Dr Rachel Holt is a forest ecologist based out of Nelson BC, and one of the authors of the infamous 'BC's Old Growth Forest: A Last Stand for Biodiversity' Report that was published in 2020, which created a huge wake throughout Canada regarding forestry practices and our diminishing old growth forests. The report and work she did also contributed to the BC Government's Strategic Review of Old Growth Forests which helped outline our current state of affairs and the direction the province needs to move in the future...so in short, Rachel is kind of a big deal in the world of forests. Her and I sat down after working on another project together to chat through some of the details of biodiversity, habitat fragmentation, and what (if anything) is actually happening when it comes to changing the landscape of the forest industry in BC for the better. In this episode Dom Baker sits down with Graeme Marshall, Mitch Ryan, and Laura Waterer. Graeme Marshall lives in Nelson, BC with his wife and their three great teenage kids. He is a BC Certified Teacher and a Professional Member of the Canadian Avalanche Association. Graeme's inspiration for creating the Adventure Tourism Leadership and Safety (ATLAS) Academy developed over years of working as an outdoor educator, guide, and safety tech in a variety of seasons and with a number of organizations. When not leading trips with ATLAS, Graeme tries to get out whitewater canoeing, mountain biking, and ski touring with friends and family. When at home he will likely be strumming a guitar or spinning a record with a wicked cup of coffee by his side. Mitch Ryan got a taste for backcountry skiing in the ATLAS program at LV Rogers High School in Nelson, BC. He started off in the winter world of work as a volunteer patroller, quickly switching to full time as soon as he was old enough. These glory days consisted of winters at Whitewater Ski Resort, the odd tail guiding stint, wildfire firefighting around the Kootenays in the summers, and surfing and ski touring in all the free time he could find. After cutting his teeth in the Kootenays and going through his CAA level 2 he wanted bigger mountains and landed a job as an avalanche technician at a remote gold mine in northern BC, where he still enjoys spending his winters today. Grateful to grow up in the small mountain town of Nelson BC, Laura was an avid skier from a young age. In Grade 12 she first stepped foot in the backcountry as part of the outdoor education program at the local highschool. After spending some years traveling around the world and completing post-secondary education in Vancouver, Laura moved back to the Kootenays for a season of volunteer ski patrol at her home hill of Whitewater Ski Resort. That has since transformed into a 10-year career with the snow safety program starting as a volunteer and moving into the assistant patrol director position, and now full-time forecasting. Passionate about mountain safety and giving back to the community, she volunteers with Nelson Search and Rescue and teaches avalanche education courses on the side. In her spare time, Laura explores the Kootenays with her partner and young son. A great gift for those you love and want to stay healthy and understand the historical reason we are in this mess, my new book Surviving a Viral Pandemic through the lens of a naturopathic medical doctor is available to order at most bookstores including Vroman's in Pasadena, Otter Books in Nelson BC, indigo.ca in Canada and on Amazon. This episode, number 32, deals with the new Covid vaccine. Vaccination is an issue that has divided friends and family for years because of the mandatory laws in California and New York state and will certainly continue to do so with this latest one. I am grateful that for now that vaccines are not mandatory in Canada and hope and pray it will stay that way. The bottom line is...well listen to the episode and see...reflect on what you think about it. Do you have questions? It is your right to choose but there is a definite difference between variolation like that executed by that intrepid pioneer woman Henriette LeJeune (aka Granny Ross who lived near our homestead in the 1700s in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia) and modern day vaccinations. Thank you so much for listening. Please send questions to drheatherh@iCloud.com and I will answer them in time. If you can leave a short review and rating and subscribe and share it really helps to get the message out of healthcare transparency. And if you are looking for more on this line there are many to choose from especially Dr Brian Hooker in an early episode.Keep well and Happy Holidays! XODr Heather

WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe. Episode 063 - In the wee hours of September 5, 1970, after a binge of alcohol and possibly LSD, Dale Merle Nelson, 33, a logger and father of three snapped. In just over an hour he'd murdered 7 residents, including 4 children, of tiny Creston B.C. He had then absconded with another child into the local wilderness. That child, 8-year-old Cathy St. Amand, would also be found butchered where Nelson stated he'd left her, prior to his capture just a day after the massacre; one of the worst in Canadian history. Gary Liss - Zero Waste Planning Expert

Sustainable Nation

