Next month's election - early voting actually starts on Monday, October 23 - is what we like to call a "low-turnout/high impact" election. Meaning, since few Texans (unfortunately) are likely to show up, YOUR vote carries a LOT more weight than it would in a higher-turnout situation. Ironically, these quieter elections are frequently the most significant opportunities Texans have to nudge our state in the right direction, and that's certainly the case with the 14 constitutional amendment propositions you'll be faced with at the ballot box. Many are actually a chance to get something GOOD done for Texas for a change - others are deceptively-worded money grabs for billionaires - making a seemingly unimportant election a VERY important one for Texas progressives to show up for. In this episode, we're proud to welcome Becky Bullard, Texas political podcasting pioneer and current Communications Manager for the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club to talk about Prop 7 - the creation of a "Texas Energy Fund" - which might sound like a good idea, but is actually a giant handout to fossil fuel billionaires - vote NO. We also welcome Texas Retired Teachers Association Executive Director Tim Lee and retired veteran educator Cathy Patrick to talk about Prop 9, which would approve the first cost of living increase for our state's retired teachers in over two decades - vote YES. And finally, our friend Luke Metzger, Executive Director of Environment Texas, to talk Prop 14 - the creation of a Centennial Parks Conservation Fund earmarked for the creation and maintenance of state parks - vote YES. Find (and support!) our handy and popular voter guide at https://progresstexas.org/2023-texas-statewide-ballot-guide. T-shirts are one of our wardrobe staples and there are 2 billion sold and bought every year. But I still struggle to buy them to fit me and in this episode I'll share more about that and my 5 reasons why I think you should make your own so stay tuned. Why are t-shirts so hard to buy?Because my hips are a couple of sizes bigger than my bust, when I try to buy t-shirts I often find that if they fit at the shoulders, they are too tight, or at least tighter than I would like around my tummy and hips and if I size up so that they fit comfortably across my hips, then they look a bit tent like at the top.I also like to match my t-shirt to the rest of my outfit, so getting just the right colour can also be a challenge. I think my mum had a skirt in her wardrobe for about a year, trying to find just the right colour t-shirt to go with it so maybe that's a hereditary trait! So before I get into my solution for my t-shirt buying problems (and spoiler alert, that's the 5 great reasons to make one!) I wanted to share some interesting facts that I found out while doing some research for this little chat with you. Welcome back to Catwalk Through Life! In this episode, I share 5 great reasons why you should take up walking regularly. There are so many benefits to walking and it's been proven to help with stress, anxiety, weight loss and other challenges. In 2019, when I had very major surgery I could not walk for quite some time. Even when I started to, I couldn't do it more than tiny baby steps with the help of my husband. It was awful and painful, but it helped me realize how immensely grateful I was to have two legs for walking. Even through the struggle of getting back to normal I realized I had a new-found appreciation for things in life that many (including myself) take for granted - like having the ability to walk or the scent of fresh air. Combine the two and you have a nice walk outside! :) Now go get your catwalk on! I hope you enjoy the quick episode! ***** Catwalk Through Life Blog: https://catwalkthroughlife.com/2020/04/05/5-great-reasons-to-walk/ Catwalk Through Life Instagram Page: https://www.instagram.com/catwalkthroughlife Catwalk Through Life Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/726602181696067 Rashi Stephens-Charlton Instagram Page: https://www.instagram.com/rashistephens *** Disclaimer: Please know that these reasons are just suggestions, my own opinions, and what's worked for me. Reader and writer, bookmaker and encaustic painter Georgia Smith is now also training to be a therapist. She thinks often about the place of creativity in our lives and reflects here on how it is a different process for each of us often involving both internal and external struggles. Some are healed through the making of art/music/dance/etc. Others have to face the struggles that keep them from actively making and that it is in fact art that is worth healing for. Welcome! I'm glad you're joining me today. Complete show notes for today can be found at masterfullibrarian.com/ep-8.Over the last several days, the American Librarian Association held it's annual Midwinter Meeting. The meeting was virtual, of course, but still filled with great speakers, programs, and events. ALA programs and conferences never disappoint. There was so much to learn and see!Being a part of this conference got me to thinking. One of the most effective ways to up your librarian game and have greater impact in your work is to become an active member of your library associations. At a bare minimum, we