RE-RELEASE: Podcasting and Power

In this re-released episode first published  on 4th April 2022,  we explore the relationship between podcasting and power, both how podcasting has replicated and interacted with existing power systems, and how it offers a radical space for marginalised voices to create freely without gatekeepers. We think about how The Podcast Industry has developed into just another industry/workplace incorporating the issues inherent in those industries and workplaces. We look at the history and present of podcasting and ask you to consider adding your voice to its future. A listener asked me (via Patreon) to chat about Covid. The restrictions might be over, but Covid is still very much with us (and with others more than some). Why do we want to turn away from Covid? Why do we want to think we've 'beaten' the virus? Masks have gone, but does that mean that we've simply learnt nothing? I asked podcaster and storyteller Dave Pickering along to tell their story of Covid and help me put the personal in a cultural and political context.

In today's episode we return to exploring the relationship between podcasting and power, this time looking at how "Prestige" podcasting has replicated and interacted with existing power systems. We look at some of the worst cases of podcasts being made with a colonialist mindset, and then look at The Trojan Horse Affair and how that avoided the traps of previous prestige podcast journalism and how it was mostly dismissed by the wider media landscape.  This episode is hosted by Race Reflection's Audio Wizard/Witch, Dave Pickering: http://davepickeringstoryteller.co.uk/Down to a sunless sea: memories of my dad: https://podfollow.com/sunlesspod/view LINKS: The Complicated Ethics Of ‘Serial,' The Most Popular Podcast Of All Time: https://archive.thinkprogress.org/the-complicated-ethics-of-serial-the-most-popular-podcast-of-all-time-6f84043de9a9/ White Reporter Privilege: https://www.theawl.com/2014/11/white-reporter-privilege/The Science of Racism: Radiolab's Treatment of Hmong Experience: https://hyphenmagazine.com/blog/2012/10/22/science-racism-radiolabs-treatment-hmong-experienceHow ‘S-Town' Fails Black Listeners https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/how-s-town-fails-black-listeners-112210/S-Town is a stunning podcast. Content note: our chapter book touches on bullying, mortality and euthanasia. In discussing it, we also talk about dementia, and how Terry Pratchett dealt with it in his books for children.   This is an episode all about magical, virtual, invisible hats as worn by a pair of powerful girls. And for the first time, we have a guest host! Many thanks to Dave Pickering for stepping into Matt's wonderful shoes.   Our chapter book is A Hat Full of Sky, by Terry Pratchett. It is the second of the Tiffany books, and it's the one where she leaves home and starts to learn witching. We talk about coming of age stories, mean girls, self-respect and how bad thoughts don't make you a bad person.   Our picture book is Satoshi Kitamura's Millie's Marvellous Hat! It's a charming story about imagination and self-expression, and our discussion of it contains a large portion of bickering about what makes a hat a hat. Brim or brimless? Ribbon or no ribbon? Dave brings their experience as an early years library outreach worker as well as their past as a hat-wearer to bear, and shares some ideas about how you could bring this story to life for a group of under-5s. See all of Laura Ellen Anderson's new covers for the Tiffany sequence here: http://www.pickledink.com/blog/terry-pratchett-covers-laura-ellen-anderson   You can watch Pratchett's documentary about living with Alzheimer's here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmejLjxFmCQ&ab_channel=TheDocumentaryChannel112   And watch Satoshi Kitamura tell a kamishibai version of his book Hat Tricks here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtPm7B9_Ri0&ab_channel=BookTrust   Dave and their work can be found here: http://davepickeringstoryteller.co.uk/ We especially recommend their podcast Down to a Sunless Sea here: http://downtoasunlesspod.com/ And if you want to argue with them about hats, you can catch them on twitter @goosefat101   If you enjoyed this Pratt-chat, we also talked about The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents in our episode about Fairytale Retellings: https://eventhetrunchbull.podbean.com/e/episode-14-fairytale-retellings-pattans-pumpkin-and-the-amazing-maurice-and-his-educated-rodents/ And you can hear Dave's first appearance on the show in our episode about dementia: https://eventhetrunchbull.podbean.com/e/episode-12-dementia-moominvalley-in-november-and-the-remember-balloons/   What A Wonderful Day is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License by Shane Ivers of silvermansound.com

You will hear: - Dave doing an intro about their podcasts and history with them - why people might listen to them, what are the motivations - the danger of neoliberalism 'self improvement' and podcasts - the parasocial relationships that we have with podcast hosts and guests and how much that is part of why we listen (atomised, alienated from those around us we might turn to these kinds of relationships maybe?) - recommendations for good shows Dave's own projects are Getting Better Acquainted Stand Up Tragedy The Family Tree Down to a sunless sea: memories of my dad (I've listened to the first of these, it's really moving and excellent. Here's something a bit different this week. Rosie has been working on a pilot for this new podcast idea… I am an only child. I do not have a sister. As far as I know. That is enough for the rational, scientific part of me, the part inherited from my pragmatic mathematician father. Yet I have always believed deep within the more spiritual part of me that I do have a sister. So where the hell is she? This is a story about the conflict between what we know and what we feel... and how we make sense of the space in between. Please get in touch if you'd like to hear more of this story or could help in creating a longer series. Many thanks to Content is Queen for the micro grant which made this pilot possible, to Dave Pickering for editing and to Tony Pickering for designing the episode artwork. The Breakup Monologues, meanwhile, will be back soon with more live recordings and episodes. And, in the meantime, The Breakup Monologues book is available here: https://linktr.ee/breakupmonologues

