europeană. Protesters accused the government of corruption and of covering up the truth about what happened. The government accused the protesters of being foreign agents, supported and organised by malign outside forces. Now, after more than a year, the mass protests have finally subsided. When we first started The People's Countryside Project, it was all about people working in the countryside. We made films, took photographs, wrote articles, and eventually developed this podcast.Then COVID hit and you, the listeners, started sending in questions. That's really when the format stuck. Since COVID we've answered two listener questions an episode. We don't see the questions before we press record, and we always try to bring the conversation back to the countryside in some way.Our first listener today question comes from Felix in Novi Sad, Serbia - “Why does time move in only one direction?”William reflects that time is a human construct, while our lives naturally move forward and we age as part of that ongoing process.Stuart reflects that processes simply happen, and questions whether if time only exists in the present moment, it can truly be said to move forward. He wonders if what we perceive as movement through time might instead involve multiple directions occurring at once.William suggests that while the environment and life may appear to move in one direction, it is still a process that individuals can influence. Through their own actions, people can affect how that process unfolds.Stuart suggests that real exploration often happens when people step away from established paths. By going where there are no roads, he implies that new understanding and perspectives about the environment can emerge.The second question for today's episode is from Steve in Cambridge, England - “Hi Both, After being on my own recent journey of self-reflection and growth, I've been reflecting about how personal development and Stoicism fit into modern life. There's that line in The Matrix ‘There's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.' It makes me wonder whether our culture's obsession with self optimisation has made us better at knowing the path but worse at walking it. Do you think this clashes with genuine self acceptance and can Stoicism still work in a world that encourages emotional openness? on a personal level, what are your top three realisations or shifts from your own journey of growth? Thank you”.Stuart interprets stoicism simply as continuing to move forward, regardless of what happens, though he questions whether just “keeping going” is always the right response. If we keep doing the same thing, surely we're going to keep getting the same end results? William believes that everyone is unique, shaped by their own experiences, upbringing, peers, work, and life events. While you can learn from others, ultimately you are forging your own path and must figure things out for yourself.Stuart observes that our culture consists of individuals "pissing in the wind," with no one truly knowing what they are doing or escaping death. He questions whether society is obsessed with self-optimization or, through social media, with appearing to lead an optimal life.William believes that we all need a healthy dose of genuine self-acceptance. While habits and work methods can be changed, many personal traits are difficult or impossible to alter. Un rassemblement d'une ampleur sans précédent a rendu hommage samedi aux 16 victimes de la catastrophe de la gare de Novi Sad, survenue il y a un an. La mobilisation contre la corruption continue, et la détermination des manifestants à obtenir la convocation d'élections anticipées reste intacte. Mobilisation en Serbie Dimanche (2 novembre 2025), la mère d'une des victimes de l'effondrement du toit en béton de la gare de Novi Sad a entamé une grève de la faim pour que justice soit rendue, alors que plus de 100.000 personnes s'étaient rassemblées dans le calme samedi pour rendre hommage aux 16 personnes mortes dans la catastrophe, il y a un an. C'est le plus imposant rassemblement jamais organisé sur place depuis lors et cette mobilisation massive montre à quel point la détermination de l'opposition au régime d'Aleksandar Vucic reste intacte. Doch von der Armee kommt nun Widerstand: Das Programm sei in weiten Teilen nicht nutzbar, da klassifizierte Dokumente dort gar nicht gespeichert werden dürften. Über drei Kilometer soll die Brücke zwischen dem italienischen Festland und Sizilien dereinst in der Luft hängen, ohne Zwischenpfeiler. Das wäre Weltrekord. Doch diese Woche hat das Projekt einen herben Dämpfer erlitten. Der Rechnungshof weist das Vorhaben wegen diverser Mängel zurück.

