Originally aired as episode 198 on March 22, 2022. Trigger warning: This episode contains discussion of eating disorders. At the age of 25, Eva Noblezada is a two time Tony Award nominee, a Grammy Award winner, and a WhatsOnStage Award winning actress and singer. She starred as Kim in Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon when she was 17 years old, and shortly after played Eponine in the West End revival of Les Misérables. Eva later reprised her performance as Kim in the first Broadway revival of Miss Saigon (also her Broadway debut). In 2019, she made her film debut in Yellow Rose starring alongside Lea Salonga, who originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Eva originated the role of Eurydice in Hadestown on Broadway, and it's in Hadestown where she continues to lead, and take audiences “way down under the ground”. Eva speaks candidly about her past toxic relationship with the word “perfect”, how it affected her life as a 17 year old all on her own abroad, leading Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon, and why she felt like she was “falling for years”. She opens up about living with anxiety, panic attacks, and body dysmorphia, and how she's learned to come back to herself at those times, and ask the important questions - “Are we in danger? - We're okay”. Talking about Hadestown, Eva shares her thoughts on Eurydice (and playing Eurydice), and her love for the “extra layer of consciousness” that can be seen throughout the whole show. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up Filipino Mexican, and discovering musical theater A strong work ethic, instilled by her father The mental and physical toll of an 8 show schedule Meeting Tara Rubin at the Jimmy Awards Pole dancing as fitness, and how society sexualizes women Her “all or nothing” way of life Connect with Eva: IG: @livevamaria Twitter: @EvaNoblezada Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. The very first time I saw WICKED was when the national tour came to Cleveland in February 2008. The actress playing Glinda at the time was Katie Rose Clarke. As fate would have it, I was recently offered the chance to speak with her and Steven Jamail about their brand new song connected to their upbringing in Houston, Texas titled 'Margarita Christmas.' So naturally, I said yes. Katie Rose Clarke made her Broadway debut almost 20 years ago when she took over for Kelli O'Hara as Clara Johnson in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, where she even got to be a part of the PBS broadcast. Her subsequent credits include Hannah Campbell in ALLEGIANCE with George Takei and Lea Salonga, Ellen in the 2017 revival of MISS SAIGON, and most recently as Beth in the Tony-winning revival of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez. Not to mention that she also happens to be Broadway's longest-running Glinda in WICKED. Steven Jamail is a composer, producer, musical director who has done arrangements and orchestrations that have been performed on Oprah, Howard Stern, Rachel Ray, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Martha Stewart, The NBC Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center, and the American Songbook series at Lincoln Center. He has also created arrangements and played for Bebe Winans, Rosie O'Donnell, Jessie Mueller, Jeremy Abbott, and Adam Rippon. He serves as the regular music director for Orfeh, Teal Wicks, Danielle Hope, and Lea Michele, having just recently orchestrated and conducted Ms. Michele's lauded Carnegie Hall debut and Life in Music Tour. He is the Associate Artistic Director of O'Donnell's foundation, Rosie's Theater Kids in NYC. *I do not own any of the content used in this video. Somewhere beyond the barricade, is there a world you long to see? There's no more overtly theological (or more popular) musical than Claude-Michel Schönberg & Alain Boubil's 1980 Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel. From Valjean and Javert to Eponine and Fantine, this musical crams more pathos, prayer, and bad wigs into three hours than any other musical we know. Do you hear the people sing? _________________________________________ We talk about: Prologue (the Bishop) / Stars / Javert's Suicide – Javert, the police inspector, embodies a law-and-order version of the Christian gospel (shout-out to our Jansenist followers!) – and ultimately, the mercy he is shown destroys him. Are these competing atonement theories, or is there more subtlety in Les