And since that time, Dean and Phil have been dying to share it with you … Dave Pickering is a “storyteller” in so many ways. Based in the UK, he hosts and produces Getting Better Acquainted, Stand Up Tragedy and much, much more. He has a new show debuting this fall that sounds fascinating. Just interviewing him would make for a great show, but he actually starts out by turning the tables on Dean and Phil and interviewing THEM for the first half hour! What transpires is surprising, thoughtful and maybe even inspiring. All in all, it’s an hour unlike any other, which is to say, it’s what you loyal listeners have come to expect from YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Our picture book is Happy Christmas Gemma by Sarah Hayes and Jan Ormerod. This one's a nostalgia pick, for Nina especially, who had it read to her as a little one, and perfectly encapsulates Christmas cosiness, and the mix of pride and annoyance an older sibling has for a toddler sister.   And our chapter book is I Saw Three Ships by Elizabeth Goudge. This gorgeous short story takes us back to late 18th/early 19th century Cornwall/West Country for a retelling of the Three Wise Men. Steeped in legend, and Christmas cosiness, we loved this one.   Christmas giveaway update: We've added our fourth and final present to the Armchair Books totebag. This week we've added ‘What is Masculinity? Why Does it Matter? And Other Big Questions' – a book for children aged 10 and up about masculinity. Friend and guest of the podcast Dave Pickering (from the Moomin episode) is a contributor and has generously given us a copy to give away to you! The book has been described as ‘Timely, necessary, attentive to and respectful of its young audience, this book is a friend which holds out an encouraging, steadying hand to any child or young person wanting to reach a full humanity unfettered by the limiting impositions of gender stereotypes.' We have our first special guest this week – Dave Pickering is an aficionado on all things Moomins. We investigated these issues –- and more -- in a project supported by the UCL ChangeMakers and made a podcast to share our findings with you. You will learn about female academics’ significant impact on young women's aspirations to pursue postgraduate study or a career in academia. We also discuss the burdens of being women in academia, the culture of insecurity and self-doubt among women academics and students, alongside possible solutions for making academia more diverse. We hope that our findings are heard by many students and academics and that universities across the UK apply them to their academic environments. This Getting Better Acquainted Extra is a talk I gave as part of the Maker Sessions at the London Podcast Festival 2018 at King’s Place. The title of the talk was: Passion Projects The blurb was: For better or worse, Dave Pickering has been working on passion projects since he can remember. In 2008, he wrote a drama series for a friend, which was nominated for a Sony Radio Award in 2009. He’s made podcasts in a variety of genres at the same time as working full time jobs and part time jobs, and for the last 4 years, around the paid freelance work that the passion projects have just about generated for him. His passion projects have won podcast awards, been recommended by the Guardian, Time Out and the Financial Times and have been featured on Radio 4, Radio 5 Live, Cbeebies Radio and Resonance FM. In this workshop, Dave will explore why you should follow your passions, why you should definitely not follow your passions, and how to find the perseverance to keep following your passions when no one else seems to be interested in them. http://www.davepickeringstoryteller.co.uk Thanks to Martin Zaltz Austwick and Zoe Jeyes for asking me to do it. Jen and Dave from The Family Tree return for Episode 55 where we review Grandma, a 2015 comedy drama starring the awesome Lily Tomlin. The grandma (lesbian, widow and poet) in this film doesn’t conform to the usual granny stereotype, this film is part road trip for an abortion and part exploration of grief. Grandma benefits from a strong supporting cast in the form of gravelly Sam Elliot, Judy Greer, Marcia Gay Harden and the fabulous Laverne Cox. Scores [supsystic-tables id='57'] At 79 minutes this is a spectacularly short film and anyone with even the slightest interest in a bad tempered, lesbian Lily Tomlin should definitely check it out.   