Household Express: Guest Nasreen Ali - from Lab Coats to Lemon Loaf A Bakers double Life by Radio Islam
The price of butter's shot up 65% over the past year - you might have noticed nana's cookie jar's a bit empty lately. Bakers are buying in bulk from the Aussies, where it's cheaper. Online discussion blames our dairy farmers, the co-op that buys their milk, and the producers who sell it. But, there are a couple of reason its cheaper there than here. 1) We export a hell of a lot more to the world than the Aussies do. In 2023, they exported 9.4 tonnes. We exported 441 tonnes. They exported 2% of the quantity we did. That means our price is more susceptible to the international market price. We export most of our butter, we pay the international price. Australia on the other hand, eats a lot more of its own and exports less. This is good and bad. It mean we pay the trade price, yes, but it also means when the price is high, as it has been lately, our largest company Fonterra does well. Our farmers do well. They spend money here and drive growth in our economy which we all benefit from. Yesterday we learned that means an extra $15-billion being ploughed into this economy. 2) Supply issues in Europe have pushed that global price up. Our is a premium product which is in high demand overseas. It's grass fed, more sustainable, and just tastes better. The exchange rate has also encouraged large purchases from offshore buyers. 3) When you produce a lot of something, producers will lock themselves into big international contacts because they buy greater volumes than local retailers need. The Aussies have this problem with their gas. Australian National University business and economics lecturer David Leaney explains that they signed some big money contracts to supply a enormous amount of gas at locked-in prices. He says even though they could sell it for more domestically, they're locked into those contracts. 4) We don't know the details of the Costco cheap butter that everyone's been raving about. Is it a loss leader? Is it a marketing ploy? Discount it to get people into your store to then simultaneously buy 48 rolls of toilet paper? So yes, Kiwi butter is expensive at home. But the fact it's expensive elsewhere is actually a good thing for our country as a whole. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews Jay Patey, founder of Pigeon Whole Bakers, who shares his journey from launching a small Hobart café in 2008 to building an $8M bakery with over 50 staff. Jay dives into the power of word-of-mouth marketing, the decision to expand into wholesale, and creating a beloved Tasmanian brand that now supplies major outlets like MONA and Hill Street stores. He opens up about the challenges of fast growth, how shifting to daylight production transformed team wellbeing, and why a people-first culture is key to long-term success. Jay also reflects on lessons learned from nearly two decades in business and offers valuable advice for other small business owners. It's a raw, honest, and inspiring story of resilience, purpose, and sustainable growth. Other Resources: The Ultimate Recruitment Toolkit Online Short Course Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Jay Patey, the hardest thing in growing a small business is dealing with the unknown and the lack of control over unexpected challenges. Despite careful planning, unforeseen issues can arise that test resilience and patience. He highlights that growth is a long-term journey requiring adaptability and the ability to navigate uncertainty. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Jay Patey mentioned that the business book which helped him the most was "2 Second Lean" by Paul Akers. He appreciated its focus on improving workflow efficiency, organization, and lean manufacturing principles—particularly relevant as he set up their new bakery production space to be streamlined and future-proofed. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Jay Patey specifically recommended the Grow A Small Business Podcast as a valuable resource. He mentioned that he listens to it religiously and finds it insightful for learning from other business owners' growth journeys and challenges. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Jay Patey recommends using subscription-based software tools to grow a small business, particularly those that streamline operations. He highlights tools like Xero for accounting, a robust time and attendance system integrated with payroll, and Square for point of sale (POS), which also connects with their website. These tools have helped improve efficiency and reduce administrative overhead What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Jay Patey would advise himself on day one to “strap in for the ride” and recognize that he had no real idea of what lay ahead. He reflects that he was quite naïve at the start and never imagined the business would grow as much as it has, emphasizing the importance of being mentally prepared for a long, challenging, and evolving journey. Remember way back in April of 2022 when we launched Episode 40: Write Your Own Booker's Story? Well its time for part II! If you're not familiar with Booker's, its a cask strength Bourbon from our friends over at Jim Beam. Each expression is launched quarterly and newer bottles come in a wooden box with a small card with a written story that explains how they named the batch and what barrels make up the blend. Now imagine if you could write your own story for a batch of Booker's - that's exactly what we do on this episode. Grab a pour and get ready for the chaos! Write Your Own Booker's Story is a fan favorite and our favorite too! We had so much fun writing not one, not two, but three Booker's stories as Mike, Devin, and even Katie Mitchell join in on the fun. At the end of the episode we review a reaaaaaallllyyy special Booker's batch that means the world to us. We certainly poke fun of Booker's on the show, but absolutely love the brand and the whiskies in the Jim Beam portfolio. Go get some Booker's Bourbon!Cheers! Support the show

In Denmark, most seasons have a bread or cake associated with them, but no other season's cakes have as much hype around them as those baked to mark the carnival tradition Fastelavn. This year, Copenhageners are taking tastings to the extreme—literally running to the best buns in town. The excitement surrounding its traditional cake, the cream- and jam-filled fastelavnsboller—meaning Fastelavn bun—has only grown in recent years. It's no longer just available on Fastelavn Sunday, but in bakery windows from early January. Bakers across Copenhagen and Denmark's other large cities offer the buns, some creating the most lavish pastries possible. Tipster, a Danish food and beverage company, organized what's claimed to be the world's first "Fastelavn Bun Run." “We were doing a selection of ten bakeries that we really, really like and that are doing ten Fastelavns buns that we really think that everybody should try. By coincidence, we did the route between the different bakeries, and the route was exactly 21.1 km, which is the exact distance of a half marathon,” explains Tipster founder Simon Evers. “It was basically just written in the sky that this has to go into a half marathon." It's a 21.1-kilometer half marathon visiting ten of the city's top bakeries and sampling a fastelavnsboller at each. In just one day, 3,723 people signed up, although only 100 lucky applicants were allowed to take part. Evers says almost 8,000 people applied in all. The half marathon starts at Flere Fugle, a bakery in Copenhagen's Northwest district. "This is the best chance that you can get visiting some of the best bakeries in the world and running with 100 people who are just super psyched about it,” he smiles. “We taste everything from like an old school fastelavns bun to a semlor, which is basically what they do in Sweden. And then we have a lot of modern interpretations of the fastelavns bun as well." This article was provided by The Associated Press.

