We conclude our coverage of the 2025 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show with a visit to Pete Johnson of Tatuaje Cigars. As always, Johnson took this opportunity to unveil most of his upcoming releases for the year. This year, the Coalition team had a mantra of #lesswrapperbinderfiller, which resonated throughout many of our interviews, including this one. While we do touch on some of the new products, Pete shares a wealth of insights, particularly regarding the industry and the Trade Show itself. To wrap things up, Bear Duplisea presented Pete with the El Oso Fumar Takes #1 Cigar of the Year award. We hope you enjoy this packed “22 Minutes with Pete Johnson.” Full PCA Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-wU4

Can Kiswahili online content be moderated? It appears that 2025 will see a significant shift in content moderation practices, as Meta plans to eliminate independent fact-checkers on Facebook and Instagram. This change may suggest a decline in standards, particularly in regions that have historically experienced limited online moderation. In many parts of Africa, small content teams have been tasked with overseeing entire countries or regions. Interestingly, while there are numerous content moderators in Africa, they are primarily employed as outsourced workers to assist with content moderation for major platforms based in the United States. These jobs are often mis-advertised too – with no warning about the harmful content moderators will be forced to watch. A report by the Center for Democracy and Technology “Moderating Kiswahili content on Social Media” has looked at why it's so difficult to moderate posts in Kiswahili. The Strettons Podcast The Strettons podcast proudly claims the title of the United Kingdom's inaugural dedicated village podcast. This initiative targets a collection of small villages located in the picturesque rural county of Shropshire, just next to Wales. While it may seem like yet another addition to the podcasting landscape—perhaps one you have already encountered and subscribed to—there is an intriguing technological narrative behind it, as shared by the presenters and producers, Sian Lovegrove and Pete Johnson who are on the show. The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell and the studio expert is Wairimu Gitahi. Coming in at #8 on the 2024 Cigar of the Year Countdown is the Tatuaje 20th Anniversary Reserva RL22. As a part of its 20th-anniversary celebration in 2023, Tatuaje Cigars had several cigar releases to commemorate the occasion. Late in 2023, Tatuaje unveiled a pair of limited edition cigars made at the Garcia family's El Rey de los Habanos factory in Miami. These cigars were the 20th Anniversary Escasos EL22 and the Reserva RL22. Tatuaje's roots are in Miami, so it made sense to do something from the factory that started it all for Pete Johnson. Both blends were rolled in 2021 and had been aging in boxes since 2022 before shipping late in 2023. Full Details: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-uCw

Hydrogen has two big problems: cost and supply. As a low-carbon feedstock, it could decarbonize planes, industry, and power plants. It could even replace the oil in plastics and chemicals. But the leading contenders for low-carbon hydrogen production — like using zero-carbon power for electrolysis and methane pyrolysis — just haven't cut it yet. So far, the price points are too high and the scale of production is too low to spur a hydrogen revolution. But instead of synthesizing hydrogen, what if we pumped naturally-occurring hydrogen reservoirs out of the ground, just like we drill for oil and natural gas? In this episode, Shayle talks about geologic hydrogen with Pete Johnson, CEO of Koloma. Early estimates suggest vast quantities of the gas could be tapped for far cheaper than other production methods. That is, if some major challenges are solved, like finding economically viable reserves, managing leakage, and building infrastructure. In these early days, those are all big ifs. A handful of startups are exploring geologic hydrogen, and Koloma, which has raised $300 million, is the most prominent in the space. (Shayle invests in Koloma and serves on its board. Prelude Ventures, which led Latitude Media's fundraising round, also invests in Koloma.) Shayle and Pete cover topics like: The key factors that lead to reservoirs of geologic hydrogen, like water, iron-rich rock, traps, and seals Why geologic hydrogen could become the cheapest form of hydrogen, if found in large, economically viable reservoirs The greenhouse gas impact of hydrogen, which interferes with the breakdown of methane in the atmosphere Why Pete thinks that economically viable wells will attract new infrastructure, like clean ammonia plants, the way Houston attracted oil infrastructure Stimulating geologic hydrogen production by injecting water into rock What sort of watershed moment would prove the viability of geologic hydrogen Recommended resources Latitude Media: Should we be paying more attention to geologic hydrogen? If sports is the great unifier, Pete Johnson was the minister who married us at Peach County High School during school integration in 1970. An elite athlete, Pete stood out in the small town of Fort Valley, Georgia, during tumultuous times, during his senior year of high school in New York, at Ohio State University, and in the NFL. You will see that Pete still stands out today.
The Tatuaje Cojonu line was born out of the Seleccion de Cazadore (aka Brown Label) line where Tatuaje owner, Pete Johnson, asked master blender, Don Pepin Garcia to make a stronger blend. The name came from Don Pepin saying that the blend had “cojonu”, Cuban slang for “cojones” or “balls”. The name stuck and Pete Johnson decided to release the line in a new vitola every three years. In 2012, Pete Johnson put the line in hiatus, but it returned in 2021. He released the Cojonu 2015 and the 2018 in 2022 and 2023 respectively and called them the “Lost Years”. Vitola: Double Robusto Size: 5 x 55 Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Nicaraguan Country of Origin: Nicaragua Factory: My Father S.A. MSRP: $13.00 Final Score: 90

When it came to new products at the 2024 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Show, perhaps no booth was more active than Tatuaje Cigars. Owner Pete Johnson had elected to use the 2024 PCA Trade Show to showcase all of the releases he had planned for 2024. There was plenty to see as there were new offerings under the several brands in the Tatuaje portfolio. As we usually do, we conclude our PCA coverage with a visit to Tatuaje Cigars and Pete Johnson. This year, we present "34 Minutes with Pete Johnson" at PCA 2024. PCA 2024 Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-sRi
