Alex James, Simon Pegg, and Brownload Festival #495Welcome back to the Chris Moyles Show on Radio X Podcast. This week, we learnt that Captain Crapbeard's karaoke song is Don't Mug Yourself by The Streets. Oh, and we launched a new radio station. No biggie. It was great to hear from Chris Kamara, who joined the team to chat about a really important cause. He's partnered with Andy's Man Club and Drinkaware to raise awareness of an increasing amount of people using alcohol as a coping mechanism. And of course, Chris had to ask him a few football related questions whilst he was there… Remember, IT'S OK TO TALK! Check out andysmanclub.co.uk if you were affected by any of the issues discussed in this interview.Friend of the show Alex James (off of Blur) came into the studio to talk about Big Feastival, which is now in its 14th year! Despite performances from Faithless, Travis, The Wombats, and many many more, Alex decided that the selling point of this year's Big Feastival was Barrioke with Sean Williamson. Hard to disagree with that… On the eve of a big premiere, Hollywood star Simon Pegg sat down with the team to discuss his role in the new Mission Impossible film, using his daughter as an excuse to talk to cool celebs, and Oasis.Yeah, thought so. 2025 Season, here we go! A bit late, but hey - I'm a child of divorce. Dean Windass was never really an elite player at the top flight of English football. He is a legend of Hull City – that Yorkshire club with great history - but Hull rarely find themselves in the top flight of English football. He had many great moments at Hull – some of the best in that clubs history – and when Dean retired, they offered to build a statue of him in front of the stadium, but he declined the offer saying, “I could not think of one working man who had a statue' – its sounds fake I know, but it is true. Like many players of his era, he did not have an easy time upon leaving the game. He struggled with depression and turned to alcohol to anesthetize said depression which made him more depressed and round and round he went. There were dark times and after a failed suicide attempt, his friend (and great ex player) Chris Kamara got him into a rehab facility. It was a very hard time, but he was able to get sober, face his demons and turn his life around. He then began offering help to other players – help that he did not really see when he left the game. He began posting an inspirational twitter vid every morning - which went viral and garners quite the following to this day. He even gave a TED talk on his experiences and is so brutally honest and vulnerable about what he went through - I recommend you check it out. So, a bit of a different one this one, but if you give it a go – I hope you get something out of it. It is one of those episodes where I kind of wanna say, pretentious as it may sound, maybe forward it onto a friend who is not in the best of spots – it may help them….So here we go - #22 Soccerpod – Dean Windass. Thanks for listening! Chris Kamara + Ben ShephardFootball pundit + TV presenterColleagues + FriendsChris Kamara has brought an infectious personality to our television screens for over 25 years. “Kammy” as he's known to TV audiences, started out as a pro footballer before becoming a manager and then joining Sky Sports as a reporter and pundit, most famously working with Jeff Stelling on Soccer Saturday. In 2021, Kammy received a crushing diagnosis of apraxia of speech, a rare neurological condition which affects the ability to speak fluently. His condition meant he was no longer able to continue in his much loved role at Sky Sports. He is now focused on his recovery, podcasting and campaigning for others in a similar situation to himself.Alongside Chris is his friend and colleague of 12 years plus, Ben Shephard. Ben and Kammy have worked together at Sky Sports as Goals on Sunday co-hosts and in the same capacity for ITV's Ninja Warrior UK series. Ben has been a familiar face on breakfast television for over 20 years and regularly co-hosts Good Morning Britain on ITV with his good friends Kate Garraway and Susanna Reid. His production company Triple Brew Media has made, “Lost for Words”, a documentary which tells Kammy's story and helps to explain the issues around apraxia of speech.Together, they talk about Kammy's struggles in coming to terms with his condition, how he wakes every day not knowing if he'll be able to speak and of course, there's some football banter about Ronaldo. Kane and Southgate. This four way conversation was recorded on 13th December 2022. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Chris Kamara is a former professional footballer and pundit who lit up our screens as part of Sky Sports punditry team for 25 years before he left Sky this year. He now has a podcast, Kammy and Ben's Proper Football podcast. But there's more to Chris than meets the eye. Behind the cheery facade is someone who's had to overcome an incredibly hard start in life, from being one of the few black kids in his area to his family at times having to resort to beg for food. After a diagnosis with Apraxia, he is one of the most high-profile people with the disease. Chris has always managed to look for the positives in life no matter what it throws at him. A self-described ‘people person', despite going through experiences most of us can only imagine he's always found his glass half full. And if he can, any of us can. First up is Gary Roberts and Francis Joseph - a footballing double act if ever there is one. Theres two guys were hilarious. Forming a lethal striking partnership back in the 80s playing in the team with the killer midfield of Stan Bowles, Terry Hurlock and Chris Kamara, you could see that the Roberts/Joseph bond was still there 30 years later. They had the audience in stitches - cracking joke after joke. Gary Roberts claimed that he had invented the Cruyff turn - years before the master of the Cruyff turn Johan Cryff had actually coined the phrase. Francis Joseph told the audience how he was ‘tapped up' (allegedly) by Brentford in the bar after a match at Griffin Park after just destroying The Bees - scoring two goals in Wimbledon's comeback which saw them win 3-2 after being 2-0 down at half time. They talk about Stan Bowles' dodgy entourage - some sort of West London mafia. Three months later he was playing football down at Griffin Park With the summer fast approaching, 90 Brentford fans joined the Dave Lane and Billy Grant from Beesotted and a bunch of Brentford legends - Gary Roberts, Francis Joseph, Billy Manuel & Graham Benstead - at the fabulous Drayton Court Hotel in Ealing to see the season off in style at their end of season Pride of West London Bees-Up. Following on from the Christmas Bees-Up at Fullers Brewery with Carl Hutchings, Richard Cadette and Paul Gibbs and the first Bees-Up at The Globe with Terry Evans, Marcus Gayle and Ijah Anderson, this do was set to be a proper laugh. And it didn't fail to deliver. It was an evening packed with entertainment that went on until the early hours- a magician (a Fulham-supporting magician at that), Tim Clarke the Brentford-supporting comedian, DJ Pricey on the ones and twos as well as two Brentford legends sessions. Even ex Bee Chris Kamara made an appearance to tell a tale bout his ex team-mates. There was also an auction - raising over £1k for two charities (we're still collecting the money as we speak) - Brentford Community Trust and CALM - the campaign against living miserably fighting male depression with prized very kindly donated by Brentford Football Club, The Globe and Fullers'. The Beesotted Pride of West London End of Season Bees-Up podcast will be split into three parts.