Gary Liss has over 45 years of experience in the solid waste and recycling field.  Mr. Liss is a leading advocate of Zero Waste and has helped more communities develop Zero Waste plans than anyone else in the U.S. including: City of Los Angeles Palo Alto, Oakland, Burbank, San Jose, Castro Valley Sanitary District, City of Alameda, Oceanside, Glendale and Del Norte County in CA; Austin (TX); Nelson (BC); Telluride (CO); the Big Island of Hawaii (HI), Arkadelphia (AR) and Fort Collins, CO). He also has helped major businesses (e.g. Sandia National Laboratories and Nestle Purina) and colleges (e.g. California State University Long Beach and California State University Los Angeles) develop Zero Waste Plans. He has helped develop electronic guides on Contracts and Franchises and Managing and Transforming Waste Streams for USEPA. Mr. Liss was the first President of the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council   and now is a GBCI TRUE Zero Waste assessor and instructor.  Mr. Liss is Vice-President of Zero Waste USA and Zero Waste Certifications Committee Chair and a Boardmember of the Zero Waste International Alliance.  Mr. Liss was a founder and past President of the National Recycling Coalition. Mr. Liss is a Certified ZERI System Designer and a SWANA certified Zero Waste Practitioner. He served on Council in his hometown of Loomis, CA and was Mayor in 2010. He has a Master in Public Administration degree from Rutgers University and Bachelor in Civil Engineering (Environmental Engineering major) from Tufts University. Gary Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The process of developing zero waste plans for communities Why sustainability professionals should focus on zero waste Where to focus your zero waste efforts Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Gary's Final Five Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? The key for professionals is identifying what are the things that are most achievable in your given business or community for sustainability, and advocate for those. There's lots of paths to addressing climate change and the key is figuring out which ones people embrace in your community. When I was mayor of Loomis, California, I did a green ribbon taskforce and what I focused on was, "What were the things that will save money for the residents, for the businesses and for the town in moving forward with a green initiatives. Because there's so many things that need to be done and can be done, figure out what people will embrace locally and pursue those as your priorities. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? Zero waste businesses are leading the way to zero waste. And communities that recognize zero waste businesses and highlight them and promote them in local media can really generate a lot of enthusiasm for pursuing zero waste as a community. When people hear that zero waste is happening in their own community by major employers, it really gets their attention. It's a really positive message. There's great examples of zero waste businesses on the GBCI.org website, (true.gbci.org), where the TRUE rating system has been applied to certify those businesses as meeting the goals that were adopted by the Zero Waste International Alliance. And so if you go to true.gbci.org/projects, there's about 20 or 30 different case studies there that can highlight great examples of zero waste businesses and promote those locally. And when people ask about zero waste and you tell them about what those businesses are doing, you'll find people are amazed and excited about that. So with all the negative news these days, this is an area that can be a really positive direction that people can work on and achieve in their own communities. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? I think Zero Waste Solutions by Paul Connett is probably one of the best. It was developed about six or seven years ago, and particularly for zero waste communities, it's a great overview of what needs to be pursued. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? There's a lot of them in terms of where I learn things. EPA does webinars and so does the National Recycling Coalition. There's state recycling conferences like the California Resource Recovery Conference in California. If you go to the NRC website and look up affiliated state recycling organizations, there's links to states all over the country that have the state recycling organizations. The National Resource Recycling conference is excellent for getting information. Trade journals, Resource Recycling and Biocycle are key. There's a lot of listservs out there like Green Yes and NRC members has a Listserv, Zero Waste Communities and Zero Waste Business. Anyone who's interested in getting on listservs could go to my website at garyliss.com and I have a couple of them listed there or email me at gary@garyliss.com. EPA has a wealth of information and Zero Waste USA has a toolkit with different tools that are available at the EPA website. There's one particular section called Managing and Transforming Waste Streams with over a hundred different policy and program examples, actual contracts and ordinances that have been implemented around the country. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and your work? garyliss.com is my website, zerowasteUSA.org, true.Gbci.com, I'm on LinkedIn and you can email me at gary@garyliss.com. Why? Why do you do the things you do? What drives your business, career and entrepreneurial choices? How do you decide to take this job or that, start this business or that, chase one idea or another? The concept of a career has changed, morphed and shifted over the years, but for the most part it’s been all about a progression of jobs in a similar field, linking together common skills and growing them over time, and moving up the hierarchy of your industry. An idea we’ve been floating on the You Can Do That Here podcast a number of times is a different way of looking at what a career truly is. Perhaps more so rather than a progression of jobs, a career is instead the motivation or the reason why we choose to do what we do. Perhaps we choose jobs for security, perhaps we choose it to solve particularly problems, or achieve certain goals. Almost every entrepreneur will tell you they are in it to make the world a better place. What we loved about Andrea Bell of Trend Prive Magazine in Nelson BC’s story was her driving motivation of why she does what she does. It all starts from a place of truly understanding who she is and being confident in her own skin and not afraid to be her true self. On top of that, It’s having the courage to do what you love and make decisions and chase goals based on what is the most fun, exciting and closest to your true passions. It’s a story of serendipitous opportunity, and letting fun, creativity and extravagance guide your career, however you choose to define it. Create your path by following what looks the most fun, putting yourself out there and actively meeting people and making relationships, meet an eccentric, worldly philanthropist, and take the reigns of her new magazine concept, coordinating a global team of talent whom you’ve never met in person all from your home office in The Kootenays? Lawyers. They are the butt of many jokes, often considered expensive, and not typically an aspect of people’s business or lives that they enjoy working with. On the other hand, law touches every aspect of our lives from marriage to death and everything in between, including the businesses we launch and run. Indeed the perception of lawyers being expensive may well be incorrect, and rather a good lawyer will save many hours of heartache and grief as well as money if used wisely. Yes a good lawyer will help set that foundation for your business, put in place the rules that keep you and your partners happy and functioning well, or separating cleanly if that’s the case. So is that lawyer expensive, or is it perhaps the best money you’ve ever spent as an entrepreneur? Leon Pigott of Pigott &Co. in Nelson BC is a strong example of the type of lawyer that can be that wise investment of your early startup cash. As an entrepreneur himself, having been lured in by Nelson’s lifestyle siren song from bigger centers, he decided to launch his own firm with a specific focus on working with up and helping up and coming entrepreneurs lead the Kootenays into the next generation of business success. I caught up with Leon at the Kootenay Coop Studios to talk about his own entrepreneurial journey as well as the two tips that every entrepreneur needs to know about the law and how and when lawyers can be a great investment in your business.

On May 7, 2008, Darrick Hahn and Sinisa Grgic departed Victoria from the 0-Mile mark of the Trans-Canada Highway and embarked on a cross-Canada journey to raise awareness of Deconstructing Dinner. The pair are travelling by recumbent tricycles (or trikes).  On May 15 we aired a segment featuring their departure from Victoria alongside a phone interview while they stopped over in Grand Forks, BC. This second installment of the Cross-Canada Trike tour begins in the home of Deconstructing Dinner - Nelson, BC. Hahn and Grgic were well taken care of in Nelson, receiving complementary meals from local restaurants and support from the local co-operative grocery store. Host Jon Steinman pulled them into the studios of Kootenay Co-op Radio and probed further into why the two were so motivated to use their cross-Canada trip to raise awareness of an independent radio show. Of greatest interest to this episode is the story of Darrick Hahn himself as he embodies many of the issues that are discussed here on the show each week. Hahn grew up on a a conventional dairy farm in the community of Monkton, Ontario; just north of the city of Stratford. Like many young Canadians growing up on farms, Hahn left his rural community as a teenager and migrated into the city. Having most recently lived in Vancouver for the past two years, he came to recognize that the city life was far too removed from the earth and his trip across the country is symbolic of his eventual decision to move back to the farm. His story is an important window into the lives of Canada's young rural populations. How do food issues make their way into our public schools. As Deconstructing Dinner's Jon Steinman recalls, "I remember graduating from high school not knowing the first thing about growing food and having very little idea how the food I consumed impacted the planet on which we live." With schools being the building blocks of our society and culture, how does our government-funded education system incorporate into curriculums the most important issue facing all humans - food. Part IHost Jon Steinman takes a ride with the Nelson-based group Earth Matters as they introduce their Food-to-Table program in local public schools. As a component of the country-wide One-Tonne Challenge, the program involved in-class presentations on how our food choices influence climate change, and even saw students visit local grocery stores where food was discussed in-depth. Guests Colleen Matte and Su Donovaro - Earth Matters - Colleen and Su were the coordinators of the One-Tonne Challenge Food-to-Table program.
