This was a big one! This summer we had the privilege and honor of speaking with DC Comics legend, Paul Kupperberg. Paul was kind enough to speak to us about Episode 23 - Metropolis Mishpacha, where we covered Supergirl and her landlady Ida Berkowitz! Paul of course was the author of these stories. We talk about religion in comics, Jewish representation, the Holocaust, and Colossal Boy's colossal bris! Please check out Paul's website and shop for all things KUP! https://www.paulkupperberg.net/You can follow us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/JewishComicsPodAnd on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/jewishcomicspod

Back in July 2020, Brandon and Henry were welcomed by the Association of Jewish Libraries to present at their Digital conference. On Zoom Brandon and Henry introduced the world to Colossal Boy, Jewish hero from the 31st Century!
Questions Covered: 03:15 – Is it possible that children are so incredibly happy because of reincarnation? Their spirit remembers the recent experience of being old, and now they’re internally happy to be young again? 13:50 – Let us stipulate: One of Paul’s lost letters to the Corinthians is discovered, An additional copy is found with complete textual agreement, A third fragment is located and dated to the mid second century, Scholarly consensus develops that this letter is a work of the Apostle Paul; in essence there is no doubt that the letter is a work of “The Paul”, The letter contains no dogmatic contradictions, The letter offers some additional support for what the Catholic Church terms “Purgatory” and that this support can easily be harmonized with the Eastern concept of “Fore-taste”, Bottom line, it is from Paul and it offers additional on point information, Given these stipulations, would you kindly opine on the following: Would the Church likely call a Council to consider adding the letter to the Bible? If so, do you think it would be added to the cannon? To your mind, what would the various Orthodox communities do with the book? Similarly, what are your thoughts as to what this development might mean to the Protestant world? 20:28 – Would a self-aware AI (like Terminator’s SkyNet) have rational soul? If so, would God create the soul the moment it became self-aware? And would that mean once an AI is “on,” turning it off would equate killing it? 25:03 – I seem to recall that Colossal Boy was Jewish. Were any members of the Legion of Super Heroes Catholic? 31:55 – Is Baby Yoda required to fast, or to abstain from meat on Fridays/Good Friday (according to the discipline of his diocese/rite), if he’s 50 years old? 36:12 – If someone were to travel close to the speed of light from Saturday evening to Monday morning, as experienced on earth, such that Monday felt like Sunday, would they be obliged to fulfill their Sunday obligation in what was Monday for us but still felt like Sunday to them? 42:20 – Is the Prime Directive ethically defensible? 49:50 – When you fast regularly for health reasons, how do you deal with the religious obligation of fasting? If you were going to fast anyway and you were fasting from your own desire, how do you sincerely redirect that intention to God? 51:34 – What would be the effects of organ transplants at the resurrection of the dead? 52:07 – What would be your opinion on how a faithful Catholic should deal with vampires? Is it morally acceptable to destroy them? 53:34 – How much incense is too much? …

October 1963 w: Jerry Siegel a: Curt Swan "Jimmy is taking part in a televised showcase of has many adventures, focusing particularly on the formula that turns him into Elastic Lad, and his various other transformations over the years. His special is suddenly interrupted by an alien creature calling itself the Collector who kidnaps Jimmy with it's scientific devices. Jimmy finds himself transported to an alien world where the Collector hopes to make a collection of all the various incarnations of Jimmy Olsen. Rooting Jimmy to the group (by literally turning his feet into tree roots) the Collector keeps Superman at bay as well and apparently brings forth the giant monster Jimmy, the wolfman Jimmy, porcupine Jimmy and fat Jimmy before the real Jimmy. These alternate versions of him terrorize him before they themselves are rooted into the ground. Before the Collector can do anything else Jimmy suddenly pulls the microphone that's been attached to him since the TV interview, and throws it at the Collector scaring the creature, thus proving to Jimmy that it's a ruse. Jimmy had deduced that the "Collector" is really Mon-El in disguise (due to his reaction to the microphone which was made with some lead parts which used to be a weakness for Mon-El) and that the other "Jimmy's" are really other members of the Legion of Super-Heroes (who are revealed to be Colossal Boy, Chameleon Boy and his new pet Proty II, Cosmic Boy, and Bouncing Boy.) Jimmy learns that this was all planned by the Legion and Superman as an initiation for Jimmy, who is taken to the 30th Century where he is awarded an honorary membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes." - via DC Wikia Adventure Comics #315 The Legionnaires' Super-Contest!