Scoring a very respectable 4.13 overall (Helen and Kobi scoring the same for the first time!) we recommend Grandma. Podcast Show Notes: All links below Episode Intro: Hello everyone and welcome to the 22nd episode. I am your host Tobi. In today’s episode there’s a slight change to the previously planned episode. That episode with Dave Pickering will be published next week. This week’s interview will be with June Reid. She is a fellow masters student who is also a sound system operator, with DJ Ade in Nzinga Sounds, where she plays dub reggae and other music around the Lewisham area. She talks about her studies in relation to African Caribbean female sound system operators, and also her struggles of being a female sound system operator in a very male dominated culture. She also talks about when she was a DJ at SLR pirate radio station, 99.5. Amongst the people she interviewed was Betty Wright and Ziggy Marley. This was really interesting for me as it reattached me to my roots, of listening to this music in East London and my own West Indian background. Also before I start the interview I’d like to introduce you to two poets I meet at that weekend. Dee Boo General AKA Donavan Christopher, who organised a toasting workshop for me and several other people. And also a poet I meet at the workshop called GNia, the Diction, Conviction, poet. They gave me poems for you to listen to so please enjoy. Poems: Dee Bo General: My name’s Donavan Christopher. I’m a Yorkshire lad, with a Jamaican mum and dad. We don’t have a Yorkshire accent, we have a Yardshire accent! Different! When did you really stop and think, sometimes you haven’t even got time to blink This one’s simply called, Different! And it goes like this! Who decides, what different is like, are we sure of wrong and right To be different, is a strange thing, if you really know what different is like But who decides, what different is like, what’s different, brown, black or white For you to know I’m different, you must be different too So whose different difficult, is it me or is it you Do I complain, now I refrain, from trying to be like you That makes me different difficult, for not agreeing with your view Well many are called, called are many, the chosen are only a few So let’s try to compromise, my wrong could be your right But I don’t care whose different, is it brown, black or white Greetings people, my name’s GNia: I’m a poet from Forest Hill and part of Torridan writers group. Shalom. Peace. This is about identity. So stop barking about the entity, the one called trump who a try to segregate all a we Stand up and fight for your identity, for your heritage and all that are for we From Africa in ships dem capture we, sail we to  Carib lands in slavery Some of us was indentured too, you no see?, my god dem try brock the spine a we A we identity But stand strong, look sharp. As Marcus said, we can astonish the world! Look for your roots indeed, and I’m not just talking about Kizzy and the one Kuntakinty For me, I went to Zimbabwe, I touched the ground in the 80s  Sang at the big Zim, Zimma stadium, ya see, to selbrate dem independence, scene Me even have a picture to show Tobi, and to salute dem, independence and identity Well, the struggle still a gwan, don’t you see? So me a ring de alarm for all a we We no longer affie say, “I am a man, value me!” Naaagh! Forget Trump, who a fart on the people ya see are just jealous, him jealous affie we identity He is de orange one, him jealous a we identity, scene! Dee Bo General: Asylum Seeker Asylum seeker, refugees. What kind of words are these? Refugee seeker, refugee asylum seeker, the voice I hear from every corner Corners filled with voices of anger, again no sleep tonight for the refugee seeker You might as well be a biblical leper, the would give you a place outside their border Still making sure the kept things in order At least they would keep their distance, a peaceful nights sleep without the violence Refugee asylum seeker, why do you come, for you there is no future It sounds like something I still remember, those ancient voices used to call us nigger My blood runs cold, my bones shudder, from the dark abusive days my parents still suffer I was also persistently, verbally, racially abused, we had to walk in crews, not ones and twos Refugee asylum seeker, no sleep tonight, watching winda Someone please tell me, what’s changed n the last fifty years? Racial abuse still brings violence and fears, with mother’s, children’s and father’s tears Please check your past and history, you might find a family of refugees, in the branches of your family tree On of those could well be me! GNia: The Stand, or Harambee! Hall and pull up, pull up, sickle and cease, hear the strain, hear the creak, after the maangmizi The black holocaust Do not release the gains that we hold Pull for freedom, pull for peace, pull, pull and don’t release Pull on your side, don’t release the gains and the strides Pull, through strains, sinews and back, through you thighs, squat down deep Take a hold, hold on to daily hope Come on! Cause help will surely give us a shove Pull selector, pull, stand firm, stand your ground, stand your ground Every time trouble comes around, take the stand, and don’t you allow it to bring you down Come, let we pull together Our noses are wide, wide, wide Our lips are thick, thick, thick Our hair is black, black, black I am beautiful, you are beautiful, we are all beautiful   Outro: This episode really was important to me. It has reconnected me to the music I heard around my childhood, but also in a strange way to my West Indian background, that for most of my life I’ve felt quite alienated from. So meeting June on the course and at the Outernational Sound System, Strictly Vinyl weekend, and also GNia and Donavan Christopher AKA Dee Boo General. Podcast Show Notes: Episode Intro: Hello everyone and welcome to the 21th episode. I am your host Tobi. This week is a special week, as I interview Dave. The interview took place on the same day as him interviewing me for his podcast, Getting Better Acquainted. He’s already publish his podcast and