Mis' treatment of the Christian gospel and its consequences? I Dreamed a Dream / On My Own / A Little Fall of Rain – Fantine gets one, brief, shining moment before she dies (it's a weeper), and Eponine stands in for every alto who dreams of being the soprano – and then she dies, too. Why do most of the women in Les Mis end up dead? Turning, Turning – "What's the use of praying if there's nobody who hears it?" In a musical where women are mostly prostitutes or virgins, the women's chorus gives voice to one of the show's darkest and most provocative theological questions. Bring Him Home / Do You Hear the People Sing? – What does an evangelized life look like on the ground – and what does “somewhere beyond the barricade” really mean? _________________________________________ You'll hear Colm Wilkinson, Phillip Quast, Lea Salonga, Michael Ball and Judy Kuhn from the 1995 “Dream Cast Recording.” You'll also hear Anne Hathaway sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the 2012 film soundtrack because she won an Oscar for it, and attention must be paid. _________________________________________ Never miss an episode! Robert Bannon has been dazzling audiences on the stage and screen for years, his emotive and powerful vocals and knack for comedy bringing people by turns to tears of emotion, laughter and elation, and always to their feet. Now, the accomplished and lauded cabaret singer and "Saturday Night Live" actor is about to release "Unfinished Business," his debut album set for release in 2021. The highly anticipated album features Bannon's versatile vocal talents and includes duets with Grammy Nominee Jane Monheit and recording star Loren Smith. "Unfinished Business" consists of two originals and 11 classic songs by a variety of American Songbook crowd pleasers running the gamut from Frank Sinatra to Johnny Mercer to Whitney Houston. Bannon recorded the album in his home studio with all musicians adhering to social distancing guidelines. The album's first single, a powerful rendition of the Bette Midler song, "From a Distance," is a highly emotional and inspiring performance that sums up 2020 perfectly, providing an unforgettable, uplifting soundtrack to a tumultuous year. The track spotlights Bannon's unforgettable and emotive rich, soaring voice and vocal flourishes as he signs of a hopeful, peaceful and prosperous future. The album was produced by international cabaret superstar Lee Lassack. In 2020, Bannon and Lassack co-hosted the virtual sensation, “Quarantine, Cabaret, and Cocktails," a weekly live stream on Facebook and YouTube that has reunited the Broadway casts of “Frozen,” “Aladdin” and “Mrs. Doubtfire” and featured Broadway legends like Lea Salonga, Chita Rivera, Shoshana Bean and many more. They have also hosted the applauded "Best of Broadway and Music" on Facebook Live and YouTube. Bannon, a tireless performer, brings a wealth of experience and rave reviews to listeners. In addition to his work on "Saturday Night Live" the past three years, Bannon has performed with a number of rhythm-and-blues, jazz and comedy icons including Patti LaBelle, George Benson and Whoopi Goldberg at legendary venues like Madison Square Garden, the Beacon Theatre and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Bannon also sang for Bill and Hillary Clinton during for Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and for Hillary Clinton at a Martin Luther King Day event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Bannon has also traveled the country performing his hit one-man show, "Unfinished Business," including at New York's famed Feinstein's/54 Below cabaret. The autobiographical performance traces Bannon's journey from his time at the prestigious Juilliard Prep School to giving up music to become a teacher and finding his way back to the stage. He's also performed in national touring and regional productions of “My Big Gay Italian Wedding," “Rent,” “We Will Rock You,” “My Way” and many more. Robert Bannon has been singing since he was 12. He is a graduate of the William Esper Conservatory and Juilliard Prep, both in Manhattan. Bannon was admitted into the very first Juilliard Prep class for musical theater under the direction of Broadway icon Bertin Roswer at Lincoln Center. A Fort Lee, New Jersey, resident and native of Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, Bannon spends his "downtime" from singing and performing in the classroom as a 5th grade history teacher in North Bergen, New Jersey.

