"There are many things inside our home that people can focus on before you even get the solar." Before homeowners rush to get the solar panels installed on your roof, it is recommended that the "envelope" of your home be inspected to make sure the energy is not being wasted. Carl Reese, a general contractor and building inspector with many qualifications, discusses what energy audit also known as "home performance evaluation" recently and why homeowners and home buyers should have one, and what measures you can take to improve the energy efficiency of your home and reduce the utility bills as well as the indoor air quality. Carl suggests the first thing the homeowners can do is to change the light bulbs to LED, which would reduce the energy bill by up to one quarter. If the home tends to be dusty and/or you sneeze a lot in the house, that's a sign of air leaking into the living area from the attic and that the duct works should be looked at by HVAC professionals. Improving the insulation and sealing air leaks, which can be done relatively easily and inexpensive, alone would have more immediate return of investment.
In Part II of our series encouraging people to leave town and go touring on our motorcycle, we invited the best long distance tourer in America. 1000 mile days are likely not your goal. A 250 mile day can be perfect with a little planning. Jim Owen just completed the 2017 Iron Butt Rally with his second win. This is an amazing acomplishment. anyone who has ever had a 1,000 mile day knows what a challenge it can be. When you are required to string 11 days of 1,000 per day together to win the IBR it requires drastic measures that are each very well planned. Jim takes a systematic approach to the Iron Butt. We take his systematic approach and break it down to help us all learn how to truly enjoy motorcycle touring solo or two up. The information from last weeks show in Part I with Carl Reese, Deana Mastracci and Norm Nelson combined with the valuable information we get from Jim Owen may produced the most comprehensive guide to fun touring ever. World record holder and long distance motorcycle rider Carl Reese calls in from a corn field in Nebraska while on tour with Deena Mastracci! He gives us special insight about how he prepares for long distance touring and what he does when he is on the road. Where to stay? How many miles per day is enough? What special preperation does he do? Deena Mastracci joins the conversation as a relatively new rider. She won an award in 2016 for the highest mileage acheived by a new rider in their first year! Deena is a nutricianalist and shares special insight about what she eats and drinks during a long day in the saddle. She also tells us what her gear choices are for extreme hot weather touring. There is much to learn from this conversation. Norm Nelson has ridden from the Southeast to Alaska twice on a 1958 Harley Sportster 25 years apart! He is the highest finisher in the Motorcycle Cannonball over the last three events. Riding a 1911 Reading Standard in 2016 he goes deep inside his planning and packing as well as the mental preperation side of touring. Norm has also ridden a 2009 Piaggio BV250 scooter over 80,000 miles and many of those miles are on the Interstate!
This week on our motorcycle podcast, we manage to have survived the storms without washing away, unlike many of our roads. But that doesn't stop people from coming out and spending a day wrenching and riding. And that includes a visit from baby Freya, who made her visit to the garage at just 3 days old. We hear from our guests, Paolo, Erik and Frank from the Handsome Asians Motorcycle Club. They have made some great motorcycle movies and shorts, as well as their web series of the same name. I would describe their show as equal parts motorcycle maintenance, guest interviews and scripted comedy with a sprinkle of Pee Wee's Playhouse and Spinal Tap. We also have a call from Carl Reese, who has an announcement about a new world record he is setting out to beat. Listen and enjoy. In this episode we go inside the mind of long distance endurance rider/driver Carl Reese. We learn why he does what he does and how he does what he does. Anyone who participates in an Iron Butt or simply loves long distance motorcycling will enjoy our conversation with Carl. What does he eat? How do you ride over3,000 in 39 hours? All this and more in this edition of Talking Motorcycles. In this exclusive interview Carl will publicly announce what his next project is to be. He has called it #project9 and for the first time in public media we get the idea behind this project. Carl Reese will attempt to break the all time closed course distance record in 24 hours on a motorcycle. Glenn Stasky joins Carl on the show to discuss how they are planning to equip the BMW K1600GT with 30,000 lumen of light using Clearwater Lights! The 8.5 mile banked oval