#madeonzencastr. We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part to cast interviews, articles from Collider, and the great work of the Canceled Movie Report podcast), go over a brief history of the Justice League, and explore the biggest reasons for this film's collapse: the Australian government and the 2007-2008 Writers' Guild of America strike. We marvel at the gambit of casting such young actors for such iconic adult roles, give a brief lesson on rabies symptoms, hypothesize future advancements in villainous tracking technology, have a fun discussion on currency conversion rates and tax credits, subject you to some truly awful Batman voices, remind you that Jack is still trying to track down a VHS copy of Nukie to torture Joe with, bring awareness to the pitfalls of bad acronyms/initialisms, Jack plugs his latest creative project, and we ask a question we've been wondering for some time: do the members of the Justice League all share a tailor? Suit up, settle into the Brother Eye console, and enjoy the show. Spoilers for Flashpoint comics and Invincible. What was it like being an intern at MAD Magazine? Do you have to choose between Marvel and DC? (I hope not!) What comic was Harrison surprised to see become a TV show? What was Superman like in Dark Knight Returns? Why does DC love a crisis? What was the controversy with artist Greg Land? Is it OK for comic artists to trace photographs? What if he's tracing porn? Is Tony Stark a dick? What's the difference between Plastic Man and Elongated Man? What did the DC movies get wrong about Superman? Should there be magicians in a superhero universe? Can you name a famous female magician? Is it cheating if a magician has superpowers? Should superheroes be allowed to have relationships? Wouldn't people die while they're going to dinner? Did the MCU movies make it easier for comedians to talk about superhero stuff in their acts? Have we reached "peak superhero" in terms of media? Will people get tired of superhero content? Does Paul Rudd have superpowers? Everyone Dies In Sunderland: A podcast about growing up terrified in the eighties and nineties
In 1994 four teenage boys in Sunderland – all students from the same school – died one after another, with their bodies found for the most part in burning sheds or derelict buildings with ligatures around their neck. The police insisted nothing sinister was going on. A lot of true crime shows will at some point say “this sounds like something out of a horror movie” – but that is a horror movie, right? Tonight we look at the case of Steven Grieveson – aka (but not by us) as The Sunderland Strangler - the only North East serial killer of the modern era. Gareth expresses his love for Bush, Curry and Beer. John solves the thorny problem of how footballers can continue with their career after prison sentences. Claire believes that the musical career of Ant and Dec is more significant than the Rwandan genocide. Listeners hear the words “beaver anuses” a lot.Digressions in this episode include: Ensemble charity singles! The death of Stephen Milligan MP! The death of Andreas Escobar and Alan Hansen's startlingly inappropriate response! Gary Rhodes! Alice Beer! Swearing on Farscape! Rednex! Jewish Eggs! Spiderland by Slint (DON'T LISTEN TO IT)! The Elongated Man! Hans Zimmer! Everyone Dies in Sunderland explores some of the darkest moments of North East history, and includes jokes. These jokes will never be at the expense of victims or their families and will always be at the expense of people who deserve to be mocked, robbed of their power and shown up for the idiots they really are. If you're easily offended or personally connected to the events we're discussing though, you probably shouldn't listen. During this episode John suggests that we allow serial killer nicknames if they make the killers sound ridiculous. So Peter Sutcliffe is now “the dangly willy killer” in tribute to his iconic homemade underpants. Any other suggestions? Drop us a line! You can reach us on email everyonediesinsunderland@gmail.com, on Twitter at @everyonediespod, on Facebook and Instagram. Our theme music is the song “Steady Away” by Pete Dilley and can be found on his album Half-truths and Hearsay which you can/should buy/stream here: https://petedilley.bandcamp.com/album/half-truths-and-hearsay There are shout-outs in this episode to our podcast pals @uktruecrime @oklahomicide @yeoldecrimepodcast @wdstorytime. Does she remember being Harbinger? WHERE IS WALLY????????????????? Where is Cisco and the others? Article cited at bottom states, “Maybe one day we will tell that story,” Guggenheim hedges, “but again, all of those