Hey Girls and Boys, Lads and Lasses, the biggest superhero team on any Earth, The Legion of Super-Heroes, tangles with the villainous Time Trapper as he turns their former ally Superboy against them. It's an ambitious story in the post-Crisis world that serves as a template for DC storytelling to this day. We discuss this all with Legion super-fan and "DC Book of Lists" author Randall Lotowycz!Ep. 94 What If the Time Trapper created a pocket universe to turn Superboy against the Legion of Super-Heroes?With Special Guest author and editor Randall LotowyczEarth of an unknown designation as seen in the Superman & Legion of Super-Heroes crossoverThe Legion of Super-Heroes can seem intimidating with their 20+ members from the traditional members like Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and Mon-El to the wacky powered beings like Matter Eating Lad, Shrinking Violet, and Bouncing Boy, which is why we break down this team from the 60s through their major turning point post crisis in the 1980s. We travel through a multi issue arc constructed by major architects Paul Levitz and John Byrne that sees the Legion and Superman battle their old friend Superboy in a pocket universe, all controlled by the mysterious cloaked Time Trapper. We also discuss Time Trapper co-creator and Weird Tales writer Edmund Hamilton and how we are still seeing the reverberations of this story in DC's current multiverse and alternate Earth storytelling on film and TV - including the upcoming Flash film from 2023 and more! Finally, we speculate what's next for the Time Trapper and whether Marvel's Kang stole his onscreen...time. We are joined by special returning guest, author and editor Randall Lotowycz.Follow Randall on his website or on Twitter or Instagram. Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
So for the 100th episode of the Character Corner, Kriss & Dpalm are finally back on the DC side and we decided we didn't want to make it easy on ourselves and so we're tackling the Legion of Super-Heroes. The the history of the Legion of Super-Heroes is one that rivals Wonder Woman, Donna Troy and Hawkman as having some oof the most convoluted and rebooted/retconned history on the DC side. There are several reasons for why the history of the Legion is so hard to pin down. Part of that is like with a lot of these characters, it was never the plan for them to be around as long as they were. That coupled with a few other things make the Legion really hard to follow a history on: They're from the future. The 30th century (and 31st century) and time travel almost always makes things messy Their history is centered around Superboy So the first isn't too big of a deal. there's a lot of characters in DC history that play around with time. But when it comes to tying the characters to to Superboy…the follow up question has to be: Which One? Now we've covered Superboy's history on another episode but there's going to be some overlap here. Particularly in the early years of the Legion. Remember, there is a version of Superboy, particular the one we're talking about with the Legion that is a version of Clark Kent that later grows up to become Superman. Some other notable Superboy versions: Superboy Prime - From earth prime. Earth destroyed during Crisis. Becomes a villain The Metropolis Kid/Connor Kent (the clone) But for the Legion, we're talking Earth-1 Superboy (Later Pocket Universe Superboy which we will get into in episode 2). For this episode we keep it nice and simple and cover all the way up to the Great Darkness Saga which is still pre-crisis and before things get all weird. We focus mostly on how the concepts and early stories for the Legion of Super-Heroes really laid the groundwork for a lot of modern stories both in and out of comics. In episode 2 we'll really dive down into some of the specific characters as well as try to unwrap the craziness that happens post-crisis. Issues: Adventure Comics #247 - First Appearance First Appearance of Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad/Boy Adventure Comics #267 - Second Appearance Adventure Comics #304 - “Death” of Lightning Lad Adventure Comics #329 - Brainiac 5 Introduces the Legion's Flight Ring Adventure Comics #346 - Jim Shooter's first story. Creates Ferro Lad, Karate Kid, Princess Projectra, Adventure Comics #352 - First Appearance of the Fatal Five Adventure Comics 353 - First real death of a Legionnaire Earthwar Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #241 - 245 Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas and Paul Levitz Run Legion of Super-Heroes #259 - 286 The Great Darkness Saga Legion of Super-Heroes vol 2, #287, #290 - 294, Annual #1 & 3 Like what you hear? The Vinyl LP Record - - - - The history - - - A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), often simply called a record, was an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. Because the records were made of polyvinyl chloride they took on the name “VINYL”. In the mid-2000s, gradually, records made of any material began to be called vinyl records, or simply vinyl. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. - - - The details - - - The LP record (from "long playing" or "long play") is a phonograph record format characterized by a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm, having a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter, and uses the "microgroove" groove specification. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. The new product was a 12- or 10-inch (30 or 25 cm) fine-grooved disc made of PVC ("vinyl") and played with a smaller-tipped "microgroove" stylus at a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for about 22 minutes. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m; 0.28 mi) of groove on each side. The average tangential needle speed relative to the disc surface is approximately 1 mile per hour (1.6 km/h; 0.45 m/s). It travels fastest on the outside edge. - - - It is one, long, groove, filled with music. But, in reality, it is “Just A Groove”, an album oriented groove. However, everything turns out to be uninteresting and dull compared to her other suitors. When Jimmy attempts to show her the exploits of the Legion of Super-Heroes with the aid of the time monitor they gave him, their date is interrupted by the arrival of Ultra-Boy and Sun-Boy who have come to ask for Jimmy's help on a mission in the 30th Century. Jimmy agrees to go and tells Lucy to stay and watch him in action on the time monitor, hoping this is the ticket he needs to get her to like him. In the future, Jimmy is left with Saturn Girl, Triplicate Girl, and Light Lass who tell him that he has to be active with the Legion at least twice a year, and so they give him a replica of his Elastic Lad costume and serum so that he can assist them in transporting a priceless Venusian idol to the Astro Museum. Along the way, Jimmy not only has to deal with disasters, wild animals, and criminals, but also the romantic advances of the three female Legion members. After their mission is over, the three girls fight over Jimmy's affections until he is picked up by Ultra-Boy and Sun-Boy who return Jimmy to his own time. With Jimmy gone the girls drop their charade, having staged the whole thing, knowing that Lucy Lane would be watching on the time monitor, in hopes that their advances on Jimmy would make her jealous enough to treat him better. When Jimmy returns to his own time, he finds that Lucy had fallen asleep, and demands a taxi home after listening to Jimmy's "wild story". Watching this through their own time monitor in the 30th Century, the Legion girls are disappointed with the outcome of their little charade. - via DC Wikia Adventure Comics #321 The Code of the Legion! June 1964 w: Edmond Hamilton a: John Forte When the Legion intruder alarm goes off, it turns out to be Bouncing Boy, who has just lost his powers due to an accidental exposure to a ray being developed by Element Lad. Instead of expelling him, the Legion decides to keep Bouncing Boy on as a reserve member of the Legion. Later the Legion is visited by Commissioner Wilson who has heard of a secret weapon the Legion has developed called the Concentrator. It's a device so devastating, the Legion refuses to tell anyone it's secret. The Commissioner decides to test the Legion's ability to keep this secret by putting each Legion member through a test designed to put them up against the most lethal attack possible, in an attempt to coerce the secret out of them. All the Legion members pass except for Lightning Lad who tells the Commissioner the secret. As punishment, Lightning Lad is to be imprisoned. However, Lightning Lad confides in his fellow Legionnaires that the information he told the Commissioner was false, and the if the Commissioner was an impostor he would soon be flushed out. Sure enough, the "Commissioner" turns out to be the Time Trapper, and when he realizes the deception he returns behind the Iron Curtain of Time once more. After his defeat, the Legion rescue the real Commander and vow to stop the Time Trapper once and for all. Later, the Legion meets up with their now powerless member Bouncing Boy who introduces them to his new girlfriend, who turns out to be just as fat as he used to be. - via DC Wikia

Learning that it's true, the Legion puts it to a vote and Ultra-Boy is expelled from the Legion. Enraged that he's been expelled, Ultra-Boy tells the Legion that he will now work against them, and flees the planet to escape from them. The Legion tries to take in Ultra-Boy for his crimes, but each time they track him down, Ultra-Boy is able to evade capture. While fleeing the Legion, Ultra-Boy aids a number of humans who have had their minds placed into alien creatures before resuming his escape from the Legion. When hiding out on the phantom planet, Phantom Girl manages to track him down and warn him of the Legion's impending arrival, and they are captured by the aliens responsible for the rash of crimes that the Legion was investigating before going after Ultra-Boy. The aliens, having heard of Ultra-Boy's expulsion from the Legion's ranks offer him a chance to join them, and Ultra-Boy aids them in incapacitating the Legion. However, Ultra-Boy suddenly turns on his alien benefactors and captures them and frees the Legion. Ultra-Boy and Cosmic Boy then reveal that the entire episode was a ruse, where they planted evidence making it appear as though Ultra-Boy was a hunted criminal to lure out the real criminals. With the culprits caught, the Legion reinstate Ultra-Boy as one of their members. - via DC Wikia Adventure Comics #317 The Menace of Dream Girl! February 1964 w: Edmond Hamilton a: John Forte While the Legion of Super-Heroes attempts to figure out what the Time Trapper is up too, they find opposition in the way of a barrier protecting the future era in which he resides, keeping the Legion from monitoring his activities. In the meantime, the Legion induct a new member, Dream Girl, who is voted in because all of the male members of the Legion become instantly attracted to her and vote her into the Legion. Things start to get suspicious, as Dream Girl ends up entrapping various Legion members on disciplinary actions, leading to their temporary suspension from the Legion. After taking Ultra-Boy, Bouncing Boy, Shrinking Violet, Lightning Lad, and Lightning Lass to an alien world which causes them to de-age into infants (except for Dream Girl who took a preventative antidote) most of the Legion is on suspension. However, Dream Girl later reveals to Star Boy, that her power is to see the future through dreams, and the reason she has manipulated events is because she forsaw the Legion being killed in a rocket explosion, and that she did everything she could to prevent the Legion members from dieing. Star Boy then reveals to Dream Girl that what she saw was really a planned rocket flight with robot doubles of the Legion. Afterwards, all is explained