Greetings, dear listener, and welcome back to "Jump on the Bat-Wagon" with James and Brian, where we watch through the entire DC Animated Universe from start to finish in the controversial airdate order, to experience these shows the way human beings experienced them in the far-gone days of the 1990s. Hey Girls and Boys, Lads and Lasses, the biggest superhero team on any Earth, The Legion of Super-Heroes, tangles with the villainous Time Trapper as he turns their former ally Superboy against them. It's an ambitious story in the post-Crisis world that serves as a template for DC storytelling to this day. We discuss this all with Legion super-fan and "DC Book of Lists" author Randall Lotowycz!Ep. 94 What If the Time Trapper created a pocket universe to turn Superboy against the Legion of Super-Heroes?With Special Guest author and editor Randall LotowyczEarth of an unknown designation as seen in the Superman & Legion of Super-Heroes crossoverThe Legion of Super-Heroes can seem intimidating with their 20+ members from the traditional members like Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and Mon-El to the wacky powered beings like Matter Eating Lad, Shrinking Violet, and Bouncing Boy, which is why we break down this team from the 60s through their major turning point post crisis in the 1980s. We travel through a multi issue arc constructed by major architects Paul Levitz and John Byrne that sees the Legion and Superman battle their old friend Superboy in a pocket universe, all controlled by the mysterious cloaked Time Trapper. We also discuss Time Trapper co-creator and Weird Tales writer Edmund Hamilton and how we are still seeing the reverberations of this story in DC's current multiverse and alternate Earth storytelling on film and TV - including the upcoming Flash film from 2023 and more! Finally, we speculate what's next for the Time Trapper and whether Marvel's Kang stole his onscreen...time. We are joined by special returning guest, author and editor Randall Lotowycz.Follow Randall on his website or on Twitter or Instagram. So for the 100th episode of the Character Corner, Kriss & Dpalm are finally back on the DC side and we decided we didn't want to make it easy on ourselves and so we're tackling the Legion of Super-Heroes. The the history of the Legion of Super-Heroes is one that rivals Wonder Woman, Donna Troy and Hawkman as having some oof the most convoluted and rebooted/retconned history on the DC side. There are several reasons for why the history of the Legion is so hard to pin down. Part of that is like with a lot of these characters, it was never the plan for them to be around as long as they were. That coupled with a few other things make the Legion really hard to follow a history on: They're from the future. The 30th century (and 31st century) and time travel almost always makes things messy Their history is centered around Superboy So the first isn't too big of a deal. there's a lot of characters in DC history that play around with time. But when it comes to tying the characters to  to Superboy…the follow up question has to be: Which One?   Now we've covered Superboy's history on another episode but there's going to be some overlap here. Particularly in the early years of the Legion.  Remember, there is a version of Superboy, particular the one we're talking about with the Legion that is a version of Clark Kent that later grows up to become Superman. Some other notable Superboy versions: Superboy Prime - From earth prime. Earth destroyed during Crisis. Becomes a villain The Metropolis Kid/Connor Kent (the clone) But for the Legion, we're talking Earth-1 Superboy (Later Pocket Universe Superboy which we will get into in episode 2). For this episode we keep it nice and simple and cover all the way up to the Great Darkness Saga which is still pre-crisis and before things get all weird. We focus mostly on how the concepts and early stories for the Legion of Super-Heroes really laid the groundwork for a lot of modern stories both in and out of comics. In episode 2 we'll really dive down into some of the specific characters as well as try to unwrap the craziness that happens post-crisis.    