The fiddler Mark O'Connor is probably best known for his million-selling Appalachian Waltz project – a kind of chamber/folk album with famed cellist Yo Yo Ma and bassist Edgar Meyer. Mark has also written string quartets, concertos, and orchestral pieces – and they all come from the same place as his solo fiddle sets – everything is rooted in the sounds of American music, especially bluegrass. Maggie O'Connor is also a fiddler, and singer, who moves easily between those two worlds, and together, this husband-and-wife team have been touring with a program called Beethoven and Bluegrass. We talk with SCCA Hall of Fame race car driver Randy Pobst. From his racing origins in a Mk1 VW Rabbit, to his 2 wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and his personal car collection – including his Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am and Flyin' Moose Volvo 740.  To start, we'll dive into Randy's racing experience: factory contracts with Porsche, Mazda, Volvo, and Toyota. Winning the 24 Hours of Daytona not once, but twice, and his 2015 induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame. We'll cover his exploits at Thunderhill, VIR, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Daytona, Pikes Peak, Sonoma, Lime Rock, Willow Springs, and more!  From humble origins in a Mk1 VW Golf (no, not a GTI), to a factory-backed FX16 Toyota Corolla, to setting a Laguna Seca lap record in a McLaren Senna. Randy even worked on the set of 2 Fast 2 Furious as a driving instructor for the film's stars: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, and Devon Aoki – to name a few.  Randy eventually met Jason while filming an uncooperative Cayman GT4 for Motor Trend, and, despite a rocky start when Jason unexpectedly flung a Range Rover off track while racing Randy in an Alfa Romeo 4C, the two teamed up again to film multiple Ultimate Drag Race, Lap Battle and ICONS episodes for Hagerty. The whole gang laments some of the most irritating modern car tech: excessively bright headlights, lights that are somehow off at night, ABS systems that fully shut down when traveling backwards, AEB overreach, and EPAS systems that completely ruin a car's limit handling by curtailing the driver's ability to quickly catch a slide (like the Shelby GT350 Randy repeatedly spun and Jason crinkled at Willow Springs – not to mention the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 Randy famously wrecked at Pikes Peak).  Speaking of handling, Randy divulges his dislike of twitchy cars like the Jaguar F-Type R and XJ, the KTM X-Bow, and Ariel Atom. Jason on the other hand loves an ass-y car like the V12 Vantage S, but says the Lotus Exige V6 Cup was so tail-happy it was uncontrollable. The Porsche Carrera GT is somewhere in the middle with mixed reviews and experience all around. While on the topic of handling dynamics, Randy tells us his secret plan to invent a fix for the C8 Corvette's trailing throttle oversteer. He also gives praise to Porsche's Lars Kern for his work on the latest crop of RS products – which may or may not be Randy's favorite track cars of all time out of the box, alongside the 2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition. All of which receive top marks on Randy's understeer spectrum, and are polar opposites of the likes of a 1960s Cadillac.  We'll touch on Randy's personal car collection as well, which includes a Volvo 740 sedan and wagon, his 1977 Pontiac Trans Am “Randit” (and its oil starvation woes), Toyota Tundra tow vehicle, VW Karmann Ghia and early Tesla Model S.  Plus, Derek invents a new phrase for “road rage”, Randy bitch slaps cars out of his way, and also beautifully sings Primus' Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. When you think of the greatest private equity deals of all time, names like Google, Facebook, Uber, Dell, and Hilton come to mind. After a recent episode of Private Equity Deals, you might also think about 3G's acquisition of Burger King. But I'd bet you wouldn't think about an oil and gas play called CrownRock. Lime Rock Capital created CrownRock alongside a management team with $96.5 million of cash and assets in 2007. Seventeen years later, sold the business to Occidental Petroleum for $12.5 billion. Lime Rock's original investment made 79x its money, a net IRR of 18%, and $7.5 billion in gains, which ranks in the top ten fully exited private equity deals of all time. It also exited a continuation vehicle that generated 3x its cost over the last six years of the deal's life. My guests to discuss the firm and its grand slam CrownRock deal are Lime Rock Managing Directors John Reynolds, Jonathan Farber, and J McLane. Our conversation covers Lime Rock's investment approach and the example of CrownRock. We dive into the initial investment thesis around vertical drilling, the three extinction threats to the business, innovation of horizontal drilling, management excellence, exit options along the way, and the ‘forever hold' mindset that allowed CrownRock to compound extraordinary amounts of capital. On this episode of the FEG Insight Bridge Podcast, CIO Greg Dowling welcomes Gary Sernovitz as they delve into Gary's dual careers as author and Managing Director at Lime Rock. Gary shares insights into his latest book, The Counting House, and its relevance to institutional investors. Approaching investment from an innovative, semi-fictional perspective, he reveals his inspiration and the role his wife played in encouraging this unique approach to investment storytelling. As Gary shares his integration of humor and truth in fiction, the conversation unpacks the performance pressures faced by CIOs, and the blend of real and fictional elements in character development. Gary