actors need to be paid, and they need to be paid a crossover rate that is above and beyond their episodic rate. That forces us to make hard financial choices that unfortunately occasionally drive the creative choices.” • Roses o SP - Never been done before over this many shows and this many episodes o Chris Combining earths opens some cool opportunities. Justice League formation is awesome. BEEBO! Everyone loves Beebo Sara gets heavily featured and proven that as Captain she's already a leader of people. Makes sense she would lead the group. Also continuous with a trend in DC where normal humans play a fundamental role in a team Routh as Supes one more time. I literally cheered when i saw him in suit on screen again. o Michelle OMG they combined all the current CW DC shows (Stargirl on her own Earth) Sara in charge; given great moments: leading fight w/Beebo, heart-to-heart w/Barry; coordinating fight w/Anti-Monitor and shadow demons; speech to Anti-Monitor - For Oliver! Status Unknown Artemis Talia Nyssa ARROW NEWS: Arrow villain Prometheus to appear in four-way crossover (Date: 29 Sept 2017) EW has confirmed that the Arrow villain will appear in the four-way crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow, but he's the Prometheus from Earth-X, otherwise known as Prometheus-X. We'll also see Dark Arrow, Dark Flash, and Overgirl. Alas, there are no plans for Josh Segarra to return as Prometheus, which raises the question: Who is under that mask? http://ew.com/tv/2017/09/29/arrow-prometheus-crossover/ ArrowverseCrossover Set Photo Appears to Show A Double Wedding (Date: 11 Oct 2017) We knew Barry Allen and Iris West would tie the knot in this year's huge Arrowversecrossover, but a set photo suggests pair of Arrow character may get hitched at the same time. The set photo has Grant Gustin and Candice Patton dressed to the nines on their big day, but the surprisingly part is that Stephen Amell and Emily Bett Rickards are right alongside them, with Amell's Oliver Queen apparently placing a ring on the finger of Felicity's finger. http://www.cbr.com/arrowverse-crossover-photo-oliver-felicity-married/ Arrow Introduces DC Comics' Onyx in Season 6 (Date: 06 month year) The third episode of Arrow‘s sixth season is set to bring in another character from DC Comics: Onyx. A member of the League of Assassins, Onyx decides to give up taking lives to become a vigilante — she's typically an ally of Batman in the comics. The official synopsis of the episode reveals that Onyx will be played by Chastity Dotson (Pitch, Veronica Mars). Her character will lead a rogue black-ops team to break into Kord Industries. It's likely that she'll run into Oliver Queen and Team Arrow during her mission to retrieving a deadly item. http://www.cbr.com/arrow-season-6-onyx/ Arrow's Season 6 Sizzle Reel Teases Deathstroke'sEye Injury (Date: 10 Oct 2017) A new sizzle reel for the sixth season of the CW's Arrow teases a major moment for the Wilson family. The video introduces Arrow fans to Liam Hall, who will play Joe Wilson, the son of Slade Wilson, otherwise known as the international assassin Deathstroke. It looks like Joe will be on the hunt for revenge, specifically against the man who took his father's eye – Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow himself. http://www.cbr.com/arrow-season-6-sizzle-reel-deathstroke-eye/ Arrow's EP On Prometheus' Victim, Arsenal's Return & Vigilante's True Identity (Date: 12 Oct 2017) CBR spoke with showrunner Wendy Mericle about what she and the rest of her crew have in store for Team Arrow in Season 6. While she wouldn't offer so much as a clue regarding which character met their final fate, Mericle was more than happy to discuss the possibility of seeing Black Siren achieve some level of redemption this season, and hoe excited she is for Roy Harper to return n to Star City. And, she promises, fans can expect a definite answer to a question that's been haunting Oliver and company when the show reveals Vigilante's secret identity once and for all. http://www.cbr.com/arrow-interview-wendy-mericle-vigilante-arsenal-deathstroke/ GENERAL DC TV NEWS Victor Garber to Leave DC's Legends of Tomorrow (Date: 11 Oct 2017) Garber – who plays Martin Stein, one half of Firestorm – will be exiting DC's Legends of Tomorrow during the current season. His departure has been rumored for some months now, and seemed imminent once it was revealed in September that he'd be returning to Broadway in Hello, Dolly! The report states that Garber's exit has been planned meticulously to give Stein a fitting send-off. It's also said he'll remain a series regular throughout the third season, which