“On 5th September 2022, full of excitement for what lay ahead, I began my run from Land's End to John O'Groats to show others that despite life throwing curveballs our way we can still achieve. I intended to cover a distance of 40-50 miles a day for 20 days, a total of approximately 855 miles, aiming to become the world's fastest female, with single-sided deafness, to complete this journey by foot. However, after 4 days of running in continual torrential rain, things went very wrong on day 5." During this episode Sara shares more about her run from Lands End to John O'Groats, the challenges, the setbacks and how she moved forward after failure. We discuss in detail her recovery, the changes she made and how she moved forward and tried again. This is an episode about endurance running, passion for making a difference and never giving up. Sara is a brain tumour survivor who is giving back. “Brain tumours kill more adults and children under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet historically just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease.” Sara is fundraising for British Acoustic Neuroma Association and Manchester Skull Base Foundation (FBT). Sara is also the founder of: The Beyond Recovery Project. “It's all about bringing together others on the same or similar journey, creating a ‘safe' space and sense of community, where brain tumour survivors can share experiences and discover how to push beyond the physical and psychological barriers they face together. It's very much nature based, so walks, hikes, challenges. Lots of talking therapy - because you can't beat sharing what you're going through with someone else who has been in that place. It also aims to bridge the gap in some services post treatment, when you're considered ‘fixed'.” Upcoming events in 2024 May - Toubkal with a group of brain tumour survivors June - Hiking the Langtang valley, Nepal. September - The Wadi Rum Ultra (now known as Ultra X Jordan). 220km over 5 days in the Wadi Rum desert. We first spoke with Sara: 15th March 2022 - Overcome fear and achieve your potential. Dr. Joseph Yi is a Board-Certified Addiction Psychiatrist who specializes in Holistic Psychiatry and Detoxification. After graduation from medical school, Dr Yi went on to do his psychiatry residency at the Cooper University Hospital. Since starting his solo private practice in 2009, Dr Yi has helped patients throughout Bucks County, PA overcome their dependency to opiates, alcohol, and other substances through his Modern Detox Program, which provides an individualized tapering plan on an outpatient basis, as an alternative to going into an inpatient facility for treatment. I've been reading a book with the rather haunting title, Beyond the Ashes: Cases of Reincarnation from the Holocaust. The author, Yonassan Gershom, is a rabbi who is well versed in the kabbalistic, mystical strain within Judaism. His book concerns cases of individuals, Jewish and Gentile, who have spoken to him about what seem like “memories” of having perished in the Holocaust when they were children. . . Abigail L. Rosenthal is Professor Emerita of Philosophy, Brooklyn College of The City University of New York. She is the author of A Good Look at Evil, a Pulitzer Prize nominee, now appearing in an expanded second edition and as audiobooks. Dr. Rosenthal writes a weekly column for “Dear Abbie: The Non-Advice Column,” where she explores the situation of women. She thinks women's lives are highly interesting. She's the editor of The Consolations of Philosophy: Hobbes's Secret; Spinoza's Way by her father, Henry M. Rosenthal. She's written numerous articles that can be accessed at Academia.edu .

Matt and I have an interesting talk that includes protecting your sobriety, and how not doing so led to Matt having a relapse. Matt battled alcoholism from his late teens deep into his adult life. He has been sober since April 8th, 2019. We dig into his family history of alcoholism and how it was a part of the demise of several family members. Seeing alcohol use as a child caused him to think that his excessive use of alcohol and at times other substances were quite normal and acceptable. Matt also shares the process he uses as a recovery coach and sound therapist with his client. He works with his clients in a way that helps them develop tools to cope with past traumas as well as handle new adversities. In addition, Matt is the host of the Beyond Recovery podcast. 'Beyond Recovery' is a podcast hosted by Matt, where guests come on to share their journeys to, and through, recovery. Matt battled alcohol dependency from his late teens into his early 30s. He was a daily drinker from age 21 to 30. At age 27, Matt hospitalized himself with acute pancreatitis. While this was initially framed as the wake-up call Matt needed, after 3 days in the hospital, he was back out drinking within 24hrs of being released. At age 30, Matt hit a rock bottom moment which led to 3 years + of sobriety. At a friend's wedding, he decided he would attempt “moderation” again, which he tried for the next several years. When Matt's dad passed away suddenly in late 2018 (he had been a heavy drinker his whole adult life) Matt decided on the weekend of his father's Celebration of Life that it was time to sober up once again! That was in April 2019. Matt is now back at 3 years+ sober!

