As part of our Summer ‘revival' replaying some key episodes from A Dog's Life's archives, we're joined by the Broadcasting legend that is Jenni Murray talking about her love of dogs. From her first  Corgi cross called Taffy, to her two Miniature Schnauzers called William and Mary.  After Jenni battled cancer, she persuaded her husband to accept her first Chihuahua named Butch, latterly joined by two more  little Chihuahuas Frieda and Madge. At the time of recording in Jenni's garden Butch was almost 16 and Jenni shares the journey with Butch as her rock through a particularly difficult time.  We discuss the impact of dogs and the irony they're defined as Man's Best Friend when in fact history concurs that women played the main role through the domestication process. We chat about the inevitable  and the harsh reality that dogs simply don't live long enough, underlining the fact that dogs define chapters in our lives. We chat about the responsibility a dog is and the commitment that dogs are that so many people have sadly underestimated through the pandemic boom in ownership, to whats considered a crisis with rescue centres overflowing with unwanted pooches.  We talk about vet bills and postulate that vets could be biting the hands that feeds them, which is interesting considering the current CMA investigation! We postulate about the origin of the Chihuahua down to the fact that both Caravaggio and Botticelli painted dogs that look very like a Chihuahua long before Columbus discovered America. We chat about the extreme discussion about dogs and cats being demonised as contributing to climate change by extreme environmentalists. We celebrate dogs and their huge impact on our lives. Sadly since this recording little Butch has passed, but his legacy will live on! [00:30] Is the Biden Crime Family Finally Being Exposed? (18 minutes) The FBI found no classified documents at Joe Biden's beach house, but it did take handwritten notes and other materials “for further review”—indicating that the investigation's purpose is bigger than the FBI initially stated. Nonprofit research group Marco Polo has produced a 630-page report about Hunter Biden's laptop, showing evidence of 459 different crimes. Hunter has finally admitted that the laptop is his, but he wants those who revealed the laptop's contents to be prosecuted. [18:00] The Washington Post Is Satire (8 minutes) Although the mainstream media abandoned objective reporting long ago, most news organizations have tried to keep up the facade of objectivity. The Washington Post abandoned that pretense this week, publishing an opinion piece by Leonard Downie Jr. claiming, “Newsrooms that move beyond ‘objectivity' can build trust.” [26:30] Daily Mail Condemns Pornography (9 minutes) A Daily Mail article by Jenni Murray exposes the serious problems caused by pornography, stating in the title that “All Porn Is Harmful … It Should Be Banned.” [35:30] ‘Thy Will Be Done' (20 minutes) Luke 11:2 tells us to pray that God's will be done “as in heaven, so in earth.” For God's will to be performed in our lives as it is in heaven, we must actively subject our will to God's.

The renowned broadcaster and writer Dame Jenni Murray is my guest for Episode 19. For 33 years the brilliant and calm voice of Woman’s Hour, Jenni talks powerfully about the myriad private crises she has faced. Her difficult relationship with her mother led to a lifelong battle with obesity, low self-esteem and, at her most desperate, a call to the Samaritans. In 2006 - the same week that she lost her mother, Jenni was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer resulting in a mastectomy. Jenni, who underwent drastic surgery in 2015 to lose weight, speaks candidly about these and other challenges in her life. And how she got through them and her brilliant book Fat Cow, Fat Chance. Jenni is patron of British research charity Breast Cancer Campaign and the Family Planning Association, Vice president of Parkinson’s UK and a supporter of Humanists UK.Jenni’s Crisis Cures:1. Dogs – I could never be without a dog. I love seeing them run around the park enjoying themselves. Then we cuddle up in front of the TV in the evening watching ‘Call My Agent’. I adore them.2. Reading crime novels – I love reading. Val McDermid & Sarah Paretsky are my two favourites. Sarah didn’t write for a while but now she’s back and Val always has something that keeps you up till 3am because you can’t put it down.3. New Forest Ice-cream. We often go to Lymington and there’s an ice-cream shop where you can get a fancy cone with two scoops – I always have one vanilla and the other ginger, and that can cheer me up anytime!Links:Breast Cancer Now : https://secure.breastcancernow.org/#/Jenni’s book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fat-Cow-Chance-Jenni-Murray/dp/0857525840Show Notes: To the millions who tuned into Jenni Murray on Woman’s Hour – she was the consummate professional, completely composed broadcaster. That she was so down at one point that the only way forward for her was to phone the Samaritans was an astonishing and poignant revelation and speaks, I hope, to one of the most resonant lessons from these conversations. That crisis really doesn’t care who you are. Jenni’s frank assessment of her near life-long struggle with obesity alongside the cruel and counter-productive fat-shaming she received - both from strangers and most shockingly from her own mother, was also compelling. Her ability to recognise its impact on her life and yet find forgiveness, demonstrates her extraordinary resilience. Finally, Jenni’s coping mechanism throughout her crises struck a chord with me. That through it all, keeping busy, taking charge of the practical issues ahead, was her key device to avoid the darkness. Another example of that simple idea – focus on the things you can affect – however small and it will ease the anxiety caused by those things that you can’t change.Stream/Buy ‘Allies’ by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bmSome Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk

Jenni Murray presents Woman’s Hour live from the Southbank Centre in London where the Women of the World Festival will be celebrating their 10th anniversary this weekend. Founded by Jude Kelly a decade ago, Jenni will be speaking to her about what inspired her to create an organisation that has involved two million people in 30 locations on six continents. What have been her stand out moments and where does the conversation need to go now? Initially offered for free following an Instagram challenge, #MeAndWhiteSupremacy is set across 28 days, with each day focusing on a different manifestation of white supremacy, including white privilege, cultural appropriation and tokenism. The workbook was downloaded by nearly ninety thousand people around the world in the space of six months, and is now a book. The woman behind the challenge, Layla Saad, joins Jenni to talk about why she’s passionate about helping people answer the question ‘how can I be a better ally to people of colour?’ Journalist and author, Yomi Adegoke joins them. We’ll hear from Eunice Mwende and Dajanaa 'Dexi' Stosic, two young activists working to empower young girls and women in Kenya and Serbia, two winners from 'With and For Girls,' who recognise girl-led and girl-centred groups and organisations around the world through an annual awards process. Jenni is joined by intimacy co-ordinator Ita O’Brien and actor Jemima Rooper. Why is a framework for intimate scenes in film, television and the theatre so important? Is it only to protect actors? And how much impact has the #TimesUp movement had since it started in January 2018? And Pretty Loud is the first Roma girl band. Traditionally, Roma women are homemakers, encouraged to leave school early and marry young. Blending rap and hip hop with their traditional Roma music, Pretty Loud are passionate about putting an end to stereotypes about both Roma people and women through their lyrics. They’ll be performing live from the Southbank Centre. Young children may know they can deceive others but their first lies are often more humorous than effective. Imagine the child who claims not to have eaten any cake while her mouth is still full, or who blames the family dog for drawing on the wall. But is lying actually an important sign other cognitive skills are also developing? As a child matures how does the nature and motivation behind lying change? And is it ever a cause for concern? In this week's Woman's Hour Parenting Podcast, Jenni Murray speaks to consultant child and educational psychologist, Laverne Antrobus.