Issues: Adventure Comics #247 - First Appearance First Appearance of Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad/Boy Adventure Comics #267 - Second Appearance Adventure Comics #304 - “Death” of Lightning Lad Adventure Comics #329 - Brainiac 5 Introduces the Legion's Flight Ring Adventure Comics #346 - Jim Shooter's first story. This event ran 28 issues, so we broke this up over four sessions. If you are just tuning in for Part 4, well, don't blame us if we spoil the ending. (Truthfully, we know that many of our listeners love us! But it doesn't hurt to remind us every now and then via email.) We also discuss the passing of artist Ernie Colón. The jack-of-all-trades worked for most every publisher at some point during his nearly 50-year career. Legends #4 Warlord #114 Cosmic Boy #3 Justice League of America #260 Blue Beetle #10 Warlord #115 Superman #3 Now, if we just had Legends to talk about, that would probably be a full show on it's own. Cullen and Jerry each went to a creator signing last week, and have some stories to share. We do a run down of House of X #1 from Marvel Comics. And we even talk about The Boys which debuted on Amazon Prime over the weekend. But wait, there's more, as we also have our Pick 3 for new books coming out next week. Adventure Comics #301 The Secret Origin of Bouncing Boy October 1962 w: Jerry Siegel a: John Forte The Legion holds an "open audition". They reject a powerless rich kid named Lester Spiffany and an applicant called Storm Boy who fakes his powers with a hidden weather control device. Bouncing Boy is then randomly chosen to tell his origin. After gaining his bouncing powers by accidentally drinking a super-plastic formula, he is rejected for Legion membership. November 1962 w: Jerry Siegel a: John Forte Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Sun-Boy make a trip to Metropolis where the people are unveiling the first of a series of statues in honor of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The first statue is revealed to be of Sun-Boy, who has to use his powers to destroy the statue when it begins to topple, threatening to crush spectators of the event. Flying back to headquarters later, Sun-Boy realizes his powers have run out when he cannot use them to illuminate a city going through a black out. This prompts Sun-Boy to try and restore his powers, using a similar atomic device that first gave him his powers, and later a volcano, however both attempts fail to restore them. When an entomologist visits the Legions base to gift them with insects from other planets, Sun-Boy's powers briefly come back. Later when Ultra-Boy and Superboys arrive for a scheduled meeting, Sun-Boy asks them to help try to restore his powers using a mirror device and both heroes x-ray visions. This attempt also fails. After giving up, Sun-Boy accepts the fact that his powers are gone, and he is asked to resign from the Legion, he cleans out his locker and supplies and leaves. Later, while watching the Legion in action, Sun-Boy is visited by Bouncing Boy who has come to take his Legion monitor. Later, Kranyak, a villain which Sun-Boy helped incarcerate, learns of the news about Sun-Boy's powers escapes from prison. Reuniting with his gang, Kranyak attacks Sun-Boy to learn if the stories are true. Learning that they are indeed true, Kranyak tells Sun-Boy that he is going to destroy the other Legionaries. Realizing how to finally restore his powers, Sun-Boy travels to the planet Lurna. There he makes a flame-beast blast him with it's flame breath, this miraculously restores his powers. Sun-Boy then returns to Earth where he stops Kranyak and his gang from crushing the Legion's base with a giant chunk of ice and easily defeats the crook. After Kranyak has been turned over, Sun-Boy explains to the Legion how his powers were restored: That the only way his powers could be restored would be exposure to sufficient heat energy from living creature that has heat-based powers. He goes on to explain he figured it out when he touched a firefly from the planet Lurna, and so went there find a creature with stronger flame powers. He also explains that the reason why his powers weren't restored by Superboy and Ultra Boy is because they are really robots. This was figured out while Sun-Boy watched the Legion in action and the two heroes were drawn towards Cosmic Boy whenever he used his magnetic powers. When revealed as robots, the Legion checks out their inner workings and learn that they were sent to the future by Ultra Boy and Superboy, who were busy in the 20th Century celebrating the birthday of Pete Ross. The robots were sent to the future to take their place, and they caught caught in a storm during their travel through the time barrier which caused them to forget they were really robots. With all the loose ends tied up, Sun-Boy is welcomed back into the ranks of the Legion of Super-Heroes. - via DC Wikia