About an hour before I was scheduled to give shiur tonight (5/26/22), I received the terrible news that my rebbi - Rabbi Moskowitz (Meir ben Esther Malka) - will no longer be able to continue dialysis. Because I couldn't manage to take my mind off of the imminent implications of this, I decided to do what Rabbi Moskowitz would do in such a situation: give shiur. I chose this topic for its immediate practical relevance. Please pardon any errors or deficiencies in the shiur, whether due to my hasty preparation (I threw this together around 30 minutes before shiur started) or due to my emotional state (which is evident in the first few minutes of shiur). Perhaps some people might deem it inappropriate for me to give a shiur on this topic at this time. I don't care. I am a tefilah teacher, and if there's any right time to give a shiur on this topic, that time is now. Ari Bleicher, "Tefillat Shav: The Limits of Prayer as a Means to Understanding its Transformative Nature" https://hakirah.org/Vol%2012%20Bleicher.pdfרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות ברכות י:כורמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר שופטים, הלכות אבל יד:א,וספר החינוך מצוה תקיב"How to Say Tehilim for the Sick Without Violating Halacha" https://kolhaseridim.blogspot.com/2017/08/parashas-shoftim-how-to-say-tehilim-for.html----------This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Alex K. In this episode of the Find Your SPARK Podcast, Nicole introduces The SPARK Initiative's 2 new employees, Mari and Chad. Mari is our new Research and Development Coordinator, and Chad is our Executive Assistant. Since their first day, they have been pretty busy learning their roles, completing the Insight to Well-Being curriculum training with Beyond Recovery, and Mari has also done some shadowing in our local support group with Selah Freedom's sex-trafficking survivors. In this podcast, you can hear them share what they have learned so far, some personal insights and what they look forward to being a part of the SPARK Team!
Parents and teachers describe changed relationships with school as the 2021-2022 academic year ends. For many, the new normal was difficult after COVID-19 fractured the educational system. Actor Dennis Hopper and his wife, Brooke Hayward, became the nexus of art and film during 1960s LA. They're the focus of a new book called “Everybody Thought We Were Crazy.”
In this 8-minute MEET THE TEAM, BEYOND RECOVERY talk, Pete Mears, aka 3PPete, tells his story from a trauma-filled childhood, to full-on addiction, self-harming, and suicide to recovery and leading a passionate life of love and gratitude. Austen Washington (Eps 7, 10.5, and 11; @sober.asa on Instagram) joins the show as cohost in this very special episode with our friend up North, Matt Gardiner, who is hitting his stride in sobriety and finding ways to thrive in it. As the title of his podcast indicates, he is taking his alcohol-free life to the next level by moving "Beyond Recovery" and into deeper and more meaningful levels of allowing himself to be his truest self. Our conversation centered around Matt's forays into the world of plant medicine as a powerful tool in his midlife recovery process. If you're not familiar with psychedelics, please give this episode a listen anyway: you'll learn a lot from Matt's experiences and Austen's studies into this world which is increasingly gaining mainstream acceptance in Western society. Back in 2020, I had an idea. After interviewing many entrepreneurs in recovery I realized so many of them had so much to offer. Much like when I was new to recovery, I found others to help guide me in the direction of learning to live a sober life. After a stint of complacency in my 6th year of sobriety, I knew that if I didn't find my passion for recovery again I could very well be one of the statistics of people who relapse and that was the last thing I wanted. So I set on an amazing journey to discover my purpose and as a result have been able to connect with so many amazing people in recovery who have done extraordinary things to drastically improve their lives. This summit was created to inspire people in recovery to enhance their lives and create a life so good for themselves that they never want to go back to their old way of living. Dreams do come true! Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and believe it's possible. That's how this was created. This special bonus episode is edited from an interview with Tamar Medford on her podcast The Road Beyond Recovery, and I feel our conversation should be shared. We talk about energy healing and how it can help people with trauma and addiction. Speaking about observing patterns, accepting existing reality, how to feel safe in your body, and why some people can't seem to meditate and the relation healing has to recovery. Enjoy! Opening Up with Energy Work Before her interview with me, we had a session together to experience energy healing. In Tamar and I worked on her energy in a session prior to this interview, Tamar discovered how to open up using energy work. She also experienced a shift in her energy between our first and second sessions. My clients call me the “energetic plumber,” because I work with individuals to clean out patterns constricting their life forces. I can see and sense these patterns in and around people's bodies, around their energy fields, auric fields, and generational patterns. Listen in to discover the energetic backbones of my session with Tamar, how your body can physically hold onto trauma, how observing patterns can lead to healing, and why drugs and alcohol blur our ability to recognize what we need to let go of in order to move forward with healing. What hope is there for people incarcerated in the Criminal Justice System? Is there any chance of rehabilitation for career criminals? In this inspiring podcast we hear from two former prisoners who learned about the Three Principles whilst in prison. They explain how their lives have since transformed and how they now support other prisoners and families to reconnect with their wellbeing and resilience. Derrick Mason and Omar Wilson were participants on the 'Beyond Recovery' programme run by Jacqueline Hollows. Jacqueline (or Mama J as she's known to them) explains how she started her social enterprise as a rookie, but enthusiastic practitioner. The photo above is of Jacqueline and Derrick - he's now a Director of Beyond Recovery. In this conversation we explore why the Beyond Recovery programme has been so successful and reflect on whether there is a chance for this kind of work to be shared more extensively in prisons. Have you ever heard the phrase once an addict, always an addict? I've certainly heard it during my lifetime. It is a creative bumper sticker to describe who you are—but is that truly who you are as a person? Chris, James, and Steve go on a journey with Doug Nielsen to find out what to do when you are wanting to take that next step, the step beyond recovery.I know some of us who are struggling (or have struggled) with an addiction are thinking, “I can't even fathom what life looks like without addiction.” Well, what we need is a new identity after recovery. When we are recovered, we need to know who we are. Doug says, “It is impossible, over time, to behave differently than the way you see yourself. That is the governor of my behavior.” A lot of people who are struggling with addiction trade their true identities for the fake one that only focuses on the addiction. This is the way the enemy of our hearts works. The adversary wants to stifle our purpose in this life. He will attack the person who Heavenly Father sees in us.In fact, Doug talks about a client who said that he did not know who he was. Doug told him that the man he saw in the 15 minutes they had been together was a man, who is loved, who is courageous, and who fights for the underdog. The words that describe a person are the reason for their existence, their purpose, and the larger story. The most important phrase that Christ said was “I am…” He described himself in powerful ways. So, how can we find out who we are? We must take a risk. Life is full of risks. We believe things through fear or faith. They both have the same definition. We believe in something that cannot be seen but will ultimately happen. We must take life by the helm. This so happens to be the title of Doug's book. Doug believes there are three things that we can do to jumpstart our progress into being recovered. We must slow down. We can do the 4-4-8 breathing exercise. It only takes a few seconds and will help us calm down. We need to listen. When we listen after we have slowed down, God will speak to us. He has a lot he wants to tell us. We have just taken that away from him by living a life at 64,000 RPMs. Our brains and bodies were not meant to live life that fast. We must act on it. The third one is the hardest to do, we often find ourselves falling back into the same routines because they are comfortable. There are great ways for us to listen. We must ask our friends, family, and Heavenly Father what three words describe us; our true selves. Then we take those three words and read them in the morning, throughout the day, and during the end of day evaluation. We think about those words constantly. We ask ourselves, “What examples of these words have I done today?” We will connect ourselves to these three words. If we take a 90 day challenge and apply these three words in our lives, we will become the three words. Bottom line, we must know our purpose. Doug ends by saying that we actually