Welcome to another rousing episode of our show. We got the band back together, and have a lot of catching up to do. Liza is back from England, and went to some really cool places, including the Sidecarcross World Championship and the Bike Shed Show. Meanwhile, Emma and Neil were at the Quail Motorcycle Gathering and have their own stories to tell. Liza introduces a new game called "Read My Mind" where we have to guess the spirit animal of certain bikes. Play along at home. Vinnie joins us for the first time to tell us about his role doing volunteer trail maintenance at Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area. It's hard work, and we all appreciate those that volunteer to keep our trails safe and fun. Lastly, we read some listener emails and answer some questions. From our listener submissions for our Insta 360 camera contest, it seems as if the critters are out to get us! On this motorcycle podcast we discuss garage happenings and Naked Jim and Stumpy John's recent high desert adventures. Miss Emma gives us a short lesson on anti-lock brakes. We also read the submissions we received from our contest. So many great stories! While all submissions were great, we picked a winner! Liza is off riding the mountains of Pakistan again, so it's her turn to pick a favorite from the archives, and it doesn't get much better than Debbie Evans Leavitt. She's a 7 time Taurus World Stunt Award winner, she's in the AMA Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Stunt Hall of Fame. She's got almost 400 movie and TV credits to her name, and was also one of the best trials riders in the world. But for us her most notable job has been that of Trinity on the Ducati in Matrix Revolutions which I believe to be the best motorcycle stunt in the movies ever done. Debbie tells us about her dad that got her into riding when she was six, some of the highs and lows of her career, and her whole family that shares in her love of motorcycles and stunts. Liza is joined by special co-host Wendy Crockett, who has just returned from a Vintage Rides tour of Nepal. The trip was supposed to be an easy tour with 90% paved roads, but due to weather and earthquakes, plans changed. Heather joins us to share her experience as a rider with little off road experience, and how she met the challenges and came back a more confident rider. If only she could've gotten off road training before the trip, which is exactly what Vintage Rides offers. Alex joins us from France to talk about the Vintage Ride Academy tours they offer, one in France and the other in Wales. 1 day of training followed by 1 or 2 days of exploring the nearby dirt roads is the perfect way to better your riding skills, and prepare yourself for an adventure to one of the over 20 locations Vintage Rides offers. Steve from Be Crash Free in Idaho joins us to talk about the partnership with Vintage Rides that brings us to the big news; Academy USA. That's right! You can now book an off road training class, followed by 2 days of exploring the dirt roads in the Boise mountains with none other than Liza and Wendy as your coaches. We are so excited to start this new chapter in our lives, and to give riders the tools needed to enjoy an off road adventure. The One Moto Show in Portland is one of the best motorcycle shows ever, and we can't wait every year for it to come around. With the perfect blend of bikes, music, art and food, you can spend days here and still find some new interesting thing you somehow missed before. We got some great interviews with bike builders Carey Hart, Don Neely and Doug McMahon, reps from Gates, Kawasaki and Icon, and painter Theresa Contreras. Check it out and enjoy! Evolutionary neuroscientist and acclaimed author Mark Changizi joins us to talk about his new book, Motorcycle Mind, that reveals the science behind why motorcycling feels so exhilarating. From the dynamics of human perception and emotion to the physical symbiosis between rider and machine, Motorcycle Mind uncovers how the ride transforms us into something primal—instinctive, expressive, and alive. We have a fun talk with him about perception and perspective, as well as why we all ride. The International Six Days Enduro race is considered the Olympics of dirt biking, and Jeff has completed 33 of them with 11 gold medals, 20 silvers and two bronze. It was his 34th and last year that he was not able to complete it, and being too old was not the reason. So how does this AMA Hall of Famer compete at this top level for decades, setting a record that will most likely never be matched? And after a feat like this, does he slow down? No, he's still racing at 68 in, of all things, ice racing. Jeff joins us to share his stories, his wins, his challenges and to talk about the KDX 200 that was such a big part of his career. What do bowling pins and Italian 2 strokes have to do with Harley Davidson? That would be the HD ownership of Aermacchi and the AMF ownership of Harley Davidson during the 60s and 70s. At this time, HD sold scooters, dirtbikes, minibikes and even a moped alongside the big cruisers they are still known for today. Why did they all go away, and will we ever see the diversification of HD again? It's that time of year where we head to Vegas for the AimExpo. This is an industry expo where you can see new bikes, parts, products, manufacturers, organizations and anything else you can think of that is involved in the motorcycle industry. Its a place to network, see old friends, and talk