Episode 213: Defining Success On Your Own Terms with Congresswoman Sharice Davids

BEYOND BARRIERS

Twenty years ago, when I first came to America, I felt like a complete outsider. I didn't look like, sound like, or dress like people around me. I chased goals that I didn't really care about because I thought that's what was expected of me. But the harder I tried to fit in, the more I struggled personally and professionally. You see, I was defining success from other people's perspective. Our guest today is US Congresswoman Sharice Davids, from Kansas' Third Congressional District, who shares her inspiring story of overcoming obstacles and rising to the top by defining success on her own terms.  Sharice was raised by a single mom who spent more than 20 years serving in the US Army. A proud graduate of Leavenworth High School, Sharice was the first person in her family to attend college. She worked her way from Johnson County Community College to Cornell Law School, juggling multiple jobs to put herself through school. Sharice went on to work in economic and community development on Native American reservations, helping tribes to create programs and initiatives for growth. This work inspired her to apply for the prestigious White House Fellowship program, where she served under President Barack Obama and continued to create economic opportunity for others. Sharice ran for Congress to give Kansans a voice, and to make sure everyone has the same opportunities to achieve their goals that she did. In 2018, Sharice was elected to represent Kansas' Third District, becoming one of the first two Native American women ever to serve in Congress.  In 2020, she was re-elected to her second term. She has spent her time in office working tirelessly to tackle the issues most important to Kansas families, including strengthening small businesses, lowering the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs, and making sure the government is working for the people — not special interests. In this episode, Rep. Davids shares her perspective on why it's important to first embrace who you are for others to embrace and accept you as you are. She also shares why service matters, how to build a thriving community, and what strategies helped her achieve her goals. Visit www.iambeyondbarriers.com where you will find show notes and links to all the resources in this episode, including the best way to get in touch with Rep. Davids.    Highlights:  [03:57] What shaped Representative Davids' life[09:22] Gaining clarity on your career path[12:50] How Representative Davids got into politics[15:31] First time running for office[24:18] Facing the possibility of failure[26:52] Campaigns are entrepreneurial[29:22] Owning her seat at the table[35:23] Advice to other on pursuing a career in politics[41:36] How to engage with Representative Davids[43:07] The meaningful work of LPAC Quotes: “When dealing with rejection on the campaign trail, I had to remind myself that  this is not about me, this is about the future of our country, our democracy.” - Rep. Sharice Davids “The biggest opportunities for growth come from moments when you are experiencing something that is hard and challenging.” - Rep. Sharice Davids "Running a campaign is a very entrepreneurial process." - Rep. Sharice Davids  "One thing that changed my life was realizing that I get to decide what success means to me." - Rep. Sharice Davids About Sharice Davids: Sharice Davids is currently serving Kansas' Third Congressional District in Congress. Sharice was raised by a single mom, who spent more than 20 years in the Army followed by a career in civil service at the US Post Office. Sharice graduated from Leavenworth High School. She attended Haskell Indian Nations University and the University of Kansas before graduating from Johnson County Community College and later the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She went on to earn a law degree from Cornell Law School. Sharice calls herself a “former” first generation college student, since her mom earned a degree in history from UMKC in 2016. Sharice is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, a Native American tribe in Wisconsin. Sharice is highly trained in martial arts and has competed as both an amateur and professional in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Sharice was one of 16 selected to participate in the prestigious White House Fellowship program (2016-2017). Sharice has lived and worked on Native American reservations, working with tribes to create economic development opportunities, programs, and initiatives. Sharice regularly speaks at conferences as a nationally recognized expert on economic and community development in Native communities. Join Dr. Kristy Howell to learn about her research on the origins of JCCC and a discussion of creating community colleges in "white-flight" towns. In her dissertation, "OPEN DOORS AND CLOSED COMMUNITIES: CREATING COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN WHITE-FLIGHT TOWNS," Dr. Howell examines how the College of DuPage (CoD), in suburban DuPage County, Illinois, and Johnson County Community College (JCCC), in suburban Johnson County, Kansas, offer an interesting lens through which to examine topics of institutional history and culture, community relationships, and the leadership decisions of first presidents and their boards. The histories of CoD and JCCC, founded in restricted-residency, affluent, and rapidly expanding suburbs in the 1960s, also provide telling examples of campus/community interactions around the question of who could be a part of the community – and therefore the campus. Comparing these two campuses illustrates 1960s-era protests in the community colleges, describes how campus unrest occurred, and examines its management on nonresidential campuses. Find out more about the special exhibit, Redlined: Cities, Suburbs and Segregation Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, a year-long deep dive into the history of redlining in Kansas City and practices that followed. 1. The practice of beekeeping is a 9,000-year-old tradition. Some of the world's first beekeepers were prehistoric farmers. Today, there are between 115,000 and 125,000 beekeepers in the US. 2. Bees may be able to differentiate between different human faces (kind of). 3. Honeybees communicate with each other via physical movements like head butts, which researchers say could mean "stop," and waggle dances that could signal where the nest is. 4. A queen bee can live up to five years. Workers for just five or six weeks. 5. Queen bees lay up to 2,000 eggs per day. 6. The average worker bee makes just one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey over its entire lifespan. 7. Worker honeybees can fly up to 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour). Robert Hughes' family have been beekeeping for 4 generations. Robert started beekeeping over 50 years ago. For the past 15 years, Robert has been teaching Beekeeping classes at the Johnson County Community College in Kansas City. He established an apiary on the college campus so the students can learn to work with bees. In this podcast Robert and one of his students, Roger Hicks, share all about bees and their importance to our planet. Sanctuary Bistro is located in Charlotte, NC in the Ballantyne area and Woman-Owned by Jennifer Horton and delicious food by Executive Chef Barry Horton.Jennifer Jones Horton is owner, speaker, writer, front of the house, you name it. If it doesn't involve cooking she has her hands in it. She grew up in Gloucester, Massachusetts and has lived in Atlanta, California and now North Carolina. The passion behind Sanctuary Bistro began for Jennifer at age 13. She became concerned about the cruelty and pollution of factory farming when a friend shared a PETA flyer. From there she started buying her own veggie burgers. For a traditional “meat and potatoes” family this was considered"different" and "rebellious." As she continued learning, she slowly stopped eating chicken, eggs, and eventually seafood, out of compassion. It was hard NOT to change once she knew about the cruel treatment that is inflicted on animals. She still feels that if people would open their minds to understanding it they would not choose to hurt something. Her concerns are the effect the meat and dairy industry have on the planet and so Sanctuary Bistro is their solution for making change.Executive Chef Barry Horton is amazing in his culinary skills. Jennifer and Barry are a team at work and in life. He has been the Executive Chef at the Famous Ravens' restaurant in Mendocino Ca. He has been on television with view from the Bay and has had many published articles in Edible, He was also nominated by Veg NEWS 3 years in a row for best vegan restaurant. He always lent a helpful hand in the kitchen growing up. In high school, Barry enrolled in a semester cooking class unaware this would eventually be his life's path.In 2000, Barry began attending culinary courses at Johnson County Community College when he realized, “this is what I love to do.” By 2002, taking things more seriously, Barry decided to take his skills to a French Culinary program. After perusing his options, Barry chose the Le Cordon Bleu program at the Western Culinary Institute in which he graduated at the top of his class. His desire to continue his education learning about an organic, sustainable, vegetarian lifestyle led to his internship at the Ravens' Restaurant of the Stanford Inn in Mendocino, Ca where he quickly worked his way up to co-chef in 2005 and Head Chef in 2006 until October of 2009. During this time, he has learned that a chemical-free, locally grown, plant-based diet is optimal for a long, sound, healthy life, as well as, and most importantly, a compassionate life.Website: www.sanctuarybistro.com Instagram @sanctuarybistroFree Weight Loss Master Class: veganstrongandfit.com/masterclassSave 10% on your order at kingscrowning.com with code STRONGAF10Save 10% on your order of Sea Moss at infiniteage.com with code STRONGAF10Intro Music credit: Never Lose by Chief (P.S.A. album)Support the show