premiered last night, though he's not likely to return for episodes beyond those he's already filmed. This means Jaxwill need to find another half to remain as the hero Firestorm. http://www.cbr.com/victor-garber-leaves-dcs-legends-of-tomorrow/ Matt Ryan to Reprise 'Constantine' Role for 2-Part 'Legends of Tomorrow' Arc (Date: 09 Oct 2017) Matt Ryan will reprise his role of demon hunter John Constantine for a two-episode arc on Legends of Tomorrow this season. He will appear in episodes nine and 10 of Legends of Tomorrow season three, which will take place chronologically after his appearance on Arrow and involve a confrontation with the Big Bad. According to executive producer Phil Klemmer, "We knew that an alienated, chain-smoking, bisexual, world-weary demonologist would feel right at home among our Legends." http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/matt-ryan-constantine-legends-tomorrow-2-part-arc-1047123 Constantine Lights Up With First Look At Animated Series(Date: 08 Oct 2017) John Constantine smokes a cigarette or two, and uses some mild profanity, in the action-filled first look at his upcoming animated series from CW Seed. Debuted at New York Comic Con, the preview shows Matt Ryan, star of NBC's live-action Constantine, return to his role as DC Comics' fan-favorite magician and con man. Constantine certainly appears to be in classic form, as in the sneak peek he's invited several demons to an unconsecrated church, under false pretenses, naturally, where they're to be feasted upon by something else. http://www.cbr.com/constantine-animated-series-preview/ Legends of Tomorrow: The Dominators Return – With A Twist (Date: 13 Oct 2017) This Halloween, The CW's ragtag band of time-traveling outcasts will encounter a familiar extraterrestrial race when The Dominators return. According to the synopsis for episode four, aptly titled “Phone Home,” the Legends are still dealing with the ramifications of damaging the timeline last season. Now, with Ray's fate hanging in the balance, the team is forced to travel back in time where they discover that a young Dr. Palmer has an even younger Dominator in his possession, which naturally piques the interest of not only the U.S. Government, but the baby alien's protective mother. http://www.cbr.com/legends-of-tomorrow-dominators-return-atom/ Legends of Tomorrow Sizzle Reel Unleashes Grodd(and Vampires) (Date: 09 Oct 2017) A new sizzle reel for the upcoming third season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow has been released. The video kicks off right where the second season of Legends left off, with the team having returned to the present day only to find that the world has been overrun with dinosaurs. From there, the reel gets to teasing all the big moments set to debut in season three. The sizzle reel also teases some upcoming episode plots, like a trip to the circus and… Vietnam, where Gorilla Groddmakes an appearance. Then there's the vampires, which look to play a rather large role in the show's third season. The video's end teases the return of Damian Darhk (Neal McDonough). http://www.cbr.com/dc-legends-of-tomorrow-sizzle-reel/ The Flash: Barry & Iris Undergo Therapy in Upbeat Season 4 Trailer (Date: 11 Oct 2017) The footage shows that working together on Team Flash will require Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Iris West (Candice Patton) to attend couples therapy, though the scene is definitely more humorous than one might first expect. The trailer also shows Danny Trejo as Breacherand Neil Sandilands as The Thinker/Clifford DeVoe. http://www.cbr.com/the-flash-barry-iris-couples-counceling/ The Flash Showrunner Teases Barry Allen's Season 4 Rebirth (Date: 10 Oct 2017) Showrunner Todd Helbing spoke with CBR about what, exactly, Barry's rebirth will entail. We also dug into Caitlin Snow's continuing identity crisis, the series' take on classic DC comics hero the Elongated Man, and the unique threat the Thinker brings to Central City. http://www.cbr.com/the-flash-showrunner-season-4-rebirth-barry-allen/ The Flash boss teases lighter season 4 (Date: 03 Oct 2017) EW's interview with executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. Discusses Barry and Iris's relationship, Barry's rebirth, The Thinker's motivations, Caitlin Snow's journey, plans for Wells, and Cisco and Gypsy. http://ew.com/tv/2017/10/03/flash-season-4-premiere-spoilers/ FEEDBACK The Starling Tribune @StarlingTribune Oct 12 - The whole hour could've been @JulianaHarkavy & @MzKatieCassidy fighting & I would be happy. Asked about Diggle's greatest challenge going into Season 6, Ramsey replied, “We have to break Diggle. I