to industry experts all under one roof. We love it especially because of the access to people who can answer all of our questions, and we have a lot of them. Liza talks to Ollie from Oset bikes, an electric trials bike company that makes bikes for every age and size. Emma and Liza talk to John at KTM, and find out what we truly can expect in the future for them, and put to rest the rumors of their demise. Liza talks to Jason at Cometic Gaskets, and finds out what the latest technology in gaskets is and how it works. Phil and Liza talk to Chris at Moto Morini about their latest offerings of bikes, which truly reflect their Italian heritage and design. This is definitely a brand you should be checking out. Jim and Scottie talk to Matt at Cruz Tools, and learn more about these tool sets that are not just brand, but model specific. Scottie and Junky talk to Ted at Blaster, who makes products you know like PB Blaster, Metal Rescue and Gunk. They've developed a complete line of products for motor sports, as well as a new spray bottle cap that's exactly what we needed. Emma talks to Jose at MV Agusta about their future after being sold by KTM, as well as their line of bikes that may well be the sexiest motorcycles you can buy. Craig talks to Clinton at Battery Tender about how important battery maintenance is, as well as the wide array of chargers they sell and the advantages each one has. We are joined by three special guests this week: Michael Petrosini of TBEXUSA, Joseph Ford of Ride Again, and one armed racer extraordinaire Jason Griffin. They all have different stories, but they all found each other through one common thing; their disabilities. Michael discovered the The Bike Experience while in the UK, and as someone who recently found out that he had MS, he offered to volunteer and see what differently abled people could accomplish. Upon returning to the USA he started TBEXUSA to continue helping people find their way back onto two wheels. Jason lost his right arm at a very young age, so he had to figure out how to do things different. With the help of family and friends, he was able to modify motorcycles and eventually get into flat track racing. And with the help of Michael, he was able to take his skills to the track where he shows everyone that his limits do not define him. Joseph lost his leg in a devastating motorcycle accident, and made the decision while still in his hospital bed that he was going to figure out how to get back on two wheels. He share with us his journey overcoming not just the physical limitations brought on by the accident, but also the mental hurdle he had to overcome. Please donate whatever you can to these groups. Every cent is well spent, and riding again is the best gift you can give a fallen rider. https://www.tbexusa.org/ https://rideagainfoundation.org/ https://www.instagram.com/jasongriffinofficial/ With Liza, Miss Emma, Naked Jim and Bagel. breakingawayadventures.com/misfits-rally-vol-3 Join our Discord at discord.gg/hpRZcucHCT www.motorcyclesandmisfits.com motorcyclesandmisfits@gmail.com www.patreon.com/motorcyclesandmisfits www.zazzle.com/store/recyclegarage www.youtube.com/channel/UC3wKZSP0J9FBGB79169ciew
Motorcycle Missions is an amazing non-profit that gives throttle therapy to veterans and first responders with PTSD. They do this by offering welding classes, dirtbiking lessons, bike building projects, track days, drag racing, accident scene management lessons and group trips to events like Sturgis, MotoGP and others. Krystal figured out that throttle therapy is wrenching, riding and community, and started to Motorcycle Missions to help others the same way she found relief through motorcycles. Mary McGee and Malcolm Smith were racing pioneers and legends, and they both died a day apart last week, so we are dedicating this episode to them. You may have heard of Malcolm Smith due to him being featured in the greatest motorcycle film of all time, On Any Given Sunday, but chances are you hadn't heard of Mary until her recent death. Mary was a car racer, motorcycle road racer and off road motorcycle racer. She was the first woman to race in the AFM and FIM, and the first PERSON to ride solo in the grueling Baja 500. She was an amazing talent who was often discriminated as a women in a man's sport just because she was too good. Fortunately her story is being told in a new documentary called Motorcycle Mary, and we have filmmaker Haley Watson join us to share her experiences getting to know Mary, and some of the stories that didn't make the film. Check out Motorcycle Mary on Youtube and other streaming platforms. Malcolm Smith is the greatest motorcycle to have ever lived according to Liza, and she's willing to fight you over this. Smith won eight gold medals between 1966 and 1976 in the International Six Day Trial. The International Six Day Trials, a form of off-road motorcycle Olympics, is the oldest annual competition sanctioned by the FIM dating back to 1913. He was a five-time overall winner of the Baja 1000 (two on motorcycles and three on cars); a four-time winner of the Baja 500 (one in motorcycles and three in cars); has twice won the Mint 400 in Nevada and the Roof of Africa Rallye; finished fourth in the 1988 Paris–Dakar Rally on cars; and was the overall winner of the 1987 Atlas Rallye in Morocco. Both Mary and Malcolm were in the AMA Hall of Fame, and will be remembered for their infectious joy of riding, and inspiring people around the world. Trials riding