Today's show is all about getting clear on what makes a homestead sovereign vs. a modern homestead vs. just a homestead. SPOILER ALERT: It's all about CHOICE. A well-designed homestead gives you more choice - more freedom to say NO to those things that are not in alignment with your highest quality of life, so that you can say yes to the things that are. We then go into the SAPA Framework for conducting your own sovereignty self-assessment for your life and landscape, applying it to all the basic survival needs: Water, Nutrition & Calories, Shelter, Physical Security, Hygiene & Sanitation, Health & Medical Care, Energy, Finances. Survey - What your needs for BLANK? Where does your BLANK come from? Assess Who controls the source? Rank yourself in terms of Self-Reliance (time) vs. Self-Sufficiency (%) differences between the two Which are you trying to increase for each category? How well are they being met? Are these needs better met by moving the locus of production closer to you or further away? Prioritize Where would you feel the pinch first? Two ways to gauge this… If you had to stay home for 30 days, can't leave - what is the first thing that would run-out or malfunction? That source is gone - how long until you feel it? Does it threaten life or property? YES: This is a high priority. If so, how long until you would be forced to do something ill-advised under the circumstances to meet this need? NO: this is a facet of your current lifestyle that isn't essential to your survival, but its absence makes you less comfortable Act FOCUSING QUESTION: What's the one thing I can do, such that by doing it, will make everything else easier or unnecessary? Tailored: What's the one thing I can do for my [BASIC NEED] sovereignty, such that by doing it, will make further steps towards self-reliance or self-sufficiency for [BASIC NEED] easier or unnecessary? In short, applying the SAPA framework to all of your basic survival needs areas will help you identify the action steps with the greatest ROI that you can take today to move you and your family in the direction of resilience and greater time freedom. When you think of homesteading, what comes to mind? Ma and Pa Ingles out on the prairie trying to build a home and raise a family with their own resources on a large plot of dusty land? Maybe you think of the early pictures of covered wagons crossing dangerous territories on their way to stake a claim out west. Yeah, me too! But, in reality, modern homesteading is nothing like that. Today, homesteading can happen just about anywhere. Because modern homesteading isn't about relying only on yourself. It's also about having a community and relying on resources close to home for the things you can't produce yourself. And that home can be anywhere – in the city or in the country. It's just a matter of taking the steps to figure out what you can reasonably provide for yourself and what you can glean locally to make yourself a bit more self-sufficient. Just because you live in a suburban neighborhood doesn't mean you can't hone many homesteading skills and become a homesteader. Homesteading in our modern, globally connected world doesn't mean all or nothing. Is that actually dust and cobwebs on my microphone? I can't believe it has been well over a year since the last episode. Why Did The Modern Homesteading Podcast Stop? Covid I was still doing the podcast a few months into all the changes covid was bringing to the world in 2020 but as time went on it started to have a huge impact on my life as well. Work My job went into a shut down for several weeks but this wasn't the thing that had the biggest impact on the podcast. When I got back to work, however, things got a little crazy as we scrambled to make up for lost time. I started working very long days and extra days a week for months which left very little time for anything else. Wedding On top of the heavy work schedule we also found ourselves planning for my youngest daughters wedding in 2020. If anyone has ever married off a daughter you know the stress and preparation that can go into that. Ever see the movie "Father of the Bride" with Steve Martin? I can relate to it. Grandkids We found ourselves spending a lot of time with the grandkids as any grandparents would want to. Camping We bought a used camper parked in a seasonal lot in a nice local campground to have a little get away on a few weekends a year. It's a place where we can take the grandkids fishing and just sit around a campfire with friends to relax from time to time. Funeral In the last year I have lost my brother and my grandmother. Losing my brother was tough for a couple months and I was in charge of handling his memorial service. The hardest message I ever had to deliver. The Busyness of Life! All in All it was just a busy few months and it pulled me away from the podcast and even my homesteading pursuits for a while. The Homestead Continues To Slowly Transform The Food Forest I continued to very slowly work on the food forest I started the year before but didn't make a ton of progress. Started to build a few guilds around some of the trees planted there. Winter Aquaponics and Microgreens I did grow an abundance of food in my kitchen and office through the 2020/2021 winter by growing several trays of microgreens a week and even setting up an indoor aquaponics system which produced very well. A Long Road Ahead But It Will Be Worth It No doubt there were a few setbacks on my homesteading journey last year but we are pressing forward and made a few changes that are setting us in a direction we want to go. A New Website, a New Podcast and a Slightly New Direction Introducing Redemption Permaculture and the Redemption Permaculture Podcast Many of you may have noticed I made a change in websites. I shut down SmallTownHomestead.com and built a brand new website, RedemptionPermaculture.com This signifies the direction I'm taking my homestead and the focus of my journey. Permaculture has made the biggest impact in the way I homestead and I want that to be reflected in the branding of the website. But wait there's more! I Started the new website at the beginning of 2021 and have been busy writing over 100 information packed articles but a couple months ago I launched a brand new podcast that I haven't