Ken Vance exposes how the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program buried crucial details about their light rail plan requiring a 70-foot elevator system at the waterfront stop. While Governor Ferguson touted a $7.65 billion bridge cost, the full project price tag hit $15.2 billion with no public oversight planned. Vancouver's mayor revealed the hidden elevator requirement that IBR officials conveniently omitted from their recent cost announcement. Clark County voters have rejected light rail three times, yet the project continues expanding with what Vance calls a "blank checkbook" approach from WSDOT and ODOT. https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/opinion/opinion-when-are-we-going-to-get-the-full-and-complete-details-of-the-interstate-bridge-replacement-programs-i-5-bridge-replacement-project/ #IBR #I5Bridge #LightRail #Transportation #ClarkCounty #Vancouver #PublicOversight #GovernmentAccountability #WashingtonPolitics #Opinion

Washington State highways and bridges are in need of a serious refresh. That’s according to a WSDOT official who told the Washington State Transportation Commission this month: “We are in the early stages of critical failure due to lack of funding.” - Troy Suing, Director, Capital Program Development and Management, Washington State Department of Transportation “Preservation” generally refers to the long-term work needed to sustain already existing infrastructure. WSDOT says it’ll need an additional $8 billion dollars over the next decade to do that work. Jerry Cornfield at the Washington State Standard reported that while the Legislature did approve a 15.5 BILLION dollar budget for the next two years…. less than a billion dollars was earmarked for preservation over that time. That’s well short of the $1.6 Billion needed to keep pace with the wear and tear put on our state’s infrastructure. Since 1994, the Washington Department of Transportation has operated a roadside memorial program that allows for the creation and installation of signs along state highways in honor of victims of fatal collisions. Washington was the first state in the nation to start a roadside memorial program, and there are now more than 1,000 signs posted along state highways bearing a message such as “Reckless Driving Costs Lives” or “Please Don’t Drink and Drive” above the name of a crash victim. Nearly 70% of the roughly 500 signs installed in the first 15 years of the program are still standing. The Columbian recently reported on WSDOT’s current efforts to collect public feedback about the future of its roadside memorial program and possible changes to it, such as limiting how long the signs can be up for and how often they can be renewed by family members. Kelly Moyer, a staff reporter at The Columbian, joins us for more details, including concerns that family members who had paid for memorial signs shared with her. We also hear from Sarah Risser, the treasurer and board member of the Portland chapter of the national nonprofit Families for Safe Streets. In 2019, while Risser was driving with her 18 year-old son in Wisconsin, a motorist crashed into the vehicle, killing her son and leaving her injured. Last year, Risser placed a sign honoring victims at every fatal crash site in Portland, and she has also created bike memorials at the request of families of cyclists killed on Portland roads.

If you’ve driven from Seattle to Mount Rainier this summer, you might’ve had to find a different route from normal – one that misses the town of Wilkeson. Since April, this Pierce County town of just under 500 people has been cut off from a major source of economic activity: Through traffic, due to the closure of the Fairfax Bridge a few months ago. And, to add insult to injury, another key bridge is also closed. The White River Bridge was blocked off following a crash involving a semitruck. Wilkeson Councilmember Jayme Peloli says her town is suffering due to these closures. She’d been calling for Washington’s governor to issue an emergency proclamation in order to seek federal dollars to reimburse state efforts to fix these bridges. Yesterday, he did just that, in an effort to address the White River Bridge closure. We talk with Peloli about what's been going on in Wilkeson. Guest Jayme Peloli, Wilkeson councilmember Editor's note: We received a statement from WSDOT after this episode aired on the radio. It reads, in part: "The Governor’s emergency proclamation is the first step in WSDOT seeking federal funds for repairs to the White River Bridge. While this does not guarantee that WSDOT will receive funding from the Federal Highway Administration, we believe the bridge strike qualifies as a catastrophic failure from an external cause under the statute, and we will actively pursue emergency reimbursement. Securing this funding will help ensure that state dollars can go further as we balance the many pressing needs across our transportation system."
