Brisbane indie punk outfit Semantics have splashed their name across the national music scene in the space of seven short years, traversing the country with acts such as Luca Brasi, Violent Soho, Sly Withers and The Menzingers while managing to drop their debut LP Paint Me Blue in the midst of it all, garnering a loyal and passionate global fanbase to boot.To prove they are no flash in the pan, Semantics recently unleashed their sophomore album I Feel It All At Once, producing their most cohesive and definitive work to date. Across its eleven tracks, I Feel It All At Once encapsulates a broad emotional spectrum; snapshots of life's experiences, journeying themes of grief, love, yearning and ultimately, acceptance. Semantics are a band who have proven in the past that they are unafraid to explore darker themes and subject matter, but even then, they displayed a talent for doing it in a way that felt healthy and cathartic.Vocalist/guitarist Callum joined HEAVY to go more in depth."I'm so excited," he enthused a couple of days out from the album's September 27 release date. "We've been sitting on these songs for a few months now and waiting to put them out and see what everyone thinks. (Musically) we were aiming to encapsulate everything we love about rock and guitar music. We wanted to pay tribute to all of their styles and artists that have influenced us and play from the heart and make songs that we believe in. Write about content and subject matter that is important to us or relevant to our lives, but is also - we hope - translatable and accessible to everyone else."In the full interview, Callum explained how the album represents a new chapter for the band, with a greater focus on production and songwriting effort, and is a tribute to the styles and artists that have influenced them. We discussed Semantics' upcoming album tour, which will start on the Gold Coast on October 13 and end in Brisbane on November 6, with Callum describing their live shows as loud and energetic, with a positive atmosphere. We also spoke about the album title and how it differs to their first release, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Also: rubbing off, less than rapt with Spotify Wrapped, Doc's 30 Albums Worth A Second Listen list, premature recommendation, review filibustering, not a vegan but well off-chops, every album is a genre piece, eating too much cake mix, abstract and illegible, 1992 amounts of slap bass, it's been a long year, only three listening weeks till Christmas, TISM as a service, #DocReadsBios, Gen X sellouts, yet again we massively fail to predict the sound of an album we haven't listened to, diversity picks, shouts to Violent Soho and/or Violet Coco, and the least interesting grime act. APATE Set To Explode At GOOD THINGS FESTIVAL This Weekend

Good Things Festival not only brings Australian music fans a feast of international talent for their annual December listening pleasure, but they also showcase the best in established and rising local talent as well. Not just with the bands named on the initial bill but also by way of a unique and unexpected finale to the line-up that involved local bands in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane facing off for one last spot in each city.It is a bittersweet situation. On the one hand, it pits mates against each other in a show of public popularity that reflects on the groundwork put in by bands on all levels, but on the other, it is a concept that has to be taken seriously by participating bands with such a prestigious and potentially career starting prize up for grabs.Brisbane winners Apate deservedly take their place on stage just after midday this Sunday, December 4, after emerging triumphant in last week's final. Now, with the competition stage of the journey now behind them, the Brisbane metal outfit can focus on the big stage, with vocalist Zakk Ludwig and guitarist Caleb Patch joining HEAVY to talk about their path to Good Things. We start by asking if they feel they are ready to rise to the challenge of mixing it with the big boys."We're ready brother, trust me," Ludwig said confidently. "We've been looking forward to it for a long time, so we're ready. We're hungry to play. We wanna play, so…""We're used to playing a lot of small rooms and stuff," Patch took over, "but I think our set has the energy to hopefully take a couple of people that haven't seen us and make them think 'oh, I'd love to come see that again'."Although the whole experience will be unlike anything some bands never get a chance to experience, even smaller things like stage sizing has to come into consideration. Bands at the local level are generally used to playing on smaller, indoor stages, so the shift to a massive outdoor expanse is something that can't be overlooked."We actually have experienced something similar to this before," Patch offered. "We won the chance to play a festival when we were first starting out as a band - it was called the Live It Up Festival - and Apate got the chance to open up the festival and In Hearts Wake played and Parkway Drive played. Violent Soho were there… it was a pretty cool experience. That was when we were really young, and we ended up playing to… 3000 kids showed up super early to watch us play which was mental. We did well then, and I think we've been touring quite heavily the last few years as a band with several months playing back to back shows, so I think we're definitely ready. We all play off each other quite well in that sense."In the full interview, the boys talk more about the heats in the lead-up to last week's final, the feeling amongst the other bands, who they are looking forward to sharing the stage with, tailoring set lists to suit crowds, Good Things' focus on Australian music, the deluxe release of their recent album RAGE, heading back into the studio, next year's tour with Dregg and more.