discusses FEG's connection to the fictional firm of Busken Capital and satirizes generic private equity firms. He describes the four types of limited partners (LPs), his writing process, and real-life experiences of bizarre general partners (GPs) and limited partner (LPs) meetings. As the conversation comes to a close, Gary provides a sneak peek into alternative endings for the book, shares with listeners his favorite books, and provides recommendations for listeners interested in new reading material. For more information on The Counting House, visit: The Counting House — Gary Sernovitz To purchase The Counting House, visit: Octavia Books Key TakeawaysThe discussion emphasizes the significant impact of relative performance and league tables on the psyche and career of institutional investors. The public nature of endowment performance and the comparisons with peers creates a competitive environment, adding another layer of pressure for CIOs and their teams. This episode highlights a chapter from the book that humorously dissects the clichés in private equity pitch decks, including exaggerated competitor maps and funnels, while providing a comedic yet realistic portrayal of the repetitive nature of pitch presentations. As the discussion continues, it includes an insightful categorization of limited partners (LPs) into four types (grillers, testers, statues, and fans), emphasizing the varied approaches and attitudes limited partners (LPs) have during meetings. Ranging from aggressive questioning to silent observation, these responses highlight the unpredictable nature of investment pitches. You can find every episode of FEG Insight Bridge podcasts in one place and sign up to receive our other publications here.

Over the years I've become a real good spectator. But what appealed to me about racing from day one is the same stuff that appeals to me now. It's the whole visceral approach to racing. It's the image of the cars, both on the pace lap as they come around the grandstand, as well as flat out racing. And it was also that voice from above, the announcer, the guy who was telling me what was happening on the track, but probably equally as importantly, what was happening off the track, the fellow who was weaving this whole storyline for the balance of the day or the evening, whatever the case may be. We have with us tonight... Joe Morata, the voice of Syracuse for 44 years at Super Dirt Week. Roy Sova, with over 50 years at Oswego Speedway. Gary Montgomery, who for several years was one of the voices, on the Motor Racing Network. Mike Paz, who announced nine different NASCAR tracks over the years. Frank Del Vecchio, our racer turned announce, and last but certainly not least, Greg Rickes, the voice of Lime Rock. We don't have six good announcers up here… We have six great announcers up here! This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family - and was recorded in front of a live studio audience. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/

This week we joined by Gary Sernovitz a Managing Director at Lime Rock, an oil and gas focused private equity firm, and the author of the Counting House, a novel about investment management. Gary started his career as an oil equity research analyst at Goldman Sachs before making the transition to the buy side. We're delighted to have Gary on the podcast as we believe he is the first fiction writer that we have had on. His latest novel shines a light on what the university endowment world is like, how it operates, its different cultures, motivations and characters. While researching the novel, Gary spoke with Verger CEO Jim Dunn a future guest on the Value Perspective. In the episode, we discuss: Gary's career journey; the research behind his novel; how an investor can differentiate themselves; the personalities and politics between decision makers; absolute returns vs relative; and finally, the ethical dilemmas faced by modern CIOs. Ida Lewis was featured on the cover of Harper's Weekly in July 1869 Ida Lewis, born in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1842, became one of the most celebrated lighthouse keepers in American history. Her father, Hosea Lewis, was appointed the first keeper of the Lime Rock Light Station in Newport Harbor in 1853, and Ida learned to care for the light as a teenager. Hosea Lewis suffered a paralyzing stroke in 1857. From that time, young Ida was essentially the keeper, although she didn't get the official appointment until much later. Ida's rowing skills and courage were to come into play many times during her life at Lime Rock. Officially, she's credited with 18 lives saved, but the number was probably much higher. She remained keeper at Lime Rock until her death in 1911. Lenore Skomal There are two guests in today's episode. Lenore Skomal is the winner of multiple awards for literature, biography, and humor, with over 30 years of professional writing experience as a journalist, columnist, author, and playwright, and 17 books published to date. Lenore's book on Ida Lewis, The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter, was originally published in 2002. The New York Public Library listed it as a 2003 best book for teens. Nico Raineau The book has now been optioned to be adapted into a motion picture to be directed by Nico Raineau. Nico is an award-winning filmmaker originally from Mystic, Connecticut. His career began as the assistant to actor/director Ben Affleck on the film The Town, before he transitioned into creative development for Robert Downey Jr. and multiple Academy Award winning producers. Nico is currently producing and fundraising for a new short film that will bring attention to the Ida Lewis film project.
