In this episode of Revolutionary Women, I speak with Kyla Reynolds P'an, Head of Development for Pangea Trust, a UK–Portugal charity building Europe's first large-scale elephant sanctuary in Portugal's Alentejo region. Pangea Trust is creating a sanctuary for elephants currently living in captivity across Europe, offering a lifelong home designed for recovery, space, and social connection. We discuss what it takes to build an elephant sanctuary from the ground up, from fundraising and public awareness to infrastructure, international logistics, and preparing for the arrival of Kariba, the sanctuary's first elephant, expected in 2026. Beyond wildlife conservation, this conversation explores career evolution, living between cultures, and how seasons of work, including raising a family, shape the paths we take later. Kyla shares what it looks like to step into a new chapter with clarity and purpose. If you're interested in elephant conservation, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy in Europe, or stories of women creating change in their communities, this episode offers both depth and perspective. Kyla Reynolds P'an is Head of Development for Pangea Trust, a UK/Portugal based charity building Europe's largest and most comprehensive elephant sanctuary in the Alentejo region of Portugal. The sanctuary will serve as a compassionate solution for Europe's zoos and circuses seeking a life-long home for their elephants. Kyla holds a Master's in Journalism and is the mom of two teenagers. She has more than 20 years of front-line development experience under her belt, including the Smithsonian Institution, Boston University, Harvard Medical School and Mass Audubon. In South Africa, high earners face a 45% marginal rate with limited deductions, making Section 12B of the Income Tax Act a powerful tool to ease the tax burden while investing in renewable energy. In an interview with Biznews, Mitchel Fieldgate, wealth manager and alternative investment lead at Pangea Wealth, revealed they have facilitated R1 billion in deductions over the last two years. He noted that while this provides relief for high earners, it has also mobilised billions into commercial solar projects, reducing reliance on Eskom and alleviated load shedding. Fieldgate explained who might not benefit from the tax relief, clarified that it is not a tax loophole, and stressed that the 12B opportunities are not a one-size-fits-all solution. He suggested the government introduce similar tax breaks for repairing other infrastructure, such as water systems or roads, “because it mobilises money and there's no leakage.”

Join the Extraordinary Travel Festival in Bangkok, October 22-25, 2026. Use code BANGKOK to save on your ticket. One of the goals of the Extraordinary Travel Festival is to bring the leaders of the travel industry together. Why? We want to make your travels richer and more meaningful. Hearing from these thought leaders keeps you abreast of changes and benefits that can help you. We have founders and leaders like Ian Cumming of Travel Massive, Stefan Krasowski of Every Passport Stamp, and Orest Zub of NomadMania. I am excited to be speaking with Matt Gray on this episode who will also be joining us at ETF. He is the founder of Pangea, whose goal is to connect and explore the world, and who better to do that with than friends who share your same passion. Download the app so you can better connect with travelers around the world. Since this interview with Matt, Pangea has been on a roll, acquiring and integrating several other Digital Nomad & Travel Community apps into their core platform. Their general thesis and strategy is that by consolidating the very fragmented consumer travel app space, they can deliver a best in class experience and become the all in one platform that many are referring to as the "Strava for Travel" So far they've integrated Overlap & Nomadago, two leading community apps, bringing together nearly 50,000 users who have downloaded one of these apps into their core Pangea platform. And consider meeting Matt and other nomads at Nomad Week in Cape Town. Want to save $50? Please use code ETF50. Remember to join us in Bangkok at the ETF, please use code BANGKOK to save on your ticket. (ETF alumni contact me directly to get your special discount.) The event will be October 22-25, 2026 in Bangkok. We continually have news to share with you. As an example, we will have a Travel Tech panel, hosted by Ian Cumming of Travel Massive, with 2 announced panelists, 193er and tech expert Joel Oleson, and Matt Gray as well. They will be talking all things tech and what you need to know to make your travels better. On Travel Content Creation Day, we will have a panel of video travel content. The first panelist is Barbs, you might know him for his uber successful channel, Geography Now with over 4 million subscribers! More panelists to be announced. I was in Bangkok while Matt was in Cape Town, please listen in and enjoy.

