Comedian Ed Gamble calls himself a “very greedy boy.” That's because he's always loved food, from the diary entry he wrote at six years old about his passion for calamari and pastitsio, to the desserts he now critiques as a judge on the BBC show Great British Menu. But his relationship with eating has taken many twists and turns in his life: first when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and then when he decided to lose weight as an adult. Dan and Ed discuss all of that and more, live on stage at the London Podcast Festival. And Ed answers the question that's become a staple of his own podcast, Off Menu: popadams or bread? The Sporkful production team includes Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Nora Ritchie, Jared O'Connell, and Giulia Leo, with help this week from Kimmie Gregory. Hurrah! The hiatus is over. Welcome back friends and fellow crushers. Crushed is back with the live episode recorded at the London Podcast Festival just a couple of weeks ago. If you were there, you might hear yourself chuckling. My guest is of course the inimitable (and yes, I have tried) Miles Jupp! Former News Quiz host, erstwhile portrayer of Archie the Inventor in Balamory (in a very dashing Tam O'Shanter, honestly, google it), and the lucky, lucky man who got to be in Hugh Laurie's "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?" Guess which one we talked about most? He is an utter joy, and a very funny man. I think you'll enjoy an hour of him deflecting my probing into his inner emotional life, while I try to prise him open like a reluctant clam. Do we leave with a deeper understanding of the early loves and lusts of Miles Jupp? Arguably, no. But we do learn the new-to-me term "raging bonk-on", and get hints of a secret hankering for an older stateswoman. I hope it's not the Queen. Lots of lovely new episodes dropping over the next couple of months so do subscribe if you haven't already. love and crushes, MCS xxx Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Shakira Spencer was a loving mother-of-two, who lived to be loved and gave it back in spades. But when her “best friend” became her worst enemy, her life no longer became her own, she was reduced to being little more than a slave, and across the weekend Friday 9th to Monday 12th of September 2022 – out of boredom or spite - her so-called friends subjected her to what the judge described as “sadistic cruelty”.Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile UK True Crime Podcast with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. Nick and Angela welcome their first guest of series 6 to Dish HQ. Comedian Katherine Ryan hails from Ontario, Canada. She studied town planning at university in Toronto before making the move to the UK in 2008. Katherine is one of the hardest working comics on the circuit. She makes regular TV appearances on panel shows like 8 Out of 10 Cats, has recorded many live comedy specials and even has her own drama series, The Duchess, on Netflix. Katherine has a podcast called Telling Everybody Everything and she and her family have just filmed series 2 of At Home with Katherine Ryan. She is currently touring her new stand-up show, Battleaxe, around the UK and Europe. Katherine enjoys a drink that is cold and clear, so Nick goes for an elderflower and mint martini while Angela is busy preparing a mouth-watering baked trout with chilli & ginger. The experts at Waitrose pair this with a Yalumba organic viognier from Southern Australia. There are few people more straight-talking than Katherine Ryan, who entertains Nick and Angela with funny food and family anecdotes, and recalls how a job at Hooters helped her find her calling. Nick and Angela recorded the very first Dish Live at the London Podcast Festival with comedian and writer Sophie Willan on 12 September. The show is available to watch online until 29 September and you can purchase a viewing pass here. You can watch full episodes of Dish now on Youtube All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Is it just us, or has the Empire Podcast got more hat-tricks than Erling Haaland? We have another terrific trio of guests this week, as Alex Godfrey speaks no evil with Speak No Evil, and podcast regular, James McAvoy. [19:49 - 34:40 approx] Then, Amon Warmann has a lovely chat with Kate Winslet, star of Lee (and thanks to Sam Clements for loaning us his podcast mics while Chris was away!). [56:50 - 1:12:15 approx] And finally, we bring you the interview the entire podteam (Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Amon) did with Reawakening star, and all-round acting royalty, Juliet Stevenson on last week's live show at the London Podcast Festival. [1:41:33 - 1:57:42 approx] Either side of those, Chris returns after a rare holiday and hosts Helen, James and Alex Godfrey as they discuss films from 1996 that deserve sequels (and why 1996 sucked cinematically), pay tribute to James Earl Jones, and review Lee, Speak No Evil, and Reawakening. Oh, and our old chum Corin Hardy drops in out of nowhere for a shameless plug. Enjoy.