"Bakers can commit their entire lives to learning the craft of bread and still find new nuances of flavor and texture every time they bake. This simultaneous simplicity and complexity is, in many ways, much like the life of faith."-Kendall Vanderslice This episode delves into the powerful connections between mothering, baking, and spirituality, offering the invitation to explore how the kitchen can become a sacred space. Janell welcomes Kendall Vanderslice, author of Bake and Pray: Liturgies and Recipes for Baking Bread as a Spiritual Practice, to discuss the essential practices of nurturing ourselves and our relationships through baking and prayer. Vanderslice emphasizes the importance of taking time to slow down and engage with the process and urges the rediscovery of rest and community. We live in a day and age where stress, fear, worry, and anxiety are running rampant in our culture and society. However, these factors are not a part of the abundant life and plan in which God destines for you to experience. However, II Corinthians 10:5 reminds us of a strategy to overcome the negative, maladaptive thoughts in our lives by stating, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Joining us today to provide additional guidance and wisdom from this passage is a renowned speaker, author, and Bible teacher, Margaret Feinberg. Host of the popular podcast, The Joycast, Margaret Feinberg is a popular Bible teacher and speaker at churches and leading conferences such as Extraordinary Women, Thrive and Women of Joy. She is also the creator of best-selling coloring and creative books for grown ups. Her other books, including Scouting the Divine, Fight Back With Joy, Taste and See: Discovering God Among Butchers, Bakers and Fresh Food Makers, and their corresponding Bible studies, have sold over one million copies and received critical acclaim and extensive national media coverage from CNN, the Associated Press, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and more. She was recently named one of 50 women most shaping culture and the church today by Christianity Today. Margaret lives in Utah with her husband, Leif, and their superpup, Zoom. She believes some of the best days are spent around a table with amazing food and friends. Our prayer is that you would be educated, encouraged, and equipped with practical tips and strategies to take every thought captive in your life as well no matter the season you may find yourself in. On this episode of "The Federalist Radio Hour," Stephanie Baker, senior writer at Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Businessweek, joins The Federalist's Senior Elections Correspondent Matt Kittle to discuss the current status of the Ukraine-Russia war with a specific focus on whether sanctions levied on Russia have worked. While Russia is trying to position itself "stronger than it is," according to Baker, the nation is vulnerable to a financial crisis due to its increased wartime spending and the burden of sanctions. You can find Bakers' book, Punishing Putin: Inside The Global Economic War To Bring Down Russia, here. If you care about combatting the corrupt media that continue to inflict devastating damage, please give a gift to help The Federalist do the real journalism America needs.
Bible Reading: Romans 14:1-13, 19-23The sound of the lawn mower next door cut through the quiet of a lazy Sunday afternoon as Daphne and her mother worked on a fresh flower arrangement. "I'm glad the Bakers moved in next door," said Mom. "It's nice having Christian neighbors, isn't it?" Daphne handed Mom two red roses, being careful not to prick herself on the thorns. "Yeah, but--" She hesitated. "I know they go to church, but they mow the lawn almost every Sunday. Dad always says we have to get it done on Saturday so we don't have to work on Sunday. He says we should keep the Lord's Day holy." She frowned. "Maybe the Bakers aren't really Christians at all."Mom added the roses to the bouquet. "Let's think about that. What makes someone a Christian?""Trusting Jesus as their Savior," said Daphne. "But--" She paused."When the Bakers came to church with us, they told us the story of how they each came to know Jesus as their Savior, remember?" said Mom.Daphne trimmed the stem of another flower. "Well, yeah…""Dad and I believe that the things we do on Sunday are what's right for our family, and there may be other things that we do but the Bakers wouldn't." Mom held up the bouquet. "Each flower is different. This yellow one is such a pretty color. This pink one next to it isn't quite as bright, but it makes the whole bouquet smell good." Mom took out a rose. "Then there's the rose. It has thorns, but that doesn't mean we throw it out. It's actually my favorite--it's so beautiful and fragrant!" She replaced the rose. "These flowers each bring something unique to the bouquet, and the same goes for believers who belong to Jesus. We may not agree on everything, but we still recognize that anyone who loves Jesus and trusts in Him is a Christian."Daphne nodded slowly. "I guess the Bible doesn't say exactly what we should or shouldn't do on Sunday, does it?""No," said Mom. "When it comes to topics that the Bible is unclear about, we need to trust that the Holy Spirit is working uniquely in everybody. But one thing the Bible is very clear about is not judging Christians who do things differently than we do. We need to love them and let God be the judge." –A.J. SchutHow About You?Do you know Christians who do things differently from how you do them? While the Bible says certain things are definitely right or wrong, there aren't clear guidelines on everything. The Holy Spirit gives wisdom in each situation, and your family and church community can help you make decisions in these areas too. Trust God to help you make wise decisions and show grace and love to all believers.Today's Key Verse:Why do you judge your brother or sister?...For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. (NIV) (Romans 14:10)Today's Key Thought:Don't judge other Christians
