In episode 10, we journey through the round window... 2ZY Manchester arrives in mid-May 1922, then children's broadcasting in mid-November: Kiddies Corner, as part of a night of General Election results. Weird. Hear the voices that started children's broadcasting: Kenneth Wright (aka Uncle Humpty Dumpty) and Reginald Jordan (a 10-year-old radio announcer). Back in the present day, CHRIS JARVIS (CBeebies, CBBC, Children's BBC, 'The Anorak', Show Me Show Me, Stargazing... etc etc etc) joins us for an exclusive chat about the role of children's TV and radio, right up to his brand new project, Magic Den for CBeebies Radio. Expect a short break before ep11 (it's summer hols), as we stampede towards the birth of the Beeb in a few episodes' time. We aren't affiliated to said Beeb in any way at all. We just like talking about them, and where they've come from, and maybe where they're going. ...So your licence fee is not supporting this project! This Getting Better Acquainted Extra is a talk I gave as part of the Maker Sessions at the London Podcast Festival 2018 at King’s Place. The title of the talk was: Passion Projects The blurb was: For better or worse, Dave Pickering has been working on passion projects since he can remember. In 2008, he wrote a drama series for a friend, which was nominated for a Sony Radio Award in 2009. He’s made podcasts in a variety of genres at the same time as working full time jobs and part time jobs, and for the last 4 years, around the paid freelance work that the passion projects have just about generated for him. His passion projects have won podcast awards, been recommended by the Guardian, Time Out and the Financial Times and have been featured on Radio 4, Radio 5 Live, Cbeebies Radio and Resonance FM. In this workshop, Dave will explore why you should follow your passions, why you should definitely not follow your passions, and how to find the perseverance to keep following your passions when no one else seems to be interested in them. http://www.davepickeringstoryteller.co.uk Thanks to Martin Zaltz Austwick and Zoe Jeyes for asking me to do it. In GBA 315 we get better acquainted with Andy. Since Andy works in very similar areas of audio to me, but has a very different approach to how he works, this is a compare and contrast conversation where we talk about why bassists might have an affinity for radio production, making radio and podcast comedy and drama, working with a foot in independent audio and a foot within the mainstream radio world, what it's like when you're locked in the audio cave and whether we are pond-skaters, water-boatmen or ducks! In this week's Feedback, Roger Bolton speaks to the BBC's Director of Editorial Policy and Standards, David Jordan, about 'due impartiality' in climate change coverage. And writer Morwenna Banks explains why she chose radio to tell a powerful story of friendship in the face of breast cancer. Her Radio 4 Saturday Drama Goodbye starred acting heavyweights Olivia Colman and Natascha McElhone as Lizzie and Jen, two friends struggling to say goodbye after Lizzie's terminal diagnosis. It left many Feedback listeners astounded by its realistic and emotional portrayal of the situation. We revisit our listener panel of four mothers in Cambridge to find out how they got along when they tried to find and use CBeebies Radio. A recent BBC Trust survey found that not one parent they spoke to knew how to access the CBeebies radio service - did the Feedback mothers fare any better? And Roger speaks to the Controller of CBeebies, Kay Benbow, to find out what they are doing to publicise CBeebies Radio. And from Raa Raa the Lion to Reith - we hear from some Feedback listeners' views on Grayson Perry's Reith Lectures. Producer: Will Yates A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