is for everybody. The bikes are affordable and small, the risk of injury is low, anyone of any age or gender can compete and the skills make you a better dirt and street rider. Plus you can do it in the desert, the mountains or even your backyard. So why aren't more people riding trials bikes? Bryce from Conquer the West joins us to talk trials, the bikes, the rules, the challenges and the fun. Maybe you should consider trying it too! There's a new Ducati engine, and it doesn't have Desmodromic valves!!! Emma thinks Ducati is on the right path, and this engine is getting her excited. But there's also new engines from Honda and CF Moto. Does she care about these? We go down the list of new things recently announced, including new models from Zero, an Electric Royal Enfield, a fuel injected DRZ400, and a more powerful Vespa, and ask the group if they care and if so why. Liza got a jeep and can't stop talking about it. But really, when you think about it, a Jeep is practically a motorcycle. You can easily work on them, and driving them gives you almost the same sensation as riding, with your hair in the wind and the smells of the outdoors. In fact, many Jeep owners are also riders, so the crossover makes sense. But here's a question that brings us to our topic tonight; muscle bikes. How many muscle car owners are also muscle bike owners? And why aren't muscle bikes more popular? We dive into the history and origins of muscle bikes, and Emma does a History Hole on the Harley Vrod. We also talk about what makes a bike a muscle bike, and which are our favorites. Let's talk about racing. Special guest Roadracing World editor Michael Gougis joins us to talk about his new book Legend: Marc Marquez' 2019 MotoGP World Championship. https://a.co/d/cuRGfwb Marc Marquez is one of the best racers ever, and in 2019 he was unbeatable. Michael tells us about his book which breaks down the season and highlights what makes Marc so special. We also dive into other racing topics, like who will be the next great American racer in MotoGP, and what does he think of the baggers. Next up, Emma explains why the 2 stroke race bikes were replaced with the slower 4 stroke bikes, and then we read listener emails. Everyone is back from their trips, and the band is back together. Stumpy John and Naked Jim share stories from their trip to Moon Rocks Nevada OHV. They experienced everything from wide open desert to single track and river beds. Desert riding can bring a lot of fun and dangers both, but fortunately they had no issues. One thing for sure though, is that they have people like our guest Ed Stovin to thank for having access to these off road wonderlands. Ed has been working tirelessly as an off road advocate, gaining access to lands that weren't available, as well as fighting to keep access to parks and BLM land. It's a constant battle against environmentalists who'd rather just keep everyone out to protect the local environment, rather than educate and work with the off road groups to find a balance and appreciation for the wild. And in what could be considered the exact opposite of desert riding, Emma shares stories from her recent trip to Roma and Tuscanny on a Moto Guzzi. The US Commerce Department has proposed a ban on all connected vehicles our of China and Russia. What does this mean? Companies like Kove and CF Moto are on the precipice of gaining a foothold on the US market, so this would be a huge blow to them. So what is the fear and the threat? Listen and let us know what you think. Next up, Liza's getting old and crotchety, and cant stand certain motorcycle trends. This would include tucked license plates, loud stereos and side tail lights to name a few. Let us know what you find annoying or stupid. And lastly, we read listener emails. We've got a fun show for you this week. We start out news about flat track racing, the Honda Dax and why the Niken is even more awesome than we already knew. Then we play a game where everyone has to guess the countries with the most motorcycles. Cat and Mouse from Leod Escapes join us for tour updates, travel tips and exciting news about a new Misfits tour next year in Spain. This week we are joined by a surprise guest, Karam from Canada. It's about this time every year that the snowbirds descend from Canada down to our year round riding climate to see what our California roads have to offer. Karam is on such an adventure, but this one is different. He's riding a DR650 with all of his belongings and gear, and a Husky as well. Fortunately Scotty discovered him at a local grocery store, and invited him to come share his story. In fact, Douglas and Scotty have their own adventure to share, from their recent trip to the NoCal BDR. It usually takes 12 days to complete, so Scotty figured they could do it in 4. Unfortunately not everyone is as hardcore rider as Scotty is, so plans had to be pivoted. And lastly, we learn about some exciting motorcycle news, and read listener emails. This week we dive into an interesting topic: staggered riding formation. This is something that is passed on from rider to rider, and not taught in any schools. Different groups have different guidelines to their rides, sometimes making it confusing even to an experienced group rider. What is the standard, and who should be setting it? Next up we play a game called Breakfast Club, where we find the bike that best matches each of the stereotypes from the movie. Do you agree with our picks? Then we ask Emma some stupid