I've known him for 20 plus years and any time I've ever seen him at a show (which is usually where I see him)  he's always laughing and giggling and just having a great time. You see, Bruce absolutely loves art and is a very knowledgeable former art professional having just retired after 30 years as Executive Director and Chief Curator at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.At first glance, you may get the impression that contemporary art was Bruce's main focus at the museum, but don't let that fool you. He knows an incredible amount on the subject of Native American art. His father and mother collected prehistoric and then historic Indian art, which got Bruce's artistic entanglement going very early in life, resulting in him becoming one of the foremost authorities on Native American paintings, from both historic to contemporary - as well as Zuni fetishes. It was a longer interview than normal, not because of any particular reason other than Bruce is such an interesting individual. I saw her speak at the Johnson County Community College on March 12 and she autographed her copy of the book with that date on it .. it would be the last thing this jazz host would do in the old world of ours that is long gone and prove to be the most important autograph I would ever fetch .. Her story of getting home, the recovery, how Dexter would have done during this quarantine and much more was delved into .. She’s a jazz gem .. So, enjoy .. Click here to listen.Order the book Sophisticated Giant - https://www.amazon.com/Sophisticated-Giant-Legacy-Dexter-Gordon/dp/0520280644Neon Jazz is a radio program airing since 2011. Eric is the Waste Reduction manger at The University of Kansas. He handles administrative duties for KU Recycling as well as  other issues on campus related to municipal solid waste such as collection scheduling, vendor relations, market conditions, and community partnerships/outreach. With almost 10 years in sustainable waste management, Eric focuses on a holistic approach to waste focusing on reduction, recycling, and fiscal responsibility. While at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park Kansas he oversaw the development and operation of the first in-vessel compost system at an educational institution in the state. Eric is certified as a Compost Site Manager from the University of Maine, a board member of the Kansas Organization of Recyclers and the YP Representative for the Sunflower Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America. Eric attended Johnson County Community College and The University of Kansas. Eric Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Leading waste reduction in large organizations Recycling is not the answer What is need to move towards a circular economy Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Eric's Final Five Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would say keep a good attitude and keep a sense of humor. Sense of humor would be the most important thing. I think it's very easy to get bogged down when you do this work day after day and see the challenges that we're up against, but I think it's important to keep your eye on the prize so to speak, or you just not get bogged down by the work we do. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I'm really excited about the push to more of a circular economy and seeing how the manufacturers are going to come up with ways to maybe use some of the new commodities that we're trying to find homes for here in the United States. I think there's a big opportunity right now for innovation, so looking forward to seeing that in the next decade or so. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? I would say my favorite is Junkyard Planet by Adam Minter. It's almost outdated now with China in the last two years, but it kind of broke down where your aluminum can goes after it goes into the recycling bin and its journey across the sea and into a container ship. So it's a great background on waste management. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in the work that you do? I'm a big fan of the CURC webinar series, so that's College and University Recycling Coalition. About every month they do a new one when the school starts back up. I try to stay on those, to kind of see what colleagues are doing across the country. Lots of great ideas. Solid Waste Association of North America is kind of an industry trade group for waste management. They have a lot of of great resources and learning opportunities as well. I'd say those are my two main ones and then I try to network as much as possible with colleagues Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work you're leading at the University of Kansas. We're at recycle.ku.udu. KU Recycling is also on Instagram, even though I'm still learning how to use it effectively as a recycling guy. We are on Twitter as well. I'm on Linkedin if anybody wants to be professional and reach out on Linkedin, I'm there too. That's probably where our social media outreach is right now. We're not on Snapchat. We're not that hip.