all should belong to our state and any local library associations or consortia. Our state associations often do the most specific work to help out libraries. If at all possible, join the American Library Association and the divisions relevant to your work. For instance, if you're a school librarian you should definitely join the American Association of School Librarians or AASL, which is the school division of ALA. If you're in a public library, join the Public Library Association, and if you're an academic, the Association of College and Research Libraries. There are many other professional groups you could consider as well. I'll put a list with links in the show notes. If there's one thing I know for sure it's that, as librarians, we are definitely better together. I'm always amazed at how many librarians don't take advantage of that. Today, I'm going to give you three good reasons for joining library associations.EducationIf it's one thing library associations and consortia do well and do often, it's education. Whether it's in-person workshops or online conferences and webinars, there are always opportunities for learning. Although some of the highest quality events are not free and may even have a substantial fee, many others are free or extremely low cost. Here's where it's especially smart to be a member. Many associations allow attendance at events by non-members, but that will almost always cost substantially more. I've noticed that during the pandemic, there's an opportunity for learning with some association or division almost every week. Some weeks, there's something almost every day! I think this is especially important for people serving in libraries who don't have an MLS or who have never taken any coursework. There's so much to know about library work. If you don't have the professional educational background, please take advantage of association offerings.Even if you do have an MLS or coursework, things are always changing and we all need to keep up. If you want to deliver the highest quality service to you library community and have the greatest impact, you must keep your knowledge base current and your toolkit strong. In my experience, the saddest, most ineffective libraries are the ones where no one on staff has received any type of library education or where continuing education and professional development don't happen because no one cares. For two more reaons and complete show notes, join me at masterfullibrarian.com/ep-8.

God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. —1 John 1:5 Light has been a consistent motive found in Christmas celebrations throughout history. From the legend of St. Lucy's candle headdress which enlivens the winter solstice in Scandinavia, to the “star singer” processions of central Europe where children re-enact the visit of the Magi while singing hymns, these images remind us that Christ came into the world as “the true light” (John 1:9) and “a light for revelation to the gentiles” (Luke 2:32). On this Epiphany Sunday (the last of the traditional twelve days of Christmas), many of our hymns reflect these themes as well. The “sages” in Angels From The Realms Of Glory are the “wise men from the east” of Matthew 2:1-12, who follow the “natal star” to “brighter visions” of the “desire of nations.” Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise describes God as the “Father of Light,” while Psalm 50 declares that He shows His glory “in brightness that excels.” The communion hymn The King Shall Come describes both Jesus' first and second comings as days when “light triumphant breaks.” Even our sermon text from Psalm 29 (which we will sing later in the service) refers to the voice of the Lord “flash[ing] forth flames of fire.” As we leave worship this morning, let's take as our prayer the words of As With Gladness Men Of Old: just as the wise men hailed the guiding light of the star to Bethlehem, “so, most gracious Lord, may we ever more be led to Thee.” —Henry C. Haffner Key Words: Lord, Voice, Glory, Strength, Bless, Holiness, Ascribe, Enthroned Keystone Verse: Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. (Psalm 29:2) Psalm 29:1-11 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. 3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in His temple all cry, “Glory!” 10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. 11 May the Lord give strength to His people! May the Lord bless His people with peace!
Witchcraft has a long history of truth hidden within the legends, stories, and fears of our ancestors, but what happens when people seek the path as shelter from emotional battering, or flock to it for the promise of powers that movies and TV promote. This is the third and final episode in a series talking about the not-so-great reasons to explore Witchcraft. On Witchcraft Deconstructed.
Many come to the path seeking empowerment of the self, and a betterment of life, yet others come looking for power, control, or to exploit a perceived openness of sexuality. How do our actions conspire for or against us, and what are the moral guidelines to help us navigate or craft? This is the second of three episodes we will spend talking about the not-so-great reasons to explore Witchcraft. On Witchcraft Deconstructed.
