This week's Empire Podcast (episode 664 if you're keeping score!) is more packed with goodness than your average Easter egg. Not only do Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and Alex Godfrey get into a discussion about what exactly makes a musical a musical (along with an impromptu visit to a certain mountain), but they tackle the week's movie news, including the revelation that the Oscars will finally have a Best Stunt Design category (note: this was recorded, due to the Easter holidays, before the new Fantastic Four trailer and Star Wars movie news. We'll get to those next week), and review Ryan Coogler's Sinners, Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza's Warfare, and the new Steve Coogan film, The Penguin Lessons. And if that weren't enough, our guest egg overcracketh, as Chris sits down with Steve Coogan and co-star Jonathan Pryce, [21:13 - 33:16 approx] and Sinners' genius composer, Ludwig Göransson, [1:31:25 - 1:45:01 approx] while Alex has an engrossing chat with Warfare's directors, Ray Mendoza and the other Alex G. [52:19 - 1:07:55 approx] And finally, there's an excerpt from Chris' wonderful spoiler special chat with The Monkey director, Osgood Perkins. [1:46:16 - 1:57:31 approx] Our full spoiler special for that movie is now up in our spoiler special feed. Phew, told you it was a packed show. Enjoy!

William Tell rounds up some big theatre names (Jonathan Pryce, Rafe Spall, Sir Ben Kingsley) to back up Danish star Claes Bang (TV's Bad Sisters) as the famous Swiss archer and rebel. It's time to open your mind and let your imagination run wild, as we cover The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, the near-perfect film from Terry Gilliam, starring John Neville, Sarah Polley, Eric Idle, Winston Dennis, Charles McKeown, Jack Purvis, Jonathan Pryce, Uma Thurman, and the incredible Oliver Reed! (Oh, and a rather weird cameo from Robin Williams.)
Early in 14th century Switzerland was under the control of their far more powerful neighbour, Hapsburg Austria. In the small town of Aldorf in the canton of Uri, which is at the centre of Switzerland, near Lake Lucern and the city of Zurich there lived a brutal Austrian governor, Albrecht Gessler. Gessler hated the Swiss, a proud and rebellious people, and to remind them of their subjugation he placed his hat on a large post in the middle of the town, and demanded the Swiss bow when passing. William Tell, an expert crossbowman and hunter, refused. Furious, Gessler set Tell a challenge. Shoot an apple off his son's head, from 100 yards, as the wretched child was tied to the post or the boy would be executed. Tell reluctantly agreed, and with a miraculous shot he succeeded, and so began the revolt against Austria and Switzerland's journey to independence for which it is known today, as well as dubious banking practises. Joining the podcast is the director Nick Hamm who has made a film of William Tell, starring Claes Bang, Ben Kingsley, Jonathan Pryce, Golshifteh Farahani, Rafe Spall, Ellie Bamber and Connor Swindells. Forrest, Conan Neutron, Kristina Oakes, and Kt Baldassaro start off dystopian december with Terry Gilliam's 1985 Brazil Starring a truly impressive cast, Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Michael Palin, Kim Greist, Katherine Helmond, Bob Hoskins, and Ian Holm. Terry Gilliam paints a bleak picture of a society where every day citizens are completely complacent and distracted by Hyper-Consumerist spectacle and an endless multi-layered bureaucracy holds totalitarian control. Inspired by the idea of George Orwell's 1984, Former Monty Python artist turned auteur Terry Gilliam shows a state apparatus both absurdist and terrifying... and the story of one man who hasn't completely lost his humanity. #brazil #terrygilliam #montypython #robertdeniro #dystopian #dystopianfuture #december #moviepodcast #filmpodcast #movielovers #ianholm #britishfilm #criterioncollection #criterion Watch KT Baldassaro & Jared Skolnick's Girl in the Basement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcn2Q57VXEQ Join our discord: https://discord.gg/aVAjz7qn The Movie Night Extravaganza Patreon helps us keep the show going.. become a Patron and support the show!! https://patreon.com/MovieNightExtra Conan Neutron has music available from Conan Neutron & The Secret Friends https://neutronfriends.bandcamp.com OR if you want to become a Protonic Reversal patron: https://patreon.com/protonicreversal
All November we gotta RAISE THE CURTAIN & BELT THE CHORUS! It's musical films all month long and today's discussion got a lot of news and attention during its production back in 1996. MTV, still in the music video game back then, helped push this beloved Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber project because its star is none other the the iconic pop diva, Madonna. Stage purists of “EVITA” always have Patti Lupone's vibrant renditions in their heart but for the film adaptation by Alan Parker in 1996, Madonna really wanted the role and felt a connection to the beloved First Lady of Argentina. Webber even wrote a new song for the film that helped define a point in Madonna's career. The press helped make EVITA a hit, but how does it hold up amongst the great musical adaptations when we look back? I'll just say that Antonio Banderas looked like Orson Welles opposite Madonna who had her moments but lacked a lot of expression. Also, are the Argentines annoyed that Jonathan Pryce (a Brit) played Juan Peron since that whole Falklands thing went down? This really made us want to get some South American history books at least. This is Bob's first exposure to the Andrew Lloyd Webber style. It's a lot to take in for a man who has only seen six musicals up to this point. We will see how “EVITA” fares all these years later. In 1983, Walt Disney Productions released an interesting experiment: A children's horror movie set in an old-timey American town menaced by an evil carnival, with a screenplay adapted by Ray Bradbury himself from his classic novel. Doesn't sound very Disney, does it? It's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES.