Vor genau einem Jahr löste der Einsturz eines Vordachs am Hauptbahnhof von Novi Sad nicht nur eine Tragödie mit 16 Toten aus, sondern auch die bislang größte Protestbewegung der serbischen Geschichte. Seit zwölf Monaten gehen Studierende und zahlreiche andere Bürger auf die Staße um gegen das System Vučić zu demonstrieren. Am Jahrestag der Tragödie mobilisierte die Protestbewegung an den Ort, an dem alles seinen Ausgang genommen hat: Novi Sad. Und die Menschen kamen wieder zu Tausenden. Manche von ihnen über hunderte Kilometer zu Fuß. Krsto war für "Neues von Ballaballa-Balkan" wieder einmal vor Ort und berichtet. In Serbiens jüngster Innenpolitik gibt es eine markante Zäsur: Den Einsturz des Bahnhofsvordachs in Novi Sad am 1. November vergangenen Jahres: 16 Menschen kamen diesem Tag ums Leben, begraben unter den Trümmern eines tief liegenden Vordachs. Der Bahnhof in Novi Sad war erst wenige Monate zuvor nach dreijährigen Renovierungsarbeiten wieder in Betrieb genommen worden - wobei das Vordach nicht erneut worden war. Seitdem protestieren immer mehr Menschen gegen das Herrschaftssystem von Staatspräsident Aleksandar Vučić . Der Dacheinsturz wurde zum tragischen Symbol der weit verbreiteten Korruption in Serbien. Die Verantwortlichen müssten zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden. Die Proteste gegen Vučić lange Zeit blieben lange Zeit friedliche. Im Sommer gab es aber zunehmend Gewalt. Gewalt, die vor allem im August zunächst von gewalttätigen Anhängern und Parteifunktionären Vučićs mehrfach provoziert war. Gleichzeitig hat der Regierungschef ein konsequentes Handeln des Staates angekündigt. Die Proteste fordern vorgezogene Parlamentswahlen. Vučić und seine Regierungspartei SNS lehnen das ab. Sie diskreditieren die Menschen auf der Straße wahlweise als Terroristen oder vom Ausland gesteuert. Die Gewalt hat die Proteste aber nicht abflauen lassen, im Gegenteil. Das Thema bewegt viele in Serbien weiterhin. Seitdem ist die Situation im Land festgefahren als vorher. Es wirft die Frage auf: Wo steht Serbien gerade? ARD-Südosteuropa Korrespondent David Freches berichtet.

Cela fait près d'un an qu'elle manifeste contre la corruption du régime, depuis l'effondrement de la gare de Novi Sad qui a fait seize morts en novembre dernier. Mais le président Vucic refuse toujours d'organiser des élections anticipées et la répression se fait de plus en plus violente. C'est le reportage à Belgrade de Louis Seiller.   « Fractures dans l'Occident » La montée du populisme en Europe, favorisée à la fois par l'ingérence russe et américaine et la nécessité pour l'Europe de prendre en main sa propre défense, au vu du désengagement américain. En somme, il s'agit de la remise en cause de tous les fondamentaux sur lesquels nos démocraties européennes se sont construites depuis 1945.  C'est tout l'objet du livre de Nicole Gnesotto, vice-présidente de l'Institut Jacques Delors et professeur émérite au Cnam qui publie, aux éditions Odile Jacob, Fractures dans l'Occident.   L'impensable pour les Européens, c'est la perte de confiance dans leur allié historique, les États-Unis. Un véritable dilemme. Peut-on avoir pour allié dans la défense un ennemi politique ?   L'Allemagne et la « diplomatie de la saucisse » Et dans ce monde fracturé, certains débats peuvent paraitre bien dérisoires. La semaine dernière, le Parlement européen a interdit l'usage de mots comme saucisse ou steak pour parler de produits végétariens. Mais c'est un débat qui agite beaucoup la scène politique allemande, Delphine Nerbollier. 

