Solitary Confinement in Oregon, Part 2 of 5

In this episode, we continue our special series on Solitary Confinement by turning our focus to Oregon's only women's prison—Coffee Creek—and the often-overlooked realities of solitary confinement behind its walls. Kyle Black shares firsthand accounts of the degrading strip searches, traumatizing isolation, and the human toll of a system designed to punish, not protect. We explore how solitary is used as a catch-all for everything the prison can't—or won't—address, and ask: who is truly being kept safe?CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of suicide, self-harm, and sexual abuse. Listener discretion is advised. If these topics are distressing for you, please take care while listening, and consider skipping this episode if needed. Help is available to anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts. Call 988 to speak to someone today. The Trail Blazing Justice podcast is a production of the Oregon Justice Resource Center.

After moving from the Chicago suburbs to St. Louis in the late '80s, Adam Reichmann met Todd Schnitzer at Washington University. Both were wanting to form a band. They did just that, and the two became an early version of what would become Nadine, a group that would not only get a lot of attention in the Midwest, but in Europe as well. Nadine received critical acclaim from major music publications after releasing some very fine records. Adam Reichmann continues to write and record solo. His new album, Where Do I Begin under the name One Adam One, was produced by none other than his long-time bandmate, Todd Schnitzer. This is the third episode from Rooster Road Trip XIII. Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Pheasants Forever's Director of Marketing Andrew Vavra, Senior Regional Representative Renee Tomala, and Graphic Design Manager Logan Hinners to recap the third and fourth days of the group's Montana hunt. Day 3 was spent battling strong winds on the picturesque Wolf Creek Block Management Area, while rain-soaked roosters highlighted Day 4's hunt across the stunning Coffee Creek Block Management Area. Episode Highlights: • Vavra recounts the hilarious story of finding an impressive, but stinky, pair of pronghorn sheds. How bad did they smell? So bad that Tomala wouldn't approach a dog on point that was downwind from Vavra. • Tomala takes us through a rooster-filled sequence during a rainstorm at Coffee Creek where her shooting skills and her bird dog Quill's pointing prowess were both put on display. As Eric misses today's podcast as the public defense crisis wages on, Bobbin kicks back with Juan to talk about the week in news. Juan and Bobbin unpack the tough-on-crime push for increased police budget and for more officers from the Brooklyn Subway shooting, and how an already bloated budget has failed to prevent gun violence and will continue to fail to meet objectives to keep people safe. The two talk about how community well-being is what prevents crime, not more cops and prisons. Bobbin talks about how DA Kevin Barton failed the women at Coffee Creek by overlooking abuse, and how DA's are buying into the tough-on-crime pathos.

Bobbin and Eric re-introduce Post-Conviction Review and State Habeas Corpus, discussing what they are and how, in theory, they provide a check on state actors.=Juan Chavez was not able to join us this week, but we will hear from our Civil Rights Associate Director, Franz Bruggemeier next week to talk about teargas and the lack of accountability in the Portland police.Produced by Beatrix Li, OJRC Policy & Communications Associate

In this podcast, we speak with Glen Cooper, founder of Circle of Security, a program that helps parents, caregivers, and early childhood educators develop tools to form secure attachments with children and understand how to meet the needs of children who have experienced trauma. Having learned that Circle of Security was being used as part of a pilot program for mothers at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, we were curious to learn more about how the program was developed. Glen, who has extensive training in family system therapy, object relations theory, and attachment theory, worked with colleagues Kent Hoffman and Bert Powell to combine those theories into an approach that allows parents, educators, and care givers to identify and address the underlying causes of challenging behaviors in children. In this interview, Glen also addresses the unique challenges facing incarcerated parents and how Circle of Security is being used at Coffee Creek and elsewhere to support parents who are in prison and their children.

This podcast we have Anna Debenham, founder of the Insight Alliance with us - and this conversation will totally inspire you and give you hope for humanity and peoples potential to change!Anna works with the incarcerated or previously incarcerated to help them with their current situation and find a new better future. She does that in a new and sustainable way: By looking at the mind. In a very human, common sense way she helps facilitate  the unlocking of peoples minds and point towards the resilience within them. The result is they increase their wellbeing, mental health, and make different choices either while still in prison or when they get out. She explains that the only thing that truly can make somebody change is an internal shift - and that is what all her work is about. To check out more from what she is talking about, check out this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv7lMMdBCYE In this podcast you will hear stories about her own journey of doing this work, aswell as examples from her students in prison. This is the solution to truly rehabilitating and preventing, and looks for peoples mental health. About Insight Alliance The Insight Alliance uncovers the natural resilience and innate mental health all human beings already have inside them. It teaches a simple understanding of how our feelings, experience and state of mind works; an understanding that enables people to thrive in any circumstances. Prospective outcomes of programs include a decrease in stress and depression; improved relationships, increased feelings of connection and trust, reduced levels of obsessive and judgmental thinking; increased desire to access education/jobs; a decrease in the probability of recidivism and/ or relapse and generally feeling more of their natural wellbeing.About Anna Debenham: My passion for nurturing health, wellbeing and resilience in myself and my clients reflects my own expanding grasp of the infinite possibilities of life that supports a peaceful and balanced state of mind. The depth and breadth of my experience ranges from being part of a multi-disciplinary healing and support team for at-risk boys at the London organization, StreetWise Youth; establishing an outpatient program for a drug and alcohol recovery centre in Melbourne, Australia; to working as a coach and facilitator for Westminster council in London. My career shifted when I came across this groundbreaking way of helping people understand the principles behind our state of mind. My experience working in a UK prison with Beyond Recovery ignited a love of helping those incarcerated and those transitioning to their freedom. Now I bring all my experience together as Director of The Insight Alliance. The Insight Alliance is partnered with the YWCA as we expand to Coffee Creek woman’s prison and SCI in Salem. The programs continue to grow by word of mouth and by post-release individuals that stay connected to and work with the Alliance. The organic evolution of The Insight Alliance demonstrates the boundless potential and creative possibility of inspired people, and the wonderful power of fresh thought.
