In its 2024 report, the South African Fraud Prevention Service revealed that identity theft skyrocketed by 400% in South Africa between April 2023 and April 2024. SAFPS adds that out of the 8521 formal cases opened at the Ombudsman for Banking Services in 2023, 43.47% were categorised as fraud. This is part of a rising trend in scams where fraudsters use false identities or intercept the secure identification process to steal funds and data. The issue of identity fraud has come to the fore following the investigation into the citizenship of former Miss SA contestant Chidimma Adetshina. Adetshina, who withdrew from the Miss SA pageant, had claimed to be born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a Zulu mother with "strong Mozambican roots". The investigation has raised questions about the authenticity of Adetshina's identity and the department's handling of the matter. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber and his departmental officials updated Parliament on a range of issues this morning. It was revealed that the visa applications of the 95 Libyan nationals arrested at an alleged military training camp in Mpumalanga recently, were fraught with irregularities Schreiber initially addressed the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs on the lack of proper records management in the country, and how this opens SA up to criminality. It was then revealed how this lack of digital transformation and proper record keeping is at the core of the department's problems. This became clear as the department unpacked how the issue around these Libyan nationals and the Miss SA saga unfolded. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC News reporter, Abra Barbier.

But her participation has been rejected by some, questioning her nationality. She was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a mother who has Mozambican roots. The Patriotic Alliance, a party led by South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts & Culture, Gayton McKenzie, says it's planning to interdict Chidimma from participating in the contest. But there are many others who've thrown their weight behind the 23-year-old. They include political parties like Rise Mzansi and the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania. The Department of Home Affairs says it has found prima facie evidence that the woman registered as the mother of Miss SA contestant, Chidimma Adetshina, may have committed identity fraud and identity theft when registering Adetshina. In a statement released last night, Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber says Adetshina could not have participated in the alleged unlawful actions of her mother, as she was an infant at the time, adding that an innocent South African mother suffered and could not register her child as a result of the alleged identity fraud.
