Ben Elton's career began in Britain's alternative comedy scene in the 1980s - and over the last 44 years, he's since built a name for himself. He's become a recognisable name in the world of stand-up comedy and he's also written many notable works, including The Young Ones and Blackadder. He also created musicals We Will Rock You and The Beautiful Game with Andrew Lloyd Webber. Ahead of his Authentic Stupidity tour coming to New Zealand, he explained why he felt compelled to return to stand-up comedy "Stand-up is the only area of my work as a comic artist which is entirely subjective. The new youth phrase is 'to stand in your truth'...and I'm standing in my truth." LISTEN ABOVE OR WATCH BELOW See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bohemian Rhapsody was released on November 3, 2018, and the fascinating story behind one of the most influential groups ever continues to be unbelievably popular. However, some things shown in the movie kinda differ from the truth. TIMESTAMPS: The creators built an exact copy of Wembley Stadium for the movie 1:05 The Pepsi glasses you can see on the piano weren't a product placement 1:39 Queen didn't have any doubts about performing at Live Aid 2:17 Some of the vocal recordings for the film were done by Marc Martel 2:58 Mike Myers had previously appeared in a film listening to “Bohemian Rhapsody” 3:41 Queen didn't break the contract with EMI 4:20 Bohemian Rhapsody should've been directed by someone else 4:45 Freddie became a part of the band through Tim Staffell 5:12 “We Will Rock You” was written much earlier 6:04 Freddie Mercury wasn't the only one who tried to go solo 6:39 Freddie Mercury didn't know he was sick until 1987 7:29 The official soundtrack includes previously unreleased songs 8:24 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: The director of Live Aid was present during filming and was pleasantly surprised with how precise the reconstruction was. Some people pointed out that the creators added some very visible Pepsi product placement in the movie during the Live Aid scene. If you watch the original performance, you'll see these glasses on Mercury's piano too. But the true story is way less poetic than that. The pause in Queen's work didn't last for more than a year. Plus, in February 1984 they released a new album called The Works. Several years ago, Marc sent his cover versions of Queen songs to guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. They were amazed by the similarities between Marc's voice and Freddie's. The actor, famous for his many roles, including Austin Powers, already listened to and even sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” in character in the movie Wayne's World! Queen did have some disagreements with EMI during the Night at the Opera era. Still, everything seemed to turn out all right since the band released many more albums with this label. The first person to take the director's chair was Bryan Singer, and he was actively working on the movie almost from the start. But 20th Century Fox decided to fire him. In the movie, we see Freddie meeting Roger and Brian after a concert when their frontman, Tim Staffell, decides to leave the project. But it wasn't exactly like that in real life. In real life, “We Will Rock You” appeared in Queen's hit album News of the World back in 1977 — several years before the actual concert. Pretty much every participant of Queen was trying to make their own solo albums work! The official soundtrack of the movie contains not only several famous songs we all know by heart but another 11 recordings that had not been released! Welcome to the Season Finale Of Encore! What would you say is the catchiest song of all time? You know that one earworm that you hear once and then for the rest of the day it plays over and over in your head? Well, according to researchers at St. Andrews University in Scotland a song needs to have five things to make it an earworm: surprise, predictability, rhythmic repetition, melodic potency and, most importantly, the listener must be receptive to the creation on a basic level. In their study they determined the catchiest song of all time is Queen's “We Will Rock You,” which alone can be identified by its rhythm. I'm sure you've attended some sporting event and stomped or clapped that song without even singing a note. It's catchy, there's no denying it and these people are actual scientists sure, but have they ever heard a song by the name of “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen? Because that wins my vote. And I'm not alone. Justin Bieber agrees with me. He once tweeted:  “Call me maybe by Carly Rae Jepson is possibly the catchiest song I've ever heard lol” How can anyone argue with the Biebs! This is the true story of the iconic Carly Rae Jepsen song 'Call Me Maybe' - with newly unearthed audio from Carly Rae Jepsen herself! Encore will return for season 5 in October 2024!

