I was a big fan of Guadalcanal Diary, so when Murray Attaway appeared on Frets back in 2022, I could hardly believe I was talking with their lead singer and main songwriter. The band released four major label albums throughout the 1980s and Murray went on to record In Thrall, a solo album that features Jackson Browne, Nicky Hopkins, Jim Keltner, Aimee Mann, Steve Nieve, Sid Page and Benmont Tench among others. Murray has also composed music for independent film scores and his songs have been featured in many films and television shows. This week sees the release of Murray's new solo album, Tense Music Plays, and returning to Frets to tell us all about the new record is, the one and only, Murray Attaway.Photo by Layla AttawayYou can order Tense Music Plays through Bandcamp here or through murrayattaway.comSave on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. In June of 2024, I talked with Peter Holsapple about the reissues of two classic albums by the dB's – “Stands for Decibels” and “Repercussion”. I had the pleasure of talking to Peter again recently, this time about his soon to be released solo album, The Face of 68. The song you're hearing, “Larger than Life” , is the first single from that album. It was great to catch up with Peter to hear about his very busy 2024, the recording of the album, touring, his continued work as a member of The Paranoid Style, and some candid, honest talk reflecting on his lifestyle in the past and his outlook on life and love these days. Stay tuned for a second talk with the one and only Peter Holsapple.Photo by Bill Reeves. My first talk with Peter from June 2024 is also available here.Save on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. Paul Rappaport is an accomplished guitarist who first heard guitar when he was a kid in California, watching a live local TV show featuring country guitar players…a show that was broadcast from a huge L.A. car lot. He learned to play, fell in love with the instrument and by high school was playing in bands. While attending college at UCLA, Paul got a job offer. A very appealing offer from Columbia Records. The position sounded good, but what really sweetened the deal was when he learned he could have all the records he wanted…for free. During his 33 years at Columbia, Paul Rappaport proved to be gifted at promotion and marketing and at forming close relationships with artist and bands, who knew him as Rapp. He gave Elvis Costello the red Rickenbacker used on Armed Forces. Pink Floyd asked Rapp to join them onstage at the London Arena. And he created some of the most memorable and visually stunning event promotions in rock history. All of this is told in Rapp's fascinating new book – Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay, and The Art Of Rock Promotion. You can order Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay and The Art of Rock Promotion from Barnes & Noble here. You can also order the book from Amazon here.Save on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. When Chuck Mead was a young boy, he and his sister moved with their parents to Lawrence, Kansas. He got a drum kit as a gift when he was 12, and soon after started playing in the family's band. It was made up of his mom, his dad, his grandparents and uncles who played country and western, and Chuck would also sing songs by Carl Perkins and Elvis. An uncle taught Chuck how to play guitar and by high school, he was playing in bands with friends. He continued to play while attending The University of Kansas, still having a fondness for rockabilly and country, but was also listening to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Springsteen and even the Ramones. His band, The Homestead Grays, recorded a couple of records and after college, Chuck moved to Nashville. He played in the window of Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and before long, he and Gary Bennett formed BR549. Crowds packed in to see them play Robert's on Lower Broadway. They were an enormous hit, and soon became famous worldwide. A few weeks after seeing him with his current band, The Stalwarts, I had the pleasure of talking with the extremely talented, and very very funny, Chuck Mead.Photo by Joshua Black Wilkins. This week Imogen Bachra and Joann Spadigam ruminate about rates markets on either side of the Channel. In the UK, markets appear to be waking up to fiscal concerns, and have had to take into account recent remarks from Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey. Meanwhile, how might the euro area's falling inflation affect future decisions on rates? Finally, to France, where markets are waiting for next week's budget. It was a wonderful experience talking with someone I've admired for so long. I love her songs, I love her voice. And she's just incredibly cool. In additional to her solo work, there's such a long list of great bands and artists she's performed with.A list that includes – Pat Benatar, The dB's, The Del-Lords, Dave Alvin, The Golden Palominos, Marshall Crenshaw, Van Dyke Parks, Vic Chesnutt, Wilco, Richard Thompson and many more. Syd's debut solo album Surprise featured a lot of her pals from that list and her second album, War and Peace was backed by none other than that fantastic and much-loved band from Springfield, The Skeletons. I hope you'll enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed talking with the one and only…Syd Straw.Photo by Regan Kelly. @reganbrooklynFind wonderful songs and albums by Syd here at Bandcamp.Save on certified Pre-Owned iPhones, Androids, AirPods, Macs, Smartwatches, accessories, and more at Plug Tech. Also, Islamic State in Somalia poses a growing threat, according to US officials. While growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a young Beth Bombara took piano lessons in grade school. By the time she was entering high school, she had become interested in another instrument: her Mom's electric guitar. She formed a punk band, Green Means Go, wrote some songs with her bandmates, and before long was playing for local audiences and gaining a loyal following. After attending college in both Michigan and Illinois, Beth moved to St. Louis, where she lives today. And, that following she had in high school…has now grown into a very large fan base. She stopped by the Frets studio today and I really hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed talking with the very talented singer-songwriter and guitarist, Beth Bombara.Photo by Virginia Harold.More information about Beth Bombara can be found here.Save on certified Pre-Owned iPhones, Androids, AirPods, Macs, Smartwatches, accessories, and more at Plug Tech. Brinsley Schwarz met Nick Lowe at school in the 1960s. They played in various bands with different group names and different members. In 1969, the band took the name of their lead guitarist, Brinsley Schwarz. On their studio albums, all from the 1970s, the band was made up of Brinsley along with Bob Andrews, Nick Lowe and Billy Rankin, with the addition of Ian Gomm on guitar and vocals, starting with their third LP, Silver Pistol. After releasing their final studio album The New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz, Brinsley and Bob would become part of Graham Parker & The Rumour. Brinsley is not only a fine guitar player and vocalist, he also plays saxophone, keyboards and percussion, and…is also a luthier, working on guitars and amplifiers. These days he's still writing and recording wonderful songs. It was a pleasure…and an honor, to talk with a guitar hero of mine, Brinsley Schwarz.Save on certified Pre-Owned iPhones, Androids, AirPods, Macs, Smartwatches, accessories, and more at Plug Tech. In 1968, St. Louis band The Aerovons were getting noticed in clubs around town. Still in high school, their leader and singer, Tom Hartman, was composing their songs. The band was being managed by Tom's mother, Maurine. She was determined to see her son and his bandmates make it big. Tom was 16 years old when he, his band and his manager mom made their first pilgrimage to England with demos in search of a record deal. They signed with Parlophone, but were asked to head back to St. Louis and write more material. A year later, the boys entered EMI Studio Two to record their debut album unaware that next door, in Studio One, their heroes The Beatles were recording their classic album, Abbey Road. Parlophone released some singles by The Aerovons, but problems among band members resulted in them falling apart. For several decades, their album Resurrection stayed in a vault before RPM in England released it on CD. Now, this legendary album has been remastered and reissued on vinyl. Stay tuned to hear the story of The Aerovons, as told by its founder and leader, Tom Hartman.Photo by Karen Hartman. You can order the vinyl reissue of Resurrection by The Aerovons from Euclid Records.Find or Sell Guitars and Gear at ReverbFind great deals on guitars, amps, audio and recording gear. This is episode 10 and the Russians are about to launch their second attempt at invading Finland and this time, they're going to significantly alter their strategy and their tactics. The Stavka back in Moscow had inserted new commanders, demoted failures, and were now determined to recover lost initiative — the Red Army had lost numerous battles and lost face in the full view of the Germans. This winter War lasted 105 days from November 1939 until March 1940, but its ramifications for world history cannot be overstressed. Hitler saw how the handful of Finns bludgeoned one of the world's superpowers, crushed them in the early round of attacks, repulsed them repeatedly and in many ways, Finland's treatment of the Russians reinforced the German Fascists mistaken belief that if they kicked in the USSR front door, the entire edifice of communism would collapse. Thus the Reich's own invasion of Russia which took place in 1941, operation Barbarossa. While the Russian invasion of the far north of Finland had literally frozen to a halt, in the south around Lake Ladoga and further south, in the Karelian Isthmus, the Red Army had retrained and by early February 1940, was ready for the big push. Lieutenant General Hugo Osterman directed the Finnish Army of the Isthmus. A quick revisit here - his army was split into two groups, in the West around Viipuri was Second Army Corps under lieutenant general Harald Ohquist, while the eastern half was held by Three Army Corps under Major General Heinrichs. The Taipale sector was inside Heinrichs zone of command, it had been fought over ferociously since the start of the Winter War. Factoring into Timoshenko's thinking was somethign