The Next Train by Paul Asbury Seaman

The guest mix hit parade continues! Right on the heels of his last train mix Paul gives another train-themed set. This is one more in line with many of Paul's other train mixes in that it's main genre is berlin-school. I have been on a berlin-school bender all year so I am excited for this one. Here's what Paul says about the mix: "You're sitting on a grassy slope above the cottage, looking out across the landscape below. It's night and soft dots of light here and there indicate other houses, groups of houses, a road. In the distance you can see the black edge of a ruler, marking the gap between carriages and a bright bar of light moving left in front of it. Like happens in dreams, you are watching the scene and then you are in it, your seat tipped back, not quite asleep, you're looking out the window. It's a modern train. Gone is the classic click-click, click-click, but you can still feel the subtle rocking back and forth as the train hurtles silently forward. Under the stars. The cacophony of a station stop, made eerie in the wee hours of the morning. Or memory stirring up a previous adventure then returning you to your current tranquility." Thanks, Paul, for another excellent entry in your continuing train series. Beaconsfield Election 2025: Martin St-Jean on Transparency & Good Governance

Broady Windsor Group Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2025 45:36

Beaconsfield heads toward a pivotal municipal election on Sunday, November 2. This episode digs into housing options, transparency at city hall, fiscal responsibility, and how decisions actually move from idea to action. The goal is simple: give residents clear context before they vote.Who Is Martin St-JeanA Beaconsfield resident since 2009, Martin is a lawyer focused on municipal law, ethics, and governance. He previously served in senior legal roles for Montréal and Westmount, including work connected to the Charbonneau Commission. Elected to Beaconsfield council in 2021, he argues that council experience equips him to “hit the ground running” on day one.Vision For Growth And HousingMartin supports “gentle” density in targeted nodes without changing Beaconsfield's single-family character. He highlights opportunities near Beaurepaire Village and around the shopping mall and train station, where mixed-use and transit-adjacent homes could create options for downsizers and young families. He stresses pacing, location, and fit with neighborhood context over blanket up-zoning.Transparency Residents Can SeeResidents want to know how decisions are made, not just how votes are counted. Martin proposes publishing succinct caucus topic summaries, next steps, and mandates given to administration. He points to Westmount's practice as proof that clearer communication is workable and helps reduce confusion and division.Putting Numbers In Plain LanguageMajor contract approvals often feel abstract. Martin wants the city to explain scope, cost versus estimates, market conditions, timelines, and the specific streets or sectors affected. He believes residents accept costs more readily when they understand what they're paying for and when the work will happen.Lessons From Recent DevelopmentsThe Atomas project near the mall illustrates both the promise and pitfalls of private development. Martin notes new bylaw tools that push promoters to build within stated timelines. The Elm Plaza experience underscored the need for early engagement. His takeaway is direct: communicate early, listen actively, and adapt projects to the community rather than asking the community to adjust to a fixed plan.Clearer Rules For Permits And DesignArchitectural integration decisions are inherently subjective. A citizen committee evaluates fit with the streetscape, and projects may need multiple iterations. Martin supports keeping this resident-driven review while clarifying expectations to cut repeat submissions and speed decisions, even when the answer is no.The Agglomeration And The LawsuitBeaconsfield's legal challenge over the agglomeration cost-sharing remains active and, in Martin's view, strong. He favors staying the course while building a united front with demerged municipalities to seek fairer governance and taxation. He frames the current agglomeration voting structure as imbalanced and calls for reforms that give residents a meaningful voice.Patience, Process, And Priority SettingCity projects take time. Between budgeting, social acceptability, and design, progress is incremental by design. Martin argues that steady evolution—not upheaval—delivers durable results, provided the city communicates each step clearly and invites residents into the process earlier.A Call To ParticipateTurnout is historically low in municipal elections. Martin urges residents to learn about each candidate, engage with the ideas, and vote. With a new mayor guaranteed and several council seats turning over, the choices made now will shape Beaconsfield's next chapter.Connect With The GuestPhone: (514) 791-6674Email: martin@mst-jean.caWebsite:

The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight and tomorrow night, August 12th & 13th. I like to use the Perseids as an excuse to create a spacey, ambient mix for stargazing. So here it is. The first track I grabbed for this mix was Jeff Pearce - For The Perseids, from the Gemstones IV compilation. How could I not use that cut in a mix like this. So I decided to look for other tracks with names that would fit and it was fairly easy to find a bunch that worked. Again, how could I resist tunes called "Luminous Dust Trails" and "Night Drifters" and "Comet Tails." Get outside and scan the skies. On Father's Day Weekend in 1969, six-year-old Dennis Martin was camping with his family near Spence Field in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park when he vanished without a trace, leading to one of the largest searches in the history of the National Park Service. Tragically, he was never found, and the disappearance of Dennis Lloyd Martin remains unresolved after more than half a century.  In recent years, renewed interest in the case has led to speculations about a possible kidnapping, as well as theories that an "Appalachian wild man" akin to Sasquatch may have been involved. Such theories focus on the testimony provided by the late Harold Key and his family, who observed an individual in the park under odd circumstances that unfolded on the same day as the disappearance of Dennis Lloyd Martin.  In this special episode of Sasquatch Tracks, the team takes a deep dive into the details of the disappearance, discussing a recent Hulu series that discusses the kidnapping theory and its possible relevance to what some witnesses liken to wild men or even "apelike" creatures inhabiting the remotest portions of our National Parks. We examine the evidence for this, along with several alternative explanations for the disappearance, and what U.S. government documents and independent research into the landmark search and rescue case reveal.  Stories and other links discussed in this episode:  Dennis Lloyd Martin: 50 Years Ago, This Boy Vanished in the Great Smoky Mountains Cold Cases - Investigative Services (U.S. National Park Service)  Watch OUT THERE: Crimes of the Paranormal Streaming On Hulu Follow Sasquatch Tracks on Twitter.
