I thought I was going to chat with Donna about her art therapy work with kids. But from the moment we jumped on the phone, I realised there was a lot more to this story. It has a lot to do with her kids. Her son is literally a rocket scientist, one daughter is the mutli-ARIA-nominated musician Jack River, and the other daughter, Shannon, is the reason Donna now runs one of the most impactful art programs I've ever heard of. We barely scratch the surface here, but the insight, strength, and soul she brings is something I'll never forget. This one is a crazy-beautiful mix of space, music, grief, healing, and hope. Thank you Donna ❤️Thanks as always to our Patreon legends for keeping this van rolling down the road. All the links:

Welcome to a new episode of RISE with Hanna Olivas. Today, our special guest is: Holly Isabella Rankin, who performs as Jack River, is an Australian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Her previous album, Sugar Mountain launched her onto playlists and festival bills with enviable velocity. Beat Magazine called it “one of the greatest Australian albums of the past decade” with the single ‘Fool's Gold' reaching the heights of ARIA Platinum status. Endless Summer, the sophomore album is out now, ten perfect pop songs that shimmer like melting highways and drip like strawberry ice-cream. This record is an oasis, something to retreat to amid the apocalyptic horrors of the war and climate disaster in the modern world. That's the paradox of Endless Summer; The oasis is a mirage, only as real as you desire. https://fenixtv.app/ https://www.sherisesstudios.com/ Join us in Miami this September for our Women's Empowerment Summit!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Corby over Zoom video!Matt Corby recently released his new album Everything's Fine, via Communion. His first album in five years, Everything's Fine vividly captures the personal and creative growth of Matt Corby who, like many, was tipped belly side up recently. Beyond the global touring pause, on the day he was meant to start recording his new album, Corby and his family were instead rescued by a neighbor. Their home had been engulfed by the flood waters that raged through Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, in early 2022. After nervously watching his heavily pregnant partner and young son be whisked away in a small inflatable dinghy, he got to work ferrying provisions to stranded locals and digging rotting mud out from beneath his home. With their home inundated by floodwaters, the whole family moved into Corby's Rainbow Valley Studios during the album's recording process. Juggling familial responsibilities with his creative pursuits was a one-of-a-kind pressure cooker circumstance that galvanized his artistic evolution.Firmly fixed on seeing the best of things, Matt reveals “I'm at a really beautiful point in my life. I'm accepting all this stuff: the good and the bad, but particularly the bad. Which is kind of great. It's a good thing to come to that point. Life isn't always magical, but the moments that are, well you really value them. I think this record is about that, about managing your actual reality. Sometimes I have those moments when you realize: well I'm still breathing, you still have the gift of life, so everything is fine I guess?”About Matt Corby:Recorded at his Rainbow Valley Studios with Chris Collins (Gang of Youths, Middle Kids, Skegss), Matt Corby's third studio album Everything's Fine picks up where his 2020 stand-alone singles, “If I Never Say A Word” and “Vitamin” left off after his J Award-winning 2018 LP Rainbow Valley. In the time since, Matt announced the launch of his own independent record label, in between loaning his production expertise to work by Genesis Owusu, Jack River, Great Gable, Bud Rokesky and most recently, his award-winning collaboration with Budjerah. We want to hear from you! At the end of July, Jack River dropped an open letter calling for more Aussie music airplay at the Olympics. A slew of Aussie artists have backed calls by Jack River for Channel 7 to play Australian music during the network's coverage of the Olympics, as the country's artists continue to endure yet another wave of gig cancellations and postponements due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, restrictions and border closures. “How great would it be if you played all Australian music in your coverage of the Olympics? These are Australian moments, they deserve Australian music,” said Jack River. “And while we're here, how good would it be to hear Aussie music in Coles, Woolies, Aldi, in banks, on hold, in stores and on ads being shown to Australian for the next few months?” she added. “We need you more than ever. We wanna be your soundtrack.” River's call was met with support from artists like Lime Cordiale, Annie Hamilton, B Wise, Vera Blue, Cub Sport and Jaguar Jonze, who wrote, “HELL YES. Our domestic music quota is so low compared to other countries supporting their own artists.” Unveiled Thursday (Aug. 5), Our Soundtrack Our Stories is a cross-industry project which calls on corporations, media and “anyone willing to listen” to soundtrack Australian lives with homegrown music. The indie artist and entrepreneur's words didn't fall on deaf ears. Channel 7, Channel 9, Coles, 7-Eleven and Bank Australia listened and have taken action. Last week, River launched the Our Soundtrack Our Stories campaign, which invites the wider business community and beyond to discover, champion, share, and consume more local music, which, in short time, will generate essential streaming and sales royalties for struggling artists. The gameplan is a simple one. Play more Australian music, more of the time. A factsheet shared by the pool of partners recommends business owners play local music in their stores and business (and, of course, obtain the right license by visiting OneMusic), spin a radio station that champions local artists, and share the campaign social assets. To join the movement, artists are encouraged to work their social accounts, push the assets, tag businesses that should do more (and give a shout-out to the supporters), create and share themed playlists, and get creative. The industry's hardship is brought into sharp focus in a new report from I Lost My Gig, which found artists and professionals had lost $64 million in revenue lost since July 1, with almost the entire sum uninsurable. The real figure is likely significantly higher. To play a part in Our Soundtrack Our Stories, use the hashtag #OurSoundtrackOurStories on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. The work that Briggs has been able to achieve in lockdown is nothing short of amazing, from releasing satirical lockdown music videos with Tim Minchin about the Australian government’s bushfire response to publishing a childrens’ book that quickly became Australia’s number one seller. But it’s business as usual for Briggs, who is constantly working and creating, writing comedy scripts, hosting global radio shows, acting or giving platforms and support systems to younger artists. In true lockdown style, this conversation took place over Zoom between Jack River's home and Briggs in his car in Shepparton. To connect head to @torebelinthetimes on Instagram. Alaskan psych pop band Portugal. The Man have an impressive history of using their music to 'pass the mic' and encourage impact wherever they go. Cub Sport have been global leaders in a shift in pop music culture, one that sees Artists publicly embracing their sexuality, and expressing it in bright colours for all of us to experience. Jack River caught up with Cub Sport’s Tim Nelson during isolation just a few months after Tim publicly freed himself of the gender binary, an act that he described as not “about finding a new label that makes him feel comfortable” but “about removing labels” and becoming “free to form his own self not built by others.” To connect head to @torebelinthetimes on Instagram.