On Monday 24th of October 1966, Dr Abdullah a noted psychiatrist walked into a clip joint in Soho and shot a hostess (Rita Rothery) in the chest from 3 feet away. Four days later, on Friday 28th of October 1966, he shot art Student Diane Spencer in broad daylight outside of Euston Station. Neither of them he had met before. The word 'Sirens' conjures up many images, possibly of beautiful mermaid-like creatures luring sailors to their watery deaths. These ancient Greek mythical creatures, linked to the Queen of the Underworld Persephone, feature in well known myths such as Jason and the Argonauts and Homer's story of Odysseus - The Odyssey. But their popular modern portrayal as 'sexy maidens' does not originate from ancient Greece, that is a much later invention. Sarah Clegg joins Tristan Hughes to discuss the story of the Sirens and how their legacy is intertwined with a number of other mythical creatures such as nymphs, the Mesopotamian demoness Lilith and, of course mermaids.Listen to Tristan and Sarah Clegg's previous episode on Lillith here: https://podfollow.com/the-ancients/episode/83e3167b27baefea4d862da99ce26425ba43e291/viewPresented by Tristan Hughes. It's one of the most popular alcoholic drinks in the world. But did you know that beer is also one of the world's oldest beverages, with a history that stretches back more than 10,000 years. Beer was the beverage of choice for a whole host of ancient Bronze Age civilisations arrayed across Mesopotamia. But why did cities like Babylon and Uruk become the first great beer drinking cultures in history? And what traces of this love of alcohol did they leave behind? In this episode of The Ancients, Tristan Hughes is joined by Prof. Tate Paulette to discover how those living on the plains of ancient Mesopotamia bred such a love for liquid amber and explore how exactly they brewed it.Presented by Tristan Hughes. Cats! These much loved furry friends have brightened people's lives for millenia. And it was the same in ancient times. They were pets. They were pest control against rats. They were even in some cases considered sacred. But how did they become the pet of choice for homes the world over? And why were they first domesticated? In today's episode of The Ancients, Tristan Hughes is joined by Professor James Serpell, an anthrozoologist from the University of Pennsylvania to delve into the origins of the First Cats and explore how they evolved from self-sufficient wildcats to the lovable felines we're familiar with today.Presented by Tristan Hughes. It is the most famous monument of ancient Greece. Its remains standing tall above modern Athens today, more than 2,000 years old. The Parthenon. A temple, treasury, the residence of a powerful general after Alexander the Great's death…and his courtesans, a church, a mosque, a gunpowder store, a tourist site. It's safe to say that the Parthenon has had a pretty fascinating story over the past two and a half millennia. Not to mention the amazing art and architecture of the building that continues to awe people down to the present day. Overlooking the Argolid Plain in the eastern Peloponnese, Mycenae was once the envy of the Mediterranean world. It rose to prominence in the late Bronze Age, centuries before the great Greek states of Athens, Sparta and Corinth, and is known as the birthplace of mythical bronze age figures such as Agammemnon, King of the Greeks. But how do know so much about it? What remains of this once glittering Greek citadel? In today's episode of The Ancients Tristan Hughes is joined by Dr Jorrit Kelder to talk through Mycenae's archeology - from its Cyclopaean stone walls and monumental tholos tombs, to it's golden face masks and great lion entrance gate.Presented by Tristan Hughes. Known as one of Rome's worst emperors, Commodus is famed for both his infamy and bravado. Ascending the throne as a teenager, he dressed up as Hercules, fought as a gladiator in the Colosseum, and renamed Rome after himself. But who was the real Commodus? And was he really as bad and megalomaniacal as some have claimed? In this episode of The Ancients, Tristan Hughes is joined by Dr Alex Imrie to dive into the conspiracies, controversy and assassinations that made the reign of Commodus so chillingly captivating and inspired the performance of Joaquin Phoenix in the 2000 sword and sandal epic ‘Gladiator'.Presented by Tristan Hughes.