THORNHILL To Play At UNIFY 2022

Out of a year of live music misery, one shining beacon of hope was the recent announcement that UNIFY is planning on holding their annual concert next year from January 20 to 23 at Tarwin Lower, South Gippsland. The all – Australian lineup is already impressive after just the first announcement, with The Amity Affliction and Violent Soho leading the charge along with a host of other Aussie heavyweights including Alpha Wolf, Ocean Grove, Plini, RedHook and Thornhill.Thornhill vocalist Jacob Charlton joined HEAVY to chat about UNIFY 2022."It's gonna be really fun to go back,” he enthused, “because we were in Europe the last time it was on, we didn't get to go and see it."Run over three days, the festival is massive in scale not just for the punters, but also the bands who will no doubt be reacquainting themselves with long time friends they have not seen in over 12 months because of lockdowns."That's the whole thing,” Charlton smiled. “I don't know what day we have, is that even announced? I'm really hoping it's not the Saturday (laughs). If we play Friday I can just chill out and see everyone on the Friday and be like hi, I'm not drinking, I'm playing a show today. Playing, hopefully kill it, and then ruin myself for the next two days. BUT, I don't think it's going to be the case because I have a feeling I'm not gonna have it the way I want it and I'm gonna have to be a big Normie for the first two days."In the full interview, Jacob talks us more through UNIFY 2022, who he is most looking forward to seeing, the threat of COVID and how he prepares for a festival that may be threatened, what Thornhill have been doing in lockdown, new music and what direction it may take and more.

LOSER: the anxiety that fuels All The Rage

In 2018, a new Melbourne band arrived featuring ex-members of The Smith Street Band, The Bennies and Apart From This. With the self-deprecating name of LOSER, they hit the ground running with their debut single immediately added to triple j.  Signed to Domestic La La, the label of Violent Soho's James Tidswell, a debut album from LOSER at the start of 2020 signalled a busy year ahead. Those plans soon disappeared, and in lockdown for much of the year, singer Tim Maxwell started to experience severe anxiety. With medication and some family help, the band ended up channelling their frustrations into building their own studio and writing a second album.  All The Rage is the result, a consistent rock record that feeds off the riffs of Queens Of The Stone Age, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins and other seminal ‘90s and early noughties acts. Tim speaks here with Richard Kingsmill about what he went through last year, how he and his brother Will returned to their original family home to build the studio, and how aliens inspired one of the album's best moments.

Moses Sumney – grae 34. No Pressure – No Pressure EP  33. Crack Cloud – Pain Olympics 32. PUP – This Place Suck Ass EP  31. Stand Atlantic – Pink Elephant 30. Sorry – 925 29. Boston Manor – GLUE 28. This week I chat to Luke Henery, absolute legend, incredible photographer and bassist for the Brisbane based Alt Rock/Punk band Violent Soho. Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/miztrujillo)I stumbled across Violent Soho years ago whilst trying to find the UK Punk band 'WACO' on Spotify and finding Violent Soho's album of the same name. I was an instant fan of their hard hitting songs which somehow reminded me of a Punk Rock Buck Roger era Feeder; mixed in with 90's grunge and feel good anthemic singalongs. I've followed the bands output for the last few years and have been rewarded with banger after banger, this includes their 2020 release 'Everything is A-OK', which is HUGE and deserves to be heard in live venues as soon as Covid allows. Along the way I also become a bug fan of Luke's photography, so as you can imagine we had a lot to talk about. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.