choose our purpose instead of discovering it. Today we're talking … to Fred Davis.FRED DAVIS is a spiritual unteacher. He studied and practiced Eastern wisdom for twenty-five years prior to 2006 when seeking ended, and his true awakening commenced. He is the creator and editor of AwakeningClarityNow.com, which launched in 2011. Fred is a long-time sober and is the author of six books including ‘Beyond Recovery: Non-Duality & the 12 steps' This book has been described as a "bridge book" that introduces Nonduality to people in recovery, and recovery to people who are already involved in nondual spirituality. Very often in recovery, participants will hit a "plateau" in whatever system they're using to clean up and clear up. They feel like they've outgrown the rigid dogma sometimes found in some recovery programs, but they still have a pull toward the relative safety of their group or tradition.Beyond Recovery: Nonduality and the Twelve Steps offers a way to satisfy both calls. Beyond Recovery is being used as a basic text for discussion groups in the US and Australia.Fred is very happily married, is deeply devoted to this teaching, his beautiful wife, and his extraordinary canine companions, Willy and Jack. Omar grew up in an area where, as a young boy, he felt he needed protection from the outside influences around him. But he had none. So Omar learned to be cool and tough to protect himself and his family. That thinking led him to sell drugs, and he ending up in prison. Omar came across Beyond Recovery and the 3 Principles while in prison. He went to the first meeting mostly for the tea and sugar… but curiosity opened him up to listening and hearing something new. The 3PGC's podcast called “We're Listening. A Community Where All Voices Are Heard” hosted by Rob Cook. Three Principles Global Community is a collection of practitioners, coaches, and community leaders from all over the globe who point clients toward their innate health and wisdom. We were deeply touched by our conversation with Derrick Mason. Derrick shares with us his journey from learning the understanding shared by Sydney Banks while in prison, to his role as Director of Beyond Recovery today. Derrick's initial insight involved seeing the psychological innocence of his mother, and the impact of believing the misunderstanding that everything in his life was her fault. During the Beyond Recovery program, he attended in prison, at first just like so many of us he was taking in the understanding from a purely intellectual place. But eventually, after several weeks of still showing up, the understanding moved from his head to his heart. He now always follows that feeling as a guidepost. Derrick teaches us about the power of showing up as ourselves, and how that's all we ever need. He can notice his insecure thinking and then remember that the opportunities he's been offered have come as a result of being himself and removing the mask he once thought was necessary to be successful.Derrick's story is such a powerful testament to the fact that our experience of life is always being created from the inside out. He shares that while he was in the worst physical place imaginable, prison, he was feeling better than he ever has before. And if he can feel that way in prison, and trapped while on the beach with money in his pocket, then he could trust in the truth of this paradigm-shifting understanding. This episode explores:The feeling comes from withinLean into uncomfortability knowing comfortability is your true natureForgiving yourself leads to seeing others' psychological innocenceAlways show up as you -- it's healing for everyone around youVulnerability is our strengthFreedom is available to us anywhereThis narrative is not intended to detract from the need for comprehensive reform to the justice system in the United States and beyond.Show NotesBuffering skills: Angus may need to insert some buffers between his appointments in his calendar. The tango of death: the anger game - it takes two to get into entanglementXL comfort blanket: the feeling of being embraced by our true nature Derrick Mason learned about this understanding while in prison in 2017. He was impacted by the truth and simplicity in Sydney Bank’s books, as well as the love and trust of Jacqueline Hollows and the Beyond Recovery team. Derrick was then able to see the true potential within himself, which had only ever been limited by his own thinking. During this episode of A Richer Life, host Rich Weingart speaks with Mike Govoni, a certified holistic health and wellness coach and a certified addiction recovery coach. Mike speaks about being in recovery for over 15 years, his coaching program called Healing Beyond Recovery and how he continues to do this in his own life, and how he fought back against trauma and contemplation