Sophie shares her journey from a passionate, young dancer in the UK to becoming a triple-threat performer gracing the stages of London's West End and New York's Broadway. She opens up about her early obsession with dance, recounting how she would ask her mom to book a local church hall for extra practice and record her rehearsals so she could critique herself. This early dedication set the stage for her successful career, which began in the West End and eventually led her to Broadway. She looks back on her audition process for “Moulin Rouge!” on a Zoom call during the pandemic, where she had to convince director Alex Timbers that she could bring a fresh, fierce energy to the role of Nini. She also touches on her transition into TV and film, celebrating her first non-musical acting role in the UK soap “Casualty” as a major milestone that showcased her versatility beyond dance and singing. Performing in a show like “Moulin Rouge!”, she finds joy in being part of a close-knit cast that becomes like a second family. She discusses the differences between working in the UK and the US, especially the accessibility and financial challenges performers face. With a deep love for performing, Sophie imparts a piece of advice to aspirants, encouraging them to stretch themselves in areas where they aren't as strong and to live a balanced life that includes fun and downtime.  Sophie Carmen-Jones has appeared in several West End productions and UK tours, including “Moulin Rouge!”, “Jersey Boys”, “Wicked”, “We Will Rock You”, and “Chicago”. Her film and TV credits include the live-action films of “The Little Mermaid”, “Cats”, “Aladdin”, and “Beauty and the Beast”, and she recently made her Broadway debut in the Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge!” as Nini.  Connect with Sophie: Instagram: @sophiecarmenjones Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support the podcast on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast YouTube: YouTube.com/TheTheatrePodcast Threads, Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast TikTok: @thetheatrepodcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com My personal Instagram: @alanseales Learn more about your ad choices. It's Claire Delaney who joins Alexa this week to give us a tour behind the scenes of working on the ITV show ‘Mamma Mia! I have a dream', the search for Sophie and Sky. Claire is a vocal coach with a private business and also teaches at UK Drama School Italia Conti. She initially trained in Opera, performing at the likes of the Royal Albert Hall, and now works with singers of all skill levels from beginners to West End professionals. To celebrate the winners of ‘Mamma Mia! I have a dream' and their West End debut, Claire is here to give us the gossip on how she landed this TV job, what her role entailed on the program, and how we can help our theatre performers navigate auditions.  KEY TAKEAWAYS "Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream'' premiered on ITV in October 2023. The program followed the quest for two fresh and undiscovered talents in musical theatre, aiming to cast them in the roles of Sophie Sheridan and Sky Ramand for the West End rendition of the musical "Mamma Mia!". If you or one of your students are thinking about applying for a TV show like this in the future, Claire believes you need to be strong in the following areas: story telling, working collaboratively, creating chemistry, having the endurance to perform 9 shows a week, and not taking yourself too seriously. In previous "Mamma Mia!" shows, it was understood that straight tone was desired over vibrato. However this more traditional approach didn't appear to be the case in the TV show. Claire loves vibrato because it adds colour and a feeling of release in the voice. As a teacher you need to make sure your student can do both so they can use whichever they think is right for them. BEST MOMENTS ‘I feel like having worked on TV now it adds to my credibility' ‘It's not Shakespeare, it's pure entertainment and just joyous' ‘The key to any audition is to do your background development on the character' ‘My best advice is just be cheeky and ask, the worst anyone can say is no and not everybody will say no'   EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: https://www.delaneycoaching.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @Claire.delaney.coach Tik Tok: Claire_TheVocalCoach Relevant Links & Mentions: Fiona McDougal: https://fionamcdougal.com/ London School of Musical Theatre: https://www.lsmt.co.uk/ Italia Conti Arts: https://www.italiaconti.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 91 How to Help Prepare Singers for Drama School Auditions with Michael Vickers Songs mentioned: Luck Be a Lady from Guys and Dolls; Trustfall by Pink; Somebody To Love from We Will Rock You; Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer; Shivers by Ed Sheeran; Night Fever from Saturday Night Fever Vocology in Practice: https://www.vocologyinpractice.org/ ABOUT THE GUEST Claire Delaney is a professional voice coach and currently teaches at Italia Conti. In 1980, Queen was on top of the world. Their eighth album The Game went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Another One Bites the Dust" topped the Hot 100. At the time, late director Saul Swimmer approached the band about making a possible concert film. When Queen performed at the Montreal Forum in Canada in 1981 on November 24 and 25, Swimmer captured the band in all their essence for Queen Rock Montreal. Originally released in 1981, the film has been digitally remastered for the first time for IMAX and will run for a limited time from January 18 through 21. The film showcases Queen at their apex with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon performing through a ferocious 26-song setlist featuring "We Will Rock You," "Somebody To Love," and the live debut of "Under Pressure," along with "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Are The Champions," and many more. In 2007, nearly 30 years since the concert film premiered, the live album recording from the Montreal Forum dates, Queen Rock Montreal, was also released. In the late 1970s, Walt "Wally" Versen was recruited along with five of his fellow football players from Northwestern College to work as the band's security on their tour. "For the six of us, an already extraordinary journey took an unbelievable veer into the world of biggest-time rock and roll," said Verson, who has remained friends with Brian May and is executive producing the upcoming documentary Play the Game: A Jock N Roll Story. The security guard was also at the Montreal concert in '81 and captured never-before-seen images of the band from his point of view backstage. Versen also played into Mercury's stage theatrics. Mercury would oftentimes come on stage on the shoulders of security guards dressed as Superman and other characters in costume. Dressed as Darth Vader, Versen once carried Mercury out on his shoulders.

Fearless with Jason Whitlock
Ep 351 | Skip Bayless & Shannon Sharpe Represent Sports TV's descent into Hip Hop Culture

“Fearless” brings an ugly reality to light with today's discussion. The public beef between Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe reflects the consequence of sports television's embrace of “tha culture.” That's short for hip-hop culture: the art, style of dress, and mindset associated with popular commercial rap music. “Tha culture” foments violence, chaos, petty beefs, the prioritization of emotion over logic, and the justification of an immoral pursuit of money, power, and fame. Six years ago, Fox Sports 1 executive Jamie Horowitz, Skip Bayless, and Shannon Sharpe dove headfirst into “tha culture” with their debate show “Undisputed.” Horowitz paid rapper Lil Wayne to befriend Bayless and create a theme song for the show. Horowitz envisioned “Undisputed” as the synagogue for the marriage of sports and hip-hop. Since then, DJ Khaled's “All I Do Is Win” is now what Queen's “We Will Rock You” was in the 1980s and '90s. The change in genre provoked a cultural shift that has impacted everything around sports, including the broadcasters. Jason brings in “Fearless” soldier Royce White to discuss this influence and the embarrassing reactions to Skip Bayless' harmless tweet. “Fearless” contributor Steve Kim later joins the conversation with some advice to the offended. “At the end of the day, if you let Skip Bayless bother you that much — to perturb you to that level in your mind — then you are weak-minded.” Plus, Garrett Bush, co-host of “The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show,” went viral for expressing what he felt was being ignored by the mainstream media coverage of Damar Hamlin. In his emotional take, he accuses the NFL of making unfair contracts with its players. Jason disagrees and invites Garrett Bush to “Fearless” to hear him out. We want to hear from the Fearless Army!!