Having to leave a child's bedside when they're being cared for in hospital can be a huge wrench. To help reduce the separation anxiety, a third of neonatal units in the UK are now using an app that helps parents stay in touch with their premature babies 24 hours a day. Doctors and nurses can send photos and video updates to parents when they can't be with their baby in hospital. So far, around five thousand families have used the service. Emma Barnett talks to Katharine Da Costa - a reporter for BBC South and Consultant Obstetrician Dr Maggie Blott. This year saw an unprecedented number of women winning major awards and prizes. What does being a winner feel like, and is it always good to win? Jenni Murray hears from the writer Edna O'Brien who won the David Cohen Prize for Literature. The award celebrates a writer who has broken down social and sexual barriers for women in Ireland and beyond, and moved mountains both politically and lyrically through her writing. Christmas is steeped in all sorts of tradition – but it’s not just trees, tinsel and turkey. Many families have their own festive rituals and the mere idea of doing things differently would make it feel… well, just not like Christmas. But why do we get so hung up on doing Christmas a certain way - even if it doesn't make us happy? What is it about human psychology that makes tradition so attractive? And if your family festivities make you want to run away and hide, what’s the best way to break the cycle? Jenni Murray talks to Dr Cristine Legare from the University of Texas at Austin about why rituals are an inevitable part of being human. We mark the centenary of women being able to enter the legal profession. The actress and writer Joanna Scanlan is known for Thick of It, Getting On, No Offence Puppy Love and most recently The Accident. But why do we get so hung up on doing Christmas a certain way - even if it doesn't make us happy? What is it about human psychology that makes tradition so attractive? If there’s one thing that most people expect on Christmas Day, it’s a Christmas dinner. From turkey and pigs in blankets to brussels sprouts and bread sauce it's a meal that many cooks dread. But according to historian Dr Annie Gray, it doesn't have to be that way. She says that if you take the long view, the only common thread from pre-Christian winter festivals to today is ‘light fire, eat meat, get drunk.’ The actual food is completely negotiable. We hear from listeners on both sides of the argument. John Humphrys has also attracted criticism. During a Today programme interview he suggested that referring to MP Jo Cox's murder as an act of terrorism could "muddy the waters". Listeners say he "muddied the waters" himself and was inaccurate. As this conversation confirms, the thought of ‘Woman’s Hour’ as a programme title would likely be unthinkable nowadays, but the BBC has wisely stuck with it since it launched on 7th October 1946. Why was the first presenter a man – Alan Ivimey? Why did WH move to mornings? How have the changes in women’s lives been reflected over the years? In this special New Year edition of the programme, Jenni Murray chews over the last seventy years of a programme which began on the Light Programme, then on Radio 2 before moving to Radio 4 in 1973. Jenni speaks to two former editors, Sally Feldman (1990-1997) & Jill Burridge (2002- Nov 2011); and two historians, Juliet Gardiner and Kate Murphy who also produced the show for over a decade until 2011.

Salad v Surgery: Treating Type 2 Diabetes

In June of this year, presenter of Radio 4's Woman's Hour, Jenni Murray, underwent an operation which removed 75 per cent of her stomach. A few months later, she has lost over 4 stones in weight and her symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes have gone into remission. Once a purely cosmetic procedure, bariatric surgery procedures like this have been described as the greatest advance in the history of treatment of Type 2 diabetes - so why aren't more patients being treated in this way? The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), which provides guidance and advice to the NHS, has said obese patients with diabetes should be rapidly assessed for surgery - but that's yet to happen. The treatment has been met with fierce criticism, especially from the tabloid press, which declared it undeserved: fat people should just stop eating instead of using up valuable resources to pay for vanity operations. Furthermore, Britain's leading diabetes charity, Diabetes UK, has also warned of the 'serious risks' posed by the procedure - even though the NHS has itself stated it is not more risky than a routine gall bladder operation. The irony here is that increasing the number of bariatric procedures could actually save the NHS millions of pounds, as patients are weaned off costly diabetes drugs - the NHS currently spends around £12bn a year treating the disease. With round 700 people diagnosed with diabetes in Britain every day, are we letting misguided morality get in the way of an opportunity to save money - and lives? CONTRIBUTORS INCLUDE: Jenni Murray, presenter Radio 4's Woman's Hour Simon O'Neill - Director of Health Intelligence, Diabetes UK Prof Roy Taylor, Professor of Medicine and Metabolism, Newcastle University Prof Francesco Rubino, Professor of Metabolic Surgery, King's College Hospital Prof Mark Baker, Director of the Centre for Clinical Practice, NICE Mr Andrew Mitchell, Consultant General Surgeon, Darlington Memorial Hospital Presenter: Adrian Goldberg Producer: Richard Fenton-Smith Note: A version of this programme was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June, 2014.
