Our gardens are doing great! So far. If you don't count the heat, the Japanese beetles… and the murders! Life is growing fast and furious in our gardens and we are applying water like we are applying for a job. Edith loves her loveage. Christy is at peace with her peace rose. Edith is plum crazy about her plum tree. Christy is thinks Edith's peach tree harvest is going to be… peachy keen. :) Our summer gardens are a potpourri of marvels, questions and fun tips. To shell or not to shell peas? Is it possible for gardeners to be psychopaths? When should you trim back your tomatoes? Where does the term potpourri come from? How can Windex be a tool in your garden? How to get the most blooms from your geraniums? Why is July 27 an important gardening date? Which mite might help you control bindweed? Why you shouldn't name plants after people you know. If you want some fun Brand New pod plays, we got ‘em. If you want some inspiration, we got it. If you want some moist soil – it's there. We sure had fun recording this episode – and hope you can join in the laughter, while learning a thing or two. So put on your headphones, head out into your garden and enjoy!

Back in November I talked to you about doing a soil test, using slow-release amendments in the garden to do their work gradually over the winter, and then doing another soil test in the spring to see how well it worked. Now's the time in most areas to be doing that spring soil test before you start planting your spring or summer gardens. But, what do you do if that spring test shows the amendments you added in the fall just weren't enough to fix the problem? This time around you'll need something that works into the soil a little more quickly if you want the garden ready in time to grow a lush crop for spring and summer. And even then you may find the need to add some supplemental plant food to directly feed the plants instead of the soil to be sure you get a good harvest. So, today on Just Grow Something we'll go over the organic amendments you can be adding to the garden now that will give the soil a quick boost and the possible ways to feed the plants directly while waiting for the soil to improve. LONG PAUSE And breathe in deeply again, letting the cool, comfort of your bed relax you as you sink deeper into it. LONG PAUSE And as you breathe, let your breath form a rhythm, gently moving in and out and lulling you into a deep, restful calm. LONG PAUSE Now, imagine the breath lightening your body, so that it feels more open, almost weightless. PAUSE And with this beautiful, relaxed feeling, notice the sheets of your bed transforming into fluffy clouds beneath your body. PAUSE After a moment, the clouds lift you up out of room and above the house, sailing slowly and gently through the air. PAUSE The air is like satin around you, giving you a wonderful level of comfort as you float along. PAUSE Now, imagine the cloud taking you to a wooden door with a arched frame and iron spikes all around like a gate… a door that leads to a garden. PAUSE The door creaks open and the cloud lets you down, and you are amazed at the lushness of the summer garden before you. PAUSE There are white and yellow daisies, purple geraniums, pink peonies and brilliant magenta hibiscus blooming everywhere. PAUSE You breathe in and catch the scent of lilac blossoming in a corner, Its beautiful purple stocks bending in the breeze. PAUSE As you stroll through the rows of rainbow colored flowers, one of the hibiscus flowers catches your attention: A tiny pink and green hummingbird is sipping its nectar. PAUSE You draw closer to the flower, and the bird doesn't seem to mind, as you watch its tiny wings beat so fast you can barely see them there. PAUSE After a satisfying drink, the little hummingbird lifts in the air and leaves the garden. PAUSE Moments later a honeybee lands on a daisy, buzzing like a violin. PAUSE Safely, you watch the bee as it goes right to work gathering its food and then flitting to another flower, pollinating it and giving the garden continued life. PAUSE Moments later, a dragonfly flutters by, pausing briefly in the air and then on the ground, its stain-glass wings shimmering in the sunlight. PAUSE A tiny black and gold chipmunk pokes it head out from behind a shrub, and a bushy-tailed squirrel shakes a pine tree bouncing from limb to limb. PAUSE In the center of the garden, you notice a fountain carved from stone with two cherubs dancing on top. PAUSE Water tunnels out from the heart of one of the cherubs, splashing gently into the water below. As you draw near, you notice two large koi fish swimming in the fountain, Their golden scales slimmering in the water. PAUSE You pause, and sit on a stone bench near the fountain, so you can take in all the beauty of the garden. PAUSE After a while, you notice the sun slowly fading, and the azure blue sky turing to midnight blue. PAUSE A few fireflies light up the garden, and you watch their hypnotic lights before noticing the fluffy cloud has returned. PAUSE It's time to leave the summer garden but you now carry its beauty with you, day and night. Every day. NAMASTE, BEAUTIFUL
Ad Astra Travelers! Welcome back to Tales of Teyvat, a Genshin lore podcast. Last week, we walked through the Caribert quest line and decided to get Kaeya a paternity test. Unfortunately, the results came back inconclusive... This week, we jump into the delusion as we discuss Fischl von Luftschloss Narfidort. Novelist Jane Delury describes herself as a fledgling (maybe seedling?) gardener after 8 years into gardening being part of her everyday life and loves. This labor and love in life coincide with themes of landscapes, gardens, and gardeners becoming fully-embodied motifs and characters in her fiction writing. They show up in her first novel-in-stories, The Balcony, and in her newly released novel Hedge, gardens, gardeners, and gardening past and present from all kinds of perspectives take center stage. Deep into the heat of the season now, it's always gratifying to lean into the pleasures of a good summer book. In our case, a good garden-based summer book. Hedge is steamy, dreamy, and through the setting of gardens and garden history, the story plumbs the depths of human longing, loss, and ultimately the long view. Jane joins Cultivating Place this first week of July to share more about her new and richly gardened novel, the research that went into it, and the garden passion and history that enlivens it. Listen in! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations.