In this episode, Jiří Žák describes the two main orogenies whose remnants figure prominently in central European geology: the Cadomian orogeny that lasted from the late Neoproterozoic to the early Cambrian (c. 700 Ma to c. 425 Ma) and the Variscan orogeny that occurred in the late Paleozoic (c. 380 Ma to 280 Ma). The Cadomian took place on the northern margins of Gondwana, only later to rift and travel north to form what was to become Europe. The Variscan was caused by the collision of Gondwana with Laurussia in the final stages of the assembly of the supercontinent Pangea. Both orogenies have been heavily eroded, and we see their imprint in the form of metamorphic rocks, volcanic rocks, granites, and deformation structures. These are scattered across Europe, from southern Britain to eastern Europe.Žák has been studying the geology of central Europe for over 25 years using methods ranging from structural studies in the field to detrital zircon geochronology. He is a Professor in the Institute of Geology and Paleontology at Charles University in Prague.
HEADLINE: Pangea's Mega-Monsoons, Coal Formation, and the Unclassifiable Tully Monster BOOK TITLE: Other Lands, a journey through Earth's Extinct Worlds GUEST AUTHOR NAME: Thomas Halliday 200-WORD SUMMARY: This segment examines the Permian and Carboniferous eras. In the Permian (253 million years ago), the single supercontinent Pangea caused a mega-monsoon system involving extreme seasonal wetness and dryness. Sites like Moradi, Niger, show creatures adapted to this arid environment. Organisms included the bulk herbivore Umoist and the apex predator Gorgonops, a close relative of mammals with large canines. This period was immediately followed by the "Great Dying," the largest mass extinction event in Earth's history. The Carboniferous (390 million years ago) saw the first extensive forests. As trees fell into vast, tropical swamps, the water inhibited decay, leading to the preservation of organic material that eventually formed the world's coal deposits. This process sequestered carbon, contributing to lower atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations later in history. The final topic is the Tully Monster(Tullimonstrum), a small, torpedo-shaped creature with eyes on stalks that remains a profound paleontological mystery. It is intensely debated whether this organism is a vertebrate, and because it has no known descendants, it is classified as an evolutionary experiment that did not pan out.

In this episode, I was lucky enough to interview Keilian Knudsen and Prags Mugunthan, co-founders of Pangea.ai. Keilian and Prags explored their journey from university roommates in Scotland to building a global tech talent platform. Keilian described how growing up in Switzerland with an American mother and Norwegian father gave him a multicultural view of the world and a drive to create something of his own. Prags shared how moving from Sri Lanka to Norway at a young age gave him access to education and opportunity, which shaped his path toward entrepreneurship. Their first ventures included a sandblasting startup and a digital memory bank, both of which failed but pushed them to solve the problem they encountered firsthand—how hard it was to find and hire reliable software developers. That problem led to the birth of Digital Knights, a service-based business that eventually became Pangea. Keilian and Prags candidly shared about the tough early days, including running out of money, borrowing from friends and family, and nearly walking away from it all. What kept them going was their shared vision and complementary strengths. They also emphasized the importance of building repeatable systems and processes, especially after realizing that excessive hustle without structure could limit their growth.Discover how missed hires, borrowed savings, and unwavering conviction led Keilian and Prags to build Pangea in this episode of The First Customer!Guest Info:Pangea.aihttps://www.pangea.aiKeilian Knudsen's LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/keilian/Prags Mugunthan's LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/pragsm/Connect with Jay on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jayaigner/The First Customer Youtube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@thefirstcustomerpodcastThe First Customer podcast websitehttps://www.firstcustomerpodcast.comFollow The First Customer on LinkedInhttp://www.linkedin.com/company/the-first-customer-podcast/
