Show notes provided by Joe PelusoThis trip to Joe's Comics' Corner transports us a thousand years into the future and then like sling-shooting around the Sun (Star Trek IV), way back to the sizzling sixties. If our heads are spinning, it's not so much from the voyage through time, but rather the joyful discovery of two classic comics that accompanied us on our journey! Yes, James and Joe are back "at the corner" perusing the newsstand and findingtwo rare gems--Adventure Comics #369 and #370. This is the pair of Silver Age Legion of Super-Heroes stories that introduces the mad, menacing, maniacal, magician--MORDRU! Written by then a teen age Jim Shooter, and pencilled and inked by Curt Swan and Jack Abel, this two parter is a quintessential package of all the verve, outrageousness, silliness, and far out fun that the scintillating sixties offered on a regular basis. From the rare retelling of a character's first appearance we never saw, to themind-blowing (for James) meeting of Lana Lang--Insect Queen, to the sleepy hamlet of Smallville and the terrifying flight from Mordru's sorcery, this one has it all! Oh, did I mention the teen angst? Yup it's all there amidst the struggle to survive in a past era that's unlike anything from the far-flung future of the 30th century. Oh a word to the wise: The next time you visit the Kent's homedon't sneak down to the basement--you might not make it back up the stairs!

This week on Bros, Foes & Heroes, we're continuing our month of spotlighting female creators in comics and we're diving deep (pun intended) into the legacy of Ramona Fradon, one of the only women working in comics in the early 1950s. She started drawing Aquaman as a backup strip in Adventure Comics and ended up defining the character's look for over a decade. So if you picture the classic Aquaman, you're picturing her work. We cover two of her Aquaman stories, talk about her fascinating origin in the industry (art school, a husband who drew for The New Yorker, and a connection that got her through DC's door), her later work on Brenda Starr, Reporter, and how she helped create Metamorpho. Plus, we get into the wild history of why Batgirl was created, a Family Circus ghost rabbit hole, and even more fun. #aquaman #dccomics #comicbookhistory #brosfoesandheroes #comicbookpodcast #comicbooks #womenincomics #femalecreators #comicbookart #comics Thank you to our sponsors! Show notes provided by Joe PelusoIn the late Summer of 1996 DC Comics decided to dim the lights byblowing out the Sun! A cosmic force known as The Sun-Eater (first seenway back in Adventure Comics #352 from November 1966!) came calling to snuff out all life on Earth! Chronicled in a weekly event, the storywas entitled "The Final Night".And it sure as heck would've been, ifnot for the timely, last minute intervention of a once great seminalhero who had recently gone rogue. Join hosts James, Chris, and Joe as they "shed light on" (Sorry,Chris, you know--low-hanging fruit.) on a new DC event that taxedEarth's greatest heroes in a race to save the world from becoming apopsicle. All kidding aside, this fast-paced saga had major stakes, major tragedies, and major repercussions for the DCU. Seven days to restart the sun, or all life on Earth perishes.Superman, cut off from solar rays, is weakening by the day. KyleRayner, Earth's only Green Lantern, chucks a "Hail Mary" like BretFarve into space to convince the one and only capable "entity"Parallax (Hal Jordan ) to save the Earth. Lex Luthor is brought in towork with Brainiac 5. And Batman, as usual, multitasks. It's a fun event told in four issues, one special issue, and oneaftermath remembrance issue, with limited tie-ins, that doesn't breakthe banks of loyal DC fans. Also there are some "heavy" discussions onthe meaning of heroes and villains, and loss and redemption, that wethink you will find quite interesting. It's been thirty years sincethis story dropped. No alternate dimensions, maddening multiverses, ortime travel trickery, just a solid story of survival on both the grandand human scale.