of suicide. Episode Highlights: Rich Weingart introduces Mike Govoni, who shares his background. Mike Govoni found out his father was a pediphile priest. Mike Govoni was taken away from his mother at age three. Sexual molestation happened to Mike, but not at the hands of his father. Mike discussed his past addiction issues. How did thoughts of suicide arise in his life? In what ways did meditation practices benefit Mike? What was a catalyst for Mike to start healing? We must create a more flexible nervous system. We all have self-energy and it is who we are. Our true being is loving awareness. COVID-19 is bringing us together and apart at the same time. Life is traumatic, but we need the courage to heal it. What is Mike Govoni doing to live A Richer Life? 3 Key Points: Trauma creates a sense of disconnection and dysregulation in our nervous systems. Addiction is an attempt to regulate and restore connection, where the arousal cycles potentially last well past rehab treatment. We don't come to consciousness without pain. Trauma is an illness of not being alive in the present moment. Tweetable Quotes: “I'm not a victim. I look at everything that happened to me as a catalyst to my spiritual evolution as me growing as a man, growing as a professional in the World of owning my own business.” – Mike Govoni “We all have a story and it is up to us whether or not we want to look within and discover and befriend all of the parts of ourselves so we can bring ourselves fully to light. ” – Mike Govoni “In order for us to express our light, that also requires us to look at our darkness.” – Mike Govoni “When we are on our path to healing, we have to recognize that we are in some sort of pain and discomfort. Something is going on that we need to address.” – Mike Govoni “When there is no awareness that is present in our life, we take the mind and the fictitious stories that begin to secrete from the mind. We take them as being real.” – Mike Govoni “I am not anti-medicine or Western approach. I think it is lacking a lot of things. But, the wisdom in me knew I had to find an alternative route. So, that is when I left mainstream medicine.” – Mike Govoni Resources Mentioned: mikegovoni.com Mike Govoni on social media: Linkedin Instagram Facebook YouTube

In this special episode of Wisdom Entrepreneurs, hosted by Beyond Truth's own, Omar Wilson alongside Beyond Recovery's Jacqueline Hollows. Tonight they spoke about judgment, and how it shows up in all sort of guises, but no matter how it shows up we know, that it is still only thought and as thoughts are transient you can't hold them back, at best you can just notice them when they shows up and see them for what they really are and as Sydney Banks said, "Thought is not reality; but it is through our Thought that our realities are created" thus creating a reality in which we are often our own most critical critics and maybe some of the true love and compassion that we often reserve for others should be bestowed upon ourselves a little more often.

In today’s conversation, you get to hear from Paul Lock. Paul used to spend the majority of his time in his head. He was constantly planning, hypothesizing, and dwelling on his thinking, believing it to be a positive and productive use of his time. Paul describes how this radically changed for him, once he saw that he was not his thinking. This was an insight that changed the rest of his life. Paul goes on to share his experiences with inner knowing, and how surrendering to these inner “nudges” can set you free. Paul Lock has always had a fascination with psychology and philosophy and, during his time in sales, came across the work of Sydney Banks. Since 2011, Paul has immersed himself in learning more about these Principles and as a result, experienced profound changes in all areas of his life. In 2014, Paul left sales and began working with individuals and businesses to help increase their overall performance, productivity and mental wellbeing. In 2015, Paul also began delivering programs to men in Prison with Beyond Recovery and also co-founded, Mind Spa. Paul picked up a paintbrush for the first time in 2012 and in 2017 rented his first art studio. Paul has since held two successful solo exhibitions with many of his paintings bought by private collectors, internationally.
A great conversation with Jacqueline Hollows from Beyond Recovery who works with some awesome guys in the prison system in the UK on a misunderstanding of Freedom. Listening it's clear that it gives Jacqueline a great perspective on the word free, which leads to a wonderful conversation on the perspective of life that makes such a difference and regardless of whether you are physically incarcerated or living your life, you can be in prison if you don't see how your experience is created.