Voilà bientôt un an que la Serbie est secouée par un important mouvement de protestation contre la corruption. Depuis la catastrophe de la gare tout juste rénovée de Novi Sad, qui a fait 16 morts le 1er novembre 2024, le régime autoritaire d'Aleksandar Vucic est dénoncé par des manifestations et des blocages de rues. Alors que le président, notoirement proche de la Russie, refuse toujours d'organiser des élections anticipées, les étudiants sont à la pointe de ce mouvement résolument pacifique et démocratique. Mais depuis plusieurs semaines, ils font face à une répression de plus en plus violente. Comme des milliers de jeunes Serbes, Dusan Svetkovic a passé l'été à bloquer les rues de Belgrade pour exiger des élections anticipées. Mais le 14 août dernier, lors d'un rassemblement près de la place Slavija, le destin de cet étudiant en physique bascule. « Je me tenais tranquillement près de la fontaine quand une voiture sans plaque est arrivée. Des hommes en civil en sont sortis, et l'un d'entre eux s'est précipité vers moi et m'a violemment jeté au sol. Quatre ou cinq autres hommes sont arrivés, et ils ont commencé à me frapper et à me donner des coups de poing au visage. Ils m'ont frappé la tête contre le sol, et l'un d'entre eux m'a donné des coups de pied avec ses bottes, alors que j'avais la tête sur le goudron », se souvient-il. Embarqué par les hommes de cette unité spéciale, Dusan affirme avoir été battu et menacé de mort dans un garage situé sous le siège du gouvernement, avant d'être relâché trois heures plus tard. Le lendemain, à quelques centaines de mètres de là, Alexandra Nikolic tombe à terre lors d'une charge policière. Elle reçoit un coup de matraque sur le crâne du policier. « Vu comment la police s'est comportée pendant ces dix derniers mois de contestation, je ne m'attendais à rien de bon de leur part. Mais je n'imaginais même pas qu'ils nous frappent par derrière, alors que nous étions deux femmes tombées au sol », explique l'étudiante en droit, montrant les photos de son visage ensanglanté. Elle dénonce la dérive autoritaire du régime du président Aleksandar Vucic : « La justice, la violence, les médias, les insultes... Les autorités utilisent tous les moyens dont elles disposent pour réprimer leurs citoyens. Personnellement, je considère que cela relève d'un type de fascisme. Avec cette philosophie du "où vous êtes avec nous, où vous êtes contre nous", pour moi, il est clair que l'État emploie des méthodes fascistes. » Usage illégal de la force, séquestration dans des lieux non officiels, absence d'avocats... Les méthodes de répression employées par le pouvoir sont aujourd'hui documentées par plusieurs ONG. Les étudiants et les opposants dénoncent notamment la mainmise du SNS, le parti présidentiel, sur l'appareil judiciaire. Des pratiques bien éloignées des valeurs de l'Union européenne, à laquelle la Serbie est toujours officiellement candidate. Alors que le président Vucic se montre inflexible, des élections pourraient avoir lieu en avril 2026. En attendant, les étudiants se préparent et envisagent de présenter leur propre liste lors de ces législatives. Espérant ainsi ouvrir des premières brèches dans un système jusque-là verrouillé. Los estudiantes se preparan para pasar a una nueva etapa con responsabilidades políticas ante un movimiento que persiste desde hace diez meses contra el Gobierno de Aleksandar Vučić . Este verano, las imágenes que llegan de las repetidas protestas antigubernamentales en Serbia han cambiado de tono. Gobierno y activistas se acusan mutuamente de utilizar medios violentos en las manifestaciones que suceden en distintos puntos del país, donde es más habitual que opositores y seguidores de Vučić se enfrenten en las calles. El momento más álgido de la violencia se vivió la noche del lunes 18 de agosto, con la demolición de una sede del partido gobernante SNS y una veintena de manifestantes detenidos. Las protestas empezaron tras un accidente el 1 de noviembre de 2024 en la estación de tren de Novi Sad, la segunda ciudad del país. El movimiento nació pidiendo responsabilidades por la supuesta corrupción del gobierno en obras públicas, pero su crecimiento y persistencia ahora hace tambalear el gobierno de Vučić, que lleva once años en el poder.  “La gente se ha organizado para organizar protestas locales, bloqueando las calles, y, desde el 12 de agosto, en el Día Internacional de la Juventud, se ha visto mucha violencia por parte de quienes no apoyan a los estudiantes y por parte de la policía, que está arrestando a personas en las calles”, cuenta Anica Stamenkovic, miembro de la Junta del Consejo Nacional de la Juventud de Serbia, un organismo que representa a 108 organizaciones juveniles y es el máximo órgano representativo independiente de la juventud en Serbia. “Las protestas y los bloqueos de las calles comenzaron a ser más violentos, y cuando decimos violentos, nos referimos a que la gente está siendo golpeada, atropellada por coches, les lanzan piedras, artefactos pirotécnicos...", sigue Anica. El presidente serbio ha pasado de criminalizar a los manifestantes a pedir un debate con los estudiantes en televisión, que se plantean formar un partido político. Algo que ellos rechazan mientras piden elecciones generales de inmediato. "Desafortunadamente, la hora del diálogo ha terminado. No puede haber debates televisivos mientras haya violencia en las calles. Creo que los estudiantes no quieren un duelo televisivo. Solo quieren derechos humanos básicos: vivir en un país con democracia y Estado de derecho", responde la líder estudiantil. Una encuesta del Consejo Nacional de la Juventud de Serbia revela que el 95% de los jóvenes de entre 15 y 30 años apoyan a los manifestantes. El mismo sondeo indica que el 60% de los encuestados cree que la democracia es la mejor forma de gobierno, lo que representa un aumento del 20% respecto al año anterior.