questions about motorcycles. Why don't we have square pistons? Why is the throttle on the right? As usual, Emma has the answer to all of them, except there's one that may just have her perplexed. And lastly, we read listener emails and hand out some sage advice. This week on our motorcycle podcast we are joined by Steve Knoble of Knoble Moto. Steve has carved out a unique mechanic career by teaching others how to wrench. You can find his videos on FixMyHawg, Youtube, Udemy or you can learn in person if you're in the Cleveland area. Either way, he's going to feel good about his job at the end of the day. Empowering people through tools is a gift that we experience every Sunday, but he does it full time. We talk about the types of classes he offers, and why it's worth it to pay for his tutorials rather than filter through everything youtube has to offer. He also gets to teach kids how to fix motorcycles through MotogoCleveland. I just wish we has these in every part of the country. But first, Bagel starts us off by telling us about a new 3 wheeled electric scooter that may be a game changer. This English company is doing things different, and we hope to see it come stateside in the future. Lastly, we finish with listener emails. This week we dive into a controversial topic; lane splitting. It's so common in California, yet Texas just officially made it illegal. And now that Minnesota is becoming the 6th state to legalize it, we wonder what everyone else is so scared of? We list the pros and cons of splitting and filtering, as well as some of the unwritten etiquette. Next up, Scotty is fresh back from her Mongolian Monkey Bike adventure, and shares the miseries and triumphs from this quirky outing. What music genre does your bike represent? Travelling solo for more than 33,000 miles on a motorcycle taught Annette Birkmann to experience the unknown not as fraught with danger but as providing endless opportunities. 'Every time I have reached a goal in my life, it has been with the expectation that once this goal is achieved, everything will from then on be fine – I will be free, I will be happy. But things seldom work out that way.' At the age of thirty-one, Annette left her job as a lawyer in Denmark, sold her belongings, and travelled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to fulfill a childhood dream: to ride a motorcycle. In Buenos Aires, Annette bought her first motorcycle and after working eight months in a motorcycle workshop, embarked alone on a one-year motorcycle journey through the Americas. However, she quickly discovered that despite moving to another hemisphere, some things remained unchanged. Her problems had come along, and no matter where she was, familiar traits lodged in her inner self required her attention. https://www.annettebirkmann.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Journey-Me-Inconvenient-Realities-Existence-ebook/dp/B0D7SVB2J4 With Liza, Miss Emma, Scotty, Naked Jim and Bagel. This week we are joined by Ryan Kluftinger, better known as Ryan F9 or Ryan Fortnine, or maybe you know him as 'that guy from Youtube'. Either way, you've probably seen some of his videos on the Fortnine Youtube channel. The Unkillable KLR is one of our favorites, and Why I Stopped Wearing Motorcycle Body Armour is one of the most controversial. We talk to him about both of these, as well as the production side of things, and also spring a game on him called "Finish Your Own Quote". Ryan is down to earth, creative and smart, and we have a great time learning more about what it takes to create all the amazing videos he and his team does. We would also like to thank Insta360 for sponsoring this episode, and giving us a bunch of cameras and accessories to try and also to give away. Liza talks to VP of sales, Michael Shabun, who explains some of the new features, and why Insta360 is the best action camera for motorcyclists. If you would like to enter our contest to win a camera, send a haiku or limerick about your motorcycle to motorcyclesandmisfits@gmail.com. It's our favorite time of year, AMA Vintage Days at Mid Ohio racetrack. This is the best motorcycle event not to be missed, which we look forward to every year. Racing, hare scrambles, motocross, trials, pitbikes, swap meet, seminars, test rides, wall of death, dirt trails, barrel racing, burnouts, mosh pit and so much more. We got some great interviews that perfectly capture the essence of VMD. We talk to AMA's Mitch Boehm about the AMA magazine, and James Holter about what the AMA is doing about our of control insurance rates for moto events. We also talk to MotoAmerica phenom Kayla Yaakov, as well as Hall of Fame motocross legend Brock Glover. And to round it out, we talk to 14 year old Ivy, who's just learning to ride, and BJ from DC Dirt Camp. Listen and enjoy! This week we are off to the MotoAmerica races at Laguna Seca, and boy did we have a good time. Even if you don't follow racing, there something for everyone to enjoy. We did some test rides and Liza makes a bold prediction about a certain Chinese bike about to be released here. Jim is back from his trip to Montana and Idaho on his new Tenere 700, and has stories of wildlife that will kill you, micro camping, and visiting Evel's grave. Also, Liza finds out that Robbie Knievel is dead. Bagel is back from the Slug Rocket's scooter rally, and managed to have not one but two mishaps on the Vespa that could've left him stranded if not for ingenuity, luck and good friends.