The Speakers of Geek return to their reading piles to discuss various current titles such as Krypto's first appearance in Adventure Comics 210 facsimile, Namor by Aaron, Davidson, Lins and company, Fire & Ice and Justice League Unlimited, the works of Taiyo Matsumoto, early Black Label titles, the New History of the DC Universe and others. We also cover the new first issue of Captain America by Zdarsky, Schiti and company and “Birthday” from Action Comics 1087 by Waid, Patridge and company. And we manage to throw in comic talk on DC's use of legacy characters, Marvel's sliding timescale and more! (1:41:00)
In the upcoming movie Superman Krypto the Superdog is a very naughty boy indeed, and it turns out that's quite canonical, dating all the way back to his first appearance in Adventure Comics #210. Also in this issue: a story where Aquaman has to use sea creatures as a printing press. Before that: I may have discovered a loophole for superheroes' no killing policy, we discuss whether there's too much James Gunn and Derek has already seen Superman but is keeping his lips sealed until the next episode of Watch Men. Which you can get if you're a $5 or above member at the Patreon!Next week: the birth of Franklin Richards in Fantastic Four Annual 6!
What about that ending? We definitely argue about it for quite some time. A lot happens in these episodes, and new doors are opened in the MCU... but will anyone ever walk through them? Is it better to hope or to expect the worst? And does it take longer between sequels these days? Before that we have some news and we answer your questions, which leads us to wonder: what is a comic book crossover? Is it only between individual books? Does an overarching event with tie-ins count? And what's the worst one anyway? If you don't care about this skip right to 47:43.Next week: the first appearance of Krypto! Adventure Comics #210, which is available on the DC app but be warned: simply searching for the title won't serve it up to you. You have to search for the exact issue number. See you then!
We are traveling to Earth-383, a so-called Negative Earth first featured in Adventure Comics #383 (1969), where Supergirl seemingly perishes in an explosion and attends her own funeral—joined by the spirits of Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, and other ghostly figures! This Bronze Age tale was recently revisited in Back Issue #159 as part of a 40th anniversary retrospective on Crisis on Infinite Earths.Episode #163: What if Supergirl was dead and able to be amongst other dead people like Joan of Arc and Abraham Lincoln? from DC Comics Adventure Comics #383Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersWe're diving into the ethereal and existential! Then we haunt the haunted halls of Kara Zor-El's multiversal history and her celestial cinematic debut in the 1984 Supergirl movie. Along the way, we explore ghost stories, alternate deaths, and historical cameos in the DC Universe—then wrap with a look at how these odd tales ponder Supergirl's mythic potential.Reading / Watch List:Action Comics #252 (DC Comics, 1959) – Debut of Supergirl by Otto Binder & Al PlastinoAdventure Comics #383 (DC Comics, 1969) – “Please Stop My Funeral!” by Robert Kanigher & Win MortimerSupergirl: The Official Movie Adaptation (DC Comics, 1985) – Based on the 1984 filmSupergirl (film) (Tri-Star Pictures, 1984) – Directed by Jeannot Szwarc, starring Helen SlaterEmail: Podcast@DearWatchers.comFind us & support us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersTheme music is Space Heroes by MaxKoMusic (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0)★ Support this podcast ★ ★ Support this podcast ★

Host Anthony Desiato presents another double feature as the "All-Star Superboy" event draws to an epic conclusion! First, Anthony and guest Scott Honig dig into Geoff Johns' legendary run on TEEN TITANS with artist Mike McKone and others — which revealed that half of Superboy's DNA came from Lex Luthor, introduced the now-iconic t-shirt & jeans look, and established the Conner Kent civilian identity.THEN! Anthony welcomes first-time guest Adam Daltorio to dig into the post-resurrection, pre-New 52 Conner stories "The Boy of Steel" (from ADVENTURE COMICS by Geoff Johns & Francis Manapul) and "Smallville Attacks" (from the 2010-2011 SUPERBOY series by Jeff Lemire & Pier Gallo). The episode also addresses Conner's 2019 return to continuity, current status quo, and adaptations on SMALLVILLE, YOUNG JUSTICE, and TITANS.This marks the conclusion of the podcast's Conner Kent coverage. The Legion are not known as well today as they were 30 years ago, but by the 1980's they were a critical and commercial success at DC Comics.