Hello! Welcome to another edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. This episode is really personal for me, not only because Rupert Wainwright has been a good friend of mine for 25 years, but because Stigmata is the reason we met. While working on Divine Rites: The Story of Stigmata, a documentary about the film and the phenomenon, I wrote and pitched to Rupert a pilot script designed to be a spin-off of the film, using the Congregation of the Causes of Saints as a kind of X-Files show in which our hero would travel the world investigating mysteries and miracles. Although we didn't end up making the show, Rupert liked the script enough to give me a shot at writing a film for him, based on his own idea, which we almost got to make with Matthew McConaughey about 20 years ago, and we've been working on projects together ever since – and more importantly, we've enjoyed an enduring friendship which has outlasted our Dante-esque trudges through Development Hell. Revisiting Stigmata for its 25th anniversary, I was delighted to discover that the film really holds up, which is a testament both to Rupert's skill as a director and the casting of some very talented and committed actors, including Patricia Arquette, Gabriel Byrne, Jonathan Pryce and our mutual friend Rade Serbedzija. Massive thanks to Rupert for lending his time and his memories to our 40th episode. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. “Words are the new weapons, satellites the new artillery.” Jonathan Pryce's villain Elliot Carver says to James Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies right before he manipulates a GPS signal to make a British destroyer begin a confrontation with the Chinese military, may seem like the realm of pop culture; the idea of manipulating GPS signals and disrupting communications has long been a staple of spy thrillers like our favorite James Bond films. But while these scenarios make for thrilling entertainment, the reality is far more complex and consequential. The invisible threads of satellite technology puppet our every move, from the ships traversing vast oceans to the cars navigating city streets. At the heart of this intricate web lies the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), a constellation of satellites that provide precise positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) information to countless devices across the globe. Recent news stories have highlighted the vulnerabilities of GNSS, from the possibility of signal jamming and spoofing to the potential for widespread disruption in the event of a satellite failure. This isn't just in movies, a recent book by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius about a Russian space scientist who finds evidence of a system kill switch, that can turn off the Global Positioning System, on which every aspect of U.S. communications, transportation, and our economic lifeline depends on. These risks are not just the stuff of fiction; they have real-world implications for our increasingly interconnected society. Fortunately, advancements in alternative positioning and timing systems offer a promising solution. By harnessing the power of ground-based infrastructure, these technologies provide a resilient and secure alternative to satellite-based navigation, ensuring that our critical systems remain operational even in the face of adversity. How can Microchip Technology help in securing our critical infrastructure, and help world leaders chart a course towards a future where the doomsday scenarios remain firmly in the realm of fiction? After largely agreeing about GoldenEye, Michael, Rob, and Karen are divided once again. We differ about the enjoyability of Tomorrow Never Dies, Pierce Brosnan's second turn as James Bond with Jonathan Pryce as an over-the-top villain, Michelle Yeoh as a butt-kicking rival agent, Teri Hatcher as the never-before-revealed love of Bond's life, and a heart-breaking tale of two theme songs.

Holy moly, this is a good movie! It's an especially good movie to study for anyone writing a quiet, character-driven story. THE WIFE originally aired as Episode 4 of Season 6 when Melanie was studying stakes and I was studying empathy. But honestly, this is one of those rare films that novelists (and memoirists!) can study to learn just about any storytelling principle. -V.*Programming Note: In next week's episode we review the movie NYAD, not GONE BABY GONE as indicated in the intro. When you're getting into the concepts of SOME BULLSHIT TOMORROWs many classic literary interpretations have stood the test of time. It's felt “1984” a few times this month and today's selection is no different but perhaps it feels a little closer in its mediocre society. Things are cluttered, disconnected and cartoonishly inept. Life lived under paperwork and forms in drab buildings, some of them you hope you never see inside of. The best of your reality is in your dreams but when the faces in your dreams appear in reality then you just might see a chance to rise above the drab world. A creative tour de force by Terry Gilliam early in his “post Python” film career, it remains a visually impressive work of humor and devastation that stands out amongst his unique filmmaking career. When talking about dystopia on film it's hard not to include Gilliam's 1985 film “BRAZIL” starring Jonathan Pryce, Kim Greist, Robert De Niro, Ian Holm, Michael Palin, Bob Hoskins & Katherine Helmond to name a few. There is some good in this world. Good men who want to help. Good people who want to care for their neighbors. Can they make it in this very familair ultra-propagandized society? God willing, return I will to Old Brazil. Drew is back from his hiatus from the show and it's time once again to talk movies! Kevin's pick is the classic Disney movie The Aristocats from 1970. It's one that we both grew up loving and was a joy to revisit. Drew's choice is one that we both were unfamiliar with from 1985, the sci-fi/comedy film, Brazil starring Jonathan Pryce, Robert DeNiro and more. We appreciate you guys who still tune in, thanks a lot and have a great week! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/distortedminds/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/distortedminds/support