talked much about until now because I wanted to get a few episodes uploaded first. Homesteading. It’s a term that’s associated with the expansion of the United States in the 1800’s but a new generation of self-reliant entrepreneurs has adopted the term and lifestyle and turned it into an attractive option for a broad number of people who are willing to work hard towards providing for themselves and their families. With the current pandemic, it’s become increasingly apparent how reliant our society has become on outside food, resources, and essential items that we need and want everyday. It’s exposed weaknesses in our food and other supply chains that are ultimately felt on an individual level. Today’s instructor, Anne Briggs of Anne of All Trades, has been working for years towards building a lifestyle of self-sufficiency and has a big head start on the rest of us. She started her own homestead in Seattle years ago and has recently moved to the Nashville area where she’s starting from scratch with a new homesteading project. From gardening to raising livestock, woodworking to blacksmithing, Anne has learned on the fly with a fearless do-it-yourself attitude that has made her not only a successful homesteader, but also a social media sensation who shares her can-do attitude with her large following. By the end of this class you’ll have an idea of what it takes to create your own homestead, how you can identify things around your yard that you could add to your diet, and how you can start with some small changes to create a more self-sufficient lifestyle. The goal for many women, especially homesteading women, is to become a full-time homesteading housewife, or homesteading homemaker. However, in this day and age many homesteading women do not have this opportunity. Instead you will find many of us balancing home, children, and property responsibilities with a full-time job. The dream to solely manage the property, family, and home is within reach. We as modern homesteading homemakers need to learn how to achieve this goal. How is it possible for us to do it all? Even I maintain a full time job while running the homestead. When my husband and I got married, I was working 40 hours a week and we started our family and I was trying to balance family, and growing our food and all of that, and it has been a 20 year journey to get here. I feel like my husband grew up in a similar situation on a cattle ranch, growing a lot of their own food, baking their own breads and cookies. I feel blessed now to have all that insight as an adult it has served me well, but as a teenager I didn’t really appreciate it. For us to have tv where we lived you had to go out in the snow and turn the antenna. So I read a lot. I wanted to write books, my lifelong dream was to write historical fiction. I was always writing about dutch oven cooking and barrel riding and all these things. I was at a writer’s conference and they said you had to have a platform with a blog etc. I was like what’s a blog? But I learned, we had dial-up internet. And I wrote this blog about things my heroine did that I was also doing. I thought well I cook in a dutch oven so I’ll share my favorite recipes and hopefully people who wanted to read that would read my books and I eventually got a literary agent, and wrote lots of manuscripts but none got accepted. But then the last publishing house said how would you like to write non-fiction, your blog is amazing. And I said YES! Yes, I will! We raise all of our own beef pork increasing a garden Both of my first books I was doing all of this. It’s tough when you’re on the road. It lets you listen to a lot of podcasts but it definitely makes being healthy a challenge. Tell me about your first gardening experience? Kind of I grew up on a homestead really, we didn’t call it that but we had animals large garden more property did all those things always grew up working in the garden in garden never thought about it being my garden first time it was about 3rd or 4th grade Really got the bug for growing something on your own! in school believe it or not bean plants styrofoam cup gardens at home I remember that vividly, growing that bean cup grow and replanted it in the yard! gave me a bug Like I said, we worked in the garden all the time always loved That Green Freak in school! loved growing stuff gardening animals teenage years got more into cars and girls stayed away from it in my mind always assume I’d be living that lifestyle I always wanted to be Caroline Ingalls in the mountains, I knew the minute I walked into Mike’s house this is what I have been dreaming about all my life, it’s a little bit bigger. How did you learn how to garden organically? it never seemed important to me then in my ind I thought I guess I thought about sustainable practices But my dad he would dump any chemical fertilizers on the lawns dealing with the animals we would pump em full of antibiotics whatever would keep them alive so we could survive. wanted the most productive garden what we thought would be our best garden doesn’t seem right old ways people have always done it that always worked time period in the late 70s and 80s Everyone was doing it! It’s what people did to have a great garden! miracle grow then dump all kinds of liquid fertilizers pesticides When I got cancer didn’t because of all my bad decisions eating out 2-3 times a day every day for years I did that stage 3 colon cancer at 39 years old At my 40th birthday I was doing a chemo treatment back in 2012 things are really good now opened up my eyes Even the doctors said You can’t eat like that! that stuff is horrible highly processed preservatives handle quite a bit but it was just too much! opened my eyes to important of eating healthy nutritious organic grown food THAT stuff is expensive! I was off of work for a couple of months chemo and surgery ate up our savings organic food we can’t afford that What are you supposed to do, is grow your own? for a lot of people that wouldn’t be a big deal live in town on a 10th of an acre I was discouraged run across a video not doing a lot Homegrown Revolution (http://urbanhomestead.org/homegrown-revolution/) Dervaes family they were on a 10th of an acre and they were growing 6-7000 pounds in their backyard It’s so inspiring!
