Luxon's stuck. Poor old Luxon, he's stuck between a rock and a hard place really, isn't he? And it's only going to get worse as we head into next year. Just when he's done dealing with David Seymour on the Treaty Principles Bill - he never wanted to go with but agreed to get into government. That was shut down on Thursday and now the fire kicks off - he's having to hose that down too. He's been hosing it down since last Friday now. That's Winston and his big noting about how to deal with Trump, right. The phone calls that Luxon hastily arranged to avoid being in the House for the death of the Treaty Principles Bill are the same phone calls that have now started this tussle with Winston? He just can't win. Either way, there's coalition land mines to step on. Here's the thing, Winston first made these comments last Thursday. He said Luxon should have called them or whatever the words were. So, he should have just picked up the phone, called them straight away, squared it off, have it out, whatever, move on. Instead, you're trying to announce a tourism boost at Sky City on Monday and it's still dragging out. Some journalist in the press conference yesterday even asked Luxon whether he'd apologised to Winston Peters. For goodness sakes, what an outrageous question. For the record, Luxon gave a speech basically saying he supports free trade. Big deal we all do. Then he calls a couple of world leaders he's met and tells them he likes free trade. Big deal, guess what? That's fine because he's the Prime Minister. That's actually his job. He is the boss. Winston's just feeling a bit left out over in Tonga obviously, so he's running his mouth off. What does Luxon do? Does he just have a private call and hope that Winston calms down? Or does he take a harder line in public with Winston? Call him out? Tell us he's only the Foreign Minister, not the Prime Minister, and he should stay in his lane. Whatever the strategy, he needs to figure it out quick smart. As I wrote about at the weekend, Winston's only just getting started. There's an election to fight next year and he'll be unshackled from the Deputy PM reins next month. Then it's all on for young and old. And Luxon this week has been warned. SkyCity and the TAB have complained there won't be a level playing field when the new regulations for online gambling kick in. The Government is set to auction off 15 online casino licences - and both local and international companies will be allowed to bid on the licences. Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden says it's important proper regulations are put in place. "We are enabling people to play safely in a regulated market - which is not the case at the moment. But we are also not trying to restrict it so much that we're not actually channelling people into that market." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sky City says a February opening date for its International Convention Centre is prudent. One of the most impressive places in Sri Lanka is Sigiriya, a site often named the 8th wonder of the world. Sigiriya was also home to an ancient city that sat atop the monolithic rock towering 650 feet over the town of Dambulla in the Matale District of Sri Lanka. The site attracts thousands of tourists daily and has been a UNESCO heritage site since 1982. Many believe that the giant monolithic rock looks unnatural because of its perfectly flat top, which almost looks like it's been cut at a precise angle. The locals believe this ancient site was built thousands of years ago by an ancient Hindu god, named Ravana, who was part of an advanced race of beings known as the Asura. These deities are said to have come down from the sky and ruled over portions of humanity. There are strange scoop marks and holes in the rock, and at the top, there are bricks, marble blocks, and an enormous granite water tank found in the middle of the site. How all of them were built and how ancient carried the materials to the top is still unexplained.

Resignations by Fletcher Construction's two top players can be traced back to a single project. The company has reported a $120 million half-year loss after tax. Chief Executive Ross Taylor and Chair Bruce Hassall have announced they'll both leave this year. Taylor says remediation for the SkyCity fire in 2019 was the most complicated thing he's seen in 40 years in the industry. "We basically progressively only understood what we were up against- and then we had to re-forecast. In the end, I think the team's done a great job to keep it on track, program wise, and we really couldn't forecast until we worked out how to do this stuff." Sky City might have to down the gambling chips after being referred to the regulator over a possible host responsibility breach. The casino operator could have its licence suspended for up to 10 days, because of the amount of time one customer was able to spend gambling over a period of three and a half years. The Department of Internal Affairs says it was in breach of Sky City's harm minimisation obligations. The customer made a complaint after a gambling spree that lasted from August 2017 to February 2021. It's now up to the Gambling Commission to decide whether or not to suspend SkyCity's licence. Casino operator SkyCity had nearly quarter of a billion dollars wiped off its market value today after the Department of Internal Affairs applied to suspend its gaming licence. SkyCity's accused of failing to uphold its host responsibilities due to the amount of time one customer was able to spend gambling between August 2017 and February 2021. The news has prompted organisations like the Problem Gambling Foundation and Asian Family Services to call for more robust gambling harm reduction measures. Delphine Herbert reports.
The Problem Gambling Foundation would like regulators to bring in stricter rules for casinos. SkyCity had over a quarter of a billion dollars wiped off its market value yesterday, after Internal Affairs applied to suspend its gaming licence. It accused the casino of failing to uphold its host responsibilities relating to the amount of time a customer was able to spend gambling. Andree Froude of the Problem Gambling Foundation says people can spend five hours gambling in a casino before hosts are meant to intervene, and she'd like that limit reduced. Froude spoke to Corin Dann.
There's more uncertainty ahead for gaming company SkyCity as it faces the risk of having its casino licence suspended. Anan Zaki has the business news.
The Problem Gambling Foundation says gambling outlets should take note. Internal Affairs has applied for a temporary suspension of SkyCity's gambling licence, after a former gambler complained. It's accused Sky City of not meeting Host Responsibility rules, relating to detecting a client's continuous play. The share market reacted to the application by wiping $260 million off the company's market value today. Foundation spokesperson Andree Froude says this suspension will warn SkyCity and other gambling operators about the seriousness of breaching the rules. New Zealand-based casinos are launching unregulated online gambling platforms out of Malta, which bypass local regulations. In New Zealand, it's illegal for casinos to provide online gambling services, but it is legal for people to gamble on offshore websites. Moving operations to Malta means these casinos still reach New Zealand customers -- however our laws and regulations do not apply, and communities do not benefit from taxes and levies. Christchurch Casino's new online operation out of Malta follows Sky City's launch from the same country back in 2019. Under the Gambling Act, government-owned Lotto and the T.A.B are the only operators able to offer online services. The Department of Internal Affairs is looking to update and modernise the two-decade old legislation for a more online world, which may allow more online gambling platforms to operate here legally. Kathryn speaks to Maria Bellringer, the director of AUT's Gambling and Addictions Research Centre.
