This time on the Couch: Mike, James, and Shée cast their judgement on Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen no. 134! Jack Kirby had just begun his massive Fourth World saga, kicking it off the way all great stories start: With a ginger kid leading a gang of space bikers into a secret dimension! After using his newfound authority to get Superman to stop being such a buzzkill about "safety" and "reckless endangerment," Olsen's free to take a group of children on a hyperspeed, fourth-dimensional joyride for reasons nobody bothers explaining! Dude, when you're this high, the most conspicuous thing you can do is start asking for things to make sense.

Find out if Maggie's irrational hatred is enough to withstand wacky stretchy hero shenanigans, Superman rescuing Jimmy from Hell,  Superman rescuing Turtle Boy from falling from orbit, and Jimmy faking his death and hiding out in Gotham City We also sing way more of the Plastic Man song from the Justice League Record than is probably comfortable and Maggie also expresses her opinion on the Spin Doctors.  Also we debut a new feature: Married with Context, where we talk about what else was going on during the months that the issues were on the stands.  Find out if Maggie's hatred is here to stay or if she stops worrying and learns to love Jimmy Olsen.

Twin brothers Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá are international comic book powerhouses whether doing a project together or apart. The two artists have collaborated on comics like the Eisner-award-winning Day Tripper and Two Brothers and the comic book adaption of Neil Gaiman's How to Talk to Girls at Parties. They are equally potent as separate entities (although, they're never really separate since they share a studio). Of course, you know Gabriel as the co-creator of Umbrella Academy with Gerard Way (lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance) and Fabio as the co-creator of Casanova with Matt Fraction (Sex Criminals, Hawkeye, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen). The twins came to Speech Bubble's Never Sleeps Network studios in Toronto all the way from São Paulo, Brazil, as a stop-over before 2019's Toronto Comic Art Festival, for a rare and exclusive long-form interview together. During the interview they discuss their special bond as twins, doing everything together, including living together and sharing the same bedroom until they were 23, and explain how drawing became their twin special language from a very early age. They also explain that because they are so bonded, personal relationships are a key part of what they like to unpack and explore when doing comics together. It was their fascination with the way stories unlock a person's imagination, in conjunction with the art, that turned them toward comics as an interest and eventual career. They chronicle their rise from doing fan zines in Brazil to working on some of the American comic industry's hottest projects with some of its best known creators and how hard, but also necessary, it was to break into the American market if they were ever going to be successful as comic artists. Listeners will also hear about how reflecting on his own death in the shower and how fleeting life actually is, lead to Gabriel coming up with the concept for Day Tripper and how that subsequent Eisner win put both brothers on the map. They also share how being twins and growing up consuming the same media influences their process, with the story always being at the centre in governing who will draw what and their distinctive drawing styles (Gabriel inks with a pen and Fabio inks with a brush) fitting each story differently.Of course, you'll hear about Umbrella Academy too. You'll learn how Gabriel feels about the comic being adapted by Netflix and whether the two are competitive with each other about their different levels of success and fame. Adventure Comics #316 The Renegade Super-Hero! January 1964 w: Edmond Hamilton a: John Forte While going through criminal records for one of their current missions, the Legion comes across a record identifying their own member Ultra-Boy as an escaped criminal. Learning that it's true, the Legion puts it to a vote and Ultra-Boy is expelled from the Legion. Enraged that he's been expelled, Ultra-Boy tells the Legion that he will now work against them, and flees the planet to escape from them. The Legion tries to take in Ultra-Boy for his crimes, but each time they track him down, Ultra-Boy is able to evade capture. While fleeing the Legion, Ultra-Boy aids a number of humans who have had their minds placed into alien creatures before resuming his escape from the Legion. When hiding out on the phantom planet, Phantom Girl manages to track him down and warn him of the Legion's impending arrival, and they are captured by the aliens responsible for the rash of crimes that the Legion was investigating before going after Ultra-Boy. The aliens, having heard of Ultra-Boy's expulsion from the Legion's ranks offer him a chance to join them, and Ultra-Boy aids them in incapacitating the Legion. However, Ultra-Boy suddenly turns on his alien benefactors and captures them and frees the