will serve as the place for the world record attempt. Thank you for listening to Talking Motorcycles with Barry Boone! Anyone who rides a motorcycle probably knows what it’s like to find any excuse or reason to ride. Some commute to work, some run all their errands using their bike… out of milk? No problem. Even though it’s easier to jump in your car, you’ll put on all your gear just to ride your bike around the corner. Whether it’s a day trip, a weekend jaunt, or perhaps an even longer adventure, it’s always in the back of a motorcyclists mind just what reason or excuse can they find to ride. Last week we talked about making a resolution to do an adventure this year, and this week we are giving you some good reasons and excuses to justify it. 1. Stuck, Bored & Sick of Work Lois Pryce: http://www.loisontheloose.com/ Tired of the cubicle job at BBC, in 2003 at 29 years old, Lois quit her job and set out on a solo adventure, riding from Alaska to Ushuaia. Scotty Kerekes has been living on the road for twenty-one years. What started out as a soul searching experience turned in to a lifestyle for him. After being on the road for a year, Scotty realized that there was no turning back. He ended up selling everything he owned except for what fit on his bike, and hit the road… for good. Win a Contest Pete Johnson: All Roads Lead to Manchester In this episode, Jim talks to Pete about his theme trip that was realized when he won a ‘Biker Dream’ contest in 2011. Carl Reese is an American endurance driver who has set more transcontinental driving records than anyone else since Erwin “Cannonball” Baker. Carl and this team set six world records in 2015 over a seven month period with the most notable being a solo motorcycle “cannonball” traveling from Los Angeles to New York. Carl did that run in 38 hours and 49 minutes. He holds the Guinness World Record for the shortest charging time to cross the U.S.A. in an electric vehicle among his many records. One of the wonderful things Carl does is to partner with the Motorcycle Relief Project where he helps our military veterans suffering from PTSD and other injuries to heal and recover.
Carl Reese - Endurance Rider & Record Setter You’ve probably heard of the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run. In 1933 Erwin George “Cannon Ball” Baker drove from New York City to Los Angeles in a Graham-Paige model 57 Blue Streak 8 in 53.5 hours. No one broke that record for 40 years. Car and Driver writer Brock Yates and editor Steve Smith organized the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, which took place 5 times between 1971 and 1979. It was an illegal road race from coast to coast to celebrate the United States Interstate Highway System and to protest strict traffic laws which were coming in to effect at that time. The first run was not a competitive race, as there was only one team running in a 1971 Dodge Custom Sportsman van. But by the time they were running the last race it was known as a wild race. They ran everything from Ferraris to pick-up trucks. It was mostly a secret event, with few witnesses. As more and more people have tried to rush to break Cannonball Baker’s time, the route has become established and is commonly referred to as the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run. Carl Reese is a contractor from California, and in his spare time he’s an endurance rider that has set seven world records in less than a year. One being the solo motorcycle “Cannonball” from Los Angeles to New York. Carl Reese set out to break the motorcycle record previously set by George Egloff in 1983, who completed the cross country run in 42 hours. Carl Reese talks about his ride from L.A. to New York to beat the world record for the fastest coast to coast trip for a solo motorcyclist.
This week on our motorcycle podcast we have special guest Carl Reese. He is the nutjob who recently broke the record for riding his bike from LA to NY in under 39 hours. Turns out the guy isn't so wackadoo after all, and lots of planning and prep went into this feat of endurance. We also find out who's sold a bike, whos bought a bike, and who is putting a new engine in. And of course Liza has to go into another Craigslist rant. We also read an email from Sheila in Texas which starts a conversation about tools. With Liza, Zach, Bagel, Adrian, Douglas, Kat, Jim, Patrick, Froot Loop and Charley. Special guest Enzo joins us for the intro. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/iron-riders-la-to-nyc-motorcycle-cannonballrecord#/ Call and leave us a message at 831-291-5112 motorcyclesandmisfits.com www.facebook.com/recyclesantacruz recyclesantacruz on youtube recyclemotorcyclegarage@gmail.com
The motivation behind peoples’ actions usually stem from their childhood and upbringing. For Carl Reese, who along with Deena Mastracci, set six transcontinental records in six months.