Join Anna - a McVety Grant Recipient - to learn how a normal person finds success! Anna Debenham Bio: Between 2009 and 2016 Anna built a successful business coaching practice in the UK, but her past addictions and her ongoing search for inner peace led her to discover the 3 principles and a program at the One Thought Institute in London. Moving back to Portland in 2016, Anna brought her work to prisons in Oregon and The Insight Alliance was born. Anna has worked in many different countries, industries, and environments. She does that in a new and sustainable way: By looking at the mind. In a very human, common sense way she helps facilitate the unlocking of peoples minds and point towards the resilience within them. The result is they increase their wellbeing, mental health, and make different choices either while still in prison or when they get out. She explains that the only thing that truly can make somebody change is an internal shift - and that is what all her work is about. To check out more from what she is talking about, check out this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv7lMMdBCYE In this podcast you will hear stories about her own journey of doing this work, aswell as examples from her students in prison. This is the solution to truly rehabilitating and preventing, and looks for peoples mental health. About Insight Alliance The Insight Alliance uncovers the natural resilience and innate mental health all human beings already have inside them. It teaches a simple understanding of how our feelings, experience and state of mind works; an understanding that enables people to thrive in any circumstances. Prospective outcomes of programs include a decrease in stress and depression; improved relationships, increased feelings of connection and trust, reduced levels of obsessive and judgmental thinking; increased desire to access education/jobs; a decrease in the probability of recidivism and/ or relapse and generally feeling more of their natural wellbeing.About Anna Debenham: My passion for nurturing health, wellbeing and resilience in myself and my clients reflects my own expanding grasp of the infinite possibilities of life that supports a peaceful and balanced state of mind. The depth and breadth of my experience ranges from being part of a multi-disciplinary healing and support team for at-risk boys at the London organization, StreetWise Youth; establishing an outpatient program for a drug and alcohol recovery centre in Melbourne, Australia; to working as a coach and facilitator for Westminster council in London. My career shifted when I came across this groundbreaking way of helping people understand the principles behind our state of mind. My experience working in a UK prison with Beyond Recovery ignited a love of helping those incarcerated and those transitioning to their freedom. Now I bring all my experience together as Director of The Insight Alliance. The Insight Alliance is partnered with the YWCA as we expand to Coffee Creek woman’s prison and SCI in Salem. The programs continue to grow by word of mouth and by post-release individuals that stay connected to and work with the Alliance. The organic evolution of The Insight Alliance demonstrates the boundless potential and creative possibility of inspired people, and the wonderful power of fresh thought.

We know for some of you, this episode is going to be a tough one. We’re going to speak the truth in love because we’re committed to integrity, but at the same time we want to give you hope because this IS hope, and recovery of your marriage IS possible. If you’re at the point where you think your marriage is fine, I hope you will take from this post the need to be proactive. Don’t want until you’re wondering if you can recover your marriage to take action – take action now! A Marriage Checkup If you want an objective evaluation of your marriage, download this assessment tool. Even if you feel your marriage is doing great, this might highlight some blind spots you weren’t aware of, so that you can work on them. Remember it’s only a measurement tool: what you do with the information is what really matters!I Want It! Personally, we don’t believe that any marriage is ever beyond recovery. We do believe that in some cases, like an abusive marriage, it is not safe to recover the marriage until the abuse issue is addressed thoroughly. We do not have any judgment for folks that have decided to move on – we’re not God and it’s not our job to judge that – but if you’re out there today and you just want someone to tell you there’s hope, then listen, there is hope! We’re going to talk about a number of things that challenge that hope, but we will end up with some things that you hope, so stick with us. Indicators That a Marriage is Moving Beyond Recovery Research indicates that the following behaviours may be warning signs that a marriage is headed past recovery and towards divorce. A Lot of Spouse Hostility Hostility without warmth is a major warning sign that your marriage longevity is seriously threatened. A study was conducted of over 400 couples married an average of 18 years. The study went on for five years and looked into the hostility of these marriages, the divorces that happened, and the quality of the interaction between spouses.