Afterward, Superboy suddenly snaps again and is about to throw Krypto into space along the path of a Kryptonite meteor, however he snaps out of it again. Before Superboy can learn the source of his uncharacteristic behavior, he receives a call from the Legion of Super-Heroes. Going to the designated meeting place, Superboy meets with Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad who have come to Earth to get Superboy's aid updating their records of which Kryptonian criminals had been banished to the Phantom Zone before Krypton's destruction. As Superboy is showing the Legion, Mon-El suddenly appears and warns Superboy that the Legion plans on betraying him and freeing the Phantom Zone criminals. The Legion members then suddenly blast Superboy with special Kryptonite rings that incapacitate the boy of Steel. It's revealed that the Legion are under the control of the Brain Globes of Rambat, who seek to conquer the Earth, but saw Superboy as their only obstacle. With Superboy defeated, and not considering the Legion members as a threat, the Brain Globes free the Legion and prepare for their conquest. Realizing that the globes had no effect on Krypto prompt the Legion to travel through time and collect Comet the Super-horse, Streaky the Super-cat, and Beppo the Super-monkey to form the Legion of Super-Pets. With the aid of the Super-Pets, the Legion of Super-Heroes are able to defeat the Brain Globes and force them to abandon their goals of conquest. Supergirl rushes off to prevent the entrance from being seen. Returning home once more she gets a signal from the Legion of Super-Heroes to visit them in the 30th Century. At first she wonders why the Legion called her because they all appear to be busy doing other things, however she strangely finds them at the Legion's headquarters. The Legion quickly have her board their ship to go out into space to stop the Positive Man. Supergirl succeeds in doing so by attracting a negative creature from space to cause the two to explode. Returning to Earth, the Legion members find that their super-powers no longer work, and in order to avoid a crime spree, Supergirl with the help of Whizzy (the future descendant of her super-cat Streaky) help make it appear as though the Legion still has their super-powers by helping them out behind the scenes. However, this is all a trick, and the "Legion" members are really members of the Chameleon men, alien shape changers who are posing as the Legion. With Supergirl's guard down, they use a Phantom Zone projector to shunt both Supergirl and Whizzy into the Phantom Zone. Using Whizzy's telepathic abilities, they gain the aid of the owner of an android factory they had saved earlier to send in an android resembling the Chameleon Men to enter the Legion base and free Supergirl and Whizzy. With the globes defeated, the Super-Pets return to their respective eras and Saturn Girl revives Superboy and informs him that she cannot tell him how they defeated the Brain Globes. She then sends Superboy to destroy the device the Brain Globes intended to use to move the Earth. Afterward, Superboy returns home to inform his family what came over him that day and his plan to clear things up with the authorities as well. - via DC Wikia Action Comics #287 Supergirl's Greatest Challenge April 1962 w: Jerry Siegel a: Jim Mooney After spending time at her friend Margie's house where her Superman fan-club has Lois Lane over as a guest visitor, Supergirl (as Linda Lee Danvers) returns home. There she is told by Fred Danvers that the sheriff is about to blow up the tree stump which hides the secret exit to their home which Supergirl uses to leave unseen. Supergirl then quickly defeats the Chameleon Men, trapping them in a transparent dome, and freeing the other Legion members. After she says goodbye to the Legion and Whizzy and returns to her own time and relates to the story to Streaky. - via DC Wikia

Action Comics #267 The Three Super-Heroes August 1960 w: Jerry Siegel a: Jim Mooney After watching a demonstration put on by her cousin Superman in her civilian guise of Linda Lee, Supergirl is visited by three teens who can exhibit extraordinary powers and happen to know Supergirl's secret identity. Supergirl decides to finally investigate when these teens manage to activate her Linda Lee robot. Upon confronting these teens, they reveal themselves to be Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl, members of the Legion of Super-Heroes from the 30th Century. When Supergirl recalls her cousin telling her of his induction into the Legion when he was Superboy, the Legion members tell her that they are the children of the original Legion and that they want her to join their ranks. Traveling to the 30th Century, Supergirl meets other new members of the Legion: Chameleon Boy who can change shapes, Invisible Lad who can turn invisible, and Colossal Boy who can grow to titanic heights. Her initiation into the group would require her to perform a super-feat for them. When it's learned that there is too much air traffic on the planet