Our next ensemble song takes us to 1890s Germany via Broadway in 2006. Spring Awakening, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by rocker Duncan Sheik, is based on an 1891 German play that explores many of the worst things that can occur to a person, especially during adolescence. Winner of 8 Tonys, the show speaks frankly about sexuality, abuse, and mental health, and while "The Song of Purple Summer" -- which we talk about in this episode -- doesn't address those issues directly, the show definitely does, as does our discussion. Listener discretion is very much advised: parents, talk to your kids before this one. When David Bowie wanted to update his sound in the 90s to the drum-n-bass that was popular on the streets, he picked producer/musician Mark Plati to get him there. Mark had come up under the mentorship of the great Arthur Baker and was venturing out on his own. He thinks it was producing Babylon Zoo's "Spaceman" that sealed the deal with Bowie. Mark stuck around for a decade producing albums like Earthling, Hours, and Reality. In addition there's work with the Cure, Duncan Sheik, Prince and many others. Mark's still at it producing and performing. Enjoy! www.mark-plati.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

Duncan Sheik & Steven Sater's 2006 rock musical magnum opus is adapted from Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 novel of the same name. The music, however, is adapted from another time. As is most of the slang use. But hey since it's so popular, we might give it a pass. Let's talk about "Spring Awakening"!
The Style Section is placed and the plastic draping is up as Steven and Mary navigate the psycho within themselves in this week's episode of From The Top! covering Brett Easton Ellis's novel, Christian Bale's Cult Classic, and a musical that may have been axed a little too early. That's right... Turn up Huey Lewis and the News, and enjoy going a little crazy with American Psycho: The Musical. Steven returns again to the booth with Mary and all that can be said is... They went a little Psycho... Steven quotes the author verbatim on how this story of yuppie culture came to fruition and wishes Duncan Sheik hadn't been able to book his reservation as composer, and Mary finds vindication in such our main, sinfully delicious, character, and attempts to understand what was going on in the minds of these insane 80's tropes. Hell... Even Elmo makes a cameo Tom Cruise would be proud of. So sit back and don't drink that glass of really great champagne, turn up your Walkman, and enjoy the honey almond body wash aroma as you dive into madness for a spell. Happy Listening! FOLLOW US! Today on That Tech Pod, Laura, Kevin, and Gabi speak with singer-songwriter Katie Boeck and producer Dustin Ransom live in Nashville, Tennessee about making music with technology in the age of A.I.Check out Katie's NEW music OUT NOW here: https://www.katieboeckmusic.comKatie Boeck's voice is earthy and cosmic. Her muses, modern and ancient. Her power, higher and worldly. Boeck doesn't just revel in these contradictions—she weaves them together on her forthcoming album, Calico due April 28, 2023. Calico captures the arc of maturing relationships—from naïveté and illusion to self-love and sovereignty. It's an album about modern love and the longing that still tugs beneath the promise of our hyper-connected culture. On the title track Boeck sings, “I'm in every direction / too many modes of connection.” And on the album's opener, Over Again, she ponders time and the gift of owning your history. “Would you do it over again/ lose ourselves along the path of good intentions”. These are songs about life taking unexpected courses and stories of love just out-of-reach.Boeck summons a pantheon of guides—wise women both mythic and real. Like Eve, Boeck likes to reimagine herself returning to Eden, whole. And Like Eurydice, Boeck followed one her musical guides, Joni Mitchell, out of the underworld. Recently divorced, newly single-parenting, Boeck was struggling to find her voice. So she looked to Joni's oracular songs to help renew her own creative spark. She learned Joni's watershed record Blue in its entirety and toured the show for a year. Living inside Joni's cadences and signature melismas led Boeck back to her own sonic soil. She used songwriting's ancient alchemy to find wisdom in her heartache and spiritual injuries. She also found kinship with co-producer Dustin Ransom (also recently divorced) who wound up co-writing and co-producing the album. Boeck's career has been wildly varied. After graduating UCLA's Theater program, she spent her early twenties playing every Westside LA dive bar and coffeehouse, living on Lookout Mountain and soaking in that Laurel Canyon sound. She landed a spot in an all-women Bollywood band that took her on a surreal six-month “Eat, Pray, Love-esque” tour of India, playing everything from farm weddings to theIndian Navy's annual gala. Afterwards, Boeck found herself back in LA with reverse culture shock, her '91 Chevy Caprice Classic and a heartbreak from a recent Spanish expat romance. She wove these experiences into the songs that appear on her debut EP, Speaking of You.Boeck then moved to New York to star in Duncan Sheik's musical, Spring Awakening, where she shared the lead role of Wendla with deaf actress Sandra Mae Frank. The play's success occasioned appearances on Late Night with Seth Meyers, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and a 2016 Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. Boeck's rendition of “Ave Maria” was featured on HBO's critically-acclaimed television series “The Newsroom” and her cover of Ace of Base's “The Sign” was recently featured on Netflix's “Love Island”. She has played Electric Forest Festival, Mile of Music, the Cutting Room, City Winery and Carnegie Hall. Boeck now lives in Nashville with her five-year-old son. “Boeck sings with a plaintive passion.” – NEW YORK TIMES

