Todos conocemos al John Williams que devolvió el sinfonismo al cine con “La guerra de las galaxias”, nos hizo volar con “Superman” y “E.T.”, segregar adrenalina acompañando en sus aventuras a “Indiana Jones” o temblar cuando entrábamos en la playa pensando que podríamos toparnos con algún “Tiburón”, pero no vamos a hablar del compositor, ganador de muchísimos premios a lo largo de los años, sino del orquestador, arreglista y sobre todo director de orquesta que nos ha regalado auténticas obras de colección. Os traemos una selección de suites y musicales de Broadway, a los que Williams hace brillar dirigiendo la Boston Pops entre 1980 a 1993, o trabajando en la adaptación para el cine como en el caso de ”Goodbye, Mr. Chips”, “Tom Sawyer” o “El violinista en el tejado”, con la que ganaría en 1972 su primer Oscar a la mejor adaptación musical para el cine. In this episode, we chat with Mike Zarate about which of life's lessons can be learned from Boubil and Schonberg's second opus - Miss Saigon!"THERE may never have been a musical that made more people angry before its Broadway debut than "Miss Saigon."Here is a show with something for everyone to resent -- in principle, at least. Its imported stars, the English actor Jonathan Pryce and the Filipino actress Lea Salonga, are playing roles that neglected Asian-American performers feel are rightfully theirs. Its top ticket price of $100 is a new Broadway high, sprung by an English producer, if you please, on a recession-straitened American public. More incendiary still is the musical's content. A loose adaptation of "Madama Butterfly" transplanted to the Vietnam War by French authors, the "Les Miserables" team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, "Miss Saigon" insists on revisiting the most calamitous and morally dubious military adventure in American history and, through an unfortunate accident of timing, arrives in New York even as the jingoistic celebrations of a successful American war are going full blast.So take your rage with you to the Broadway Theater, where "Miss Saigon" opened last night, and hold on tight. Then see just how long you can cling to the anger when confronted by the work itself. For all that seems galling about "Miss Saigon" -- and for all that is indeed simplistic, derivative and, at odd instances, laughable about it -- this musical is a gripping entertainment of the old school (specifically, the Rodgers and Hammerstein East-meets-West school of "South Pacific" and "The King and I"). Among other pleasures, it offers lush melodies, spectacular performances by Mr. Pryce, Miss Salonga and the American actor Hinton Battle, and a good cry. Nor are its achievements divorced from its traumatic subject, as cynics might suspect. El enorme éxito de Claude Michel Schönberg con los musicales, ha hecho que pase desapercibida para el gran público su faceta como compositor más allá de sus triunfos teatrales. Su inclinación por la música arrancaría  desde su infancia ya que como Schönberg recuerda desde bien niño, mientras otros niños daban regalos a sus madres por su cumpleaños, él le regalaba canciones que le había compuesto. Formó un conjunto musical en el que cantaba y tocaba el piano que le servía para ganar algún dinero con que pagar sus estudios, ya que la muerte de su padre cuando sólo tenía 14 años les había dejado en una situación bastante precaria. En una de sus actuaciones fue descubierto por un ejecutivo de la discográfica Pathé-Marconi EMI, que le ofreció un contrato como director artístico. Schonberg produjo canciones para artistas como Gilbert Becaud. Conoció al director de orquesta Franck Pourcel que le produjo su canción “Le premier pas” en 1974 y estuvo 16 semanas en el  número uno de éxitos, vendiendo más de un millón de copias. Posteriormente grabaría seis discos de larga duración con canciones suyas que le produciría Franck Pourcel. Hemos seleccionado alguno de aquellos temas cantados en francés por el propio compositor en 1974 y otros adaptados al inglés y cantados por Russell Watson en 2013, así como canciones de éxito que compuso para la canadiense Martin St. Claire. También trabajó para el cine escribiendo la música para las películas L’école est finie (1979) y Le caviar rouge (1985). Terminaremos con dos amplias secciones musicales de sus ballets para el Northern Ballet Theatre Company "Wuthering Heights" en 2001 y en 2011 "Cleopatra". Claude Michel Schonberg y Alain Boublil tras estrenar "LOS MISERABLES" en Londres y de nuevo con Cameron MackIntosh se embarcaron en "MISS SAIGON", un musical que se convertiría en uno de sus mayores éxitos,  completamente actual denunciando los desastres de la guerra y la desgracia de las víctimas que deben huir de la muerte abandonando su hogar, sin más esperanza en el horizonte, que la de sobrevivir. Con una partitura en la que combinan baladas con temas potentes para subrayar la hermosísima historia de amor con la brutalidad de la guerra o los desfiles militares, consiguen contarnos una historia donde todo el texto es cantado y controlan perfectamente la emoción en el patio de butacas, combinando escenas íntimas con otras espectaculares, dando un acabado redondo al musical que mezcla sabiamente romanticismo, humor, drama, denuncia, sacrificio y ternura. As a small boy growing up in Brittany he would play the piano and compose pieces for his mother. He dreamt of getting away from his little village on the French coast and going to live in Paris and compose operas.To please his mother Claude-Michel went to University to study mathematics, but whilst he was there he formed a band and began writing songs. They caught the attention of an EMI A&R man which resulted in two singles and a job for Claude-Michel as an A&R assistant. Claude-Michel enjoyed a brief career as a pop star, when he had a huge hit in France with Le Premier Pas (The first date) - a song that is still played on the radio there today. During this time he had met lyricist Alain Boublil who had been impressed with his pop songs and both were keen to take on a bigger project. The result was La Révolution Française which did moderately well in France. During this time he had met lyricist Alain Boublil who had been impressed with his pop songs and both were keen to take on a bigger project. The result was La Révolution Française which did moderately well in France. The duo perfected their skills when they went on to create the hugely successful musicals Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre.