Dylan and Connor are joined by Katie Rose Clarke (Merrily We Roll Along, Wicked). Not a day has gone by that we haven't dreamed of having this LEGEND on the pod. After first meeting during a Wicked blizzard in Cleveland in 2008, Katie joins the twins to mention it ALL. Hear the story of Katie seeing her first Broadway show (Miss Saigon starring Lea Salonga) and then working with Lea years later. We talk all things Wicked, Carmen Cusack, and the process of crafting a story arc for Glinda. Katie shares the tale of making her Broadway debut, replacing Kelli O'Hara in The Light in the Piazza, then going on to star in Allegiance, Miss Saigon, and currently in Merrily We Roll Along. Lea Salonga was just 18 when she became an international theatre star, taking a leading role in the world premiere production of the musical Miss Saigon in 1989. Her performance - first in London, then on Broadway - won her Olivier and Tony awards. She has provided the singing voice for two Disney princesses, and has become a strong advocate for better Asian representation on stage and screen. She was born in Manila in the Philippines, where she made her professional stage debut in 1978 at the age of seven in a production of The King and I. Further roles in musicals followed, and she recorded a best-selling solo album when she was 10. Lea planned to become a doctor before she was invited to audition for Miss Saigon, and her immediate success launched a performing career in which she has made history many times. She was the first Asian woman to win a Tony for an acting role, the first Asian actor to star in Les Misérables, the first Filipino artist to sign a record deal with an international label and the first person to voice two different Disney princesses - Mulan and Jasmine in Aladdin, in which she sang A Whole New World, which won the Oscar for Best Original Song. She has appeared in numerous international stage productions, as well as television shows, films and singing tours. Earlier this year she starred in and made her debut as a producer on the musical Here Lies Love on Broadway: written by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, it focuses on the life of Imelda Marcos, wife of Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos. In September, Lea returned to the London Stage in 'Old Friends' , a musical tribute to Stephen Sondheim. She has performed for six Filipino and four American presidents. In this special crossover episode, host Luisa Lyons chats with Ebony Vines and Pamela Shandrow of the Theatre Geeks Anonymous podcast. Join us as we nerd out about musical theatre and take a look at three short-running Broadway musicals that were all filmed live: At the Drop of a Hat (1962) starring British comedy duo Flanders and Swann, Show Girl (1961) starring Carol Channing, and Allegiance (2017) starring George Takei, Telly Leung, and Lea Salonga.Guest BiosEbony Vines is a writer, director, producer and the co-host of Theatre Geeks Anonymous. Ebony's love of musical theatre was passed down from her late Mother who loved to watch musical movies with her daughter while grading her students' homework. After a long conversation with her friend Pamela about growing up a theater geek, obsessively listening to cast recordings and also loving true crime, they created the podcast Theatre Geeks Anonymous. At a very young age, Pamela Shandrow knew she wanted to be an actress. It was at 10 years old, when she watched the PBS version of Into The Woods with Bernadette Peters, that she decided her future would be in musical theatre! Since then she's performed in numerable regional shows, but is most proud of her work in the Broadway National Tours of Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked, as ensemble/Carlotta US and ensemble/Madame Morrible US respectively.Show LinksTheatre Geeks Anonymous At the Drop of a Hat Show Girl AllegianceSupport the showFilmed Live Musicals is where musicals come home. Take us back to our separate trips to Europe this year. Ange talks about her month long Spring visit to Germany, Brussels, and Amsterdam while Erin talks about her recent trip to Barcelona, Puglia (Italy), and Perchtoldsdorf (Austria). Then Ange dives into her quick trip to New York (she hadn't been back since 2003 y'all) and why it was a last minute decision. We wrap it up with Erin's somewhat annual Outside Lands jaunt peppered with beignet's, bounce, and her new obsession - The Foo Fighters (specifically Dave Grohl). This recording took place at one of our favorite bars in San Francisco, Zam Zam - which has a real jukebox filled with music by Nina Simone, Bill Withers, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Dr. John and so many more great musicians. Zam Zam also has one of our favorite bartenders - local artist Kundan Baidwan who first appeared on our show during our tribute Anthony Bourdain crawl back in 2018. Y'all, on a somber note, we are devastated by the climate destruction that has wreaked havoc on Maui. It's a special place for Erin and her husband, Jeff and we are shocked at the loss of life, small businesses, and generations of Hawaiian's. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back for their latest movie retrospective. This time they're chatting about Disney's Mulan for its 25th anniversary. Mulan is an animated adventure film directed by Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft. It is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. It opened in theaters on June 19, 1998. In the film, a young Chinese woman named Mulan (Ming-Na Wen, singing voice by Lea Salonga) poses as a man to take her frail father's place in the Imperial Army. Aiding Mulan is the miniature dragon Mushu (Eddie Murphy). Other characters include Captain Li Shang (BD Wong, singing voice by Donny Osmond), the villainous Hun leader Shan Yu (Miguel Ferrer), and the Chinese Emperor (Pat Morita). Mulan opened to a positive reception and outgrossed Disney's previous two animated films. It received one Academy Award nomination for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. Mulan spawned a direct-to-video sequel in 2004 and a live action remake in 2020. Aaron and Josh discuss the movie's plot, performances, animation, and songs. They also discuss the film's reception and place in Disney's animation catalogue. For more Disney podcasts, listen to Josh and Aaron talk about Hercules and Lilo & Stitch. Mulan is streaming on Disney+.
