“As humans, we are consumers— we can't change that. But we can be aware of how we consume and the impact that our food choices have on the environment, the animals, and people,” -Anaïs Dervaes An urban homestead is a space where people grow their own food and raise animals, as well as produce other goods like soap or candles. It's not only going back to nature but also making sure that we have access to high-quality organic products. It's basically an agricultural collective where everyone contributes something to the community and benefits from it as well! This week, Justine sits with Anaïs Dervaes, the Executive Director of Urban Homestead, a family-owned 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that creates programs to educate the community about protecting the environment and being aligned with nature. Some of their programs include internships, farm-to-table sessions, and food donations. Anaïs runs the organization with her siblings Justin and Jordanne. Urban Homestead was founded by their father and they are determined to continue his legacy. Listen in as Anaïs shares how they turned their home into a homestead in the city, her fun experiences on the farm, how self-sufficiency is achieved through community, what growing with nature means, and how we can make a difference in the food system in our own way. Meet Anaïs: Anaïs Dervaes is an apron-wearing barefootin' dynamo who is passionate about food, wellness, and music. When she's not leading kids through a magical tour of the farm, she enjoys hiking, foraging, practicing her autoharp, and spending time in the kitchen, creating tasty meals from seasonal harvests. She is a hands-on activist for sustainable living, sharing her practical knowledge and teaching people of all ages. Carrying on the family's work and mission, she's co-founder and Executive Director of the Urban Homestead Institute. In 1985 the Dervaes family bought a run-down circa 1917 craftsman-style house in Pasadena, just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. They decided to bring the country homesteading lifestyle to their urban plot. The size of which is only 66' x 132'. Despite its size, the Urban Homestead project is a fully functioning urban farm in every way and it supplies our family with 6,000 pounds of organic produce annually. 90% of their vegetarian diet comes from the garden so they eat on almost $2.00 per day per person. They also power their home with alternative energies and fuel their car with home-brewed bio-diesel. The highly productive Urban Homestead project is now widely considered a successful one-of-a-kind model for sustainable agriculture and eco living in urban areas and has been featured in multiple news medias both nationally and internationally. With a revival of the modern homestead movement, millions worldwide are inspired to take small steps towards a more sustainable life. My conversation with Anais Dervaes was so delightful and I learned I have along way to go in being self-sustaining. That a life providing healthy food to your family and community provides not just satisfaction but true joy and happiness. In this episode the Dervaes family talks about all the latest garden and homestead happenings and their To Do list for 2019 (Sorry for random sound issues - working on improving our system)
Super excited to share this pod with you. The Dervaes family is changing the way we see our grades. They are revolutionizing how we eat and how we look at produce. They have managed to turn a 1/10th acre ordinary home in Pasadena in an urban homestead producing just over 7 tonnes of fresh organic produce annually. Of which they save bucks and a carbon footprint and consume 60% themselves. Listen to this episode about how one man, Jules Dervaes jnr, changed the game and how his three kids, Justin, Anais and Jordanne have kept the flag waving very high.In 1985 the Dervaes bought a run-down circa 1917 craftsman-style house in the metropolis of Pasadena which is just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Downsizing from rural 10 acres to suburban 1/10 acre, they thought they’d have to put aside their “country” lifestyle. But, try as the city life may, it couldn’t take their country ways. Instead, they decided to bring their country homesteading lifestyle to their urban plot.No one thought it was possible. They forged ahead and with no small means of blood, sweat and tears, they worked to transform this ordinary urban plot into an extraordinary example of homesteading in the city. They are now living off the land “directly” — supplying their diet, and “indirectly” — they sell the excess harvest to local establishments and individuals through a customized CSA program via their Front Porch Farmstand.Urban Homestead:WebsitePodcast (Give it a listen!! City folk have been “urban homesteading” since the early 1980s. But then the Dervaes family trademarked the term, and now no one else may play. This leads us to ask…
Download this episode to your MP3 player, throw on your work clothes, grab your spade and head to the garden. Leave the European Bailout and the NYSE glitches behind you and grow something real. Jules returns to the show and this time I (Steve) have moved beyond making lame excuses as to why I don't have time to grow my own tomato's. The questions I have for Jules this time are more directed to the beginner gardener but I have a feeling any green thumb will enjoy this coversation as well. This episode of Two Beers kicks off with a short chat about Jules' appearance on a reality show on the Food Network channel. It's a lively and humorous discussion but I encourage you to follow the links below and watch the show for yourself. Getting a glimpse of the Dervaes' home is a rare treat and can inspire you to build a two-story Cobb oven... just watch the video already. Enjoy the podcast. The Dervaes family runs Path to Freedom, an urban homesteading project, in Pasadena. Since the '80s the family has transformed their city lot into an organic permaculture garden. The yard features more than 350 varieties of plants which are either edible or used for other purposes. The garden supplies the family with their food year round. The family sells some of their greens to local restaurants. Doing this gives them money to purchase solar panels and energy efficient appliances. The solar panels provide their home with power and they use a solar oven to cook food on sunny days. (Note: news segment mistakenly mentions the goats were producing milk. They ARE dairy goats and can produce milk, but like all mammals, they only lactate when pregnant or nursing babies. We haven't bred our two goats yet. ) www.pathtofreedom.com Watch YouTube News Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekVAmWxbnqE Each week Martin Pytela and Scott Paton discuss Holistic principles for healthy living.