think Season 6 we'll see Diggle get broken in a way he hasn't been broken before. It already starts in [the first episode], and I think there's a certain amount of it that will continue throughout the season. I think it's an arc for Diggle that we haven't seen, even beyond his brother coming back to life and killing his evil brother and that leading to the death of the Canary.” Diggle's brokenness will — in part — come from the trauma of his island experience will “greatly affect the whole team.” Diggle is typically an open book — keeping both Team Arrow and Lyla informed about what's going on in his life. With these “monumental” physical and mental changes happening to him, it sounds like we're going to see a version of Diggle we have never seen before. http://www.cbr.com/diggle-broken-arrow-season-6/ ‘Arrow' Adds Sydelle Noel for Season 6 (EXCLUSIVE) (Date: 04 Aug 2017) The CW's first DC show, “Arrow,” has cast Sydelle Noel in a recurring role for its sixth season, Variety has learned exclusively. Noel will play Samanda Watson, an FBI agent who will be investigating Oliver Queen's connection to the Green Arrow. Noel was most recently seen on “GLOW” on Netflix, and she also has a role in Marvel's upcoming “Blank Panther” movie. http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/arrow-season-6-casting-sydelle-noel-exclusive-1202515492/ ‘Arrow' Producers Already Have Plans For Season 7 [TCA 2017] (Date: 03 Aug 2017) While previewing season six with the Television Critics Association after a panel for Legends, producer Marc Guggenheim, who also co-created and produces Arrow, said the Arrow writers already have ideas for season seven. “We've already started talking about ooh, we have a shape for season seven already,” Guggenheim said. “This is the earliest we've ever had an idea for a season that far ahead, but it's come out of our conversations about season six.” Beyond season seven, it may be time to begin thinking about giving Arrow a proper series finale. However, when that inevitable time comes, Guggenheim would not require long-term planning to deliver the ending he and co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg have planned. “I think we've always had an endpoint in mind,” Guggenheim said. “We've always known how we want to end the show. That end point doesn't require X number of seasons. If we had to, we could work towards it as long as we knew with enough leeway, we could work towards the moment we've been talking about since day one.” http://www.slashfilm.com/arrow-producers-already-have-plans-for-season-7-tca-2017/ CW Announces Fall Dates For DC Superhero Crossovers – TCA (Date: 02 Aug 2017) CW announced that the first night of this season's WBTV/DC superhero crossover will be Monday, Nov. 27 when Supergirl will be paired with Arrow. That day reps a one time move to Monday for the special occasion. The crossover concludes Nov. 28 with The Flash in DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Commenting on the crossovers going from four nights last season to two this fall, CW president Mark Pedowitz said, “Last year's (crossover) was the most successful week in CW history in terms of ratings and everything. We felt in this particular case we had Flash on Legends paired, so it was better to make it two two-hour movies – a miniseries – we thought this was the best way to go. We had a lot of conversations with producers and marketing people.” http://deadline.com/2017/08/the-flash-arrow-supergirl-dc-legends-of-tomorrow-dc-superhero-crossovers-1202140712/ GENERAL DC TV NEWS DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW: SEASON 3'S SUPERNATURAL VILLAIN RECRUITS GORILLA GRODD (Date: 02 Aug 2017) "At the head of whatever you want to call our evil organization, it's different. Last year it was three characters from the three different shows that form this alliance. This is a non-human entity," executive producer Phil Klemmer told IGN at the 2017 TV Critics' Association summer press tour. "This is a much more supernatural, spooky vibe this season. We're dealing more with magic. It's less real-world bad guys." Klemmer was keen to leave that character a secret, but he did promise you will hear the character's name in the Season 3 premiere. Unlike previous seasons which are more science or time-travel focused, Season 3 of Legends will "be more in the world of the occult and monsters." Following behind this leader as his acolytes are familiar characters like Damien Darhk, who will have been brought back to life after his death on Arrow, as well as Gorilla Grodd. This will be a post-Gorilla City Grodd. Klemmer confirms they're still actively campaigning for Matt