Earth, Supergirl digs a tunnel through the planet wide enough for air ships to fly through in order to lighten the load. However, when she emerges and returns to the Legion, she is shocked that she is a full grown woman and therefor is no qualified to be a member of the Legion who does not admit anyone over the age of 18. Dismayed, the now Superwoman uses her X-Ray vision to find the cause, and finds that there was a chunk of Red Kryptonite that caused the change in her body. The Legion regretfully tells Superwoman that she will not be able to apply for membership for another year. Returning to her own time, and after the effects of the Kryptonite have worn off, Supergirl (in her civilian guise of Linda Lee) wonders if she'll be invited into the Legion again. - via DC Wikia Adventure Comics #282 Lana Lang and the Legion of Super-Heroes March 1961 w: Otto Binder a: George Papp Lana Lang is once more trying to win Superboy's affections, when the Boy of Steel is summoned to a cave near Smallville where he meets a super-hero calling himself Star Boy. Coming from the 30th Century and the planet Xanthu, Star Boy explains that he has similar super-powers to Superboy. He goes on to explain that he is also a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and that he has traveled into the past to stop two Xenthuian criminals who had escaped into this era and are hiding out on Earth. However, Starboy's X-ray vision cannot penetrate copper and so has asked Superboy's help who's x-ray vision will be able to see through the copper piping used in Smallville's water system to find the criminals, who have been hiding in underground caverns. Lana Lang stumbles upon the two young heroes just as they finished capturing the Xanthuian criminals, and in order to get Superboy jealous, Lana bluffs Star Boy into believing she overheard his secret identity and forces him to pretend to be her boyfriend in order to make Superboy jealous. Traveling to the 30th Century with Superboy and Star Boy, Lana has the latter do whatever it takes to try and make Superboy jealous. However, Superboy sees through this ploy and ignores everything and even goes so far as to "date" a Xantharian girl, which causes Lana herself to become jealous and admit to the whole deception. With Lana having learned her lesson, the two teens from the 20th Century return to their own time. - via DC Wikia

Seriously, we get that you are the smartest Legionnaire, but do you have to hold it over everyone else? Plus we find out that Kyle's legacy in the 30th Century is secure, both as himself and Green Lantern. Happy Friday, fair listeners, and welcome back to Just One of the Guys, a little show that talks about the Green Lantern books that came out between 1990 and 2004. This week is a special treat, because there's only one issue to cover, so less of me to listen to...SCORE!!! But that doesn't mean that the issue, number 98, is to be taken lightly. In fact Kyle Rayner might be up against his greatest foe (which might not be so surprising given his Rogues Gallery to date), an evil Green Lantern Corps! Add to that, he's been flung into the distant future, where all records of him being a Green Lantern are nonexistant. So no legacy, no way to get back to his own time, and an evil bunch of Lanterns led by Tomar Schwarzenegger. Luckily, the Legion of Superheroes is here to help Kyle out. Unluckily, one of the members is a female descendant of Barry Allen who has quite a crush on Kyle. It's a far flung fantasy featuring my favorite...comic book character (I'll never be as good as ol' Stan "The Man"), and to make sure I can tell my Sparks from my Leviathan, I've recruited J. David Weter (host of Dave's Daredevil Podcast and The Starman Observatory) to fill me in on all things Legion. Less frequently, the strip will parody popular culture or indulge in political commentary. There are some recurring types of strip, such as “You Had to Be There” (where the reader is not told what the characters are discussing), “Japanese Calligraphy” (where one of the characters transforms over four panels into a kanji ideograph, usually related to the strip in some way.), “Porn Script Readings” (where Monique and Slick read porn star dialogue in deadpan style, except for once where they used flash cards for a Silent Film reading) and “Ninja Theatre” (where the characters take on the roles of heroes and villains in a martial arts movie). VOTE MAJOR SPOILERS DISCUSSION Sinfest (www.sinfest.net) The subject matter of Sinfest is often human nature, with particular attention paid to sexuality and religion. Though there is little in the way of overarching story or continuity in Sinfest, the central characters do undergo some development.