Chad & Cheese are reunited after a couple weeks apart, and it feels so good. (Side note: If you've been waiting for the episode with a Duncan Sheik reference, well it's your lucky day.) Aside from that, it's a show filled with cash-money, layoffs, robots and Big Macs. What could possibly be more fulfilling? Specifically, the boys are talking about Sapia.ai, WorkJam, and Job.com getting new funding, then jumping to Amazon replacing their recruiting teams with bots, tech layoffs galore and what it means for the recruiting industry. Next up: Firing people via email in the middle of the night right before Thanksgiving, a McDonald's Gold Card offering food for life, Pickle, Nuro and so much more. Enjoy.

Fronting cover bands in Las Vegas as a teenager and early twenties, he naturally began writing and recording. Releasing his first album in 1995 with his band Trip and three albums to follow. Maggie Poulos is a fascinating example of a talented musician, who is also deeply embedded in the business side of the music world. She's fronted numerous bands such as the all-female NYC trio The Crushes. And as the founder of Mixtape Media, Maggie has done PR for such high-profile clients as Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, Cake, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Duncan Sheik. Since moving from New York back home to the Philadelphia suburbs, she has become the go-to publicist of the Philly indie rock scene, working with Mo Louda and the Humble, Don McCloskey, and some band known as the Caulfields.. Most recently she landed some amazing press for a 1-woman theatrical production called “Queen of Fishtown.” She's a great conversationalist with strongly held beliefs and a passion for that thing called rock 'n' roll, simultaneously nostalgic for the MTV-era musical icons she grew up loving, yet constantly on the lookout for great new artists and ways to help them succeed in the musical landscape that we're all facing today. During our extended lunch at Nudy's Cafe in Paoli, PA (where we were kicked out, having lost track of time for close to hour after the place was technically closed), we chatted about songwriting, politics, and presidential assassination attempts, among other things. ❤

Katy returns to her fandom roots this week with a tale of no-stakes internet drama: the tale of MsScribe and her rise and fall in the Harry Potter fandom. JK Rowling is trash, but the shenanigans the fandom got up to after the release of Goblet of Fire is DELICIOUS. But first! MM went on a road trip that was... something. Katy used to cosplay at anime conventions and write Sailor Moon fanfiction, so she feels qualified to talk about internet dramatics. MM and her brother share a love of Star Trek. Let's all have a Duncan Sheik renaissance. MM learns that fanfiction can be a dark place. PA Ollie weighs in. This is the one where Bree (@bleach226) and Jess (@jesspkoehler) talk about how we hate Dreyer even more than we hate Sloane, how Sydney was maybe almost assassinated (but not really), how Will is really getting in deep with that bug, and how we're really starting to get stressed out over parking structures. It's also the one where we have a few audio difficulties -- Bree sounds a little far away and Jess' dog is a bit loud. Sorry! MUSIC: If you're watching on Amazon and want to line up the scenes with the original feature songs, here are the sound clips. Sydney parachutes into Tuscany: Amazon and the original are the same. Francie checks in on Sydney (start 32:23): Play Out of Order by Duncan Sheik starting the song at 00:00. Nicole is glad to see this week end. Julianna Forlano brought some cheer to the day as she's pregnant, and we now know she's got a little girl on the way! Our Flashback Friday segment was from December 1996 at KSCA in Los Angeles with Emmylou Harris, Susannah Hoffs and Duncan Sheik who were all performing that night at our annual homeless benefit, "Gimme Shelter." I started a second session, but the computer died, so we'll do that one next week.
