What exactly should we be looking for in our cylinders? Plus torque tales, making TBO, and overzealous manufacturers. Email podcasts@aopa.org for a chance to get on the show. Join the world's largest aviation community at aopa.org/join Full show notes below: Jared asks what he should be looking for with his borescope. He's seen bad valves and what that looks like, but he's also hoping to see what bad scoring and other things. Colleen stresses to focus on what goes wrong with a cylinder, and being able to identify those attributes. Things like broken rings, piston pins, detonation signature, etc are identifiable, and can be examined. Paul said rust is always something to look for, but most cylinders have some. Knowing how much and why it's there is what matters. Mike said rust would cause him to consider the camshaft on an airplane in a pre-buy situation, for example. Chad has a new Cessna turbo 206. He wants to be sure to get to TBO and then some. Paul said the one thing he needs to do is fly as often as possible. He is flying 400 hours a year, which the hosts love. He asks if he can fly a maximum continuous power, and the hosts agree that he can, so long as his cylinder head temperatures are within spec. The book tells Chad to lean to peak turbine inlet temperature, and not to run lean of peak. He wants to know if this is a real threat or a hollow one. Once again, the hosts agree that it's a hollow threat, and that he should operate lean of peak if he can. They also discuss the myth of turbo cooldowns. Mike said George Braly instrumented a turbo and found that it actually got hotter as it sat on the ramp “cooling down.” Serrhel is sick of the Continental maintenance schedule. He has a Cirrus that is under warranty, and he's required to do the maintenance as scheduled. At 300 hours an injector cleaning was required, and only a few months later, the injectors had to be cleaned again during the annual. Cirrus and Continental required it, even after some pushback. Paul said manufacturers don't buy into the probability of maintenance induced failures or in the concept of reliability centered maintenance. The discuss the reasons why manufacturers think this way, and Mike said a conversation with a factory representative taught him that they basically don't trust GA pilots and owners to maintain aircraft at a high level. Patrick is throwing down a challenge to Paul. He said Paul always stresses that when tightening case through-bolts, you torque simultaneously with torque wrenches on both sides at the same time. Old Continental videos say the same, but the video shows the technicians only torquing on one side at a time. Despite the guidance, Paul said it doesn't make sense to put a torque wrench on both sides at the same time. Mike said if you put a torque wrench on both sides, one side will be torqued dry and hit the pre-load spec too early. Mike and Paul then get into a debate about how the logbook entry should be made when if you decide not to follow Continental's advice. Patrick further mentions that the Continental service manual doesn't say it should be simultaneously.

Oil and gas operators have always known that surplus equipment is part of doing business. Projects get cancelled. Long-lead items are over-ordered. Assets are parked in yards, warehouses, and sea cans "just in case." Over time, those decisions quietly turn into idle capital sitting on balance sheets, often forgotten until space runs out or write-downs loom. What's changed is the cost of ignoring it. Tight capital markets, tariffs, long lead times, and supply chain friction make surplus harder to justify. At the same time, operators face pressure to improve capital efficiency, demonstrate sustainability, and recover value from assets that still have useful life. Leaving equipment to rust is no longer neutral. It is a choice with a price tag. There is, however, a better way. With the right data, photos, documentation, and market reach, surplus assets can be exposed to real demand, often well beyond the local buyer network. Digital marketplaces create price discovery, expand the buyer pool across industries and geographies, and turn forgotten inventory into cash, faster than expected. In this episode, I'm joined by Xochi Schumann, an account executive in the Energy Division at Liquidity Services. We talk about why surplus builds up, why data really is money, how digital marketplaces like AllSurplus change recovery outcomes, and why many operators are discovering real value hiding in plain sight. #Surplus #InvestmentRecovery #AssetRecovery #CircularEconomy #OilAndGas #FleetManagement #AssetDisposition

He followed those books with a trilogy that included Titan, Wizard and Demon, then went to Hollywood for seven years. This Probabilities interview was recorded on July 17, 1992 when he returned to the field with his novel, Steel Dreams, first of two novels set in the Eight Worlds universe of his earlier work; the sequel, The Golden Globe, was published in 1998.. Sadly, 22 vets per day commit suicide, approximately 67,500 vets are homeless and thousands struggle with everyday life after service. What we hope to accomplish is providing a fun place to gather that will have a similar feel to the conversations that happen at the VFW or American Legion between vets. Since the latest generations of vets are not really going to these places anymore, we are making it happen online. We believe that the sense of community will help some who struggle, while providing stories about the good times that we can all laugh at!An additional part of this show is capturing the oral history of the military over the past few decades, so if you happen to know a veteran who served during WW2, Korean War or Vietnam eras, we would love to hear from them. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Jack Arnold (1916-1992). Film Director (“Creature from the Black Lagoon” et al), 1980 Jack Arnold, who died at the age of 75 in 1992, was the 1950s master of the science fiction film. Among the films he directed were It Came From Outer Space, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature, Tarantula, and The Incredible Shrinking Man. The Probabilities crew – Richard A. Lupoff, Lawrence Davidson and Richard Wolinsky – received a small stipend from a science fiction convention and flew to Los Angeles to interview Jack Arnold in his office at Universal Studios. The interview is undated but was recorded in around 1980, give or take a year. It Came from Outer Space, along with two film noirs, were released in 1953, Creature from the Black Lagoon in 1954 and Revenge of the Creature in 1955. The first western, The Man from Bitter Ridge along with Tarantula and his work on This Island Earth also came from 1955. The rest of the westerns, along with The Incredible Shrinking Man and the Peter Sellers classic The Mouse That Roared, came between 1956 and 1959. After that, he directed a couple more A pictures, as he called them, but his primary work moved to television, and from then until his retirement in 1984, he was constantly working on projects for the small screen, interspersed with the occasional film. Getting restorative sleep and putting an end to back pain are both good reasons to opt for quality bedding. And if another reason was needed: on average, we spend 7-9 hours in bed every night and around a third of our lives sleeping in total. The problem is it can sometimes be like diving into a sea of options when it comes to mattresses. The most common type is the foam mattress, which adapts to all body shapes. What are the other types of mattresses? Should I go for soft or firm? What if I have back problems? How often should I be changing my mattress? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! November 8, 2025, a small SUV drives up to the Carnival cruise ship docked at Port Miami. The thick letters on the side of the car read: MIAMI DADE COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER FBI agents are seen bringing what appears to be a cadaver stretcher off the ship. Just 24 hours before docking, in a cabin where three step-siblings were rooming together, a crew member finds a dead body. An 18 year old girl named Anna Kepner, hidden underneath a mattress amongst blankets and life jackets. The youngest sibling is seemingly ruled out and the most likely person of interest appears to be her 16 year old step brother...Whom Anna's father and stepmother seem to be defensively ‘protective' of. This is the ongoing case of Anna Kepner's murder. Full show notes available at RottenMangoPodcast.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A small monthly pledge makes you a Supporter, and the Science of Sport Community awaits!Show notesToday on the Spotlight, we kick off with a chat about whether your running shoes are causing injuries (4:24). This, after a former elite runner has sued Nike for an injury she claims was the result of running in carbon fiber plated footwear. Ross and Gareth talk about the complexity of running injuries, why proving a single cause is a near-impossible task, but why the claim is not necessarily a total no-hoper, given what we know about injury and these particular shoes. We look back at some precedents, sort of, where shoe companies have settled after claims, but with some very important subtle differences. We then shift to Track and Field for a pair of stories (32:29). World Athletics crowned their Athletes of the Year this week, with Mondo Duplantis and Sydeny McLaughlin-Levrone taking the overall honours. We throw some praise Mondo's way, and not because he's virtually unbeatable and playing with the World Record. We also discuss Grand Slam Track, which is surely in its final days after the depth of its latest financial hole were announced, and Track and Field Athletics, whose supposed demise may have been greatly exaggerated (37:23)We finish with a couple of contact sports stories. Ross co-authored a paper he thinks could transform how Rugby Union handles contact training to minimize head impacts (47:40). And we spotlight listener Petulant Skeptic, whose insights on infections and hand-washing in hospitals shed light on Guardian caps and reducing concussion risk (58:39).Oh, And Finally, Ross has a tale about a mattress that will do things you simply won't believe. Cruising offers many challenges. But it shouldn't feel like a slog. And if it does, maybe a few simple changes will make it more pleasurable. Summary All beginning cruisers look forward to the best part of the lifestyle. But living on a boat is also a challenge. The difference between having fun and a slog can be a few specific changes. Based on seventeen years of living aboard, I recommend the following: Get good rest. Comfortable bedding, good ground tackle, and the ability to stay cool will all contribute to a restful night's sleep. Have enough power so you can meet your needs and not feel restricted. Have reliable internet so you can be as connected as you want to be. Make meal prep easier by investing in quality equipment. Agree on standard operating procedures. Automatic habits are easier than reconsidering every move. Divide labor fairly. Everyone needs to contribute. Make sure that every crew member's needs are met. Spend time in your cruising community. Focusing on these goals will ensure cruising stays fun.