you’ll  find the link here. This week in the first part of his interview I’ll be speaking to him about everything he said in his introduction, including, his show, that’s also been turned into a podcast, and that’s now been turned into a book called, What about the Men: Mansplaining Masculinity. There will be a link to that podcast on the show notes here. There will also be a link to Unbound, the crowd funding publishing firm, through which Dave has brought out the book. We also talk about political oppression, in terms of gender, race and sexuality. We go on to talk about his new education through social media, where he follows people that are outside his cis, heterosexual, white middle class privilege that he confessed himself. Through following these people he was introduced to such writers as bell hooks, and Elizabeth Fiorenza. She came up with the term Kyriarchy, that’s a collective term for systems of oppression. So, please enjoy Outro: What a note to finish on. That all seems very current at the moment, particularly with films like Black Panther, and also Jordan Peele’s film, Get Out, and the Oscar Nominations that they’ve got. But also other issues about race and gender. It’s very prescient I think. So next week’s episode will be part two of Dave’s interview, where we talk further about systems of oppression, and we go on to talk about his father, and his other projects. The Babadook is a 2014 Australian psychological horror mother and son film, directed by Jennifer Kent, and a firm favourite of Mark Kermode. Part nightmarish fairytale, part exploration of grief, part creaky house horror The Babadook is a terrifying beautiful journey into madness making one of the most intriguing horror films of recent times. What it lacks in gore and blood it makes up for in tension and fear, think Don’t Look Now and The Shining, at times genuinely terrifying! Scores [supsystic-tables id='50'] Overall The Babadook scores 4.1 - pretty high and strongly recommended by Flixwatcher and Dave and Jen, rather surprising was that less love was shown from Twitter. Podcast Show Notes: Episode 20 Intro: Hello everyone, and welcome to the 20th episode of Tobi’s Arts Performed Podcast. I am your host Tobi. In this 2nd part of Seb’s interview we return to the ideas of live art verses performance art. Also we digress into the realm of social cleansing by what Seb calls the local government’s “art washing”, or co-opting grass roots art to justify gentrification. We also go back to his performance, La Santa Muerte, leading us back to issues of the place of capitalism in Mexico, and Mexican immigrants in America. As a brief reminder, Seb is performing at the Camden People’s Theatre on the 17th of March along with other artists & performers so please look up the facebook link here: Starting Bloks or The Camden People’s Theatre website for details.   Outro: Its always a pleasure talking with Seb about his work and his heritage. There’s so much I can learn about both and I will be returning at some point in the future to talk to him about his future projects, but please remember he is performing at the Camden people’s theatre in Starting Blocks, with other artists and performers. Next week’s episode is with fellow podcaster, story teller, and author of his new book Mansplaining Masculinity, Dave Pickering. This book is taken from a podcast he did, where; dressed in a purple dress, fedora hat, and holding his old dolphin toy, he tackles the subject of masculinity, directing his rhetoric toward men. His other podcasts include Getting Better Acquainted, a show he’s been doing for over 6 years. We also discuss some of the challenges to living Jewishly that came up in our interviews.   In the JewCL podcast, three Jewish students and their teacher chat about their research project into Jewish life at UCL, what they discovered, how they discovered it and what they think about it all. This show is presented by Cathy Elliott, Manya Eversley, Laura Katan and Sarai Keestra. It is produced and edited by Sarai Keestra, Laura Katan and Manya Eversley. We are grateful to the Arena Centre for Research-Based Education and Liberating the Curriculum at UCL, especially Teresa McConlogue and Mira Vogel, for giving us the idea and a small grant to do the research. If you've been listening to the first half of Season 1 of The Family Tree, you'll have heard podcast producer Dave Pickering investigating Mark Sullivan's mysterious disappearance by having conversations with his family. In Episode 6 everything changed. If you haven't heard the story so far, you might want to listen to the past episodes of the show before clicking play on this teaser, as it contains spoilers and suggests where this revelation might take Dave and what kind of answers he has uncovered so far. Mark Sullivan, who went missing 15 years ago, has been found dead. His body still has the arm he should have lost in a car accident and seems to have died eight years before he disappeared. Dave has found out that Mark isn't who everyone thought he was. Well, almost everyone. It seems that Reverend Beech knew more about this than he let on in the beginning... The Family Tree is a magical realist drama about family, belonging, change and identity.

This week we have four short stories from fantastic contributors. They all have to do with the beginning, middle, and/or end of a relationship. Huge thanks to Dave Pickering, Jonathan Harris, Whitney Jones, and Dave Huth for letting us use their stories on the show. Also thanks to Cowbird – a great storytelling site where three of this week's stories were originally published. Read more: http://ilikeyoupodcast.com/2012/07/75-start-to-finish/