and Dream Girl decides to leave the Legion to hone her powers, but not before seeing the other Legion members -- restored to their natural ages -- and learning that the episode gave Lightning Lass new powers over density, Dream Girl rechristens her Light Lass. - via DC Wikia LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: THE SILVER AGE OMNIBUS Originally introduced in 1958, the Legion of Super-Heroes is a team of super-powered teenagers from the disparate worlds of the 30th century's United Planets. His special is suddenly interrupted by an alien creature calling itself the Collector who kidnaps Jimmy with it's scientific devices. Jimmy finds himself transported to an alien world where the Collector hopes to make a collection of all the various incarnations of Jimmy Olsen. Rooting Jimmy to the group (by literally turning his feet into tree roots) the Collector keeps Superman at bay as well and apparently brings forth the giant monster Jimmy, the wolfman Jimmy, porcupine Jimmy and fat Jimmy before the real Jimmy. These alternate versions of him terrorize him before they themselves are rooted into the ground. Before the Collector can do anything else Jimmy suddenly pulls the microphone that's been attached to him since the TV interview, and throws it at the Collector scaring the creature, thus proving to Jimmy that it's a ruse. Jimmy had deduced that the "Collector" is really Mon-El in disguise (due to his reaction to the microphone which was made with some lead parts which used to be a weakness for Mon-El) and that the other "Jimmy's" are really other members of the Legion of Super-Heroes (who are revealed to be Colossal Boy, Chameleon Boy and his new pet Proty II, Cosmic Boy, and Bouncing Boy.) He goes on to explain he figured it out when he touched a firefly from the planet Lurna, and so went there find a creature with stronger flame powers. He also explains that the reason why his powers weren't restored by Superboy and Ultra Boy is because they are really robots. This was figured out while Sun-Boy watched the Legion in action and the two heroes were drawn towards Cosmic Boy whenever he used his magnetic powers. When revealed as robots, the Legion checks out their inner workings and learn that they were sent to the future by Ultra Boy and Superboy, who were busy in the 20th Century celebrating the birthday of Pete Ross. The robots were sent to the future to take their place, and they caught caught in a storm during their travel through the time barrier which caused them to forget they were really robots. With all the loose ends tied up, Sun-Boy is welcomed back into the ranks of the Legion of Super-Heroes. - via DC Wikia

Supergirl rushes off to prevent the entrance from being seen. Returning home once more she gets a signal from the Legion of Super-Heroes to visit them in the 30th Century. At first she wonders why the Legion called her because they all appear to be busy doing other things, however she strangely finds them at the Legion's headquarters. Returning to Earth, the Legion members find that their super-powers no longer work, and in order to avoid a crime spree, Supergirl with the help of Whizzy (the future descendant of her super-cat Streaky) help make it appear as though the Legion still has their super-powers by helping them out behind the scenes. However, this is all a trick, and the "Legion" members are really members of the Chameleon men, alien shape changers who are posing as the Legion. With Supergirl's guard down, they use a Phantom Zone projector to shunt both Supergirl and Whizzy into the Phantom Zone. Using Whizzy's telepathic abilities, they gain the aid of the owner of an android factory they had saved earlier to send in an android resembling the Chameleon Men to enter the Legion base and free Supergirl and Whizzy. Supergirl then quickly defeats the Chameleon Men, trapping them in a transparent dome, and freeing the other Legion members. After she says goodbye to the Legion and Whizzy and returns to her own time and relates to the story to Streaky. - via DC Wikia

Investigating it as Superboy, the Boy of Steel is shocked to find an occupant inside that has a star chart and a medallion around his neck from Jor-El, his own father, about his apparent son. Believing that this person is a previously unknown and long lost brother, Superboy is disappointed to find that the occupant has amnesia. Taking him in with the Kents, they decide to name him Mon-El, based partially on the day of the week he landed on Earth (Monday) and on Kryptonian names. Pa Kent also sets Mon-El up with a civilian guise of Bob Cobb so that Mon-El can assume a civilian life in Smallville, as a brush salesman. However, Superboy beings to get suspicious of Mon-El's true nature, and begins to doubt his origins when he realizes the buckle on Mon-El's belt is not made of any Kryptonian metal, and Krypto doesn't recognize Mon-El. As a final test, Superboy tries to expose Mon-El to Kryptonite as the boy sleeps and is shocked that it has no effect. The next day, after Mon-El tries to show up Clark for Lana Lang's affections, Superboy decides to trick Mon-El into "revealing" himself by orchestrating a Kryptonite meteor hoax while they're playing. To do so, Superboy paints lead meteors to resemble Kryptonite and throws them into space so that they land on Earth at the right time. Superboy is shocked to find that Mon-El is effected by the lead meteors just as Superboy would have been effected by real Kryptonite. This causes Mon-El's memories to return, and he reveals that his real name is Lar Grand, who was from the planet Daxam, and landed on Krypton just before it's destruction and befriended Jor-El before departing the planet, and that the crash really did cause him to have amnesia. As lead being the Daxarian's weakness, Mon-El is about to die, however Superboy comes up with a solution to save Mon-El's life, by sending him to the Phantom Zone until he can find a cure for Mon-El's lead poisoning. - via DC Wikia
