In this episode of Audience, you’ll hear Part II of our “Centralized vs. Decentralized” series. Matt and Stuart are joined by “The Podfather” himself, Adam Curry. Adam stops by to talk about protecting podcasting, and all those involved with creating podcast content. In addition to his many successes in podcasting, Adam is the Founder of PodcastIndex.Org, whose mission is to preserve, protect, and extend the open, independent podcasting ecosystem. Adam and Matt also discuss the “value 4 value” construct that allows payment to be distributed easily from listener/consumer to independent creators, including compensating smaller participants in the podcasting sphere such as the app designers. Adam also touches on topics like the network of small independent podcasting production companies that currently exist (like Castos.com) which form a perfectly distributed and decentralized network that protects content creators from being de-platformed completely. Thanks to Skye Pillsbury from The Squeeze podcast for the opening of this episode. You’ll hear more from Skye next time, as a guest for Part III, the final installment of our series, and she’ll be joined by guests Sam Sethi from Podland and Juleyka Lantigua from LWC Studios. SiriusXM is being sued for failing to provide podcast transcripts for deaf users by the National Association for the Deaf and the Disability Rights Advocates. As we researched in June 2020, transcripts can offer significant SEO benefits. The podcast:transcript tag is an open standard, supported by a number of podcasts and offers both static transcripts (in HTML or text) or real-time captions (in the SRT format). Can you believe it's almost the end of 2021? What a year! I always like to review what's ahead for us in the podcasting industry, so I invited Sam Sethi, a 30-year podcast veteran, to tell us what he thinks. Sam is the Operational Director at Viral Tribe, the Managing Director at River Radio, and the host and producer of Podland News. A terrific podcast that he does with James Cridland from Podnews. I am so glad I reached out and asked him to chat with me because he shared some fantastic insights into what we should look forward to next year and the future. We touch on what Apple and Spotify have been doing right and wrong this last year, what impressive development is happening with independent developers in the space, and why Sam doesn't bet on YouTube podcasting lasting. And so much more, so make sure you listen through to the end. You can connect with Sam on Linkedin or listen to Podland on your podcast player. _____ ➜ WE DROP NEW EPISODES BI-MONTHLY, SO SUBSCRIBE! I of course plug my own and Adam Curry's but also highlight some others which include (and is not exhaustive off all there are): AbleKraft, Podland News and other No Agenda podcast spinoffs. I also explain some strategic decision on why I will be spending my time on some podcasting aspects and not on others.Big thanks to Oscar Merry & Nullifier. My Co-host of the Podcast Review Show Eric K Johnson has a saying, "Nobody Gets on a Bus Without Knowing Where It's Going." Today we talk about how it is 100% up to you on how you start your episodes. I also talk about insights from reading the book, "The Creator’s Compass" which talks about three different levels of presenting content. Sponsor: School of Podcasting Get your podcast off the ground, sounding professional, without spending money on equipment you don't need by using the step-by-step tutorials, the private Facebook Group (filled with brilliant podcast minds) and live group coaching. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee when you go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/join The Generic Show Introduction Welcome to (show name) where we (what you do) so that you can (benefit of listening) our website is (website address). Then introduce the episode, and if you can explain why people should listen to you, throw that in as well. Smooth Transactions Don't Happen By Accident When I do the Podcast Review Show with Erik K Johnson so we both can see the points each person wants to make. If needed we loft up a "softball" comment so the person can make their point. Consequently, when I see we have hit all the bullet points I don't have to ask, "Are you ready to move on." James and Sam on Podland do a great job of organizing the many topics they cover into stories that easily transition from one to the next. They transition into interviews by providing just the information that resonates with the listener (do we really need their whole LinkedIn bio? No!) and consequently when the show is over I find myself asking, "Already?" It just flows nicely. This doesn't happen by accident. When you have multiple segments take some time to think about how you are going to transition from one to the other. If you don't do this, it's not the end of the world, but it is often the little things that separate good from great. It's the little things that other people don't take the time to do that can really set you apart. I actually use transition music (SHORT music) to signal my audience that we're moving to a new topic. The bottom line is it is YOUR SHOW and you can do WHATEVER you want. Don't let this stop you from creating your show because it's not "perfect."When in doubt ask someone (not related to you) for feedback and/or do what feels right to you. Three Levels of Content I read the ebook The Creator's Compass from Jay Acunzo and I loved it. It really made me think, and it's pretty creative. Here is one thing that made me go, "Oh yeah, that is better." Level 1 Content You have some gold. (You drop facts in their lap) Level 2: What Could Happen Here’s some gold. You have some now. And because you have some now, you can do all kinds of things: create some jewelry to feel beautiful or make someone else feel beautiful, etc Level 3: Your Opinion When you say the phrase, "I think" you take all the information, all the pros and cons and insights you have, and put them into an opinion. Everyone will have their own opinion and that makes your show different than anyone else's sow. Coming Soon: Dissecting Hot Ones on YouTube Hot Ones is an amazing show, with AMAZING questions. This Getting Better Acquainted Extra is a talk I gave as part of the Maker Sessions at the London Podcast Festival 2018 at King’s Place. The title of the talk was: Passion Projects The blurb was: For better or worse, Dave Pickering has been working on passion projects since he can remember. In 2008, he wrote a drama series for a friend, which was nominated for a Sony Radio Award in 2009. He’s made podcasts in a variety of genres at the same time as working full time jobs and part time jobs, and for the last 4 years, around the paid freelance work that the passion projects have just about generated for him. His passion projects have won podcast awards, been recommended by the Guardian, Time Out and the Financial Times and have been featured on Radio 4, Radio 5 Live, Cbeebies Radio and Resonance FM. In this workshop, Dave will explore why you should follow your passions, why you should definitely not follow your passions, and how to find the perseverance to keep following your passions when no one else seems to be interested in them. http://www.davepickeringstoryteller.co.uk Thanks to Martin Zaltz Austwick and Zoe Jeyes for asking me to do it.

Miranda Sawyer presents a new, stylish round-up of the best and most memorable podcasting from around the world. There's been an explosion in the profusion and quality of podcasts, plus a new public awareness after the breakthrough moment in 2014 with Serial. Suddenly, podcasts have become cool. There are now more than 100,000 English speaking podcast feeds worldwide covering everything from science to sport to every conceivable niche. Last year, there were 165 million podcasts downloaded just from BBC Radio 4 programmes alone, and the trend is seemingly ever upwards. But is this a bubble or is podcasting set to take its place alongside TV and radio as a long-term media genre? British podcaster Helen Zaltzman guests in this first episode which explores the genre, plays some great podcasts and asks why it's taken off in such a big way. Producer: Jim Frank.
