De Vlaamse kunstcriticus Ann Demeester was acht jaar lang directeur van het Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. Ze vertrekt om directeur te worden van Kunsthaus Zürich, het grootste kunstmuseum van Zwitserland. In haar tijd bij het Frans Hals Museum voerde Demeester vele veranderingen door. Zo werden kunstwerken niet meer chronologisch bij elkaar in een ruimte geplaatst, maar zocht ze naar andere thematische verbanden. In Nooit Meer Slapen blikt ze terug op haar tijd bij het museum. Wivina Demeester (1943) is een Belgische politica. Ze heeft voor haar partij CD&V verschillende ministerposten bekleed, ondermeer Financiën, Begroting, Welzijn, Gezin en Gezondheidsbeleid. Ze heeft tijdens haar indrukwekkende politieke carrière gewerkt aan de wet op orgaantransplantatie, het rookverbod in openbare gebouwen en de aanstelling van een Vlaamse bouwmeester. Ze kreeg ook een eredoctoraat van de KU Leuven voor haar inzet op het vlak van de ontwikkeling van de bio-ethiek in België. Buiten de politiek heeft Wivina Demeester in Zoersel Monnikenheide opgericht, een dienstencentrum voor mensen met een mentale handicap. Haar zoon Steven is geboren met het syndroom van Down. Ik was bij haar thuis in Zoersel, waar je als je binnenkomt meteen omsingeld bent door boeken. In elke richting waar je kijkt, staat een overvolle boekenkast. Vanop de plaats waar ik zat aan haar bureau tijdens ons gesprek, zag ik er een vijftal. Wivina Demeester stroomt over van enthousiasme over boeken. Ons gesprek gaat over hoe ze soms samen met haar man hetzelfde boek leest, zij op e-reader en hij het fysieke exemplaar. Over wat ze herkende in het boek A Promised Land van Barack Obama. Over dementie, covid en volksgezondheid. Over haar favoriete ministerpost. En helemaal op het einde vertelt ze dat ze nog gebabysit heeft op een monument van de Vlaamse literatuur. Wivina Demeester is ex-minister, ex-staatssecretaris maar nu op haar 77ste nog altijd een bezige bij. Ze zit in de raad van bestuur van heel wat verenigingen en is ook de dame van de 10.000 stappen per dag. Een dame die van aanpakken weet en de minder leuke dingen in het leven weet om te buigen in iets positiefs.

Dit is het tweede gesprek van “Uit het hoofd”, een gesprekkenreeks met experts in een bepaald thema dat ook belangrijk is voor Child-Help vzw. Het tweede gesprek gaat over de politiek van het zorgen. Vandaag is 25 oktober 2020,  de werelddag voor spina bifida en hydrocephalus. Het gesprek vandaag brengt ons eigenlijk naar de oorsprong van de projecten van Child-Help. Wivina Demeester, geboren in Aalst in 1943, is een bijzondere politica voor de CD&V. Tijdens haar lange politieke carrière was ze gemeenteraadslid, parlementslid, zowel federaal en Vlaams, alsook staatssecretaris en minister. De focus van haar bevoegdheden lagen vaak op gezondheidszorg. Als staatssecretaris voor Volksgezondheid en Gehandicaptenbeleid (1985 - 1987) creëerde ze een budgetlijn om Vlaamse expertise in zorg van mensen met een handicap ter beschikking te stellen van het Zuiden. Met dit budget heeft de Vlaamse vereniging voor spina bifida een eerste project in Afrika gerealiseerd wat de voorloper werd van Child-Help. Als moeder van Steven, geboren met het syndroom van Down werd ze een voorvechter voor betere zorg voor personen met een handicap in Vlaanderen. Ze richtte Monnikenheide op, een thuis voor personen met een verstandelijke handicap. Wivina De Meester heeft een bijzondere interesse (en bijdrage) aan architectuur en kunst. Zo installeerde ze de eerste Vlaamse Bouwmeester, Bob van Reeth. Ze wordt ook gezien als de wegbereider voor vrouwen in de politiek zoals Marianne Thyssen en Inge Vervotte. Pierre Mertens (Antwerpen °1953) is beeldend kunstenaar, groepstherapeut en activist voor de rechten van mensen met een handicap. Zijn oudste dochter Liesje, geboren in 1978, had Spina Bifida en Hydrocefalie. Daarom richtte hij de Vlaamse vereniging voor Spina Bifida en Hydrocefalie op, omdat toen, meer dan 40 jaar geleden, zowat alles misliep in de zorg voor zijn kind. Later werd hij voorzitter van de wereldorganisatie van personen met Spina Bifida en Hydrocefalie. Hij richtte later ook Child-Help op, een NGO die zich inzet voor kinderen met een aangeboren handicap in ontwikkelingslanden. Hij schreef ook drie boeken over handicap en maatschappij die in meerdere talen vertaald werden. Lotgenoot als ouders van een kind met een handicap, kunstliefhebber, ontwikkelingssamenwerking, persoonlijk activisme bracht Wivina Demeester in contact met Pierre Mertens. When Penn State club hockey player Voight Demeester was called a gay slur during a game last weekend, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Now Penn State and Penn State Altoona are working together to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again, or that at least it continues to happen less and less. We talk with Demeester, who shares his thoughts on the power of this kind of language in sports.  On a lighter note, a gay couple got engaged in the middle of the Spurs-Bulls game last week. It all took place on the court with the teams assembled and with the help of the Bulls' management. IE Business School and Singapore Management University (SMU) have teamed up to help such professionals in South East Asia and launched a 10-month blended MBA, which combines residential segments in Singapore and Madrid with weekly online classes and forum discussions. Most people (including myself) consider "online MBAs" a way for business schools to scale and make more money. But after speaking to Dr. Gregor Halff, Associate Dean of General Management Programs at SMU, and Dr. Lieven Demeester, IE-SMU MBA Academic Director, I learned that students can expect as much - if not more - time spent with professors than in a traditional face-to-face MBA format. Gregor calls this small-group learning supported by technology; the expected class size is 30 students. Graduates are awarded a joint-degree from IE and SMU and get access to both schools' alumni networks and career services. At 74,900 SGD, the tuition is 20% more than SMU's MBA program, but also 30% less than IE's MBA program. Students take 18 core courses, 3 courses focused on management in Asia, and must complete a real-world 10-month consulting project with teammates.