Eddie V's Prime Seafood on 47th Street, in the Country Club Plaza, serving quality seafood and hand-carved steaks in a relaxed, lounge atmosphere. Owned by Orlando-based Darden Restaurants, it's a sister concept to The Capitol Grille and Seasons 52. It won't be the first restaurant on the plaza tempting diners with similar fare, but managing partner David Dworsky says its indulgent seafood dishes and personalized service coupled with a charismatic lounge atmosphere will make Eddie V's a destination for locals and tourists alike. “It is our goal to indulge our guests at every turn, creating a personalized level of care and service that matches the high quality cuisine and atmosphere,” Dworsky says. With live music nightly, Eddie V's is looking create a true lounge environment in the restaurant's V Lounge, a space that will feature classic cocktails and an award-winning wine list with more than 200 bottles from around the world. An expansive oval-shaped bar top surrounded by cocktail tables and elevated booth seating fills the lounge, plus a piano that will be put to good use by local jazz trios seven days a week. The menu, which is mostly seafood, will also feature quality hand-cut steaks. Seafood dishes span the culinary spectrum from modern Asian to southern cuisine. Standout items include the Point Judith Calamari appetizer, served with a kung pao-style sauce, roasted cashews and crisp noodles, while the jumbo lump crab cake, sautéed Maryland-style with spicy chive remoulade highlights a New England flavor profile. Entrées follow a similar pattern: Alaskan Halibut is served with a miso glaze, sugar snap peas and shiitake mushrooms, while the swordfish steak is broiled and served with fresh lump crab, avocado, cilantro and red chile. Although Eddie V's is a chain, a trio of local ladies will be heading up the restaurant, including executive chef Crystal Morris, who joined Eddie V's after cooking for The Capital Grille in both Kansas City and Minneapolis. Morris and sous chef Shelby Fahrni were trained at Johnson County Community College culinary arts program in Kansas City; service manager Rachel Thompson rounds out the trio. Construction is already underway on what will be the 14th location of Eddie V's and the first in Missouri. The 10,000-square-foot space seats 318 inside, plus an outdoor patio. Dworsky explains that Darden Restaurants inherited the name when they purchased Eddie V's Prime Seafood in 2011. “But, I tell my staff that each one of them shoulders the responsibility of being Eddie V every night in the restaurant,” he says. “I want them to know that they are empowered with making each guest feel special and cared for.” Eddie V's, 700 W. 47th St., Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri, 816.531.2537, eddiev.com @EddieV's #LiveItUp #SlackerMorningShow101theFox @RGKC @GKCRA #TMobile

CBO Barbara Larson took a winding road into finance administration. She landed in her executive vice president for finance and administrative services at Johnson County Community College through environmental economics and solar manufacturing. But the allure of the campus was too great to resist, and within a few years, she brought the breadth of her skills to the community college. “I’ve learned to ask questions when I don’t know, and I hope I’m a good listener,” Larson says. “I work hard to understand other people’s perspectives and attempt to contribute where I can.” Her mentor experiences drive her leadership style today, having learned from a past president and career journalist the skills of asking thorough questions to understand complex issues. “Change is a challenge anywhere you go.” At the community college however, “we’re better suited to respond quickly in a continuing education environment. … That’s an advantage we have because the structures are already there.”