bloodthirsty. That the Finns could not afford to lose as many men as the Russians, he was going to try to bleed them white to quote a First world War logic — the battle of Verdun as case in point. It was late in January 1940 when the Finns began to have an inkling of what was in store for them. They had a relatively weak Air force in terms of pure power, and the Russian Air Force bombed and strafed their positions almost at will. The Finnish Air Force tried to send recon flights over the Russian build up, but this was almost suicidal the anti-aircraft and other defences were so thick on the ground. On the morning of February 1st a single Finn air reconnaissance aircraft managed to thread its way through these awaiting guns and zig zagged past Russian planes to make a hasty photo run over the forward Russian Positions in front Summa, which is now part of Russia and called Soldatskoye - roughly translated as Soldiers place. Summajarvi, the lake, is nearby and added a layer of complexity to the Russian advance — and shoehorned coming attacks into a specific area to the north of the lake. The village of Summa was a gateway to the city of Viipuri. Meanwhile, Finlands political leadership was desperately trying to start peace talks behind the scenes. Foreign Minister Vaino Tanner had virtually setup camp in Stockholm where he held a series of meetings with Russia's Swedish ambassador Alexandra Kollontai. An unusual figure in this war, Alexandra as a woman was trying chiefly to stop Sweden from formally entering the war on Finlands' behalf. But she was able to pass on messages to Stalin from Tanner. Tyler Armstrong grew up in Springfield, Illinois and as a young kid, started banging on pots and pans, developing a love for percussion. Through his parents, he was exposed to both Contemporary Christian music and also secular music. Through his older sister, he also heard a great mix of pop and punk. Tyler appreciated good music, no matter what the genre. His dad was into classic rock, which opened another musical window. He got a guitar, and over time, became an incredibly great guitarist. At 18, he moved to Nashville for a while and was knocked out by what he heard from the musicians there. He's played in bands that have opened for Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet and .38 Special just to name a few. Tyler does session work, produces other artists his space Harbor Studios, and is currently playing and recording with FEEL on lead guitar. On my recent visit to Harbor, I got to hear Tyler Armstrong's story in his own words and see at least some of his many guitars, amps and gear.FEEL plays Off Broadway in St. Louis on September 9. In the early 1980s, Rick Miller formed the first lineup of Southern Culture on the Skids. Rick had grown up dividing time between his father's home in North Carolina and his mother's home in California. Mary Huff, from Roanoke, Virginia was a cello major who also played bass guitar. Upon hearing that Rick's band was looking for a replacement bass player, Mary joined and also recruited her long time friend Dave Hartman on drums. The trio of Rick, Mary and Dave would go on to become a much-loved, very fun and extremely talented band who have recorded and toured for several decades now. I've seen them play shows over the years, most recently at The Duck Room in St. Louis. And I had the pleasure of talking with Mary and Rick who called in from their rehearsal space and studio, The Kudzu Ranch.Photo by Ron Keith.Save on certified Pre-Owned iPhones, Androids, AirPods, Macs, Smartwatches, accessories, and more at Plug Tech. Obeid Khan, founder of Khan Audio, has been building high quality recording audio devices since 1991. He's the man behind St. Louis Music's Ampeg revival and Vintage Club series, Reason Amplifiers and the highly successful Magnatone revival. Throughout the years of his career as a guitar amplifier designer, Obeid has always had an appreciation for the recording medium and its tools. His love for music and the finest audio reproduction was apparent with the launch of Khan Audio. In Obeid's words “I always try to connect with the player sonically with my designs”. His early experiences, repairing his own amplifiers when he was in his teenage years, then playing guitar with metal bands and also a stint with Sinister Dane, make for a very interesting story. If you've either listened to, or experienced live performances by Midwest area bands including Stillwater, Waterloo, Magnolia Summer, Rough Shop and Cave States, you've heard music by Chris Grabau. Chris has composed songs and provided guitar work and vocals for all of those groups and his band Cave States is now in its tenth year of recording and performing. There's also a long list of bands that he's shared the stage with and also lent his musical talents to in the studio. He's appeared with bands at several well known Midwest music festivals and also in Austin at South by Southwest. Chris has performed over the years with the likes of Chuck Prophet, Alejandro Escovedo, Robyn Hitchcock, Buddy Guy, Matthew Sweet, Jeff Tweedy…and even St. Louis legend Chuck Berry. That's just a fraction of the artists and bands that have recognized the talents of the prolific Chris Grabau. Chris took time out of a very busy schedule to talk with me in the Frets studio.