Legion. Ultra-Boy and Cosmic Boy then reveal that the entire episode was a ruse, where they planted evidence making it appear as though Ultra-Boy was a hunted criminal to lure out the real criminals. With the culprits caught, the Legion reinstate Ultra-Boy as one of their members. - via DC Wikia Adventure Comics #317 The Menace of Dream Girl! February 1964 w: Edmond Hamilton a: John Forte While the Legion of Super-Heroes attempts to figure out what the Time Trapper is up too, they find opposition in the way of a barrier protecting the future era in which he resides, keeping the Legion from monitoring his activities. In the meantime, the Legion induct a new member, Dream Girl, who is voted in because all of the male members of the Legion become instantly attracted to her and vote her into the Legion. Things start to get suspicious, as Dream Girl ends up entrapping various Legion members on disciplinary actions, leading to their temporary suspension from the Legion. After taking Ultra-Boy, Bouncing Boy, Shrinking Violet, Lightning Lad, and Lightning Lass to an alien world which causes them to de-age into infants (except for Dream Girl who took a preventative antidote) most of the Legion is on suspension. However, Dream Girl later reveals to Star Boy, that her power is to see the future through dreams, and the reason she has manipulated events is because she forsaw the Legion being killed in a rocket explosion, and that she did everything she could to prevent the Legion members from dieing. Star Boy then reveals to Dream Girl that what she saw was really a planned rocket flight with robot doubles of the Legion. Afterwards, all is explained and Dream Girl decides to leave the Legion to hone her powers, but not before seeing the other Legion members -- restored to their natural ages -- and learning that the episode gave Lightning Lass new powers over density, Dream Girl rechristens her Light Lass. - via DC Wikia LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: THE SILVER AGE OMNIBUS Originally introduced in 1958, the Legion of Super-Heroes is a team of super-powered teenagers from the disparate worlds of the 30th century's United Planets. October 1963 w: Jerry Siegel a: Curt Swan "Jimmy is taking part in a televised showcase of has many adventures, focusing particularly on the formula that turns him into Elastic Lad, and his various other transformations over the years. His special is suddenly interrupted by an alien creature calling itself the Collector who kidnaps Jimmy with it's scientific devices. Jimmy finds himself transported to an alien world where the Collector hopes to make a collection of all the various incarnations of Jimmy Olsen. Rooting Jimmy to the group (by literally turning his feet into tree roots) the Collector keeps Superman at bay as well and apparently brings forth the giant monster Jimmy, the wolfman Jimmy, porcupine Jimmy and fat Jimmy before the real Jimmy. These alternate versions of him terrorize him before they themselves are rooted into the ground. Before the Collector can do anything else Jimmy suddenly pulls the microphone that's been attached to him since the TV interview, and throws it at the Collector scaring the creature, thus proving to Jimmy that it's a ruse. Jimmy had deduced that the "Collector" is really Mon-El in disguise (due to his reaction to the microphone which was made with some lead parts which used to be a weakness for Mon-El) and that the other "Jimmy's" are really other members of the Legion of Super-Heroes (who are revealed to be Colossal Boy, Chameleon Boy and his new pet Proty II, Cosmic Boy, and Bouncing Boy.) Jimmy learns that this was all planned by the Legion and Superman as an initiation for Jimmy, who is taken to the 30th Century where he is awarded an honorary membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes." - via DC Wikia Adventure Comics #315 The Legionnaires' Super-Contest! December 1963 w: Edmond Hamilton a: John Forte "While the Legion of Super-Heroes is attending a law enforcement convention, the Legion the Substitute Heroes fills in for them while they are absent. The Substitutes save a rocket from crashing, their deed is seen by Superboy's x-ray vision. With their existence revealed to the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Legion recognizes them as rejected Legion applicants and the Legion decides to give them another opportunity to apply for membership. Each Substitute is sent on a different mission with various members of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and use their talents to help solve each mission. Returning from their missions, each Substitute member has their performance graded. Stone Boy ends up getting the highest score and is offered membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes, however, enjoying his membership in the Substitutes, Stone Boy declines membership to remain with his friends in the Legion of Substitute Heroes." - via DC Wikia LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: THE SILVER AGE OMNIBUS Originally introduced in 1958, the Legion of Super-Heroes is a team of super-powered teenagers from the disparate worlds of the 30th century's United Planets.
