Liz Stringer is one of Australia's most admired and versatile songwriters and instrumentalists. Liz has teamed up with William Crighton for a co-headline tour that will hit The Cambridge Hotel on March 24, they have also just released a cover of Midnight Oil's iconic tune ‘Golden Age'.
In 2005, when Wolfmother released their debut self-titled album, they not only set the world on fire but also, along with Jet, gave no doubt that rock was back and back in a big way. ‘Joker & The Thief' and ‘Woman' became favourites and the album sold well over 1.5 million copies worldwide. Now, after 5 albums under their belt, Wolfmother are coming to Newcastle's Cambridge Hotel this Thursday night for what promises to be a big night - ahead of the show, we welcome to The Good Stuff, from Wolfmother, Andrew Stockdale . . .

In a devastating blow to what remains of Newcastle's live music scene, arguably the city's most beloved live music venue The Cambridge is headed for the wrecking ball. As Newcastle Live reports, the iconic hotel will call last drinks mid-way through next year to make way for student accommodation. In a situation eerily reminiscent of Sydney's The Lansdowne, which is set to close and be replaced by hostel accommodation once the current tenants' lease expires, property developers Linkcity are reportedly planning to convert The Cambridge into a 19-storey student accommodation with 500 rooms, dining and retail outlets and student common areas in a multi-million-dollar development. The developers say they want to create “a safe sanctuary for young people that may be living away from home for the first time”, and a licensed venue apparently does not align with that goal. The final round of RISE funds has been allocated, with millions funneled into scores of live projects, including several decisions that will surely raise eyebrows. Canberra's $200 million budget for its Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand fund (RISE) breaks off the remaining $20 million for the arts, the bulk of which is injected into the struggling concerts space and the performing arts, including theatre and dance. Music festivals, crippled by the the trifecta of bushfires, floods and the pandemic, are among the big winners. Jaddan Comerford's UNIFIED Music Group is successful with its application for a regional showcase and merchandise pop-up store project featuring performances and goods designed by artists on its roster. The Melbourne-based group receives $480,000. Also, $600,000 is earmarked for Empire Touring on a national tour of Australian performers visiting 23 locations to “pay tribute to the world's best,” including The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, John Lennon and David Bowie. British India land $140,000 to support the indie rockers on a national tour “with a focus on regional towns.” Also getting a win is Queensland's Yeehaa Events, which receives $577,500 to present NQ's Rock'n Country, featuring more than 40 homegrown acts which the organisation is confident will “reboot the industry and the careers of emerging artists.” Concerts giant Live Nation receives $97,500 to produce the “On Stage” series at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne, part of the group's vast live entertainment empire. Knocked Loose are just what the Colonel ordered: A fresh batch of Kentucky-fried, scorched-earth, brutal-beatdown hardcore to throw bodies off stages to. The band's menacing and unrepentant approach to the genre has cemented them as heavyweights despite only being two albums and a handful of years in. Hell, even Corey Taylor has championed them as the future of heavy music. How did these southern boys send their trajectory skyward? Prior to a show in Newcastle with Jesus Piece, vocalist Bryan Garris and drummer Kevin "Pacsun" Kaine broke down their own personal musical histories and how they inevitably intertwined within a small town that they turned into a global village for hardcore. Thanks to Janine Morcos, Dallas Does PR, Mark Bawden, Ash Hull, Greg Bower, Destroy All Lines, the Cambridge Hotel and Paul McWhirter. They may be tiny dots on an endless timeline, but La Dispute have made their time together count. Over 15 years and four studio albums, plus a dozen EPs and countless tours, the band's unique and poetic take on post-hardcore has endeared them to a global audience. Theirs is the definition of a cult following - they may not pack arenas, but everyone at a La Dispute show will scream every last word right back in the band's face. One of the band's key turning points was coming to Australia for a completely DIY national tour back in 2009, and the country has become a second home for the band - quite literally in drummer Brad Vander Lugt's case, as he now lives on the Sunshine Coast with his family. Both he and vocalist Jordan Dreyer - not only cousins, but the founding members of the band - tracked the band's history before one of the final stops on their most recent tour, at the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle. There ain't no party like a RAAVE TAPES party. The Newcastle dance punks have been on a steady ascent for the last couple of years on the back of some dazzling live shows and killer singles. Now, with single 'Suds' out in the world, their positive partying is reaching a bigger audience than ever before. Take this night, for instance, where Raavies sold out Wollongong's Rad Bar and promptly dominated it. Before they did, however, the band - vocalist/guitarist/founder Joab Eastley, bassist Lindsay McConnell and drummer Lewis Horne - sat down and we all gathered 'round to hear tales of footy, friendship and a bunch of Newy stuff. RAAVE TAPES' new single SUDS is out now.Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUkeGLMSXHY RAAVE TAPES Shut Down The Cambridge Hotel is happening this Saturday at the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle. "For one it's turning ten so we obviously wanna celebrate that, but it's a really good opportunity for us," beamed Craig Mabbitt, vocalist for Escape the Fate on the eve of their Australian tour where they will be playing This War is Ours in its entirety plus a selection of their greatest hits. "Funnily enough my very first tour with Escape the Fate was Australia so for us to come full circle ten years later and for us to have the opportunity to come out there and play this album front to back to celebrate where we've been, where we've come from; the past, the present and the future is a really cool opportunity that we're all looking forward to."It would be fair to say no band ever plans on playing any of their albums in their entirety at any stage of their career when they are working on it, and Mabbitt laughs when asked if that was the case with This War is Ours."When you're in the studio writing an album you're not really thinking about the longevity of it," he smiled. "It's more like man, I hope this ends up being the biggest album with the biggest songs in the world and ends up taking over the whole world, that's kind of all you're thinking (laughs) but at the end of the day to have the album and more so the songs on an album that can touch fans for a decade but has also gained new fans is really cool."In the attached audio listen to Mabbitt go more in-depth on This War is Ours and if he thinks the messages pointed out on that album have resonated over the last decade, the troubles he went through as the new vocalist on that album plus the way he dealt with criticism, as well as the correlations between that album and their latest, I Am Human.May 28 - Amplifier Bar, PerthMay 29 - Fowlers Bar, AdelaideMay 30 - Corner Hotel, RichmondMay 31 - Max Watts, MelbourneJune 1 - Manning Bar, CamperdownJune 2 - Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle WestJune 3 - The Triffid, NewsteadKris Peters1AQ

From the Cambridge Hotel to the Corner Hotel, Leroy Macqueen and Kat Friend - better known as The Gooch Palms - have laid waste to stage after stage with their stupidly-simple and seriously sensational take on garage rock. They have just completed a national tour in support of Violent Soho, playing some of their biggest shows to date; and this week saw them release their second studio album, Introverted Extroverts. But how did these two Novocastrian weirdos make it onto a national stage with little more than a floor tom, a snare drum and a guitar? The Goochies held court over Thai lunch in Redfern while in town for the final shows on the Soho tour, sharing their story so far - as well as tales of nudity, town pride and Andre 3000. The Gooch Palms' new album, Introverted Extroverts, is out now via Summer Camp Records. Aaron Golledge from House of Rock Maitland met us at the Cambridge Hotel this week to talk about the band Nirvana and the launch of the House of Rock venue in Maitland. We talked about how Aaron discovered Nirvana (the band that is!), the joys of Nevermind, his favourite Nirvana song and various other bands he was interested in at the same time. The inaugural gig at House of Rock Maitland featuring Hyena Smiles and Just Ace is on the 24th of July. See you there! Follow us on Twitter: @splittingcases and FB: facebook.com/splittingcases.
On the 10th of July we went to the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle to see Stonefield and Dan Sultan play. Hear us chat before the show about seagulls, the pronunciation of prelude, the lost Splitting Cases episode, our new spin off podcasts and what gigs we got to in the first half of 2014. We also had a quick chat about the show itself after both Stonefield and Dan Sultan played.www.facebook.com/splittingcaseswww.twitter.com/splittingcases
It's harvest time. The frost is on the pumpkin. JHK visits the Farmers Market in Cambridge, NY, and chats with the farmers (and sundry other interesting people) about the ag scene in Washington County and the fate of small town America. By the way, the magnificent old Cambridge Hotel right next to the Farmer's Market is for sale, if any listeners want to run a place of lodging in a lovely corner of the country. Restaurant and bar included. The KunstlerCast music is “Adam and Ali’s Waltz” from the recording Waiting to Fly by Mike and Ali Vass.