Ryan's Constantine to appear on Legends of Tomorrow as well. http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/08/02/dcs-legends-of-tomorrow-season-3s-supernatural-villain-recruits-gorilla-grodd?abthid=598251bfd41dd1f256000030 The Flash Casts Iconic Justice League Member For Season 4 (Date 31 July 2017) The CW has cast Hartley Sawyer in the role of Ralph Dibny, who will play a recurring role in the upcoming, fourth season of The Flash. One of the Flash's most iconic allies, Ralph Dibny -- a.k.a. The Elongated Man — is a fast-talking private investigator with investigative skills that rival those of Batman. Upon discovering he has the power to stretch his body to any shape or form, Dibny uses his new abilities to help Team Flash solve one of Central City's greatest mysteries. http://comicbook.com/dc/2017/07/31/the-flash-casts-iconic-justice-league-member-for-season-4/?utm_source=Comicbook.com&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=170731_171252_Comicbook.com+Daily+Newsletter&utm_content=Link ‘DC's Legends Of Tomorrow': Jes Macallan To Recur In Season 3 (Date 01 Aug 2017) Mistresses alumna Jes Macallan has signed on for a recurring role in the third season of the CW's superhero drama DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Macallan will play Special Agent Ava Sharpe, a hard working agent for a secret branch of the Federal Government (the Time Bureau) dedicated to the regulation of time-travel and the protection of history. http://deadline.com/2017/08/dcs-legends-of-tomorrow-jes-macallan-recur-season-3-the-cw-mistresses-1202140467/ Spoiler Room: Scoop on Game of Thrones, The Flash, Supergirl, and more (Date: 03 Aug 2017) What do you have on Barry's return to The Flash? — Apparently, not everyone will be on board with how to go about getting Barry back. “I wish I could say that the team unanimously agrees that things are not the same when the season starts, but not everybody feels that way,” Carlos Valdes tells me. “Most of the energy on the team is toward getting Barry back, and Cisco may or may not have some things up his sleeve with regards with how to make that happen, but there is a member of the team that's not on board, and that ultimately makes the mission to get Barry back a lot more difficult. But the thing about Cisco is if he wants to get his friends back, he will do whatever it takes the get his friends back — and that's not just Barry.” With Floriana Lima not sticking around as a regular, is there any hope you can give for Sanvers on Supergirl? — Yes, Floriana Lima won't be a series regular next season, but the Supergirl bosses hope to keep her around as much as possible. So in the plus column, it really does sound like her character won't meet a grim fate. “Maggie is welcome to come back any time she's free,” EP Jessica Queller says. “We love Sanvers and we're very sad that Floriana is not available full time this season.” EP Robert Rovner adds: “We love this relationship we've created. With that, we're going to be telling a modern day love story that really honors their relationship that hopefully will resonate and I think will be very satisfying. Hopefully, she will come join us [again]. The door is always open for Floriana Lima.” http://ew.com/tv/2017/08/03/spoiler-room-game-thrones-flash-supergirl/ Legends of Tomorrow Casts Spartacus Actor as Julius Caesar (Date 05 Aug 2017) When the show resumes this fall, the Legends will travel from present day 2017 to Ancient Rome. When in Rome, the Legends will run into none other than the infamous Julius Caesar. CBR has confirmed that Julius Caesar will be played by actor Simon Merrells. Merrells previously starred on The CW's The Tomorrow People with The Flash's Robbie Amell. Marrells is also the sixth Spartacus actor to join the Arrowverse, which includes Manu Bennett, Todd Lasance, Liam McIntyre, Nick Tarabay, and Katrina Law. http://www.cbr.com/legends-of-tomorrow-simon-merrells-julius-caesar/ Supergirl Casts 24 Vet Carlos Bernard as Maggie's [Spoiler] in Season 3 (Date: 04 Aug 2017) 24 alum Carlos Bernard will guest-star during Season 3 of the CW series as Maggie Sawyer's father, TVLine has learned. http://tvline.com/2017/08/04/supergirl-casts-carlos-bernard-season-3-maggie-father-oscar/ NEXT EPISODE Link to Promo: (Date: 15 March 2017) https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/legends_of_tomorrow/legends-of-tomorrow-check-out-the-new-extended-promo-for-season-2-episode-15-fellowship-of-the-spear-a149633 Episode: “Fellowship of the Spear” [Season 2 Episode 14] Air Date: Tuesday, March 21, 2017 Summary: The Legends land in France during World War I and enlist the aid of J.R.R.