[i] Hostility became a theme in the marriages that ended, so let’s look at hostility for a moment. The researchers looked for the frequency of how often a spouse had: gotten angry been critical shouted or yelled, ignored their spouse threatened to do something that would upset their spouse tried to make him or her feel guilty, or said that their spouse had made him or her unhappy. On the other hand, warmth looked like times when their spouse had: asked for his/her opinion listened to his/her point of view let them know that he or she cares acted in a loving and affectionate manner let them know that s/he is appreciated helped them something important to him/her had a good laugh with them, or acted supportive or understanding. Here’s what they found: “In every instance, greater marital instability was associated with more hostility and less warmth in marital interactions.”[ii] This warmth vs. hostility dynamic was so apparent that the researchers were able to predict with an 80% level of accuracy which couples would divorce the following year. All they had to look for was high levels of hostility and lesser levels of warmth. The researchers summarized their findings with the following statement, “Couples observed to exhibit high levels of hostile, angry, critical, stubborn, inconsiderate, defiant, or rejecting behavior that is not counterbalanced by considerate, cooperative, or affectionate behavior were more likely to perceive high levels of hostility in their marital interactions, were more likely to have unstable marriages, and were more likely to actually separate or divorce.”[iii] All that to say, that hostility needs to be counterbalanced with warmth in a marriage, or it will have lasting negative effects. We all get our ugly on once in a while unfortunately, but if those times are balanced with a lot of warmth and affection, it will serve your marriage much better. Our first guest is Dr. Sam Tsemberis, CEO of Pathways to Housing, a "wet" housing program which does not require clients to be abstinent before they are housed. Our second guest is Dr. Helga Matzko, founder of the Gestalt Institute of Rhode Island. Helga uses Gestalt Psychology and Seligman's Positive Psychology to treat addictions and she will be telling us about the Beyond Recovery program.
Addiction is a response to pain and trauma. Reaching out and making yourself vulnerable is challenging when you've been traumatized. You may not trust people and you may not trust the process. So what needs to be done to discharge the trauma off your body and break free from the symptoms – addiction being one of them?In this episode, Duane talks with Mike Govoni, an integrative holistic recovery coach who specializes in healing not only addiction but trauma as well. He has extensive experience in helping addicts overcome trauma and free themselves from addiction, a path that he has walked personally. Mike was traumatized in utero, which led to his early-onset illness in long-term recovery. This set him up for addiction. As a result of childhood trauma, pain, and suffering, Mike escaped through alcohol and drugs at an early age. He smoked his first joint at 11. By the time he was 18 years old, he got addicted to oxycontin – the first substance that took his soul out of him. He had always thought it was under control until he finally had to reach out for help. When he was hit with depression, his mom brought him to a 12-step meeting which was his first exposure to life in recovery. At that point, he got sober and has been for about 16 years now.Interestingly, he never knew he was suffering from unprocessed unhealed trauma. It took the universe to conspire for his awakening and for him to have a mystical experience that led to profound healing. That's what led him on the journey to what he does today.Today, Mike and Duane are going to have an in-depth conversation about trauma, early trauma, how it hides in the body, and how we can begin to process through that trauma to be able to release it, find freedom, and be our authentic selves. In this episode, you will hear:Mike's entry into addiction and where his childhood trauma came fromHow addiction is related to traumaWhat keeps people from seeking helpWhy trauma starts in uteroWhat trauma really means and how it's been programmed in the subconsciousHow our nervous system can help discharge the traumaThe role of others in the process of healing yourselfKey Quotes:[07:18] - “Addiction is a response to pain and trauma. And reaching out and making yourself vulnerable is challenging when you've been traumatized.”[07:58] - "If you look at the work of Stanislav Grof, who is a well-known psychotherapist, he talked about birth as the first real trauma." [09:28] - "Trauma is really misunderstood. There's a lot of different definitions of trauma."[10:52] - “You can be in long-term recovery, and still be suffering from the symptoms of trauma.”[13:23] - “Many of us have traumas that we have suppressed and repressed so much that it's below consciousness.”[27:11] - “The nervous system naturally knows how to move through the cycle and discharge the trauma."[32:56] - “When you're stuck in survival mode, you don't have access to your creativity or have access to the full potential of who you are."[33:25] - “It's no wonder why people in addiction isolate and don't have access to this social engagement system. We're social primates. We are built for connection. We are built for touch.”Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast? We'd love for you to subscribe if you haven't yet.
